SYNOPSIS SINOPSIA

Mikel has decided that his life needs a drastic change and so he accepts the invitation from a distant relative to travel to Argentina and restart his life there. But it won’t be long after his arrival before Mikel realizes that his “uncle” Chelo is no more than a happy-go-lucky gambling addict and alcoholic, with absolutely nothing to offer him.

In 2009, my previous film premiered at the film festival. During the promotion I remember receiving a request for friendship on the Facebook social network. He was an Argentine “relative” who saw the film and the name of the director, my name, coincided with his. I accepted the request for friendship and contacted us. Indeed, there was a familiar link between us, although very far away.

On the other hand, the writer had also had experiences with the Basque diaspora. In one of our trips to Argentina we stayed with them and to our surprise, the quote was in an Euskal Etxea and they also had prepared something very special: A great Basque party.

The festival took place with all the ingredients of the Basque culture, a culture that those present knew better than us. They knew more popular songs than us, they danced traditional dances in which we were unable to take 2 steps, they recited "bertsos"…

Years later, sharing those experiences with other friends who had traveled to another Latin American country, I discovered that they had also experienced a similar situation, and that they knew more people who had gone through similar things. But it wasn't just the Basques. Friends from other European regions or countries, Galicians, Italians, Greeks… had also experienced similar situations in American countries.

In this way, we thought that these stories could become a pretty comedy in which many people felt recognized in the situations our character experiences.

2009an estreinatu zen nire aurreko filma zinemaldian. Promozioan, gogoan dut adiskidetasun-eskaera bat jaso nuela Facebook sare sozialean. Argentinako “senide” bat zen, filma ikusi zuena, eta zuzendariaren abizena, nire izena, berea. Adiskidetasun-eskaera onartu eta harremanetan jarri ginen. Hain zuzen, familia-lotura zegoen gure artean, baina oso urrun.

Bestalde, gidoilariak euskal diasporarekin ere esperientziak izan zituen. Argentinara egindako bidaietako batean, haiekin geratu ginen, eta, gure harridurarako, hitzordua Euskal Etxe batean izan zen, eta, gainera, zerbait berezia prestatu ziguten: Euskal festa handi bat.

Jaia euskal kulturaren osagai guztiekin gertatu zen, han zeudenek guk baino hobeto ezagutzen baitzuten kultura. Guk baino herri-kanta gehiago ezagutzen zituzten, dantza tradizionalak egiten zituzten, non gu ez baikinen 2 urrats emateko gai, bertsoak errezitatzen zituzten…

Urte batzuk geroago, Latinoamerikako beste herrialde batera bidaiatu zuten lagunekin bizipen haiek partekatuz, konturatu nintzen haiek ere antzeko egoera bat bizi izan zutela, eta antzeko gauzetatik pasatako jende gehiago ezagutzen zutela. Baina ez zen euskaldunoi bakarrik gertatzen. Europako, Galiziako, Italiako, Greziako eta beste herrialde batzuetako lagunek ere antzeko egoerak bizi izan zituzten Amerikako herrialdeetan.

Horrela, uste dugu istorio horiek komedia polit bat izan zitezkeela, non pertsona asko sentituko baitira gure pertsonaiak bizi dituen egoeren aurrean.

SYNOPSIS SINOPSIA

Laura has just arrived in Madrid to study at University. One night, she accidentally meets David, who has cerebral palsy. The relationship with the boy and his mother will give Laura the push she needs to overcome her complexes and insecurities and confidently enter a new phase. A story about that vital moment when anything is possible and how the most unexpected encounters can change our lives.

“Since La herida (Wounded) it's clear that I like films based on a psychological portrait of characters who experience emotional situations at a crossroads in their life. Laura comes from a conservative environment that has nothing to do with what she finds at David's home, a kind of oasis of tolerance that she’s not used to at all. Her passage to adulthood will mainly consist of reassessing the notions that had been instilled in her and realising that everything is much more ambiguous than certain simplistic moral categorisations. It is a character that inevitably connects with the situation that we have all gone through in one way or another: emancipation, leaving the nest and the consolidation of our own identity.

But beyond that, a series of questions are set out that continue to affect us even as adults and which, in a way, are addressed to us from a place of evasive ambiguity that, inevitably, requires us to position ourselves”.

“Suro” is one of those stories based on instincts and sensations, rather than idees or concepts.

It's a character movie. The centrality of history lies in Helena and Ivan, their emotions and their points of view, changing, contradictory, in harmony and in conflict, with each other and with themselves.

