BARCELONA CONNECT

Be aware that drinking alcohol in the street is illegal, and you can be fined from 30€ – 1500€ according to the severity of the disturbance. Bikinis and shirts-off is just for the beach, cover up in town. The police can fine people for buying goods from unauthorised street traders as well as the sellers themselves.

SIGHTSEEING

In your apartment

· · ·

Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sound carries up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Make sure doors and windows are locked when you leave the apartment to prevent theft. Don't leave money or valuables in your room. Use a safe deposit box.

Protect your property

· · ·

Keep your luggage in sight, or use a left luggage service. Make sure bags are always closed. Protect your personal belongings, especially in crowded areas such as the city centre, La Rambla, public transport and the beach. You may wish to leave your passport or identity card in your hotel or apartment's safe, and carry a certified photocopy instead.

MEETUP GROUPS

TIPPING ETIQUETTE

MERCAT GALVANY

Barcelona has a large international community. Many informal groups meet for everything from bar crawls and tapas tours to themed evenings and cultural visits organised by locals. meetup.com/barcelona

A tip is always a good way of showing appreciation for someone's services. Cover charges are included in all bills, but leaving anything from a couple of coins change in a bar to a larger tip after a good meal is always welcomed.

This neighbourhood market in the uptown district of Sant Gervasi is the city’s largest iron structure, with coloured glass windows. It is far less crowded than the Boqueria market and offers a more local glimpse of city life.

ARTICKET: 6 MUSEUMS & GALLERIES FOR LESS Gain complete access to the permanent and temporary collections of the CCCB, Museu Picasso, Fundació Miró, Fundació Tàpies, MACBA Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona and Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya for just 30€, valid during three months. These discount cards are available directly from the museums or tourist offices around Barcelona. www.articketbcn.org

ADVANCE TICKETS FOR PARK GÜELL This unique park combines beautiful flowerbeds and natural spaces with Gaudí's "trencadis" style tilework on the ornamental esplanade, mandalas, and adorning the famous lizard. Tickets are limited and sell out every day, so book in advance at www.parkguell.cat and arrive at the allocated time. Why not pack a picnic and enjoy the whole day in the park?!

HAVE YOU TRIED "ESCALIVADA" YET? Freshly made escalivada is a local specialty which melts in the mouth. It is made from smoke-grilled peppers, eggplant and onions which are mixed with olive oil and garlic and left to marinate and soak up the flavours. It is sometimes topped with anchovies and accompanied by crispy pa amb tomàquet, bread rubbed with fresh tomato and a drizzle of good quality olive oil. Delicious!

TOP 5 THINGS TO DO in Port Vell Previously an obsolete harbor, Port Vell is now one of Barcelona’s hot spots after the area was totally regenerated for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. This happening place is great for a spot of retail therapy, nightlife, family entertainment, museums, as well as some of Barcelona’s best seafood restaurants.

1. Take a Boat Trip Hop on board one of the iconic “Golondrina” boats and explore the coastline by sea. Whether you fancy just a quick trip, or a full excursion along the 18 stretch of coastline from Colón to the Forum of Sant Adrià de Besòs, there’s something for everyone.

2. Visit Catalonia History Museum This magnificent building is now home to the Museu d'Història de Catalunya. This fascinating museum is a must for anyone with a keen interest in history or simply wanting to delve deeper into the history of Catalonia.

3. Go shopping in Maremagnum A shopping lover’s haven, this retail and leisure complex has a wide range of brands available from Desigual to Mango, so take 24

your pick from the latest trends. There are also several traditional restaurants and cafés with beautiful views across the harbour. Maremagnum is open every day.

4. Explore the Aquarium As the largest aquarium in Europe, a visit here will undeniably be an unforgettable experience for the whole family. Delve into the depths of the Mediterranean Sea and observe over 11,000 water creatures, 450 different species and 6 million litres of water.

5. Enjoy the views from the Columbus Monument The statue has a 60m high viewing gallery which offers remarkable views of La Rambla and the nearby Port Vell. You can also see as far as the Gothic Quarter to Montjuïc.

