CLIFF emerged from the free adaptation of The Contents of Silence, a novel by Lucía Etxebarria. Based on real events, the film narrates the story of the disappearance of young Cordelia in the Canary Islands. Her brother, Gabriel, receives news of a mass suicide by a sect and discovers that his sister was one of the members. Wasting no time, Gabriel travels to the islands and immerses himself in the search for his missing sister. The title chosen for the film, CLIFF, alludes not only to the striking geographical landmark that punctuates the screen, but also to the psychological and emotional situation in which the protagonists find themselves. The film explores the themes of disappearance, identity, guilt and loss. I’ve used the structure of the thriller as a dynamic element that permits me to investigate the hidden motivations of the characters. My intention was to create a visual atmosphere and rhythm to help the spectator enter into the dark world of the sect and penetrate the complex relationships between the different characters that inhabit the film. To achieve this, we constructed two plots that advance simultaneously, one in the present and another in the past, like a temporal intersection. Sîpo Phantasma is, in a sense, a ghost movie. When I started filming it, I wasn’t really sure what I was making. I only had a ship’s logbook with blank pages in it. It was pure coincidence that a journey and some images taken on a cruise came together with reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula and finding out about the author’s wife, Florence Balcombe. As I looked into it, different stories came out and the film started to weave itself into being from threads which were as fragile as they were intriguing. Following the structure of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Sîpo Phantasma is made up of different voices and indirect narratives (diaries, letters, articles, pieces of news, extracts from books, telegrams…) letting the spectator move from one to another and make the links between the various chapters: ocean liners like ghost towns on the high seas; Florence Balcombe’s life and obsession; the advent and disappearance of dyed film reels; Nosferatu, F.W Murnau’s movie adaptation of Dracula; ghost ships left adrift; the discovery of blood circulation; premonitory shipwrecks; Russian schooners… This is also a movie about stories and images being appropriated. Ocean liners and the cinema were invented in the same period. And, in essence, they have changed little since they first appeared. You only have to see how shots taken 100 years ago – before there were tendencies, styles or cinema schools – and the ones in this film come together in a magical, disturbing way. In a sense, making movies, filming, turns people, landscapes and objects into immortal spirits. This means that Sîpo Phantasma is also a confession. The confession that we film-makers are vampires who feed off the work, stories and lives of those around us.

Part thriller, part horror movie, the “Glass Coffin” largely plays out with just one actor (Paola Bontempi) and one location (the interior of a limousine), as the film takes us on a disturbing leap through the looking glass that divides our world from the inaccessible and ostensibly glamorous world of celebrity. “The Glass Coffin” twists the minimalist elements out of which the plot is constructed, until the story, built into a labyrinth of mirrors, turns in on itself in a disturbing exercise of symmetry. Just like a reflection, everything is part true, part lie. For at heart, “The Glass Coffin” is a story of reflections – reflections that show us our own image trapped in a world of unachievable aspirations, staring back darkly at us from the other side… ...our own guilt-ridden gaze. GERNIKA is a story of lost passion and the jaded cynicism of someone who has seen it all and who lets themselves be swept along by circumstances... Yet it also about how that sense of excitement can be recovered, about someone learning to make their vocation the driving force in their life once more, understanding that it is possible to change things if they want, that they can be the heroes of their own story, rather than allowing themselves to drift aimlessly. The story is told through some highly nuanced characters (inspired by real figures, including Ernest Hemingway, Robert Capa, and George Steer) with rough edges that make them especially appealing.