The tension between the inside and the outside, between what the characters show and what they really think, has required giving a leading role to the eyes of each one, in order to be able to approach the palpable and immediate reality, so that we can reveal the world of emotions inside each character.

As a viewer, I love that sense of intuit that something is about to come, that the characters in the movie have a written destiny that we can perceive, without being able to determine it, but that they plan on the whole story.

And one thing I'm particularly interested in in in a movie is rhythm. I did not want to make a contemplative film set in the rural world. The latent tension I have talked about marks a rhythm that advances at a stroke. And I've also wanted to address that tension through the atmosphere of the movie. The scorching heat of summers in the mountain area of Alt Empordà, the risk of fires and the incessant Tramontana, are enemies of the cork campaign. I wanted the viewer to feel those elements in the atmosphere of the film, priming the warm colors, giving the photograph a dry and bright character, typical of a desert in the forest.

And I wanted this film to breathe characters and context, to move with them fluently, and to offer an immersive experience that doesn't let the viewer down to the end.

“Suro” da sena eta sentsazioetan oinarritzen diren istorio horietako bat, ez ideietan edo kontzeptuetan.

Pertsonaien filma da. Istorioaren zentralitatea Helena eta Ivanen esku dago, haien emozioetan eta ikuspuntuetan, aldakorretan, kontraesankorretan, harmonian eta gatazkan, ingurukoarekin eta bere buruarekin.

Barnekoaren eta kanpokoaren arteko tentsioak, pertsonaiek erakusten dutenaren eta benetan pentsatzen dutenaren artekoak, bakoitzaren begiradari protagonismoa eman behar izan dio, errealitate haztagarri eta berehalakora zehaztasunez hurbiltzeko, pertsonaia bakoitzaren barne-emozioen mundua ezagutarazteko.

Ikusle naizen aldetik, izugarri gustatzen zait zerbait iristear dagoela sumatzen dudan sentsazio hori, filmeko pertsonaiek patu idatzi bat dutela, hauteman dezakeguna, zehaztu ezin duguna, baina historia osoari buruzko plangintza egiten duena.

Eta film batean bereziki interesatzen zaidan zerbait erritmoa da. Ez dut landa-munduan girotutako film kontenplatiborik egin nahi izan. Aipatu dudan tentsio sorra aizkoraz aurrera doan erritmoa da. Eta tentsio hori filmeko atmosferaren bidez ere tratatu nahi izan dut. Alt Empordà mendialdeko uden bero urratzailea, sute-arriskua eta Tramontana etengabea kortxoaren kanpainaren etsaiak dira. Nahi izan dut ikusleak elementu horiek filmaren atmosferan sentitzea, kolore beroei lehentasuna emanez, argazkiari izaera lehor eta bizia emanez, basamortuko berezko izaera.

Eta nahi izan dut film honek pertsonaiak eta testuingurua errespetatzea, haiekin modu arinean mugitzea, eta ikuslea amaierara arte askatuko ez duen murgiltze-esperientzia eskaintzea.

SYNOPSIS SINOPSIA

Iciar and Fernando are young. The two go through the most traumatic experience of their brief lives: the loss of one parent. However, Fernando and Iciar cannot share pain or strategies for managing it. They live in different times. Fernando in 1977 in Bilbao faces the kidnapping of his father by ETA. Iciar in 2011 in Navarra faces the fulminant cancer of her mother.From this unexpected loss, Iciar became aware of the tragic kidnapping and murder of his grandfather, whom he never met, at the hands of ETA in 1977.

Iciar eta Fernando gazteak dira.' Bizitza laburreko esperientziarik traumatikoena bizi dute biek: gurasoetako baten galera. Baina Fernandok eta Iciarrek ezin dute oinazea partekatu, ez eta hura maneiatzeko estrategiak ere. Garai desberdinetan bizi dira. That social violence leaves traces is something that no one denies today. That this violence generates damage if it is not publicly expressed, is not constructed in the form of a story and is not shared, is something less known.

Numerous studies by anthropologists, psychiatrists and sociologists confirm that social violence is not resolved simply with a peace agreement, however important and complex it has been to reach it. The symbolic elaboration of the lived, the suffered and the lost is needed.

Somehow the fear, tensions and suffering experienced nests in our body and in our psyche, whether we want it or not, whether we know it or not, and generate in us conditioning factors that will prevent a path free from bonds and a new principle if they are not resolved. These past wounds are inherited from parents to children, conditioning behaviors and emotions, until someone dedicates to stand, look back and break the chain.

