LA PEDRERA A Masterpiece of Nature La Pedrera, formally known as Casa Milà, was constructed between 1906 and 1912 by Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926). It was initially designed as a fashionable home for the wealthy Milà family, and at the time of construction its unusual structure and irregular shaped walls created concern. However, Gaudí´s masterpiece has since received universal recognition and in 1984 it was declared a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage site which welcomes over a million visitors each year. This unique work of art is undoubtedly a masterpiece of nature, and new details have been added this season to enhance the experience of a visit. Gaudí’s declaration that “The great book, which is always open and which we must make an effort to read, is that of nature,” resonates in each corner of the building and its presentation to the public. La Pedrera truly stands out as the culmination of Gaudí’s vision in its purest and most coherent architectural expression. Its columns are palm trees, its spaces are 24

caverns with stalactites tumbling from rugged ceilings and its cast-iron decorations follow the meandering and organic curves of the woodlands and forests where Gaudí grew up and received his most profound inspiration. A few details worth highlighting include a new lighting installation which evokes the beating of a giant insect wing that sweeps across the main entrance hall, contrasting with the coloured walls of the interior façade and the deep blue sky above. Floral motifs predominate and are accompanied by imagery from both natural and mythological realms. The overhead arches of the Espai Gaudí interior resemble the skeletal frame of an animal’s rib cage. Innovative lighting plays with the visitor’s sense of perception and perspective and synchronises with a suggestive soundtrack that might evoke the breath of a giant whale accompanied by the steady pulse of its beating heart.

FEATURES

And of course, no visit would be complete without immersing yourself in the magical world of the terrace overlooking Passeig de Gràcia, with its iconic chimneys and symbolic details. The four elements of earth, water, fire and air are represented by the shapes of the tiled chimneys. Another famous detail is the cluster of warrior heads, who recite the verses of poets such as Joan Maragall, Jorge Luis Borges, Lord Byron and Tennyson. Sound, light and images are used to enhance the sensations evoked throughout the visit. A powerful short video is projected directly onto an interior stone wall; sensitive and surreal animation fuses the natural world with the building it inspired, giving a suggestive insight into Gaudí’s inner creative process. LE SONGE 16TH-19TH MAY

One of the most magnificent venues in Europe, the Liceu Opera Barcelona hosts internationally acclaimed opera and ballet performances which feature the most prominent directors, choreographers and artists of the contemporary cultural panorama. This eagerly awaited return of Le Songe brings the magic of William Shakespeare’s classic romantic comedy to the stage in a delightful ballet by choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot. Originally created in 2005, background music by Felix Mendelssohn accompanies theatre and dance.

Instead, family influences and courtly dictates attempt to create a different reality, one which none of the young lovers is prepared to accept. Hermia and Lysander plan to elope in the woods one fateful Midsummer night where they meet Oberon and Titania, the Fairy King and Queen. Misunderstandings and mischief ensue when the good intentions of Oberon’s merry servant Puck and his magic love potion are comically misplaced. After a night of adventures and magic, relationships are realigned with their true destiny and the lovers reawaken, as Puck asks BALLET the audience for forgiveness and EXTRAVAGANZA declares that it was all a dream.

Sensitive, playful, ingenious, brilliant, diabolical or serious, three AT LICEU generations of dancers represent OPERA a bustling human microcosm that As choreographer Maillot reminds BARCELONA intertwines humour and wit. With this us, “Life without love is sad”, a production, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, sentiment which is evocatively heir to the tradition created by Serge expressed by the three dimensions of Diaghilev, asserts its traditional roots, and at love portrayed in this ballet. The Athenian the same time, its commitment to the avant-garde. Duke and his court represent the social love that binds people of the same social status together. The The complex tangle of affairs begins with Theseus, fairies symbolise carnal love, and love for theatre is Duke of Athens, who arranges a four day festival expressed by the participants in the Midsummer to celebrate his marriage to Hippolyta, Queen of drama. Embodied imagination entwines with deep the Amazons. Two young men, Demetrius and questions of desire and identity in this powerful performance at the Liceu Opera Barcelona. Lysander and their lovers Helena and Hermia are prevented from following the deep desires that urge them to take the hand of their beloved. www.liceubarcelona.cat 30

EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BARCELONETA & PORT OLÍMPIC Along the seafront This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona's top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, and there's a busy nightlife scene.