SYNOPSIS SINOPSIA Unable to fly the nest due to the economic crisis that grips Spain, a penniless, young couple have trouble consummating their fledgling relationship in their parents’ homes. As they become increasingly desperate to make love and with no money to afford a hotel, they are forced to look for local public hotspots used for sex, known as picaderos. However, things are never as easy as they seem and their relationship is quickly tested as they try to break free from the shackles of a crumbling economy. I wanted to tell a straightforward story about a young couple’s relationship and the various challenges they face because of their economic circumstances. But also, I wanted to examine how twenty somethings look at their futures and make decisions on what to do with their lives. Of course, the impact of the economic crisis makes these decisions even more difficult because of the lack of opportunity. Pikadero’s aesthetic is inherently linked to the style of humour and the mode of storytelling, which together encapsulate the feel of this film. A lot of my inspiration comes from a group of directors known for their stylistic use of dead-pan observational comedy. Elia Sulieman’s “The Time that Remains” was the film that made me want to be a director. His carefully composed static shots create subtle, deadpan tableaus of observational comedy out of the bitter realities of the Palestinian occupation. Another key inspiration is Eran Kolirin’s “The Band’s Visit”, which again creates humour from simple realities through the use of camera composition, colour and observation. The dialogue is key to the humour but it is the way that the dialogue is presented through the lens that creates the style. Aki Kaurismaki is another major inspiration and advocate of this style and humour. The film’s style is designed to give beauty, quirkiness, charm and a depth in humour to this story that I believe cannot be achieved with other, more orthodox approaches. Of course, the absence of camera movement seeks to represent the stasis of the “Lost Generation” and without this, it would be a very different film.

Birdboy will need to overcome his inner demons if he is to catch up with Dinki in time to help her in her adventure and save himself in the process. The aesthetic and the narrative structure of Psiconautas, the Forgotten Children are similar to those of the traditional children’s story or fable, but here they are approached from an iconoclastic perspective. Although the story plays out in a fantasy world, it contains some very real references and strong parallels to our contemporary society. This anti-story, far from contenting itself with being a model of initiation to maturity, revels in the disquiet of rejection. There are repellent pets, children formed into criminal gangs, Birdboy, who constantly plays with the notion of selfdestruction, a trio of friends who try to escape by smoking “funny cigarettes”… None of them, including the trigger-happy police dogs, behaves in any way like the usual protagonists of children’s stories: they pop anti-depressants, drop out of school to peddle drugs and plan ways of running away from home. The adaptation highlights the perversity of the conventional microcosm of anthromorphic animals, by parodying the clichés of classical animated films. Baskavígin: The Slaying of the Basque Whalers is Old Port Films’ first own production and also the first documentary feature film I have directed. This is, without doubt, our largest project to date. In making this film, we had to surmount numerous challenges and overcome our limitations as a small production company with a limited budget. We also felt a strong sense of responsibility towards the story – a story that we wanted to tell, and tell properly. Despite the title –Baskavígin: The Slaughter of the Basque Whalers– this is not a documentary about murder. It is a statement about the way in which two cultures find a way coming to terms with a traumatic event that divides them, and in doing so, are brought even closer together. SYNOPSIS SINOPSIA At the age of 19, Eduardo Chillida (1942-2002) was a gifted athlete set to become a football legend. However, a severe injury during a match saww him move away from professional sport. At the time, nobody except for his life-long partner, Pilar Belzunce, could ever imagine that the young goalkeeper from Hernani was at the verge of re-writing his destiny. Chillida would die a few decades later as one of the most prominent sculptors of the 20th century. Chillida’s personality is perpetuated through his work, his eight children and some of his closest collaborators. 19 urte zituenean, Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002) futbolari ospetsua bilakatzeko bidean zegoen baina lesio batek kiroletik aldendu zuen. How to speak about such a relevant artist as Chillida and not be faced with nostalgia, hagiography, or outright praise? Eduardo Chillida’s work keeps all its vitality intact. It invites us to experience a acute sensory experience and contains a subtle but wondrous sensuality. Our aim was to be mere listeners and prick up our ears until we manage to appreciate the nuances of the silent music that dwell within his iron, alabaster or paper sculptures. We wanted to be true to the dance of his shapes and give ourselves to the task of filming the present footprints and words of those who lived very close to him, the questions raised by his work as well as the terrible and luminous shade left behind by the now-deceased artist. I first got the idea for this project one afternoon when I was driving Itxaso and Maier (her mother) back from adaptation classes at the Aspace centre, where Itxaso was due to start classes that year. Maier can’t drive: her life has been lived out amidst neurologists, unfinished university studies and outof-hours work to try to provide for Itxaso – a sweet, charming little girl with a serious neurological disability that means she can neither walk no talk. Maier and I have been friends since childhood. She is a cheerful, lively woman. Over those days of driving them back and forth, adapting my timetable to be able to drive them to the centre, in those eternal traffic jams, I learned something about the loneliness of being the mother of a child with a disability. And I was deeply moved to meet Itxaso’s classmates, because it was easy to see that behind each one, there was a story of self-realisation just as arduous yet just as beautiful as that of Itxaso and her family. I also understood just how much my attitude –and that of other people– meant to them. As I tried to sort out all those different feelings, I discussed with Maier the possibility of making a documentary telling her and Itxaso’s story. It would have to be a dynamic documentary that would convey the real situation of those children and their little big world in positive terms. I am convinced that just as happened in my case, presenting these children’s story to a wider public in positive terms is an indispensable tool for promoting their social integration. The figures are striking: five out of every hundred children have some form of disability; what the statistics can’t measure, though, is our own ignorance of such cases.