Cinema, like literature, can be a liberating vehicle through which suffering is expressed and resolved. It cannot repair the loss, nor compensate for the horror experienced, but it can contribute to a new peaceful space of coexistence where everyone feels heard. It is natural and healing that in recent times novels have appeared that try to report on what happened over 40 years of violence and 829 deaths. But it is not his contribution to the end of silence the main virtue of “The Commensal” nor the only thing that drew me initially from the project. It was the voice of her young author, Gabriela Ybarra, the discarded distance that never falls into the easy or the sentimental, getting emotional.

SYNOPSIS SINOPSIA

Ever since their creation in 1940 until their dissolution in 1961 the Basque group Los Xey was one of the most famous singing groups in the world. Not only did they triumph in Spain but also in America from Argentina to the US but they left a lasting impression for many generations, even inaugurating Mexican television besides taking part in numerous films and recordings.

In this documentary we will recover their memory in the 21st century accompanied by their modern day counterparts the Golden Apple Quartet.

Sortu zirenetik 1940an desegin ziren arte 1961ean, Los Xey munduko ahots-musikako talderik ospetsuenetakoa izan zen.

Ez zuten arrakasta Espainian bakarrik erdietsi baita Amerikan ere, 9 urtez Argentinatik Estatu Batuetaraino herrialdez herrialde ibili baiziren, Mexico eta Cubako telebistetako hasieratan parte hartuz. Belaunaldi askorentzat arrasto ezabaezina utzi zuten.

Their excellent voices, repertoire, humour, etc. What were the musical keys to their success? How did it change their lives? What was behind that could be defined as the American dream?

They lived in troubled times, that is, the post-war from Peron’s Argentina in the 40s to pre-revolutionary Cuba, where they met the lowest classes and the most powerful elite, not to mention communities of Basque emigrants and republican refugees. We want to narrate the social context of their successful musical career.

9 years touring America, some with their families and others made there. Sabin Olaskoaga and Xipri Larrañaga portrayed the human side in detail in their memoirs.

A woman was almost called ‘Avioneta’ (Small Airplane) at birth. Another had a library in the back seat of her car. Yet another fractures her finger with the rebel shelves of her bookshop. Lectors read to cigar makers while they work. Women remember poems while they iron. And to them all I sing. Standing against fire, water, moths, dust, ignorance and fanaticism, an anonymous female army looks after books. An intimate resistance, lacking epic events, revolution or weapons.

Can books kill?, should some books be torched?, why are libraries gardens?, who are the guardians of libraries?, what does singing to women and books mean?

Virgil, the quintessential Latin poet, began the Aeneid by stating “Of arms and the man I sing...”. And we wanted the film’s title to hint at that verse, because even if our intentions are almost the opposite, we also want to engage in dialogue with past tradition.

This film is the portrait of four characters and their books. Women who have spent their lives reading and studying and so, safeguarding a precious heritage. They are Tonina, survivor of her own library’s collapse, and collector of Dante figurines; Wal, who, as a child, only had two books at home -a recipe book and a bible- and who is now a Goethe specialist and talks about him as if he were an old friend; Loreto, who dresses up as the authors and characters she reads about, and recites her favourite passages; and lastly Viki, who, for a while, kept the literature belonging to the Labour Party of Spain in the trunk of her car and travelled around the province lending books to workers. All of them exemplify different conceptions of literature, of reading, but at the same time are brought together by literature, very present and intertwined with their lives.

Portraying these women also involves inquiring into the nature of images. And asking ourselves what a literary image is, what a cinematography image is, and how to switch from one to another. And I think this is where the film’s real cinematography or authorship lies.

Why “BI ARNAS” (two breaths)?

This documentary tells the story of two breaths: on the one hand Iratxe Sorzabal's breath; on the other, her mother's, Mari Nieves Diaz. Both, each on their own way, have been suffocated by torture. The former has lived in person how her breath left her body. The latter has felt it through the body of the daughter who was once part of her. This story wants to narrate those two invisible breaths, their suffocation, their double suffering. This is the story of Iratxe's agony, heard mainly through the mother's voice and memories, and supported by her daughter's own voice when possible.

Ander sospecha que, al igual que muchos otros, lo que padeció su padre en comisaría fue tortura. Mientras resuelve sus sospechas se sumerge en el mundo de los médicos forenses, psicólogos, psiquiatras y abogados que han elaborado el "Proyecto de investigación de la tortura y malos tratos en el País Vasco entre 19602014". Junto a ellos ahonda en conceptos como la tortura psicológica o el Protocolo de Estambul, dándonos a conocer la realidad de la tortura en el norte global.

