Day 1: Barcelona’s Old Town and the seafront 10:00 Have a relaxing breakfast in one of the bar terraces overlooking Barcelona Cathedral. You could try a cortado, a coffee shot with a splash of milk; rocket fuel to start your day. 10:30 After admiring the Cathedral and its magnificent façade, with the statue of Santa Eulàlia perched on top of the spire, step inside. Important religious paintings line the lateral altars. Get headsets for a guided tour and soak up the historical details. 11:40 Walk around the Cathedral; watch the street performers, listen to the buskers and leer back at the gargoyles. 11:50 Explore the narrow streets of the Gothic district. See if you can find the El Call Jewish quarter, which has one of the oldest synagogues in Europe on Carrer de l'Arc de Sant Ramon del Call, 4. 12:45 Emerge from the Gothic labyrinth into Plaça del Pi, a beautiful square with an artisan market. If you’d like a rest we recommend a stop at the classic Bar del Pi. 13:15 Visit the church of Santa María del Pi, which has the largest stained glass rosette in Europe. 14:00 Cross La Rambla and make your way to La Boqueria market. There are plenty of tapas bars where you can enjoy a spot of lunch. 15:30 Walk down La Rambla, noticing Miró’s mosaic mandala on the ground and the pretty flower stalls. Pass the statue of Christoper Columbus and you’re in Port Vell. 16:00 Take a few moments relax and look out to sea. 16:20 If you feel like a burst of shopping, cross the bridge into the Maremagnum shopping centre, an elegant construction with top high street brands and bars with great views. Alternatively you could take a catamaran tour and see Barcelona from the sea. 18:30 Take a leisurely stroll along the seafront, following the port as it curves down Passeig Joan de Borbó in Barceloneta. 19:30 You've reached the beach. It's time for an aperitif along the seafront. The fabulous Eclipse Bar on the 26th floor of the W Hotel offers designer cocktails and spectacular views. 21:00 Feeling peckish yet? Go for an authentic paella in one of the less touristy seafront restaurants, such as Ca La Nuri or L’Arenal on Passeig Marítim de la Barceloneta. 22:30 It's time to for some nightlife. You'll find one bar after the next in Port Olympic, from Arabic terraces with hookah pipes to salsa dancefloors and commercial discos.

Day 2: Gaudí and the Modernist Route
GAUDI
10:00 Start the day in style at Cacao Sampaka, C/ Consell de Cent, 292. This chocolate emporium was created by Albert Adrià, brother of the celebrity chef Ferran Adrià. Try their hot chocolate, chocolate croissants, or chocolate anything... 10:45 Go to Passeig de Gràcia and walk up the elegant boulevard until you see Gaudí’s magnificent Casa Batlló on the left. Definitely worth visiting. 12:00 Continue to walk up Passeig de Gràcia. You'll see Gaudí’s fabulous La Pedrera building on the right. Perhaps you'd rather visit this Modernist masterpiece instead? 12:30 Hop on the metro at Diagonal to Vallcarca and follow the signs to Park Güell. Gaudí’s landscaped gardens are truly spectacular, and so are the views. Take a selfie by the iconic dragon statue, and enjoy some live music in the park. 14:00 Keep walking downhill, and you'll reach the Gràcia district. This lively bohemian area has many squares which are surrounded by great bars and restaurants. For some alternative tapas (with good veggie options too) try Sol Soler (Plaça del Sol 21). 15:30 Take the metro to La Sagrada Família, the world’s only Modernist basilica and prepare to be amazed. Book your tickets online to avoid the queues. 17:00 Avinguda Gaudí stretches all the way from La Sagrada Familia to Hospital Sant Pau, another gem of Catalan Modernism. By this point, however, you may prefer to chill out in one of the terrace bars with a beer or ice-cream. 18:00 That's quite enough sightseeing for today. Take the metro to Jaume I, and go down Carrer de l’Argentería towards Santa María del Mar. There are plenty of delightful bars and cafés to discover in the trendy Born neighbourhood, such as the Café del Born at Rambla del Born, and Guzzo at Plaça Comercial, 10. 20:00 You could enjoy some dinner and a flamenco show at Restaurante Nervión (C/ Princesa 2). Or, check out the live music program at the MEAM European Modern Art Museum at Carrer de la Barra de Ferro, 5.

