An Art Nouveau urban expansion
L’Eixample
When nineteenth century Barcelona expanded beyond the walled city, creating roads that connected up nearby villages such as Gràcia and Sants, it did so with an elegance and style that is still admired today. The Eixample’s grid of streets includes intimate gardens and local cafés, and listed buildings such as Gaudí’s spectacular masterpieces, and Art Nouveau bakeries and chemists.

A different point of view
Sarrià-Sant Gervasi Once an independent village, Sarrià still feels worlds apart from the city it was absorbed by. Stretching up towards the surrounding Collserola Natural Park, you’ll find breathtakingly beautiful areas with unique views over the city below. The Tramvia Blau tram was opened in 1901 and climbs the steep hill from Plaça Kennedy to the foot of Tibidabo. The “white isle” was originally discovered in 654BC by the Phonecians, who named her “Iboshum”, after the Phonecian and Egyptian god of music and dance. By some remarkable coincidence it has now become home to some of the biggest clubs in the world. But if clubbing’s not for you don’t be put off: this island has so much more to offer than nightlife. Its ancient history and beaches are second to none.

The fortified old town is a World Heritage Site, and is still surrounded by tall defensive ramparts that date back to its Moorish and even Carthaginian conquerors. Small boutiques and restaurants line the narrow cobbled streets which open out into picturesque squares dotted with tables, and into gardens filled with bright yellow hibiscus, pink oleander and Mediterranean pines.
Talamanca Beach next to Eivissa Town is a long stretch of sand that dips gently into the water, making it ideal for kids. The smaller beach of Cala Nova, near Es Caná also has shallow waters. Santa Eulalia beach, in front of the resort of the same name, is a good spot for water sports and boat trips, and there are plenty of intimate little coves if you walk just a little further up the coast.
A 15th century cathedral perches on a panoramic ledge overlooking the sea, continuing to protect many generations of sailors. It is dedicated to "Our Lady of the Snows," or "la Verge de les Neus", and is also home to several important pieces of art such as 14th century Gothic panels. If you're more drawn towards modern art keep an eye out for contemporary galleries such as Sleepingcat on Av. I. Macabich 20.

They have an extensive selection of local cheeses from all over the region, as well different dried and cured meats. Natural products such as honey, olive oil and soap are available too. If that isn’t enough to entice you in, we have two words for you: free samples.

Correfoc Spectacular, exhilarating and unmistakably pagan, the “fire-run” is a highlight of any Festa Major. Diables, or devils dance through the streets brandishing fireworks that spin around a long pole, showering sparks in all directions. Stand well back if you're not wearing long sleeves! Tribal drumming accompanies the performance as it winds its way through the street.

Castellers human castles
A triumph of teamwork and trust, each human castle is created by intrepid teams who climb to stand on each other’s shoulders, topped by a brave little child who reaches the top, momentarily waves, and scrambles back down. Some of the most impressive towers created to date have been eight and even nine storeys high. Traditional pipe music begins when the tower base is considered stable.
Gegants & Capgrossos Each district of Barcelona and most Catalan towns have their own “giants” and “bigheads”. The giants are made with a tall hollow structure carried on someone’s shoulders and topped with a papier-mâché head whose features give each character a unique identity. Both the gegants and capgrossos take part in parades and have a solo moment as they dance around each other.

Bestiari Representations of real and mythical animals also take part in the traditional Festa Major dances and processions. Barcelona’s creatures include the lion “El Lleó”, the regal eagle “Àgila de Barcelona”, and the “Drac de Barcelona” dragon. Several Barcelona districts have their own dragon, such as “Gaudiamos” in Gràcia, who resembles Gaudí’s iconic dragon in Park Güell.
La Sardana The traditional folk dance of Catalonia is simple and yet intricate. Participants hold hands in a circle (keeping an eye on their bags in the middle) and take light steps as they point their toes and raise their arms. They are accompanied by a cobla of musicians with reed instruments, brass instruments and a string bass who play traditional medleys.

Gastronomic specialties Catalan cuisine follows two calendars – the seasonal cycles that provide fresh local products at different moments throughout the year, and the festive calendar. LA mercè
Just when you thought the summer was over the party-loving city of Barcelona bites back with the big one! This spectacular street festival spills out from many stages and venues throughout the city, with over 600 activities and events including music, fireworks and traditional parades. It dates back to 1902 and was originally a religious occasion to commemorate the city’s Patron Saint, La Mare de Déu de la Mercè. Every folkloric element of local tradition is represented; from the towering castellers, or human castles that can reach up to nine storeys high, to epic correfocs, with dancing devils skipping through the streets brandishing twirling fireworks alongside firebreathing dragons. The festival includes many other events, such as regatta ships in Port Vell, the Mercè marathon, and an international pyrotechnics festival which as ever will provide a spectacular closing fireworks display. Digital visual effects fuse with an impressive sound and light shows against the Sagrada Familia and the walls of the Ajuntament building in Pl. Sant Jaume. Various locations throughout Barcelona. The Labyrinth Tour
LOCAL TOURS
Get a different glimpse of Barcelona with a neighbourhood tour of the Horta District, away from the busy city centre. This was an independent village until 1904 when it merged with Barcelona to become another of its districts. Its main activities used to be farming and laundry. One of the highlights of this tour is the Labyrinth Garden, which is the oldest garden in Barcelona. It was once a private garden, originally designed in 1792 with many romantic and neo-classical details, such as flower beds, small squares, tall trees and a waterfall.
