‘Garcia y Garcia’ is a vertiginous mix-up comedy that gathers for the first time two of the biggest Spanish comedians in the Silver Screen: José Mota and Pepe Viyuela. It is my most ambitious feature film. It was shot in multiple locations of the Spanish geography, that includes airports, more than 60 airplanes and extensive cast formed by some of the most relevant comedians of Spain. With 'García and García' I had the opportunity to deploy all my sense of humor.
‘Garcia y García’ es una comedia de equívocos de ritmo vertiginoso en la que he unido por primera vez en la gran pantalla a dos grandes cómicos: José Mota y Pepe Viyuela. Es mi película más ambiciosa. Rodada en 5 aeropuertos, entre más de 60 aviones y con un elenco donde cuento con gran parte de los mejores cómicos del país, con ‘García y García’ he tenido la oportunidad de desplegar todo mi sentido del humor.

SYNOPSIS SINOPSIS In the year 2000, Maixabel Lasa’s husband, Juan María Jaúregui, was killed by ETA. Eleven years later, she receives an incredible request: one of the men who killed Juan wants to meet with her after breaking ties with the terrorist group. Despite her immense pain, Maixabel Lasa agrees to meet face to face with those who ended the life of her husband. ‘Everyone deserves a second chance’, she said. Maixabel Lasa pierde en el año 2000 a su marido, Juan María Jaúregui, asesinado por ETA. Once años más tarde, recibe una petición insólita: uno de los hombres que lo mataron ha pedido entrevistarse con ella tras haber roto sus lazos con la banda terrorista. A pesar del inmenso dolor, Maixabel Lasa accede a encontrarse cara a cara con las personas que acabaron con la vida de su marido. “Todo el mundo merece una segunda oportunidad”, dice ella.

Maixabel Lasa has become a leading figure on the journey that the Basque Country is currently making towards social harmony. Her work in the Basque Government’s Office for the Victims of Terrorism is well known, but not so her personal involvement in the Restorative Meetings of 2011.
"Maixabel Lasa se ha convertido en un referente en el camino que hoy transita el País Vasco hacia la convivencia. Su trabajo como directora de la Oficina para las Víctimas del Terrorismo del Gobierno Vasco es muy conocido, pero su implicación personal en los Encuentros Restaurativos de 2011 no tanto.
There is something profoundly human in Maixabel actions – coming face to face with the men who killed her husband, to make them understand the pain she suffered, to ask questions that only they can answer, to hear them express their deep sorrow at the pain they caused, and to decide whether their words are sincere.
Hay algo profundamente humano en lo que hace Maixabel: encararse con los hombres que mataron a su marido para hacerles saber el dolor sufrido, para pedir respuestas a las preguntas que solo ellos pueden contestar, para escucharles decir que lamentan profundamente el dolor causado y valorar si hay sinceridad en esas palabras.
For their part, these two men have undertaken a long and difficult journey, leaving behind the justifications that once caused them to take up arms, now sitting alone, face to face, with what they have done. Three lives brought together one day by terror; three paths that cross. Each individual takes a different journey towards the same destination: hope and reparation. Once face to face, they experience anger, distress, shame, fear, but also gratitude and the hope of being able to create something even the slightest bit good amid so much horror.
Por el otro lado, estos dos hombres han hecho un largo y difícil viaje: han dejado atrás las justificaciones que un día les empujaron a empuñar una pistola para quedarse a solas, cara a cara, con lo que han hecho. Through these people, the film explores the consequences and the human cost of violence, particularly for those who suffer it but also for those who exercise it, and for the society that harbours it. In Maixabel, we wanted to tell the story of our recent past with feeling, sincerity, and the utmost respect for the people at its heart.
La película aborda a través de estos personajes las consecuencias y el coste humano que tiene la violencia, sobre todo para quien la sufre, pero también para quien la ejerce y para toda la sociedad que la alberga. SYNOPSIS SINOPSIS On October 4th, 2007 Arantza, the director of the film, was detained and taken to prison. She remembers a few things about those days: endlessly walking around the prison exercise yard, swimming competitions, Rasha’s prison journey… After 918 nights locked up, Arantza is set free. From then onwards, she recorded her memories and doubts, which are heard throughout the documentary as a kind of fragmented memoir. El 4 de octubre de 2007, Arantza, directora de la película, es detenida y llevada a prisión. De aquellos días conserva algunos recuerdos: las interminables vueltas por el patio, los campeonatos de natación, el periplo carcelario de Rasha… Tras pasar 918 noches encerrada, Arantza queda en libertad. A partir de ese momento, registra en una grabadora sus recuerdos y sus dudas, que se van desplegando a lo largo de la película a modo de una memoria fragmentada.