Even though the condemnation of torture had been a feature in my world, when I want to the presentation of the report from the Basque Institute of Criminology I saw the light. The incidence, dimension, scientific methodology and, most importantly, the capacity of torture to remain in the shadows surpassed my worst nightmares. In the documentary I start from an incident in my family, as this will help the spectator to accompany me on the journey, but during these six years our obsession has been to explain the dimension of modern torture in its totality, using the Basque case. Although directors think that each film is the most important in the world, the fact is that as a filmmaker you rarely have the chance to do something that has the potential to contribute something significant to society, and I think that this is one such case. Looking to the future, I would like this film to be remembered as the referential film with regard to what has happened in the heart of the West, that it will be a driving force for divulging what has happened and will lead to a social movement for reparation and measures to prevent any repetition.

In 2016, while working on another project, I met Vicky Lee, owner of The WayOut trans club in London. I was fascinated by her story and impressed by the impact and effect her club has had on the lives of many trans people. At The WayOut club they feel free to be themselves without being judged or their lives in danger. It is a place where they can express themselves, they can chat, dance and socialize in a safe environment. Our film tells the survival story of 5 people who are linked through the WayOut club, their safe haven. There's a little bit of everything for everyone in the film, and while it's a documentary that depicts some very rough experiences, it's also full of hope, joy and disco music that will make us want to dance again. Making this film has made me more aware of my own privilege as a cis person and I hope that this learning experience will be trasmitted through my film and that My Way Out will bring visibility to the trans community.

MUAK ECO FIGHT is a digital fanzine. The season showcased focuses on the environmental struggle through interviews with various ecological participants.

There are animal rights activists, marijuana legalists, natural wine producers, or just regular people converted to veganism and urban folk went into exile at the countryside. They all have in common a strong ecological conscience and act on a daily basis for the well-being of our planet.

MUAK ECO FIGHT fanzine digitala da. Erakutsi den denboraldiak ingurumenaren aurkako borroka du ardatz, hainbat partaide ekologistari egindako elkarrizketen bidez. Badira animalien eskubideen aldeko aktibistak, marihuana legalistak, ardo ekoizle naturalak edo beganismora bihurtutako ohiko jendea eta hiriko jendea landa erbestera joan zena. MUAK “Eco Fight” is a bizarre audiovisual object that uses the image codes of its time. the crossing of different genres that are the TV Show but also the happening or the interview.

For its first season, the digital fanzine MUAK ECO FIGHT is a short series that proposes the development of ideas around ecology in an entertaining way. In addition, I've also decided to mix the serious with the fun, so that we can create a free space, where we can laugh at sacred themes like ecology today. Mixing the serious with the gamber is a provocation, which I find interesting when it comes to pushing reflections on the developed theme, within our audience. In my opinion, satire still has a high critical value, and it still exists. MUAK Eco Fight is also born of this reflection.

My Grandfather’s Demons is an animation feature film that centres its narrative in Rosa, a young city woman who lives an agitated life pursuing the social gratification that money and the city seem to bring her.

With this film, I mean to create an identification with a way of life that so many times consumes us, makes us retreat form our most profound being and pushes us into automatic actions that distance us from the Other. Independence turned isolation and pushed away the need we have of living connected to a community.

Rosa’s search is directly connected with taking comfort form the Others embrace, to the need of friendship connections, to sharing and to mutual help. We all need the Other’s presence an the human bonds that grow beyond the pursuit of economic independence ant the illusion that it creates for us. This film also works on the clash between time lived in the city, where it never seems to be enough and where we end up just reacting, driven by the pressure of daily stress, and Time in the country life, where it seems to slow down, allowing us to think and contemplate.

Lucía is 8 years old and is a girl with a penis whom everyone calls Aitor, who longs for the arrival of summer to leave behind the hostile school climate. Ane, Lucía's mother, mired in a professional and sentimental crisis, will take advantage of the holidays to travel with her three children to her mother's house, where her mother and her aunt Lourdes reside, closely linked to beekeeping and the production of honey. After the death of his father, Tamara has to resume contact with his uncle Leonardo, who sees in her the future heir of the family legacy: a warehouse full of sculptures and drawings made by his grandfather, the anarchist artist Joaquín Lucarini. Tamara, who has chosen to live outside family histories, will have to take a position on it and resize the name and family work within its own codes.

