INFO

In your apartment

· · ·

Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sounds carry up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Be aware that heels on tiles or parquet floor make a loud click which can usually be heard in the apartment below.

At the beach

· ·

Don’t use any soap or shampoo at the showers by the beach. It pollutes the water, and you can be fined. Respect the coloured flags. Green means the sea is calm, yellow indicates medium hazard such as slight currents or jellyfish, and a red flag warns you not to enter the water.

BIKE TOURS

SPANISH GUITAR Enjoy classical Spanish guitar concerts every week at Santa María del Pi, just off La Rambla, and Sant Jaume church on C/ Ferran.

This is an extremely bike-friendly city, with kilometres of cycle lanes alongside most of the main roads. There are plenty of bike rental shops such as Green Bikes on C/ Ample 53 in the Gothic Quarter who charge just 2€/ hour or 10€/ 24 hours. They also offer tours and a bike repair service.

DISCOUNT CLUBBING Most of the city's nightclubs have Facebook guest lists where you can sign up for free or discounted entry. If you're going out along the seafront to clubs such as CDLC, Catwalk Club and Opium Barcelona, look out for people flyering nearby or flyers in the pre-club bars.

CANALETES FOUNTAIN... YOUR RETURN TICKET TO BCN According to local legend, taking a few sips from this drinking fountain at the top of La Rambla will bring you back to Barcelona. It also marks the spot where legions of FC Barcelona fans gather to celebrate their triumphs. The fountain dates back to the 19th century, and is a handy spot for topping up your water bottle or washing the raspberries you might have bought from the nearby Boqueria market.

TICKETS FOR PARK GÜELL & GAUDÍ'S MONUMENTS Access to the ornamental area of Park Güell, with the iconic lizard statue, undulating mosaic pavillion and spectacular caverns has been limited to ticket holders since 2014. You're advised to buy your ticket online in advance as there are daily visitor restrictions – www.parkguell.cat. You can also beat the queue by booking online for other top attractions such as La Sagrada Família and La Pedrera.

LOCAL REFRESHMENTS: VERMOUTH Although traditionally used for medical purposes, Vermouth’s true claim to fame is as an aperitif. Historically there were two types – sweet and dry. Its reputation as an older person's drink has been firmly refuted in Barcelona, where it has recently made a comeback and is served on the rocks in many trendy bars such as Colibri (Riera Alta 33, Raval), Bormuth (Plaça Comercial 1, Born) and Jai-Ca (Ginebra 13, Barceloneta.) 12

Exploring the Gothic Quarter: Carrer d’Avinyó Just off La Rambla, you’ll find one of Barcelona’s oldest Medieval streets. Emily Dillistone introduces this hotspot for alternative shops, some lovely tapas bars, and plenty more hidden gems for you to discover.

Art and transgression A brothel at number 44 was said to have inspired Picasso’s large oil painting, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. This image of five naked ladies was a precursor to the Modernist and Cubist style, with its angular faces and fractured body shapes. It raised much controversy amongst artistic circles as well as the public, even drawing criticism from contemporaries such as Matisse and Braque.

Vintage galore Dive into the gorgeous vintage kilo store called Flamingos Club with a bar at the back, at no. 24. It’s hard to decide which is more exciting – the happy hour that lasts until 10pm or its staff wearing roller skates. The vintage shop at no. 12 sells 50s style dresses with polka dots and classic cuts, whilst Wasabi at no. 27 has an enticing window display and a treasure trove of one-off items inside. La Veintinueve at no. 29 sells 50s dresses, swimsuits and Mary Jane shoes.

SIGHTSEEING Chic restaurants El Gran Café is perhaps the fanciest independent restaurant on this street. They organise live piano nights and cater to a slightly older clientele than the most of the other bars and cafés in the Gothic Quarter. Agüelo 013 at no. 37 serve tapas large enough to be full-sized meals. Its menu features a range of Spanish, Catalan, and international dishes. A personal favourite is the chorizo paired with their Rioja, La Montesa.

Fashion and accessories At no. 7 you’ll find La Manual Alpargatera, a shop selling espadrille-style shoes in just about any colour and pattern you can imagine. If you’re looking for something more exotic, check out Totem at no. 28 which has a variety of Native American crafts from leather bracelets to oversize necklaces. A mediumsized leather bag will cost around 60€. For the weird and wonderful, take a trip to Pygmees at no. 48, which stocks items that could have been taken out of a 90s futuristic film; think Desigual but two steps further down the weird scale.

STEP INTO THE WORLD OF

IBERIAN JAMÓN S

panish gastronomy reserves a special place for its fine ham, and many a tapa of Jamón Iberico accompanied by a cold caña is enjoyed from corner to corner of the peninsula by locals and tourists alike. Barcelona’s Jamón Experience on La Rambla is an entertaining and interactive way to learn about the origins, processes and traditions associated with this popular Spanish delicacy. Lasting around an hour in total, the experience includes an audiovisual tour and the opportunity to sample different types of ham. THE JAMÓN TOUR & MUSEUM The experience starts off with an audiovisual tour spread over eight rooms. With the help of 3D visuals, models and audio effects, the tour explains the journey of ham from the Iberian pigs in the field to the final product on the plate, and the techniques used to create the diverse flavours of cured ham. This part of the tour is insightful and educational; detailed explanations allow you to appreciate the significant amount of time and energy that goes into producing each piece of Jamón Iberico. THE TASTING EXPERIENCE Undoubtedly the most exciting part for most, the ham tasting is accompanied by a choice of beer, cava, wine or water. A glass of cava is especially recommended as it’s the best drink for refreshing taste buds inbetween trying the

different types of ham… and who are we to argue with any excuse for a delicious glass of fizz? The tasting is led by a ham expert who gives insightful explanations about the six hams sampled. The ham selection ranges from the standard ‘Reserva’ to richer ‘Ibericos’ from Salamanca, Extremadura, Cordoba and Huelva. Hams are tasted in an order that gradually increases the fullness of flavour, leading up to the richest and most intense, the Huelva Iberico. The tasting takes place in a comfortable space overlooking La Rambla. Relaxed and intimate, the experience is unique and ideal for groups of all sizes, from families and friends to business group functions. SOUVENIRS The final stage of the Jamón journey is the shop on the ground floor, which is also open to the public. The shop stocks the range of hams included in the tasting experience, so you can share your favourites with friends back home. It also stocks culinary books, other Spanish products and a good range of wine and cava which accompany the ham especially well. La Rambla 88-94 jamonexperience.com Holly Ogdon & Robyn Hathaway

