Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sound carries up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Make sure doors and windows are locked when you leave the apartment to prevent theft. Don't leave money or valuables in your room. Use a safe deposit box.

1. PASSEIG DE GRÀCIA If you are drawn to classic and chic labels, then head straight to Passeig de Gràcia. This luxurious boulevard boasts beautiful buildings and décor, including the magnificent Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. Many of the most prestigious fashion shops and brands in Barcelona are located here, including Bulgari, Gucci, Hermès, Prada, Emporio Armani, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. If you are on a budget, or don’t want to splash out as far as a pair of Jimmy Choo stilettos, then check out the high-street stores such as Zara, Mango and H&M with their aspirational knock-offs.

2. BORN This trendy cultural hub is an up-andcoming fashion district with plenty of independent boutiques that specialise in one-off items and contemporary fashion. Many of the best shops are in Carrer Rec, Carrer dels Flassaders, and in the small streets off Rambla del Born.

3. RAVAL If you are bringing goods out of the EU, ask for a Tax Free Cheque in the shop.

The quirky neighbourhood of El Raval has an abundance of vintage clothes stores, located mainly on Carrer Tallers and Carrer de la Riera Baixa. You'll find everything from faux fur, camouflage jackets, shoes and bags from whatever decade floats your boat.

This boulevard crosses the Modernist Eixample district and leads from Plaça de Catalunya to Diagonal. One of the trendiest shopping streets in Barcelona, international brands and exquisite local designers present their latest offerings in its small boutiques and larger stores.

More than 140 shops offer the best brands in clothing, accessories and lifestyle products at incredible discounts. Discover this season’s trends before anyone else with new arrivals. Daily coach services depart from Passeig de Gràcia, 6 (see map) taking you directly to this luxury shopping centre in 50 minutes. It is open daily from 10:00-21:00.

5. GRÀCIA Once an independent village, Gràcia still retains a strong sense of its own identity; alternative, slightly bohemian, and very Catalan. Gràcia provides the classic high street stores found throughout Barcelona, as well as more arty, funky and independent boutiques. It is popular with students and has lots of squares lined with bars and terraces.

A high stone fortress marked the boundaries of the Roman city of Barcino and fragments of these mighty structures can still be seen around the Cathedral and Gothic district, such as this intriguing corner of Plaça Traginers. Larger sections of the Roman walls can also be found along the nearby Baixada de Viladecols. If you look carefully to the right of the Cathedral you will see fragments along the side of Carrer dels Comtes which leads towards Plaça Sant Jaume.

The monumental Cemetery of Poblenou is a fascinating tribute to Catalan history and is recognised for its outstanding funerary architecture which includes neoclassical art and Egyptian elements from the beginning of the 19th century. It was rebuilt in 1819. One of its most notable elements is the grave of Joseph Llaudet, with the famous “Kiss of Death” sculpture by Jaume Barba. MEDIEVAL BARCELONA

The Medieval Period took place between the 5th and the 15th century, and was one of the most defining eras in Barcelona’s history. It was in this period that Barcelona found its new name as the Ciudad Condal, a nickname that has stuck ever since. The best way to immerse yourself in medieval Barcelona is by walking through the Gothic Quarter and admiring its beautiful architecture and hidden nooks and crannies. Barcelona Cathedral was built between the 13th and 15th century and is one of the city’s most significant medieval buildings. Its exterior was constructed in the 20th century in a neogothic style. It was precisely this remodelling that encouraged the city council to undertake a complete face-lift of the old town and revamp the Gothic Quarter in its signature gothic style. Plaça de la Seu

The old Hospital de la Santa Creu was was built at the start of the 15th century with the intention of merging six of the city’s smaller hospitals together, after plague and famine devastated the city. Today you can find the national Library of Catalonia on the top floor, and the building itself is considered one of the city’s best examples of Catalan gothic architecture. Carrer del’Hospital, 56

Santa Maria del Pi was constructed in gothic Catalan style in the 14th century. Several legends explain its name. One says that it comes from the image of a virgin that appeared on the trunk of a pine tree. A pine was thus planted outside the main door of the basilica, and remained there until the 19th century. Carrer Montcada was one of the most important streets for the medieval nobility of Barcelona who built their renaissance and baroque palaces nearby. Be sure to peep into any of the open courtyards. One of the most impressive medieval buildings that has been conserved to this day belonged to the Castellet family, and is now home to the Picasso Museum. 15