Zinegoak, Bilbao International LGTB+ film festival was launched in 2004. The aim is to bring to the Basque audience a type of cinema that is independent, social and vindicatory, that is entirely absent from the Basque comercial circuit. Its end: to denounce the violation of Human Rights on the LGTB+ community all over the globe, to show the sexual and affective diversity and to become a meeting point throughout high-quality films. It has become one of the most important European LGBT+ film festivals, with an average of 10.000 people attending its dozen venues and 100 films programmed, only in Bilbao. It also curates cinema and awarenessraising activities throughout Basque Country.

Zinegoak 2004an sortu zen, Bilboko eta Euskadiko gainerako lurraldeetako ikus-entzuleei zinema independente, sozial eta errebindikatiboa gerturatzeko asmoz. Originally born in 1994 as a film exhibition by the hand of a group of Fantasy film lovers, and currently organized by the Department of Culture of Bilbao Town Council, Bilbao Fantasy Film Festival FANT is dedicated to films on this genre with the idea of making available, as much to fans as the general public releases that do not reach our screens through conventional channels of distribution and exhibition, as well as offering retrospectives of classic horror, mystery and science fiction films.

FANTBilbao erakusketa gisa sortu zen 1994an, fantasiazko generoa gustuko duen talde baten eskutik, eta, gaur egun, antolatzailea Bilboko Udaleko Kultura Arloa da. FANT generoko zineman espezializatuta dago, eta publiko orokorraren eskura jartzen ditu banaketa- eta erakusketa-kanal konbentzionalen bidez pantailetara iristen ez diren estreinaldiak, bai eta zinema klasikoko atzera begirakoak eskaintzen dituztenak ere.

In this year 2020 marked by a global pandemic, both festivals Thinking Football Film Festival and Letras y Futbol, organized by the Athletic Club Foundation, merge into one. On the whole, the Thinking Football Film Festival programme aims to help raise key issues on understanding the global social phenomenon that football has become over the last one hundred years. ZINEBI – the only international Class A festival in Spain in the documentary and short film category recognised by FIAPF since 1974, accredited by the Hollywood Academy as a qualifier for the Oscars and by the Spanish Academy for the Goya Awards.

ZINEBI is a festival that firmly supports emerging authors. The international short film contest and the ZIFF-Zinebi First Film section, are its most obvious signs of identity. It also features Mikeldis of Honour, which are awarded to acknowledge the careers of distinguished directors, and it has carefully selected Beautiful Docs and Bertoko Begiradak sections. ZINEBI INDUSTRY is yet another part of the festival, intended to promote the Basque audiovisual industry.

Zinebi, Espainiako A klaseko nazioarteko jaialdi bakarra film laburren eta dokumentalen kategorian, FIAPFek 1974tik aitortua, Hollywoodeko Akademiak Oscar sarien eta Goya sarien kalifikatzaile gisa kreditatua.

Zinebi gorabidean diren egileen aldeko apustu sendoa egiten duen jaialdia da. Film laburren nazioarteko lehiaketa eta ZIFF-Zinebi Firts Film saila dira film laburren ezaugarri nagusienak. Organised by the Underwater Activities Section of the Real Sociedad Donostia - San Sebastian since 1975, the objective of the International Cycle of Underwater Film is to show the audience the wonders of the submarine world that surround us in this blue world, and divers can see and enjoy. The program includes conferences by submarine filming professionals and underwater field experts.

Bilbao International School Zinema Fest celebrates its 2020 edition from 23 to 27 November with the participation of some of the most important film schools worldwide. In addition to contributing to the dissemination of the most up-to-date audiovisual creation, for five days the festival will become a reference and a framework for reflection for new trends in the international film scene, weaving a network of collaboration and encouraging the exchange of ideas, experiences and knowledge.

A high-mountain festival at sea level. In December, Bilbao is full of alpinists, adventurers, sport men, filmmakers, producers and artists of international renown. Since its beginning in 2008, BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia Festival has become one of the international benchmarks within the series of film festivals related to mountaineering, climbing, adventure and extreme sports. It has also become, in record time, one of the main lures within the sector.

But Mendi Film is way more than just cinema. Due to the numerous parallel activities, it keeps growing every year and bringing to everybody's reach creativity, inspiration, spreading, training and, above all, fun.

Itsas mailako goi-mendiko jaialdia. Bilbo alpinista, abenturazale, kirolari, zinemagile, ekoizle eta nazioarteko artista ospetsuz betetzen da abenduan. 2008an hasi zenetik, BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia nazioarteko erreferente nagusietako bat bihurtu da mendiko, eskaladako, abenturako eta muturreko kiroleko zinemaldien zirkuituan, eta sektoreko erakargarritasun handienetako bat izatera iritsi da denbora errekorrean.