SYNOPSIS SINOPSIA A young filmmaker travels back home to Basque Country to follow three friends on a surreal nautical voyage. Riding a second-hand paddle boat, they pedal over 150km along the entire Basque coast from Hendaia (French Basque Country) to Bilbao in an attempt to rediscover their country’s shoreline. However, as a paddle boat is not made for the rough Basque sea, things don’t go as planned. The journey becomes a delirium with unforeseen accidents, folkloric parties, hangovers, a shaman, a funeral... Documenting the expedition of these “sailors” on his own, the filmmaker finds himself on a parallel inner journey. Zinemagile hasiberri bat hiru laguni segika dabil bidaia nautiko surrealista batean. In the winter of 2012, my friend and artist Joseba Etxeberria told me his idea to take a trip in a paddle boat along the Basque coast. He asked if I wanted to join the crew, along with Jon and Eneko, to which I replied “No, no, no, I’ll make a documentary instead!” The image of three friends on a paddle boat traveling along the Basque coast seemed as absurd as it did fascinating. As if it was in response to a primal necessity, something difficult to explain, but that resonated within me. I try to articulate this necessity through the film. The filming was a rugged and intense experience. At times, the fact that I was spending my summer vacation following three friends riding a paddle boat seemed totally absurd to me. However, something made them continue paddling and didn’t allow me to stop recording. In a journal I took notes about what was happening. When I finished shooting and returned to these notes, I realized that they were charged with emotion opposite to that of the image of a paddle boat floating in the sea. However, in that gap between what my camera recorded and what I really experienced, I found something pathetic and poetic that I was drawn to. Consequently, I decided to elaborate a tale in which the hallucinatory feat of these three “sailors” coexists with the personal life of the one who tells it.

Doubtlessly, it is a big challenge and responsibility to reflect the story of such a special person as Richard. At the same time, we are attracted by the idea of the viewer being part of the film, breathing in every Richard´s stroke, perhaps in his last months as a professional swimmer. However, people will not be touched just by the medals of the greatest swimmer with cerebral palsy of all time; or, at least, that will not be the only reason to be impressed. If there is something that inspires us to carry on with this project, it is Richard´s humanity. His ability for empathy turns out to be vital. Disabilities mark the Paralympic Games, a strange and unknown event for many people. Without a doubt, the aesthetic attracts attention. Those are some Games where the drama of all athletics’ personal struggle and story are taken out. Even though stories are different among them, they all share a strength that rubs off on others. Personally I consider that we are facing a great opportunity to let people know a beautiful story. The viewer will blend in with Richard´s and his family´s story; hard in some moments, but in the end, truly gratifying. The moment I told Richard and his family the idea of making a film about their story is engraved on my memory. What is more, I have Richard´s gaze, while listening to me, etched on my mind. Now we just have to imagine him seating in front of a screen while his own story is being reflected in his retinas. At that moment his life will be an example, which he has represented over the years, but captured in an inspiring film.

