Protective helmets are compulsory for cyclists under the age of 16. Cyclists must use the cycle lanes; if there isn’t one, stay in the lane closest to the pavement. Using the bus lane is not permitted. Bikes can only ride on pavements that are wider than 5 metres.

Be aware that drinking alcohol in the street is illegal, and you can be fined from 30€ – 1500€ according to the severity of the disturbance. Bikinis and shirts-off is just for the beach, cover up in town. The police can fine people for buying goods from unauthorised street traders as well as the sellers themselves.

Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sound carries up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. 1. PASSEIG DE GRÀCIA If you are drawn to classic and chic labels, then head straight to Passeig de Gràcia. This luxurious boulevard boasts beautiful buildings and décor, including the magnificent Casa Batlló and La Pedrera.

Many of the most prestigious fashion shops and brands in Barcelona are located here, including Bulgari, Gucci, Hermès, Prada, Emporio Armani, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. If you are on a budget, or don’t want to splash out as far as a pair of Jimmy Choo stilettos, then check out the high-street stores such as Zara, Mango and H&M with their aspirational knock-offs.

This boulevard crosses the Modernist Eixample district and leads from Plaça de Catalunya to Diagonal. One of the trendiest shopping streets in Barcelona, international brands and exquisite local designers present their latest offerings in its small boutiques and larger stores.
Just below Plaça de Catalunya you'll find this pedestrian street which is brimming with top high street stores such as El Corte Inglés, Zara and Cortefiel. There are also lots of several shoe shops, and sparkles from Swarovski. It's a short stroll from here to the Cathedral, and you'll find plenty of boutiques and quirky stores in the nearby streets of the Gothic quarter.
5. GRÀCIA Once an independent village, Gràcia still retains a strong sense of its own identity; alternative, slightly bohemian, and very Catalan. Gràcia provides the classic high street stores found throughout Barcelona, as well as more arty, funky and independent boutiques. It is popular with students and has lots of squares lined with bars and terraces.

This wide avenue has been recently renovated and its tree-lined pedestrian promenade is full of elegant shops. Its shopping area stretches from the top of Passeig de Gràcia to Plaça Francesc Macià and continues towards Maria Cristina and the L'illa Diagonal shopping centre.