DISCOVER MONTSERRAT

MUSEUM & GALLERY

The first thing you'll notice on arrival at the foot of Montserrat mountain is its unusual rounded rock formations. If you look closely, its shapes appear to resemble faces, mushrooms and other distinctive forms that have earned different parts of the mountain its various nicknames

As their private collection of art grew, it became evident that a larger space was needed to display it for the public. The museum building was constructed by the Modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch in 1929. It now contains over 1,300 pieces ranging from Egyptian icons in the Archaeology of the Biblical East collection, to classical paintings by El Greco and Caravaggio, and modern masterpieces by Chagall, Miró, Dalí and Picasso.

MONTSERRAT MONASTERY One of the most influential places of worship in Catalunya, it remains an important centre that is currently home to 80 Benedictine monks. Its origins date back to 888 CE when it was the simple hermitage of Santa María. It became an independent abbey in 1409 and its wealthy benefactors allowed the development of magnificent interiors and religious art works. The famous "black Madonna" statue can be visited here. 26

CATALAN TRADITIONS AT LA MERCÈ FESTIVAL

Barcelona's largest week-long street party, La Mercè festival from the 22nd-25th Sept will give you a taste of all the folkloric traditions that add a touch of magic to life in Catalonia. Celebration, fun and community spirit all rolled into one!

Correfoc Spectacular, exhilarating and unmistakably pagan, the “fire-run” is a highlight of any traditional Catalan fiesta. Diables, or devils, dance through the streets brandishing fireworks that spin around a long pole, showering sparks in all directions. Stand well back if you're not wearing long sleeves. Passionate drumming accompanies the performance as it winds its way through the streets. Castellers A triumph of teamwork and trust, each human castle is created by intrepid teams who climb to stand on each other’s shoulders, topped by a brave little child who reaches the top, momentarily waves and scrambles back down. Some of the most impressive towers created to date have been eight and even nine storeys high. Traditional pipe music begins when the tower base is considered stable. Gegants & Capgrossos Each district of Barcelona and most Catalan towns have their own “giants” and “bigheads”. The giants are made with a tall hollow structure carried on someone’s shoulders and topped with a papier-mâché head whose features give 36

each character a unique identity. Both the gegants and capgrossos take part in parades and shine in their own a solo moment as they dance around each other. Bestiari Representations of real and mythical animals can also be found in the traditional Festa Major dances and processions. Barcelona’s creatures include the lion “El Lleó”, the regal eagle “Àgila de Barcelona”, and the “Drac de Barcelona” dragon. Several Barcelona districts have their own dragon, such as the quirky “Gaudiamos” in Gràcia, who resembles Gaudí’s iconic dragon statue in Park Güell.

The story tells of Prince Tamino, who is attacked by a snake and rescued by three ladies-in-waiting from the court of the mysterious Queen of the Night. This powerful opera is filled with symbolism and allusions to freemasonry.

7-23 Oct Macbeth – Giuseppe Verdi When mysterious witches foretell that Macbeth will become King of Scotland a chain of tragic events is set in motion. Whilst he feels humbled by what seems like an impossible suggestion, his wife the nefarious Lady Macbeth is stirred into ambitious scheming and demands that he takes irreversible action. This was Verdi’s first work based on a Shakespeare play.

editerranean sunlight spills through large glass windows onto silver-flecked tables framed by a purple velvet curtain and elegant bookshelf. High tables for on-the-go lunches for two face a marble-topped bar with high stools. Premium brand liquors whisper anticipation of evening cocktails. A cosy round table is surrounded by three wicker chairs. Comfort, elegance and style permeate each corner with an easy grace.

Good taste is also very much on the menu at Malgam. Fresh locally sourced market ingredients are creatively combined in this delicious Mediterranean cuisine with touches of international fusion. Three lunch menu formats give clients a choice of dishes. If you’re “in a hurry,” then go for the main dish with a drink, some bread, and a desert or coffee. There’s also “the classic,” which includes a half-portion dish, and “go on, spoil me,” with two half-portion dishes. With dishes such as duck ravioli, and chargrilled squid, it’s easy to give into that temptation. These half-portions, or “platillos”, reflect the Malgam concept of sharing not just the good company but also the food. Tapas with a twist include Andalusian style squid with Japanese “yuzu” mayonnaise, guacamole with langostine ceviche, and exquisite patatas bravas.

Located in the stylish Eixample district, Malgam is one of the restaurants that sets the standard around here.

An original dish of gratinated salt cod is accompanied by vegetables and plum sauce. Meats are grilled on volcanic rock and accompanied by home-made chips, sauces, and grilled vegetables. Groups are well looked after, with cosy spaces accommodating up to 12 and 30 people, or even 50 people. From 23:30 the restaurant takes on a lounge atmosphere, with great cocktails and often a DJ until 3:00. Evenings get busy, especially weekends, so make sure you call to reserve.