SYNOPSIS SINOPSIA 1938. Barcelona in the midst of a civil war. A group of artists makes a musical and surrealist movie. The roll of film of that movie disappeared when, a few months after having dreamed of a fantastic world, reality, in the form of defeat, crushed any illusion. Gerardo Lizarraga, painter, artist and one of those responsable people for that crazy story, crossed the border in 1939. Lot of projects stayed behind. Sometimes someone else reaped the fruits. Sometimes they got lost without retrieval. By chance, while he was imprisoned in the french camps, someone paid attention to him and filmed him. Several years later, the cameraman and the painter met up again in Mexico. At that moment both were part of the artists and intellectual’s group who fled Europe. 1938 urtean, Bartzelonan, sortzailez eta artistez osaturiko lan talde bat musikala eta surrealista omen zen luzemetrai batean lan egiten ari zen. The Official Selection presents a selection of the most recent and unseen feature films made worldwide in the last year, all in competition for the Golden Shell and for the rest of the Official awards. In addition, The New Directors competition exhibits first works made by filmmakers across the world, and Horizontes Latinos shows the best Latin American feature films. The program is completed with the following sections: Zabaltegi, with the most varied, surprising and appealing films of the year; Pearls with the best feature films of the year acclaimed by the critic and/or winners of international festival awards; Culinary Zinema; Savage Cinema; Zinemira; Made in Spain… Moreover, the program includes two retrospectives: a classic one and a thematic or contemporary one.

Organised by Donostia Kultura, the Horror and Fantasy Film Festival took its fi rst steps in 1990. Horror movies, sci-fi , animation, short films, classics from all over the world… alternate with shows, exhibitions, concerts, comic-book encounters, edition of books… The Old Town becomes during some days in a big horror party.
Organised by the Underwater Activities Section of the Real Sociedad San Sebastian since 1975, the objective of the Submarine film festival is to show the audience the wonders of the submarine world that surround us in this blue world, and divers can see and enjoy. The program includes discussions and conferences by submarine filming professionals and underwater field experts.
Zinegoak, the Bilbao International Gay- Lesbian-Trans Film Festival was launched in 2004. The aim is to bring to a Bilbao audience (and a wider Basque one) a type of cinema that is independent, social and vindicatory that is entirely absent from the Basque commercial circuit. Its end: denounce the violation of Human Rights on the LGTB community all over the globe, show the sexual and affective diversity and become a meeting point throughout highquality films. At this moment, it has become one of the most important European LGTB film festivals, with an average of 10.000 people attending its dozen venues and 100 films programmed, only in Bilbao. It also creates cinema and awareness-raising activities in over 30 towns throughout Basque Country.
Donostia Kulturak antolatuta, Fantasiazko eta Beldurrezko Zinemaren Asteak 1990ean hasi zuen bere ibilbidea. Beldurrezko, zientzia fikziozko, animaziozko zinea, film laburrak, eta mundu osoko klasikoak aurkituko dituzue antzerki, erakusketa, kontzertu, eta komiki eta liburu argitalpen bezalako jarduladien artean. Zinegoak 2004ean jaio zen, bilboko eta euskadiko ikuslegoari zinema independientea, soziala, eta aldarrikatzailea eskaintzeko asmoz, erakusketa komertzialaren zirkuituan ez delako aurkitzen horrelakorik. Helburua: mundu osoko LGTB biztanleriaren giza eskubideen bortxaketa salatu, sexuafektibitate aniztasuna erakutsi eta kalitatezko zinearen bitartez bilgune bilakatu.Europako LGTB festibalik nagusietako bat. 10.000 ikus-entzule inguru biltzen ditu; Bilboko dozena aretotan egiten da, 100 bat emanaldirekin, eta Euskadi osoko 30tik gora udalerritara zabaltzen diren emanaldi eta sentsibilizazio ekitaldirekin.

Originally born in 1994 as a film exhibition by the hand of a group of Fantasy films lovers, and currently organized by the Department of Culture and Education of Bilbao Town Council, Bilbao Fantasy Film Festival FANT is dedicated to films of this genre with the idea of making available, as much to fans as the general public (particularly the youngest film goers) releases that do not reach our screens through conventional channels of distribution and exhibition, as well as offering retrospectives of classic horror, mystery and science fiction films.
Bilbao Web Fest is a festival that presents a selection of the best basque and international webseries. It is a pioneer festival and its main goal is to serve as a communication space between audiovisual experts and webseries creators, attracting the whole world’s interest towards our city. The Bilbao Web Market is the first fair/market which is specifically dedicated to the web series, oriented to professionals that want to make deals during the festival. The activities include a co-production Forum, Case Studies, Project Pitching, One to One meetings, Screenings, Producer’s Round Tables.