It may be low season, but Barcelona is one of Europe's top city destinations all year round. You can avoid the queues and often pay a reduced rate by booking tickets to visit top attractions directly from their websites.
This is by far the biggest flea market in Barcelona and a real treasure trove of second hand and vintage items, from clothes to furniture and accessories. It is open every Mon, Wed, Fri & Sat from 09:00-20:00. Arrive early! Castillejos, 158
As we all know, pickpockets are active in crowded areas such as the metro, on the airprt bus and train, and La Rambla, and they're fast. Leave your unnecessary documents, cards and cash somewhere safe.
UNDUBBED FILMS AT THE CINEMA Maybe it's raining, or maybe you just fancy relaxing in front of the big screen whilst on holiday. There are several cinemas which screen films in English and other original languages. In Gràcia you'll find the Cine Verdi (Verdi, 21) and Verdi Park (Torrijos, 39). The Yelmo Icaria also shows 3D films and is located in Port Olímpic (Salvador Espriu, 61).
LAPTOP CRISIS? If you’re one of the increasing numbers of global nomads who combine travel and work, and your laptop goes kaput while in Barcelona, you can reach out for IT support for PC and Mac from CiberVirreina Informática. BRUNCH O'CLOCK? It's too late for breakfast, but not quite lunch time... so where should you be heading? The Meatpacking Bistro (Travessera de Gràcia, 50-52) has a New York feel with a Catalan twist. From a lip-smacking full English to variations on the theme of Eggs Benedict and jazzy omelets head to The Benedict (Gignas 23). Immersive selfie art at Colorama This is one of the first immersive art experiences that has ever opened in the city, and offers a haven for selfie-fans. The exhibition includes ten uniquely designed rooms where you can take fun and memorable photos as a special souvenir of your visit to the city. The organizers collaborated with local Catalan artists and students from the Barcelona Art Academy to create the space. Each room has its own theme with creative details and a special flair. The “Galaxy Room” is painted like a night sky and serves tasty donuts on a conveyor belt, designed with sweet, galaxy icing. The “Cotton Candy Room” has massive, pink cotton candy-like clouds hanging from the ceiling, straight from a Katy Perry music video. The “Ocean Ball Pit” invites you to take a dip with a tropical sunset as your background. Street art tour Barcelona is a gigantic open-air exhibition of world-class graffiti and urban street art which changes every night. To discover its hidden gems, we suggest you hook up with the Barcelona Street Style Tour, who will guide you to some of the city’s best and freshest work. The skater hangouts around the MACBA are a hotbed, all major artists have a piece here. Move in any direction and you will find treasure after treasure. There are also a lot of older pieces here as you move deeper into the Raval. Jardins de les Tres Xemeneies has a designated painting area with larger works by more established artists. As for the Gothic district, start at Carrer Ataulf (with Carrer Templars) and then head into Carrer Milans. This neighbourhood near to El Raval and Paral·lel has lots of hidden gems packed with charm and character, off the beaten track. Here are five of our favourites.
1. Cutting edge dance at Sala Hiroshima Hiroshima's artistic focus is on dance, new dramaturgy, contemporary circus, live music and multidisciplinary experiences, contrasting disciplines for open-minded audiences. It is also space for leadingedge hybrid creative research. Their agenda has a powerful focus on emerging artists, as well as working with established artists who explore new languages and technology applied to the stage. 2. Craft beers at Abirradero In a city that is rapidly embracing the craft beer revolution, we’ve come across one brewpub that really stands out from the crowd. With 40 separate beer taps, this is the brewpub with one of the most taps in Europe. What’s more, over 20 of these taps offer their own beers from the brewery downstairs. It is also a restaurant, serving excellent tapas and creative dishes which all include at least one ingredient from the brewery such as malt, hops, or even the beer itself. FEATURES 3. Tango and improv comedy at Tinta Roja This Argentinean cocktail bar has become somewhat of a legend in Barcelona for its irrepressible tango nights. Live bands roll out popular Latin rhythms whilst the dancefloor moves to its sultry beats. The venue’s décor is elaborately carnivalesque, with gaudy paintings and kitch objects d’art that create an ambience of sheer fun. 4. Tapas in Carrer Blai This pedestrian street is lined with quirky bars that offer an exquisite selection of tapas and pinxos. These creations are loaded onto a piece of bread, with cheese, meat and fish varieties to create bite sized gastronomic experiences. Some of these restaurants are rather small, it may be wise to go earlier so you can find a place to sit. Popular tapas bars include Blai 9, La Tasqueria de Blai (Blai, 17), and Koska Taverna (Blai, 8).
5. Cocktails at La Federica The chic design of this ultra-modern hangout offers a throw-back to 70’s San Francisco and is a world away from the average Barcelona drinking hole. Its distinctly retro interior and edgy artwork is enough to warrant a stop off here, but more than anything, the cocktails are a talking point. Quite possibly the best mojitos in the city and some of the friendliest staff in town. This fashionable spot also doubles as a gay bar and is helping open up new pastures for the LGBT community. As the second most mountainous country in Europe, Spain has some excellent ski resorts. Whether it’s skiing, snowboarding, big-foot or sledging, you can enjoy it all at these easily accessible spots near Barcelona.
VALL DE NURIA
LA MOLINA
The valley of Vall de Nuria comes down from the crest of the Pyrenees in the province of Girona. This is a haven that you can escape to all year round, and in winter it is more than equipped for a great skiing holiday. It has a total of 11 alpine ski slopes: 3 green, 3 blue, 3 red and 2 black. Although there is no road access to the valley it’s easy to reach by train, so is perfect for a day trip. It has great facilities for beginners, pros and families, including a ski school, equipment hire, snow parks and medical services.
This popular ski destination near Barcelona is reputed to be the oldest resort in Spain, and is the closest to Barcelona. It is divided into 4 different ski areas, with a total of 53 pistes of different levels from green to black and 16 lifts. There is a self-timing kilometre speed run for those up to the challenge, and any boarder who has mastered the “staying upright” technique can show of their skills and tricks at the Snow Park 100m superpipe. Much entertainment is also guaranteed for the onlookers. Other activities on offer include alpine skiing, husky sledging and circuit sledging.
Non-skiers can enjoy the snow with activities like cross country skiing, sledging and snowshoe outings. Get the train from Barcelona Sants to Ribes de Freser, then rack rail (cremallera) to the slopes of Vall de Nuria. You can also get there by bus. www.valldenuria.com 26

MASELLA The ski resort of Masella, near La Molina has 64 pistes covering 74km of slopes. These include 9 green supereasy slopes, 9 black slopes for the brave and foolish, and the rest are inbetween. There are also several bars by the slopes where you can get freshly made sandwiches and quick snacks to maximise your ski time! Thirteen of the pistes are illuminated at night, which allows the breathtaking experience of skiing under the stars. They are connected by 7 ski lifts. Masella has the most extensive night skiing facilities in the Pyrenees, and separate ski passes are available for those who wish to turn up later in the day. www.masella.com

Prices generally start from 20â‚Ź/day to rent skis, poles and boots for adults, and 26â‚Ź for snowboarders.
2. Learn the basics at the ski school
All these resorts have a ski and snowboard school which offers everything from one-off private classes to larger group classes spread over several days.
3. Lockers
Secure lockers are available where you can leave your belongings. These can also be rented for the season, for the convenience of regular skiers.
4. Kids Area
If you're planning an outing with the little ones, check out the fun areas for kids, which include mini-snow parks and other activities.
5. Come prepared!
Make sure you bring all the ski essentials, such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and a warm woolly hat. Everything can be bought on site, but it's much more expensive. 27

SANTA EULÀLIA Traditional
Is it fair to wonder whether Barcelona has two patron saints to squeeze yet another holiday into the annual agenda? Back in the 3rd century AD Eulàlia was brutally murdered and martyred as a young child for not refuting her religion. Her statue looks down from the top of Barcelona Cathedral onto the square, which hosts many activities. A myriad of shows, dances and folkloric performances take place during these festive days. Highlights include the human castles in Plaça St Jaume who reach for the skies on Sunday afternoon. Also on Sunday, the traditional gegants of Ciutat Vella, large sculptures that tower above the shoulders of their bearers, take a twirl in Plaça Reial.
