Protective helmets are compulsory for cyclists under the age of 16. Cyclists must use the cycle lanes; if there isn’t one, stay in the lane closest to the pavement. Using the bus lane is not permitted. Bikes can only ride on pavements that are wider than 5 metres.

Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sound carries up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Make sure doors and windows are locked when you leave the apartment to prevent theft. Don't leave money or valuables in your room. Use a safe deposit box.

Protect your personal belongings, especially in crowded areas such as the city centre, La Rambla, public transport and the beach. 1. PASSEIG DE GRÀCIA If you are drawn to classic and chic labels, then head straight to Passeig de Gràcia. This luxurious boulevard boasts beautiful buildings and décor, including the magnificent Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. Many of the most prestigious fashion shops and brands in Barcelona are located here, including Bulgari, Gucci, Hermès, Prada, Emporio Armani, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. If you are on a budget, or don’t want to splash out as far as a pair of Jimmy Choo stilettos, then check out the high-street stores such as Zara, Mango and H&M with their aspirational knock-offs.

2. BORN This trendy cultural hub is an up-andcoming fashion district with plenty of independent boutiques that specialise in one-off items and contemporary fashion. Many of the best shops are in Carrer Rec, Carrer dels Flassaders, and in the small streets off Rambla del Born.

3. RAVAL If you are bringing goods out of the EU, ask for a Tax Free Cheque in the shop.

The quirky neighbourhood of El Raval has an abundance of vintage clothes stores, located mainly on Carrer Tallers and Carrer de la Riera Baixa. You'll find everything from faux fur, camouflage jackets, shoes and bags from whatever decade floats your boat.

This boulevard crosses the Modernist Eixample district and leads from Plaça de Catalunya to Diagonal. One of the trendiest shopping streets in Barcelona, international brands and exquisite local designers present their latest offerings in its small boutiques and larger stores.

Just below Plaça Catalunya you'll find this pedestrian street which brims with top high street stores such as El Corte Inglés, Zara and Cortefiel. You'll also find several shoe shops and sparkles from Swarovski.

5. GRÀCIA Once an independent village, Gràcia still retains a strong sense of its own identity; alternative, slightly bohemian, and very Catalan. Gràcia provides the classic high street stores found throughout Barcelona, as well as more arty, funky and independent boutiques. It is popular with students and has lots of squares lined with bars and terraces.

The visit to Mirador torre Glòries begins in an unusual way, underground. There awaits Hyperview Barcelona, an extraordinary place, an observation deck... without windows. It is an exhibition space that reveals aspects of the city that often pass unnoticed, unique details that we often look at but don’t see. A forest of delicate paper sculptures created by artist Joan Sallas lets us explore the

city through its non-human inhabitants, its London plane trees, fin whales and the peregrine falcons of Sagrada Família. Barcelona sculpture. This amazing work of art, suspended in the centre of the dome, is a 6-kilometre cobweb of tensioned cables that defies verticality. After this journey underground, the visit continues on the tower’s 30th floor, at a height of 125 metres. CASA VICENS GAUDÍ Casa Vicens Gaudí is the first masterpiece by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926). The young and talented Gaudí constructed this house in the Gràcia neighbourhood between 1883 and 1885 for the Vicens family. It is recognised as a wonderful work of art combining diverse influences, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 2005.

The tour of Casa Vicens begins in the cosy garden, where you can taste the gastronomic delights of its cafeteria. It's from the patio that you'll discover the true facade of the house, facing towards the garden, which originally had a large waterfall and a ARCHITECTURE chapel dedicated to Santa Rita. MADE BY Unfortunately, these no longer NATURE exist as the land was claimed by urban development in the sought after Gràcia neighbourhood.