Core activity of Kultura, Communication y Desarrollo KCD NGOD, it is an annual celebration that aims to show a diverse range of films that are full of social commitment, normally excluded from conventional cinemas. Its content revolves around four main themes: Sustainable Development, Human Rights, Interculturality and Gender Equality. It conducts positive action in order to promote the equality between women and men; probably the only Festival in the world which distributes their films equitably.
Bilboko Zinemaldi Fantastikoa (FANT) erakustaldi bezala jaio zen 1994ean zale batzuen eskutik eta gaur egun Bilboko Udaleko Kultura Sailak antolatutzen du. Bere asmoa, bide arruntetatik heltzen ez ziren pelikulen estreinaldiak ikusleen, batez ere gazteen, eskura jartzea eta baita beldur, misterio, edota zientzia fikziozko klasikoen atzera begirakoak egitea zen.
Bilbao Web Fest dugu euskal websail onenen eta nazioartemailan egindako websail onenen aukeraketa bat eskaintzen duen jaialdia. Euskal Herrian aitzindari den jaialdi honek ikus- entzunezko adituentzako eta websailen sortzaileentzako komunikazio espazio bat sortzea du helburu, begirada guztiak gure hirira erakarriz. Bilbao Web Market munduko web sailen lehenengo azoka/merkatua da, jaialdian negozioak egin nahi dituzten profesionalentzako zuzendua. Izango diren jardueren artean, koproduziozko eztabaida leku bat, Develop foro bat, “Kasuikasketak”, proiektuen aurkezpenak, “batbakoitzeko” elkarrizketak, ikustatzeak eta produktoreen mahaiinguruak egingo dira.
KCD GGKE elkartearen ekimen nagusia da, eta helbura da ohiko zinemek bazter utzitako zine anitza eta gizarte-konpromisoz josia hedatzea. Hala, lau ardatz handiren inguruan oinarritzen da jaialdia: garapen iraunkorra, giza eskubideak, kulturartekotasuna eta genero-berdintasuna. Founded in 1959 and currently organized by Bilbao Town Hall’s department of culture, Bilbao International Documentary and Short Film Festival (Zinebi) recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) as an international competition of the highest quality has as its fundamental objectives to bring to the people of Bilbao the most recent world production of short films and documentaries, paying special attention to the Basque, Latin America and Spanish sphere, as well as to promote the Basque audiovisual industry and Bilbao as an ideal space for filming all kind of audiovisual projects through the Bilbao Bizkaia Film Commission (BiFiC ).
A high-mountain festival at sea level. In December, Bilbao is full of alpinists, adventurers, sport men, filmmakers, producers and artists of international renown. Since its beginning in 2008, Bilbao Mendi Film Festival has become one of the international benchmarks within the series of film festivals related to mountaineering, climbing, adventure and extreme sports. It has also become, in record time, one of the main lures within the sector. But BMFF is way more than just cinema. Due to the numerous parallel activities, it keeps growing every year and bringing to everybody’s reach creativity, inspiration, spreading, training and, above all, fun.
CORTADA is a short fi lm festival that started in 1997 that takes place in the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz. Sponsored by the Campus of Alava in the Basque Country University (UPV / EHU), is a national contest that rewards works of fi ction, animation and documentary, not forgetting the local proposals GUREAK grouped in sections (short Basques) and HEMENGOAK (Short Alava). Two new sections are Unilabur (students from universities in Spain) and Ehulabur (UPV/EHU students). From the 2015 edition CORTADA festival qualifies for Goya Awards.
Fundado en 1959 y organizado actualmente por el Área de Cultura del Ayuntamiento de Bilbao, el Festival Internacional de Cine Documental y Cortometraje de Bilbao (ZINEBI), reconocido por la Federación Internacional de Asociaciones de Productores de Films (FIAPF) como un certamen de la máxima categoría internacional competitiva, tiene como objetivos fundamentales acercar al público bilbaíno la producción mundial más reciente de cortometrajes y documentales- particularmente en los ámbitos vasco, español y latinoamericano-, así como impulsar la industria audiovisual del País Vasco y promover nuestra ciudad como espacio ideal para el rodaje de todo tipo de proyectos audiovisuales a través de la Bilbao Bizkaia Film Commission (BiFiC).