The Born Market was reinaugurated last year as a cultural centre with a special focus on 18th century life and the events of September 11th, 1714, when Catalunya lost its independence.

Special events and performances take place regularly, and there's a good restaurant inside.

Casa Batlló
There's no doubt about it, everyone loves Antoni Gaudí. Visitors and locals alike are in awe of his amazing architecture. Casa Batlló is one of his most famous works, located on the opulent Passeig de Gràcia. It is the perfect place to discover in the Modernist chapter of Barcelona's history.
Organic inspiration Casa Batlló is full of colour and life. Its unique design is complemented by intriguing materials and bright colours in every corner. Gaudí was deeply inspired by nature, and this can be seen throughout his work. Known to locals as the Casa dels Ossos, or “house of bones,” the outside façade of the structure appears to be made of bones, while the scaly roof is thought to represent the legendary dragon slain by Sant Jordi.
A historic renovation Casa Batlló was not always as it appears today. It was originally a very simple building constructed in 1877. The building was bought in 1900 by Josep Batlló who commissioned Gaudí to completely redesign the house, inside and out. The Batlló family lived there until the mid 1950’s, and in

1962 the building was named a Cultural Asset of Catalonia and then a Cultural Asset of Spain in 1969. Although it has existed in its current form since 1906, the amazing structure has only been open to the public since 2002. It was originally opened as part of the International Year of Gaudí, and visitors were only allowed to explore the Noble Floor. It was unexpectedly successful, and since then nearly the whole house has been opened for visitors.
Innovation meets information Casa Batlló recently launched a video guide with augmented reality and 3D images that present Antoni Gaudí’s original plans for the house. This new technology takes visitors on a trip back in time to visualize how things looked when the Batlló family lived there. You can get a fascinating insight into the furniture on the Noble Floor, and watch the organic and natural animations that reveal the beauty and functionality of this home. Another new treat for visitors is a recreation of the award winning “Awakening at Casa Batlló”. This ground breaking audio-visual mapping of Casa Batlló was created in 2012 to celebrate the

10th anniversary of the house opening to the public. A miniature model, just over 2 metres tall, of the award winning project can be viewed with projections that transform the house into a multitude of stories and ideas that are thought to have inspired the architect, such as the legend of Sant Jordi. It invites you to step into the world of Antoni Gaudí and helps you to understand the secrets of his entire work.

Many people don’t know that it’s free to visit the upper half of Park Güell. Take bus 24 or 92 in the direction of El Carmel and get off at the back entrance to enjoy some amazing, panoramic views of the city, without the price tag.
Many of Barcelona's museums and art galleries offer free entry on the first Sunday of each month. These include the MUHBA Barcelona History Museum, Catalonia History Museum and the Picasso Museum. Others are free every Sunday afternoon from 3pm.

Gothic Architecture
Turó de la Rovira, also known as the Carmel Bunkers above Guinardó Park, offers perhaps the best 360º views of Barcelona. This site was an anti-aircraft defense base during the Spanish Civil War. It can be reached with the 24 bus, or a 25 minute uphill walk from Guinardó metro.
Barcelona Cathedral is one of the most important buildings in the city and entry in the morning and early evening is free. Head to the cloister to catch a glimpse of the thirteen white geese, or simply admire the amazing CatalanGothic architecture.