There are two issues that were a great challenge for me when it came to taking on this film:

One the one hand, talking about my experience in prison using a limited archive of photographs and letters.
Por un lado, contar mi vivencia en la cárcel a partir de un limitado archivo de fotografías y cartas.
As a filmmaker, I am obsessed about the scarcity of resources to describe a world as invisible as prison is. Which is why I used the photographs that my relatives sent from the outside, contrasting them with the few pictures that I was able to get from the inside. These photographs show the tense relationship between the world outside and the world inside.
Como cineasta, me obsesiona la escasez de recursos para contar un mundo tan invisible como es la cárcel. Para ello, he utilizado las fotografías que mis allegados/as enviaban desde el exterior, contrastando con unas pocas imágenes que yo pude obtener en el interior. Estas fotografías muestran la relación de tensión entre el mundo de fuera y el de dentro.
Another big challenge in this film was merging two tempos. The past, linked to the prison experience, and the present, the period after prison. To do this, I used two types of images: those of the past, photographs and some filmed letters, which were revealing in terms of the development of my experience.
Otro gran reto en esta película ha sido la fusión de dos tiempos. El pasado, vinculado a la vivencia en prisión, y el presente, que hace referencia al periodo de después de la prisión. Para ello, he utilizado dos tipos de imágenes; las del pasado, fotografías y algunas cartas filmadas, que han sido reveladoras en el devenir de mi experiencia.
I also used images filmed in the present. The dissociation between archive and current images was a way of weaving together memories of the past with reflections on the present, giving rise to a film in which thos two times come together.
Por otro lado, he utilizado imágenes filmadas en la actualidad. Esta disociación entre el archivo y las imágenes actuales, ha sido una forma de hilar los recuerdos del pasado con las reflexiones del presente dando lugar a una película donde ambos tiempos aparecen fusionados.
Chris Marker used to say that, contrary to what many people may think, using the first person in a film can be a sign of humanity: all you can offer is yourself. That’s what I’ve tried to do in this film.
Chris Marker decía, que al contrario de lo que la gente piensa, usar la primera persona en un film puede ser un signo de humanidad: todo lo que se tiene es ofrecerse a una misma. Es lo que he intentado en esta película.

The house of snails is a journey into an unknown universe, an inner discovery, a love story, a story of mystery, uncertainty, bewilderment, perhaps a legend full of dreams and nightmares.
La casa del caracol es un viaje hacia un universo desconocido, un descubrimiento interior, una historia de amor, un cuento de misterio, incertidumbre, desconcierto, quizá una leyenda llena de sueños y pesadillas.
My journey to the other side of the camera has paralleled that of the film's protagonist, Antonio Prieto. Directing a movie like The house of snails has been the most important experience I have had in my entire life. It has not been a bed of roses, but I would go through it again and again because I have been so protected and so well accompanied that I have felt strong and safe to face this challenge.
Mi viaje al otro lado de la cámara ha ido en paralelo al que vive el protagonista de la película, Antonio Prieto. Dirigir una película como la casa del caracol ha sido la experiencia más importante que he vivido en toda mi vida. No ha sido un camino de rosas, pero volvería a pasar por él una y otra vez porque he estado tan arropada y tan bien acompañada que me he sentido fuerte y segura para afrontar este reto.
The story of The house of snails takes us to meet Antonio Prieto, a writer who lives a personal and professional crisis and who decides to escape to an isolated town to find the peace he needs to return to being the famous writer he once was. Here begins Antonio's journey, in which he will meet a strange, dark and hostile world, with characters that feed on myths and superstitions and that will serve as inspiration for his novel. He will also meet Berta, the light that illuminates the black shadow that looms over Quintanar.
La historia de la casa del caracol nos lleva a conocer a Antonio Prieto, un escritor que vive una crisis personal y profesional y que decide escaparse a un pueblo aislado para encontrar la paz que necesita para volver a ser el escritor famoso que un día fue. Aquí comienza el viaje de Antonio, en el que conocerá un mundo extraño, oscuro y hostil, con personajes que se alimentan de mitos y supersticiones y que le servirán como inspiración para su novela. También se encontrará con Berta, la luz que ilumina la sombra negra que se cierne sobre Quintanar.
Being able to work with a cast like the one that The house os snails has has really been a gift of life, one of the most intense and enriching experiences of the entire directing process of the film. Shooting in my Malaga, together with many colleagues who were with me in my first short films, has been another gift that life has given me.
Poder trabajar con un elenco como el que tiene la casa del caracol ha sido realmente un regalo de la vida, una de las experiencias más intensas y enriquecedoras de todo el proceso de dirección de la película. Rodar en mi Málaga, junto a muchos compañeros y compañeras que estuvieron conmigo en mis primeros cortometrajes, ha sido otro regalo que me ha dado la vida.