BARCELONA’S OLDEST BARS Do you want to drink with Dalí, get giddy with Gaudí, or have a few with Hemingway? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Barcelona is full of old drinking haunts that have lasted through some of the city’s most turbulent times and remain open for business today. Tilly Brogan introduces three of her favourites.

Bar Marsella (1820) Marsella is by far the most famous old bar in the city, frequented in the past by the likes of Gaudí, Picasso, Dalí, and Hemingway, just to name a few… and not much has changed in the last 200 years. Marsella is Barcelona’s very own time machine, taking punters back to the early 1800s with dusty chandeliers and the same mirrors from almost two centuries ago. Even their signature drink of absinthe has stood the test of time. Sant Pau, 65

Casa Almirall (1860)

K

Ordained with moon-shaped lamps, marble décor, and an amazing Gaudí-style wooden doorway, Casa Almirall is a living and breathing representation of Barcelona’s Modernist movement. Despite its old roots, the bar has successfully managed to keep its drinkers hooked by adding a second large room at the back of the bar, and the reinstatement of an old-time tradition – serving vermouth with a skewered olive. Joaquín Costa, 33

London Bar (1910) Just off the Raval side of the Rambla, London Bar is a far cry from anything you would find in England’s capital city. With over a century to date, this bar was a favourite of Miró and Dalí; its walls are sure to have heard a few interesting philosophical and political conversations in its day. Like Casa Almirall, this bar has still managed to conserve its Modernist décor but offers a different vibe to the previous, its location slightly further away from the tourist trail. Nou de la Rambla, 34 26

DON’T MISS OUT! ACTIVITIES IN ROSES Roses is famous for its semi-wild coastal areas that boast a wealth of underwater action. Try your hand at diving or snorkelling, or take a trip on a boat with undersea views. You could also try water-skiing, windsurfing, or sailing... or just hire a pedalo for an hour to explore the coastline. There are also plenty of historical monuments and buildings that provide serene shade and interesting tales such as the Casa Mallol, which features beautiful craftsmanship from local artisans.

WINE ROUTE The DO Empordà region has a wine tradition that dates back to Roman times, with vineyards that have been growing grapes for centuries. There is a high quality production of red, white and rosé wines spread across the inland areas of the region. Many vineyards are open for the public to explore and taste their specialties, and vineyard tours are organised through the tourist office.

FERIA DE ABRIL Traditional

Flamenco takes centre stage, and the marquees get packed by lively audiences who come to watch the passionate twirls of polk-a-dot frocked girls and dramatic gestures of the proud and elegant men alongside them. Flamenco guitar, the cajón drum and hand-clapping accompany the dancers in a festive celebration of spring. There's a also a funfair with a ferris wheel, rides and games both children and adults to enjoy. Parc del Fòrum · www.fecac.com May

LES PÊCHEURS DE PERLES AT

LICEU OPERA BARCELONA

© Werner Kmetitsch

T

Bizet created the paradisiacal climate of the island of Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, with a detailed instrumentation full of details and greatly exotic scenes. The Theater an der Wien production moves the action into the 21st century and takes the contestants of a famous television program to a desert 13-25 MAY: island where they must survive.

he excellent opera Les Pêcheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers) by Georges Bizet is presented for the first time at the Liceu in its original French version. There will be 10 performances taking place from the 13th-25th May. This masterpiece is full of delicate moments such as Nadir’s aria "Je crois encore" and the famous duo of friendship "Au fond du temple saint" sung by the fishermen Zurg and Nadir.

LES PÊCHEURS DE PERLES AT LICEU OPERA BARCELONA

The opera arrives at the Liceu with two great tenors who share the difficult role of Nadir: John Osborn and Dmitry Korchak, both great light tenors and experts in French repertoire who are required to reach some challenging notes.

This production by Lotte de Beer has received some very positive reviews for its plot, great beauty and intelligence.

Don’t miss your opportunity to discover one of the great operas of the French repertoire of the 19th century, sung by excellent voices. Liceu Opera Barcelona La Rambla 51-59 · www.liceubarcelona.cat 31

This was once the Roman town of Barcino, and you'll find parts of the old Roman wall, tombs, and even columns from the Temple of Augustus. EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BARCELONETA & PORT OLÍMPIC Along the seafront This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona's top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, and there's a busy nightlife scene.
