Mirador torre Glòries

MORE THAN JUST A 360° OBSERVATION DECK

Mirador torre Glòries is the new cultural experience in Barcelona. A different and not-to-be-missed visit for enjoying the best 360° views of the city and much more because Mirador torre Glòries isn’t just another observation deck. It is a surprising experience, full of intriguing ways to discover Barcelona and where you can take in the spectacular panorama from a height of 125 metres, in one of the most photographed buildings in the city. It is a very special place in the new “centre of Barcelona”, where the city’s three main streets converge: Meridiana, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes and Diagonal.

Mirador torre Glòries is a vantage point that revolutionises the way of observing Barcelona. It is a must-do experience for discovering the city’s secrets, getting to know it and once the visit is over, enjoying and feeling it like never before.

A NEW CONNECTION WITH ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC BUILDINGS ON BARCELONA’S SKYLINE

Since it was opened, Torre Glòries, designed by Jean Nouvel, has become an icon of Barcelona. An emblematic tower that is part of the city’s skyline, which, thanks to Mirador torre Glòries, has only recently been opened to the public.

The visit to Mirador torre Glòries begins in an unusual way, underground. There awaits Hyperview Barcelona, an extraordinary place, an observation deck... without windows. It is an exhibition space that reveals aspects of the city that often pass unnoticed, unique details that we often look at but don’t see.

A forest of delicate paper sculptures created by artist Joan Sallas lets us explore the city through its non-human inhabitants, its London

plane trees, fin whales and the peregrine falcons of Sagrada Família. There is also a gigantic screen on which real-time data are projected to reveal Barcelona at that precise moment: various data capture points feed their numbers live, creating a real-time view of the city. The entire space is enveloped in selfgenerating music thanks to the installation by Maria Arnal and John Talabot.

AN EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR CONTEMPLATING BARCELONA FROM THE CLOUDS

After this journey underground, the visit continues on the tower’s 30th floor, at a height of 125 metres. From there, the city is formidable: emblematic buildings and monuments, streets full of history, its “green lungs”, its distinguished neighbour Sagrada Família, the Mediterranean Sea as a backdrop... It is an enchanting observation deck. One that offers exclusive 360° views of Barcelona and beyond. However, there’s more, and to see it, all you have to do is tilt your head back and look up.

The highest point of the tower is dominated

THE BEST 360° VIEWS OF THE CITY

by Tomás Saraceno’s Cloud Cities Barcelona sculpture. This amazing work of art, suspended in the centre of the dome, is a 6-kilometre cobweb of tensioned cables that defies verticality. That’s not all, if you want to, you can climb and crawl through it and enjoy privileged views of the city from an even greater height of 130 metres. A unique experience that invites you to reflect and enjoy the visit even more.

FEEL THE BEAT OF BARCELONA!

Mirador torre Glòries is much more than an observation deck. It is a special and innovative place that will amaze you for its daring and for believing in a different kind of observation point that reveals, explores and seduces in equal measure. It is a journey through Barcelona that will change how you look and understand the city. Are you ready to discover the infinite facets of the city and feel its beat in real time?

FESTA MAJOR DE GRÀCIA

Traditional

Known as the Festa Major de Gràcia, this is one of the most important events of the year in Gràcia, and one of the most anticipated by the inhabitants of the neighbourhood itself. The main attraction and focus of attention is the show in the streets where the streets and squares are all decorated thematically with huge and beautiful murals and handicrafts.

FESTA MAJOR DE SANTS

The Sants festival isn’t quite as well known as other festivities but it is very similar to the Gràcia festival, and it takes place in the Sants neighbourhood. Look out for gegants (giant figures controlled by people), castellers (human towers) and diables (people dressed as devils who set off fireworks)!

Sants Neighbourhood

The festival of Mercè, the patron saint of Barcelona is celebrated in squares and streets throughout the city. This short but intense festival will bring diverse cultural activities for all ages. You can expect a huge correfoc fire run, processions for gegants, human towers, concerts and dancing from around Catalonia.

THE ESSENTIAL SUMMER PARTY:

FESTA MAJOR DE GRÀCIA

Over a million people are expected join the fun that descends on the Gràcia neighbourhood from the 15th-21st August, for one of Barcelona's biggest and most colourful annual events. More than twenty streets and squares are transformed into magical outdoor venues for 600+ different performances and activities, with a mind-boggling agenda that includes Catalan traditions, plenty of live music and spectacular street art. Children can enjoy workshops, puppet shows and interactive entertainment. The community element remains strong; vermouth tastings attract an older crowd, who also set up tables for their own meals in the street, and dance sultry boleros and rumbas until late.

COLOURFUL STREET DECORATIONS, VIBRANT TRADITIONS AND ROCKIN' LIVE MUSIC IN GRÀCIA

Festa is a way of life in Spain. The mild climate and community orientated lifestyle lend themselves to local celebrations throughout the year. Every town in Catalonia and every district of Barcelona organise their own festa major- the big annual festival. Locals spend

all year preparing for this spectacular event in Gràcia. The first impression when stepping into the streets can only be astonishment at the care, attention and creativity that is lovingly poured into its many decorations. Artwork is suspended along the length and breadth of the streets, huge papier maché models appear everywhere, recycled materials take on a new lease of life as robots, jellyfish and hedgehogs, and balconies are awash with flowers. Each participating street competes for the coveted awards in different categories, with streets like Verdi and Tordera consistently scooping a prize. Some of the most entertaining themes in recent years have included futuristic walkways with giant polystyrene robots, underwater coves with seaweed and shells dangling from above, and an eccentric PacMan game.

As the evening unfolds it’s all about the music, with stages hosting a varied programme of live bands and DJs. The busiest stages in previous

34 BARCELONA CONNECT

years have been in Plaça Revolució, Plaça del Sol and Plaça de la Virreina, with acts ranging from Catalan indie rock to Latino ensembles and DJs feeding rumbas, rockabilly and reggae to an up-for-it crowd. Check online for the full line-up and agenda.

Traditional events are definitely not to be missed. The unmistakably pagan correfoc- “fire-run” is a highlight, with diables, or devils dancing through the streets brandishing fireworks that spin around a long pole, showering sparks in all directions. Stand well back if you're not wearing long sleeves. Tribal drumming accompanies the parade as it winds its way through the streets. Look out for the fire-breathing dragons that take part in the action. Gràcia’s own dragon, called “Gaudiamos”, is a large replica of the famous Gaudí dragon statue found in the ornamental staircase of the Park Güell. If you or a friend have a balcony overlooking the correfoc route, start the night there.

Human castles reach up to the skies in Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia. A triumph of teamwork and trust, each human castle is created by intrepid teams who climb to stand on each other’s shoulders, topped by a brave little child who reaches the top, momentarily waves, and scrambles back down. Some of the most impressive towers created to date have been eight and even nine storeys high. Traditional pipe music begins when the team leader considers the tower base to be stable, and they continue to build upwards.

If you’re in Barcelona during the Gràcia festival consider yourself lucky and dive right in. festamajordegracia.cat

Home of Modernism

The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.