SYNOPSIS SINOPSIS We walk with the singer Anne Etchegoyen the path undertaken each winter, between 1870 and 1940, by hundreds of Navarrese and Aragonese women - known as the "swallows" because of their migratory resemblance to birds. A trek through the Pyrenees to the French Basque Country, with the aim of working in the espadrille industry for a season. With the arrival of spring, They began their return home to help the local economy, raise their own families and start a new life. A journey through time, geography and historical and personal circumstances, through files, documents, photographs and interviews. Recorremos con la cantante Anne Etchegoyen el camino emprendido cada invierno, entre 1870 y 1940, por cientos de mujeres navarras y aragonesas –conocidas como las “golondrinas” por su parecido migratorio con las aves–, a través de los Pirineos hasta el País Vasco francés para trabajar en la industria de la alpargata y emprender en primavera el regreso al hogar para ayudar a la economía local, formar su propia familia y empezar una nueva vida. Un viaje a través del tiempo, de la geografía y de las circunstancias históricas y personales, por medio de archivos, documentos, fotografías y entrevistas.

We will tell the story through the eyes of Anne Etchegoyen, a Basque singer from Saint Palais. Anne is faced with a bare landscape, devoid of its protagonists. A place of outstanding natural beauty, in an era of which we have no film archives. Not being able to see our protagonists on their journey to Mauléon represents a challenge. We bring our protagonists to life through work in post-production and animation of photographic material and creating an acoustic environment through the recovery and reinterpretation of traditional songs. Songs that were sung by the espadrille makers in their villages of origin, during their journey and also in Mauléon as they worked in the factory. We plan to work on the image quality, as the landscape of the villages of origin, the Pyrenees and Mauléon comprise spectacular natural backdrops for telling the story. Furthermore, we will use original photographs and documents as well as an elegant, varied and contextualised post-production. But Ainarak is not an archive documentary. While all the previous documentation work is important, so is the classification and selection of the final material. The same applies to interviews, accompanying comments, etc. which help to tell the story. The sound track becomes a voice that whispers to Anne in different languages along her journey.It is the voice of the swallows, which also reaches the ears of the viewer.
Contaremos la historia a través de la mirada de Anne Etchegoyen, cantante vasca con origen en Saint-Palais. Anne se enfrenta a un paisaje desnudo, vacío de sus protagonistas. Un territorio de una gran belleza paisajística, en una época de la que no tenemos archivo cinematográfico. El hecho de no poder ver a nuestras protagonistas en su camino hacia Maule se ha convertido en un reto. Damos vida a nuestras protagonistas a través del trabajo en postproducción y animación de material fotográfico y creando un ambiente sonoro a través de la recuperación y reinterpretación de canciones tradicionales. Canciones que cantaban las alpargateras en sus pueblos de origen, en el camino, pero también en su destino, trabajando en la fábrica. Hemos planteado un tratamiento de calidad de la imagen, pues el paisaje de los pueblos de origen, los Pirineos y Mauléon son un decorado natural espectacular para contar la historia. Además, contaremos con recursos de fotos y documentos, y una postproducción elegante, variada y contextualizada. Pero Ainarak no es un documental de archivo. Por eso es importante todo el trabajo previo de documentación, pero también de clasificación y selección del material definitivo. Además, entrevistas, acompañamientos, etc., que ayudan a narrar la historia. La banda sonora se convierte en una voz que susurra a Anne en diferentes lenguas a lo largo del camino. Es la voz de las golondrinas, que también llega a nosotros.