Las Arenas shopping centre in Plaça Espanya used to be a bull ring and is now a more modern entertainment centre with shops, cinemas and bars. Take the glass elevator to the rooftop where you can enjoy fantastic views of the city and Montjuïc.
Tapas are of course one of the staples of Spanish cuisine. Enjoy these tasty Iberian treats without stretching the pennies – keep an eye out for the bars in Barcelona that offer a free nibble with every drink purchased.
The winding streets and historic buildings of the Gothic Quarter are perfect for losing yourself and provide hours of fascination for wanderers. Free guided walking tours depart from the Travel Bar on Carrer de la Boqueria, 27. However, tips are of course expected and appreciated.

A different angle Using creative angles to frame your shot can take an ordinary picture to new heights. These church walls almost look like paving stones that lead to the gargoyle.
Watch your back Your backgrounds are never neutral. They either add to your composition or take away from it. Try playing with the contrast between static and moving objects.
Capture the moment These people sitting against the Born Cultural Centre are perfectly illuminated against a great backdrop. Are they posing?

Light and contrast Play around with the different effects of direct light, indirect light and backlight. Perhaps you could experiment with pictures taken from the same spot at different times of the day.

El Gordo, or "The Big One" is the world's largest Christmas lottery. Tickets cost 20€ and winners are drawn on the 22nd Dec.
Street performers are everywhere in the city. Regulars include break dancers in Plaça dels Àngels, talented Spanish guitarists who play below the Gothic gargoyles of the Cathedral, and "human statues" on La Rambla.

La molina This ski resort near Barcelona is perfect for a day trip, and if you can make a weekend of it then you're dancin'. La Molina is surrounded by mountain peaks that reach over 2500 metres into the crisp blue skies, and offers some of the best winter sports facilities near Barcelona.

La Molina is one of the oldest ski resorts in Spain, and is also one of the closest to Barcelona. Its 53 slopes cover 61km of downhill runs of all different levels.
If neither skiing nor snowboarding appeal, the good news is that there are plenty of other winter activities for you to enjoy here. These include exploring this winter wonderland on foot with snow rackets, or taking a white-knuckle ride through the snow on motor sledges.
Beginners and children are in luck, there are 13 green and 16 blue slopes to enjoy. More advanced skiers will be challenged by 17 red slopes and 7 black ones which snake their way down the steeper sides of the mountains. Snowboarders are also very well looked after at La Molina, and any boarder who has mastered the “staying upright� technique can let rip with tricks at the two snowparks. The Alabaus snowpark includes the only 170m long superpipe in the Pyrenees, and the Trampoline Snowpark has rails, jumps, and a spectacular wallride.

A key character in the Catalan nativity scene is the caganer, a small figure defe cating discretely behind the scene of baby Jesus. These statues symbolise fertilisation and renewal. Another Christmas tradition is the caga tió, or “pooing log”, a scooped-out sma ll log with a smiling face, covered in a red blan ket. As children hit it with a stick and sing a song the log pours out nougat and sweets whic h are concealed under its cloak.

First impressions: The heart of Barcelona's historic centre is a labyrinth of small streets. This was once the Roman town of Barcino, and you'll find parts of the old Roman wall, tombs, and even columns from the Temple of Augustus. Imposing churches back onto the historic Jewish quarter and lively cafés and tapas bars fill the many squares, from the busy Plaça Reial just off the Ramblas to the more secluded Plaça Sant Felip Neri.

Insider tips: Take the time to look up at the builings and notice details like their cast-iron window frames, or a corner statue dedicated to a local saint. Go on a walking tours, and ask the guide to recommend their favourite spots.

First Impressions: The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

Insider tips: There are plenty of quality restaurants offering great value “menu del dia” lunch menus, many of which are not located too far from the important monuments such as Gaudí´s Pedrera and Casa Batlló. If you fancy some shopping, look out for the smart boutiques concentrated in the top part of the Eixample, near C/ Diagonal.

DIRECTORY & MAPS First Impressions: This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona's top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. Frank Gehry's famous “fish” sculpture gives an eclectic touch to the modern leisure complex it stands above. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces, and a busy nightlife scene.
