AS A DESIGNER, I WORKED ON SEVERAL PROJECTS, INCLUDING TROUBLESHOOTING SEVERAL PROJECTS AND RESOLVING ISSUES THAT KEPT THOSE PROJECTS FROM MOVING FORWARD. THESE PROJECTS INCLUDE THE PRIVATE RESIDENCE OF LEE BASS, RESIDENTIAL CONDOMINUM BLOCK, A 4,000 SQ FT HOME, A FOOD TRUCK PARK, AND HOTEL ROOM UPDATES. IN ADDITION TO MY DESIGN WORK, I SPENT HALF OF MY TIME WORKING ON BETTERING THE COMPANY FROM A BUSINESS STANDPOINT. THE GREEN LOOP OKLAHOMA CITY, OK

AS PART OF A GRADUATE THESIS ON URBAN PLANNING, THE GREEN LOOP IS A PROPOSAL FOR A BELTWAY AROUND MAJOR COMPONENTS OF OKLAHOMA CITY. PRESENTATION OF THE PROJECT WAS IN FRONT OF OKLAHOMA CITY PLANNERS, DEVELOPERS, AND RYAN GRAVEL, THE CREATOR OF THE HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL BELTWAY AROUND ATLANTA, GEORGIA, WHICH HAS CREATED SEVERAL BILLION DOLLARS OF BENEFITS AND IS AN ON-GOING DEVELOPMENT. AS PART OF THE PRESENTATION, TWO RE-DESIGNED BUSY INTERSECTIONS WERE SHOWN THAT INCORPORATE PROTECTED BIKE TRAVEL WHILE NOT SLOWING DOWN TRAFFIC OR ADDING COSTLY AND TIME-CONSUMING WIDENING.

Stage 1 consists of the superstructure and foundation alone. While the greater intention is for some to be filled with permanent facilities, some can be left as is to fill the needs of a covered multi-use facility.

IN THE SUMMER OF 2015, A GROUP OF GRADUATE STUDENTS WENT TO ZAMBIA, AFRICA TO WORK ON A REAL-WORLD PROJECT OF DESIGNING A PRIMARY SCHOOL FOR FAMILY LEGACY INTERNATIONAL. THE COMPREHENSIVE, AWARD-WINNING, SIGNS WERE GIVEN IN THE FALL OF

60-PAGE REPORT OF RECOMMENDATIONS AND DE2015, AND THE SCHOOL WAS COMPLETED IN 2016.

FOLLOWING THE SUCCESS OF THE 2015 ZAMBIA TRIP, FAMILY LEGACY INTERNATIONAL ASKED US TO RETURN TO PROVIDE THE SAME SERVICES, THIS TIME FOCUSING ON A 10-ACRE SITE AND A SECONDARY SCHOOL. THEN, A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY TRIP WENT TO WORK WITH TIME MAGAZINE’S 100 MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE, SISTER ROSEMARY NYIRUMBE. WHO WORKS WITH WOMEN AFFECTED BY THE REIGN OF JOSEPH KONY AND THE LORD’S RESISTANCE ARMY. SOME OF THE METHODOLOGIES USED DURING THIS PROCESS INCLUDE:

Stage 2 includes the temporary modular units set in place. The superstructure, shielding the modular units, allows for the quick insertion and transfer of the units. This stage also includes the addition of a supported shelf to hold the 2nd floor.

Stage 3 illustrates the transition of removing the modular units when time/budget allows for walls to be erected to create a permanent building. With the building taking shape incrementally, oversight of the construction can be monitored. Modular units can be stored offsite for reuse later or moved to the next site where Stage 1 has been completed.

Stage 3 is the completed planned build-out of the structure. Having removed the modular units, permanent durable rooms are constructed. The supporting shelf is now the permanent 2nd floor.

1. Gravity will help feed the collection of rainwater tanks.

2. Multiple small rainwater storage tanks lessen the dependency on a few, large tanks. If one spoils, the impact is lessened and rainwater can still be collected. 3. Gravity will help flush the toilets/feed the sinks, eliminating the need for a pump A valve can be used for external access and non-potable use. 4. The height prevents people from tampering with or playing on them, which can cause accidental damage. 5. The areas where large tanks would go, are now cleared and can be reclaimed for pathways or courtyards. 6. No pump means a simple manual valve can be implemented in order to switch over to the traditional water supply system, as needed.

INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMS ARE ADDRESSED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF MIXED-USED FACILITIES THAT ENCAPSULATE THE CULMINATION OF THE MASTERS PROGRAM. FOOD IN ALL OF ITS ROLES ARE REPRESENTED--SUSTAINABILITY, LOCALITY, ENTERTAINMENT, INNOVATION. BRINGING LOWER INCOME TO THE CENTER OF ENTERTAINMENT EQUALIZES THE MASSES, CONNECTS LOCALS TO OKLAHOMA FARMERS YEAR-ROUND, AND PROVIDES A HUB OF ENTERTAINMENT FOR BOTH ESTABLISHED BUSINESSES AND EMERGING IDEAS.

The pedestrian paths around the Collaborat have been widened while maintaining their curves and irregular forms. The duality is yet another example of the interplay between the two concepts.

The building is a physical representation of the collaboration between the two departments expressed through materiality and shapes, while embracing and inviting the public to engage and experience the space

The building is a catalyst of the collaboration between the architecture and microbiology departments at the University of Oklahoma. Each department brings their own expertise and will consipre on projects that are mutually beneficial. Highlighting the research and taking pride in the work that is developed within these walls has become a priority as well. To create this partnership, the idea of duality is explored. The built form sits upon the lanscape bridged by the Van Vleet landscape path. Two major shapes are shown interacting with each other. Within this space the user experiences different moments as the forms interact, intersect, and merge. From the outside in, through the spaces, and out again, the interrelationship between the two continues to be expressed. Further enhancing these experiences, the materiality is explored between two main materials--glass and brick. Different combinations of materials and shapes create unique programming spaces allowing for awareness of interaction, which encourage the possibilities of new relationships to be developed. Bringing the amazing work that occurs at the university into public view and from behind closed doors, the Van Vleet path draws the greater public in and invites them to use the space and to see the research and work that is being conducted. The path invites students to relax at a crossroads in the middle of the campus, and further up into the space. At the top of the path, students are invited to use the sceond great reading room--a modern homage to on the great landmarks on the Norman campus. An open 3-story glassed in room provides a quiet area for students to further their studies while enjoying a beautiful view of the South Oval and the Norman campus. The unique setting that is higher education, the space will serve as a beacon to draw potential professors and researchers, prospective students, and prideful alumni to experience the interplay between these departments. Plinky Fisk III taught at OU and is co-founder and co-drector of the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems (CMPBS), a sustainable design and planning non-profit. Fisk’s special contributionsin the research field have been principally in materials and methods. He has also developed an alternative land planning and design methodology referreed to as Eco-Balance Design and Planning. Pliny Fisk perfectly embodies the interplay between the two disciplines as expressed through materiality and landscaping.

Movement up the Van Vleet ramp will take you into the Reading Room on the second floor, paying homage to one of the great features of the Norman Campus. Once inside, students are able to interact with the first level floor, as those students enter from the East on the ground level. The interaction encourges students to use the building, while the Reading Room acts as a drawing force or incentive into the building, taking advantege of the pre-exisitng Views and Access to the site from the West.