A great variety of artistic techniques are present in this building. There is an intensive use of ceramics, such as the exterior tiles with carnation prints, a flower that Gaudí found on the site and incorporated as a key decorative element of this building. You can also see magnificent wrought iron work and the intense use of the sgraffito pottery technique in all the rooms which have plant motifs. However, the greatest surprise is perhaps the use of paper. Gaudí and 22

ESCALIVADA

CALÇOTS

Freshly made escalivada is a local specialty which melts in the mouth. It is usually served as a tapa, or to accompany grilled meat dishes. It is made from smoke-grilled peppers, eggplant and onions which are mixed with olive oil and garlic and left to marinate and soak up the flavours. It is sometimes topped with anchovies and accompanied by crispy pa amb tomàquet, bread rubbed with fresh tomato and a drizzle of good quality olive oil. Delicious!

If you’re visiting Barcelona this spring we recommend you try a unique and popular seasonal specialty: calçots. These long spring onions have a mild leek-like flavour, and are served with a delicious romesco sauce, packed with the fresh flavours of tomatoes, peppers, garlic, almonds, bread, and extra virgin olive oil. VALL DE NURIA

LA MOLINA

The valley of Vall de Nuria comes down from the crest of the Pyrenees in the province of Girona. This is a haven that you can escape to all year round, and in winter it is more than equipped for a great skiing holiday. It has a total of 11 alpine ski slopes: 3 green, 3 blue, 3 red and 2 black. Although there is no road access to the valley it’s easy to reach by train, so is perfect for a day trip. It has great facilities for beginners, pros and families, including a ski school, equipment hire, snow parks and medical services.

This popular ski destination near Barcelona is reputed to be the oldest resort in Spain, and is the closest to Barcelona. It is divided into 4 different ski areas, with a total of 53 pistes of different levels from green to black and 16 lifts. There is a self-timing kilometre speed run for those up to the challenge, and any boarder who has mastered the “staying upright” technique can show off their skills and tricks at the Snow Park 100m superpipe. Much entertainment is also guaranteed for the onlookers. Other activities on offer include alpine skiing, husky sledging and circuit sledging.

Non-skiers can enjoy the snow with activities like cross country skiing, sledging and snowshoe outings. Get the train from Barcelona Sants to Ribes de Freser, then rack rail (cremallera) to the slopes of Vall de Nuria. You can also get there by bus. www.valldenuria.com 26

Both commissioned by wealthy families at the beginning of the 20th century, these magnificent buildings showcase the creativity of Gaudí. Open 7 days a week, there is no excuse for skipping this stop. Visit inside, or admire the façades. (Casa Batlló: Passeig de Gràcia, 43; Casa Milà: Provença, 261-265). 20:30-21:00 PLAÇA ESPANYA: THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART OF CATALUNYA AND THE MAGIC FOUNTAIN One of the most spectacular views of Barcelona is offered by the boulevard leading from Plaça Espanya to the National Museum of Art of Catalunya. Numerous fountains and waterfalls embellish the walk, whilst the top of this walk offers great views of the square below. 29

EXPLORE MONTJUÏC The hill above Barcelona’s port overlooks the city; its lovely outdoor parks are an oasis of natural beauty, and it is home to grand architecture, museums and galleries. Montjuïc was a focal venue for Barcelona’s 1992 Olympic Games. Its name may have Catalan origins, with juic indicating a former Jewish settlement. Others argue it may have derived from the Latin Mont Jovis, named after the Roman God, Jupiter. It was used by Franco’s regime as an execution ground for political prisoners during the Civil War, and has been transformed into an attractive centre for sports and culture.

Fundació Joan Miró

Beautiful inside and out, this impressive museum has an extravagant exterior with amazing artwork to match. Situated at the foot of Montjuïc, it overlooks the former bullring which is now Las Arenas shopping centre. The gallery has an extensive range of art from sculptures to paintings, engravings, drawings and photography. Its emphasis is on Catalan art and its works date from the Romanesque period up until the 20th century.

Discover the art works by the Catalan artist, Joan Miró (1893-1983), who was born in Barcelona. He was renowned for his abstract surrealist painting, sculpture and ceramics.

Magic Fountains The fountains of the Palau Nacional look normal enough during the day, but at night the magic begins. A spectacular sound and light show turns the fountains into a chorus of water, colour and music which lights up the night sky with an impressive display. Shows take place all year round, and at 20:00 and 20:30 every Thursday, Friday and Saturday in March and at 21:00 and 21:30 in April. 30
