onsidered one of the most beautiful buildings in Barcelona, the Palau de la Música Catalana is also one of the city’s most important classical and contemporary music venues. MODERNIST SPIRES OF CASA DE LES PUNXES T

his emblematic Modernist building was constructed in 1905 for the Terradas family by the prestigious architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch (1687-1956). Born in the Catalan town of Manresa, Puig i Cadafalch participated extensively in Barcelona’s architectural Modernist movement alongside luminaries such as Antoni Gaudí (whose works include Casa Batlló, La Pedrera and Park Güell) and Domènech i Muntaner (Palau de la Música Catalana, Hospital de Sant Pau). His passions were architecture, historical scholarship and politics, which he pursued with dedication and depth. A visit to the Casa de les Punxes reveals a unique structure built in a Medieval castle style, reminiscent of Northern Europe with dreamy turrets and a fairytale demeanour. Its wistful spires crown the late 19th and early 20th century aspirations of an emerging bourgeoisie on the leading edge of industrialisation. This was an era when Catalan industries were booming and the wealthy industrialists at the helm sought to consolidate their status by commissioning leading architects to build them a magnificent family home. Casa de les Punxes was designed for the three Terradas sisters, who each had their

own independent apartment below the emblematic turrets. It was opened to the public for the first time in summer 2016. The Noble Floor area, former residence of Angela Terradas, is infused with the legendary story of St Jordi, patron saint of Catalonia. Ceramic tiles depict the brave knight’s battle against the archetypal dragon in an especially masterful example of Modernist ceramic art. Video and animation are skilfully interwoven throughout the visit to provide a powerful multi-media narrative that accompanies the visceral experience evoked by the building itself. Both entertaining and educational, a tour of Casa de les Punxes is an invitation to step into a realm where myth and history are seamlessly interwoven into an experience which is sure to be a highlight of your visit to Barcelona. Another breathtaking detail is the view from the roof terrace, a majestic 600m2 space which offers a privileged panoramic gaze across the city centre. EL PRIORAT El Priorat is a very particular region in Catalonia located almost two hours south of Barcelona. This area is known for its hilly landscape, sweeping mountains and unique vineyards that give unusually in strong red wine. Settlements in the Priorat territory can be traced back to ancient times.

WINERIES IN THE PRIORAT

WINE TOURS

El Priorat is a premium wine region with over 500 vineyards and 100 wineries which has been producing distinctive wine for centuries. The grapes of the Priorat are small and sweet, growing and surviving in a dry, challenging climate. There are many wine tours in the Priorat in areas such as Gratallops and around the Montsant massif. A few popular wineries to visit are Alvaro Palacios, Perinet and La Catedral Del Vinos. Each of these wineries have guided tours available by appointment.

Local wineries offer various tours which explain and allow you to experience the wine-making process. The climate in Priorat gives its wines a special flavour, and so does its soil. Brittle, slate-like stones called llicorella are distinct to this region and help the vines search for nutrients and survive in dry, arid climates.

The Alvarado Palacios winery is one of the most famous in the region and is renowned throughout Spain. Palacios opened the winery in 1989 in this special region of Catalonia where he created three of his most famous wines; L’Ermita, Finca Dofi, and Les Teresses. 26

At the Perinet winery (Ctra. de Poboleda T-702), the tour begins with a visit to the vineyards. Visitors are invited to taste the incredibly sweet deep-purple grapes off the vine. The next stage is the fermenting process with numerous tubes along the floor and walls which propel the grapes into gigantic stainless-steel barrels. The wine is then decanted into wooden barrels where it matures and ages. At last, the final part of the tour is of course to sample the different wines and savour their distinctive flavour.

LOCK CLOCK ESCAPE :! ROOADM A FAMÍLIA

SAVING THE SAGR

CAN YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK TO SAVE THE BLUEPRINTS OF THE SAGRADA FAMÍLIA? This is the exciting premise behind Lock Clock’s Gaudí escape room, which challenges you to figure out a series of puzzles in order to escape an attempted anarchist arson attack which occurred in 1936. The door of this historical theme room is "locked", and an introductory talk provides an intriguing background on this landmark event It's an ideal activity for anyone looking for an alternative to typical sightseeing, and also a fun way to test your ingenuity in the face of riddles, codes and other cryptic clues. Traditions C AG A T I Ă“

This Christmas log is a smiling hollowed out piece of wood with a red barretina hat. Children "feed" him every day from the 8th December and keep him warm with a blanket. On Christmas Eve the children beat him with a stick, singing songs that demand he poops presents...and candy, nuts and figs come pouring out!

C H R I ST M A S M A R K E T S The most important Christmas market is the Fira de Santa LlĂşcia, opposite Barcelona Catherdral (30th Nov-23rd Dec). The square in front of La Sagrada FamĂlia also fills with festive stalls offering traditional Christmas figurines, nativity scenes and artisan gifts.

C AG A N E R A key character in the Catalan nativity scene is the caganer, a small figure defecating discretely behind the crib of baby Jesus. These statues symbolise fertilisation and renewal. In recent years they have been satirically represented by everyone from footballers and pop stars to royalty and politicians. Children love finding the caganer in the larger nativity scenes that have dozens of characters, including shepherds, kings, villagers and angels. 28

C H R I ST M A S L I G H T S Once Barcelona's street decorations are switched on at the end of November there's no denying that Christmas is just around the corner. Look out for the pretty lights in small streets of the Gothic and Born districts, and the large wall of electrified colour along Gran Via.

NEULES These thinly rolled wafers are often covered in chocolate or packed with a creamy filling, and traditionally served alongside a selection of turrรณn at the end of a Christmas meal. They are light and easy to eat, and the perfect accompaniment to a glass of cava at any time during the holiday season.

TURRร N This traditional Christmas sweet is made with honey, sugar, egg whites and almonds. Turrรณn de Jijona is a soft blend with ground almonds and oil, which makes it more sticky. Turrรณn de Alicante is a hard block made with whole almonds, and almost guaranteed to mess with any dental work. There are many other contemporary variations with additional ingredients such as chocolate, puffed rice and candied fruits.

EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BORN Charm and tradition This district is arguably one of the most beautiful in the city. The atmosphere of El Born is both historical and trendy; be sure to explore all the way through to Cituadella Park which acts as its leafy green backdrop. Take a wander down Carrer Princesa and into the narrow side roads. You may feel like you are getting lost, but rest assured you are guaranteed to find all the best little bars and restaurants favoured by locals.