When I got pregnant I felt that many things did not fit me around. I had always been afraid of childbirth and I thought that the the best would be to anesthetize myself and take the child out like that, painlessly, in the most "Easly" way. However when I got pregnant this changed. I started to feel and ask myself that if my body was capable of gestating a human being for 9 months, how could he not be able to bring it into the world? I went to a childbirth preparation group where they talked about respectful childbirth with the woman and the baby. Later I realized that the delivery was not so important; but what happens later? Was I ready to connect with my baby? But then I started to be aware of my own shortcomings in trying to carry out, insofar as I was possible, a more conscientious and respectful parenting with my daughter. Inevitably, I had to face what was my childhood. And I was fascinated by secrets that this stage of life hides that we do not remember, from intrauterine life up to approximately 3 years. But are the traces of childhood forever? Do they transform over time? And if so, What? What can we do? How can we work with them? Also, was it really so terrible our childhood? Have we all suffered so much? Many say yes, although We barely remember it, because it is in our subconscious. Is the root of many problems of our society such as violence, or lack of solidarity, in our childhoods?
Cuando me quedé embarazada de mi hija, sentí que muchas cosas no cuadraban a mi alrededor. Siempre había tenido miedo al parto y pensaba que lo mejor sería que la anestesiaran a una en ese momento y le sacaran al niño así, sin dolor, de la manera más “fácil” posible. Sin embargo al quedarme embarazada esto cambió. Empecé a sentir y a plantearme que si mi cuerpo era capaz de gestar a un ser humano durante 9 meses, ¿cómo no iba a ser capaz de traerlo al mundo? Acudí a un grupo de preparación al parto donde se hablaba del parto respetuoso con la mujer y el bebé. Más tarde comprendí que el parto no era tan importante; pero ¿qué ocurre después? ¿Estaba yo preparada para conectarme con mi bebé? Pero entonces empecé a ser consciente de mis propias carencias al tratar de llevar a cabo, en la medida que me era posible, una crianza más consciente y respetuosa con mi hija. Inevitablemente, tuve que enfrentarme con la que fue mi infancia. Y quedé fascinada por los secretos que esconde esa etapa de la vida que no recordamos, desde la vida intrauterina hasta los 3 años aproximadamente. Pero, ¿Las huellas de la infancia son para siempre? ¿Se transforman con el tiempo? ¿Y si es así, cómo? ¿Qué podemos hacer? Además, ¿realmente fue tan terrible nuestra infancia? Muchos aseguran que sí, porque está en nuestro subconsciente. ¿Está la raíz de muchos problemas de nuestra sociedad como la violencia, o la falta de solidaridad, en nuestras infancias?