VISIT BARCELONA IN A DAY Barcelona’s culture and gastronomy make this an ideal weekend destination, with so much to discover and experience. However, this can also generate the pressure of seeing as much as possible within a couple of days. It can be a daunting task, but worry not as this itinerary will allow you to see the main attractions in one day, leaving the rest of your time free for enjoying the tapas. Be warned however: this is an intensive day tour! 9:00 BREAKFAST IN GRÀCIA Take the metro to Fontana and make your way to Plaça del Sol to enjoy breakfast in one of the cafés that line this emblematic square. Enjoy a walk through the Gràcia neighbourhood, admiring its squares and quirky boutiques until you get to Joanic metro. Take a 15 minute walk or couple of metro stops to Sant Pau Dos de Maig. 10:30 ADMIRE THE MODERNIST AREA OF HOSPITAL SANT PAU We’re on a tight schedule, so we’re not going 20

in. But take your time to notice the intricate structure of this magnificent building by the great architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. And now it's time to stroll down Avinguda Gaudí to admire La Sagrada Família. 11:30 SAGRADA FAMÍLIA Barcelona’s most famous landmark was designed by Antoni Gaudí. It has been under construction from 1882, and should be completed in 2026. Open to visitors, this structure is as remarkable inside as it is outside. Buying tickets in advance is recommended as waiting times can get very long, even in winter. 13:30 LUNCH AT BARCELONA’S MOST FAMOUS MARKET, LA BOQUERIA A feast for the eyes as much as for the stomach, this stop will be a highlight for foodies. A quick walk around the market first is ideal to avoid filling up at the first stalls, only to see something else you would have loved to eat later. There are options for every budget and every dietary requirement, and whether you choose to sit in

one of the cafés or walk and eat, everything on offer is fresh and delicious. 15:30 LAS RAMBLAS AND PLAÇA REIAL Walking down Barcelona’s most famous street is of course a must. Filled with street vendors, artists, and restaurants, there is plenty to see here. Stroll at your leisure, and have a rest in Plaça Reial while enjoying one of the most beautiful squares of the city. 16:30-17:00 COFFEE ON THE SEA FRONT A quick 15 minute walk to the bottom of Las Ramblas will take you to Port Vell. Numerous bars and cafes line the beach promenade, offering the perfect place to enjoy the calm of the sea while sipping a warm cup of coffee. 18:00 CASA BATLLÓ AND CASA MILÀ Hop back on the metro to Passeig de Gràcia to see two houses designed by our favourite architect Antoni Gaudí. Five minutes’ walk from each other, the houses’ shapes are inspired by myth and nature.

Both commissioned by wealthy families at the beginning of the 20th century, these magnificent buildings showcase the creativity of Gaudí. Open 7 days a week, there is no excuse for skipping this stop. Visit inside, or admire the façades. (Casa Batlló: Passeig de Gràcia, 43; Casa Milà: Provença, 261-265). 20:30-21:00 PLAÇA ESPANYA: THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART OF CATALUNYA AND THE MAGIC FOUNTAIN One of the most spectacular views of Barcelona is offered by the boulevard leading from Plaça Espanya to the National Museum of Art of Catalunya. Numerous fountains and waterfalls embellish the walk, whilst the top of this walk offers great views of the square below. 21

MONTSERRAT Attracted by the idea of a fun and adventurous day out? Then why not head to Montserrat mountain, located just 50km from Barcelona, and famous for its Benedictine monastery, breathtaking views and excellent hiking trails. DISCOVER MONTSERRAT The first thing you'll notice on arrival at the foot of Montserrat mountain is its unusual rounded rock formations. If you look closely, its shapes appear to resemble faces, mushrooms and other distinctive forms that have earned different parts of the mountain its various nicknames. MONTSERRAT MONASTERY One of the most influential places of worship in Catalonia, it remains an important centre that is currently home to eighty Benedictine monks. Its origins date back to 888 CE when it was the simple hermitage of Santa María. It became an independent abbey in 1409 and its wealthy benefactors allowed the development of magnificent interiors and religious art works. The famous "black Madonna" statue can be visited here. 24

MUSEUM & GALLERY As their private collection of art grew, it became evident that a larger space was needed to display it for the public. The museum building was constructed by the Modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch in 1929.