Thirty years later, he has not yet managed to leave the shadow of the band which, to the amazement of his fans, he left at the height of its success. SYNOPSIS SINOPSIS Fran spends nine months a year looking after her flock in a small town in the Ribera Navarra. In June he joins his flock with Domingo, another shepherd from a nearby town, and both of them climb their more than a thousand sheep to the fresh meadows of the Pyrenees. Nine days of travel during which the two shepherds travel along roads and highways, under highways and train tracks, through deserts, through villages and climb mountains. Fran and Domingo have been on this journey together since adolescence, and while Domingo has a family, he is alone. Fran is seriously considering quitting and pursuing falconry professionally. This year the weeks in the mountains and the return trip will be hard for both pastors, for Fran because he has doubts about the future, for Domingo because he is afraid of being left alone. The aim is to bring to the Basque audience a type of cinema that is independent, social and vindicatory, that is entirely absent from the Basque comercial circuit. Its end: to denounce the violation of Human Rights on the LGTB+ community all over the globe, to show the sexual and affective diversity and to become a meeting point throughout high-quality films. It has become one of the most important European LGBT+ film festivals, with an average of 10.000 people attending its dozen venues and 100 films programmed, only in Bilbao. It also curates cinema and awareness-raising activities throughout Basque Country. San Sebastian is a non-specialized competitive film festival. The Festival consists of the Official Section, New Directors, Horizontes Latinos, Zabaltegi - Tabakalera, Perlak, Culinary Zinema, Nest, Zinemira and Made in Spain. The San Sebastian Festival has reconfigured its structure into three main areas: a festival that selects and programmes films; a festival that promotes the development of films in post-production (Filmsto-be); and a festival that reflects on the cinema from a wide- ranging perspective: industrial, creative, educational (Thought and debate).
This is a strange year, undoubtedly it is the rarest that has lived the festival. Originally born in 1994 as a film exhibition by the hand of a group of Fantasy film lovers, and currently organized by the Department of Culture of Bilbao Town Council, Bilbao Fantasy Film Festival FANT is dedicated to films on this genre with the idea of making available, as much to fans as the general public releases that do not reach our screens through conventional channels of distribution and exhibition, as well as offering retrospectives of classic horror, mystery and science fiction films.
In this year 2020 marked by a global pandemic, both festivals Thinking Football Film Festival and Letras y Futbol, organized by the Athletic Club Foundation, merge into one. On the whole, the Thinking Football Film Festival programme aims to help raise key issues on understanding the global social phenomenon that football has become over the last one hundred years. A week of cinema, encounters and football culture, with free entry in the Sala BBK and San Mamés.
Promoted by Donostia Kultura since 1990. The best genre movies of the season are included in the program, together with cult classics. The atmosphere at the town is completed with comic-book, fx or art exhibitions, plus shows, workshops...etc. The best party of the fantastic genre! Organizada por Donostia Kultura, comenzó su andadura en 1990. El mejor cine de terror, ciencia-ficción, animación... de cada temporada se junta con proyecciones de clásicos. El ambiente de la ciudad se completa con actividades paralelas como exposiciones de cómic o efectos especiales, espectáculos diversos, talleres. Una auténtica fiesta del fantástico.
FANTBilbao nació como una muestra en 1994, de la mano de un grupo de personas aficionadas al género fantástico y en la actualidad, el organizador es el Área de Cultura del Ayuntamiento de Bilbao. FANT especializado en el cine de género, pone al alcance del público en general, estrenos que no suelen llegar a las pantallas a través de canales convencionales de distribución y exhibición, así como de ofrecer retrospectivas de cine clásico.
En este 2020 marcado por la pandemia mundial, los festivales Thinking Football Film Festival y Letras y Fútbol, organizados por la Fundación Athletic Club, se funden en uno. En conjunto, la programación de Thinking Football Film Festival pretende ayudar a plantear claves de comprensión sobre el fenómeno social y global en el que el fútbol ha devenido en el último siglo. ZINEBI is a festival that firmly supports emerging authors. The international short film contest and the ZIFF-Zinebi First Film section, are its most obvious signs of identity. It also features Mikeldis of Honour, which are awarded to acknowledge the careers of distinguished directors, and it has carefully selected Beautiful Docs and Bertoko Begiradak sections. ZINEBI INDUSTRY is yet another part of the festival, intended to promote the Basque audiovisual industry. A high-mountain festival at sea level. In December, Bilbao is full of alpinists, adventurers, sport men, filmmakers, producers and artists of international renown. Since its beginning in 2008, BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia Festival has become one of the international benchmarks within the series of film festivals related to mountaineering, climbing, adventure and extreme sports. It has also become, in record time, one of the main lures within the sector. But Mendi Film is way more than just cinema. Due to the numerous parallel activities, it keeps growing every year and bringing to everybody's reach creativity, inspiration, spreading, training and, above all, fun.
CORTADA is a short film festival that started in 1997 that takes place in the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz. Sponsored by the Campus of Alava in the Basque Country University (UPV / EHU) and VITAL Fundazioa, is a national contest that rewards works of fiction, animation and documentary, not forgetting the local proposals GUREAK grouped in sections (Basque shorts official) and HEMENGOAK (Basque shorts not official). From the 2015 edition CORTADA festival qualifies for Goya Awards by Spanish Cinema Academy, and Forqué Awards, by EGEDA. In 2020 the contest is held from 16 to 19 December.
Un festival de alta montaña a nivel del mar. Bilbao se llena en diciembre de alpinistas, aventureros, deportistas, cineastas, productores y artistas de renombre internacional. Desde que arrancara en 2008, BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia se ha convertido en uno de los grandes referentes internacionales dentro del circuito de festivales de cine de montaña, escalada, aventura y deporte extremo, llegando en tiempo récord a ser uno de los grandes reclamos del sector. Pero Mendi Film es mucho más que cine. Sus numerosas actividades paralelas hacen que año tras año siga creciendo y poniendo al alcance de todos sus visitantes creatividad, inspiración, divulgación, formación, y sobre todo, diversión.
CORTADA es un festival de cortometrajes que comenzó en 1997 que se desarrolla en la ciudad de Vitoria-Gasteiz. Auspiciado por el Campus de Álava de la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/ EHU), y por la VITAL Fundazioa, es un concurso de carácter nacional que premia a trabajos de ficción, animación y documental, sin olvidar las propuestas más locales agrupadas en las secciones GUREAK (oficial cortos vascos) y HEMENGOAK (Cortos vasco no oficial). Desde la edición de 2015 el festival califica para los Premios Goya de la Academia del Cine Español y los Premios Forqué de EGEDA. En 2020 se celebra el certamen del 16 al 19 de diciembre.
