LOST IN THE LABYRINTH Ever wondered how PacMan must have felt, turning corner after corner to escape from the maze? Lose yourself in this labyrinth as you search for the statue of Eros in the centre. This 18th century neoclassical garden is the oldest in the city. The Horta Labyrinth Garden is near Mundet metro (L3), at Passeig dels Castanyers, 1-17.

turó de la rovira This is the highest of Barcelona's three hills, or tres turons, and has some of the most spectacular views of the city below and sea beyond. You can see the remains of air defense bunkers from the Civil War (1936-1939), and tiled floors that belonged to shanty houses constructed by immigrants in the 1940s and 1950s. Walk to the top of Park Guinardó, or take the 24 bus to Carrer Mühlberg.

3 plaça eivissa This square forms the nucleus of Horta's residential district. It is surrounded by traditional bars and restaurants with terraces where you can enjoy the early spring sunshine. The Horta neighbourhood was once an independent village, separated from Barcelona by kilometres of fields. It can now easily reached by metro. Get off at Horta, Line 5.

The Born Market was reinaugurated last year as a cultural centre with a special focus on 18th century life and the events of September 11th, 1714, when Catalonia lost its independence.
Barcelona's rich maritime history is displayed in this old shipyard. Fascinating nautical exhibits give an insight into the era when Spanish galleons ruled the waves.

A Design for Life... Museu de Cultures del Món Inaugurated last month, this new museum is located opposite the Picasso Museum and contains a superb collection of artefacts that perfectly justifies its name. Exhibits come from different cultures in Africa, Asia, America and Oceania, and have been brought together to create a diverse, intriguing exhibition which will capture anyone’s interest and imagination. Mayan axes, African masks and Buddhist sculptures are just a few of the things you'll see as you move between the many rooms of this new museum. Set in the heart of the Born district this place is definitely worth a visit. A Unique Collection The museum aims to be a centre for the preservation and presentation of non-Western artistic heritage and with around 2,400 art objects there is plenty to see. To help bring the pieces alive they are interspersed with interactive and audiovisual resources including

touch-screen monitors, which you can use to browse photos, videos and information. Multimedia guides are available, and you can also download an app to enhance your experience. This multimedia approach combined with well-presented information enables you to imagine how different people lived (and live), making this exhibition a true exploration of world cultures rather than simply a collection of art. A quick look at two of Barcelona's newest museums... Museu del Disseny This vast, spacious piece of modern architecture contains over 70,000 objects which showcase design at its best. Ranging from corsets to cupboards and from hats to handkerchiefs the museum exhibits a diverse collection which brings together both old and new. The building, which overlooks an artificial lake and has seven floors, is estimated to have cost over 100 million euros. Sustainability was a key factor in its construction and it has its own self sufficient energy system. The museum is divided into many sections, some parts let the objects speak for themselves whereas others are more informative. Highlights/Don't miss: Metròpolis Barcelona (Closes 25th April) Using multimedia to offer a futuristic, enlightening, data-centric perspective on the design of the city of Barcelona, this exhibition brings together video, photography, stunning graphics, statistics
and music. An informative, visually stimulating section that firmly puts your finger on the pulse of the city. Dressing the body: Silhouettes and Fashion This chronological display of dresses spans from the sixteenth century to the present and explores the relationship between society's vision of beauty and the design of clothes, principally dresses. Each historical period had its own moral, social and aesthetic codes and this exhibition shows how these were reflected in fashion. It's interesting to see how fashion started to take off with the first little black dresses of Modernity from the 1930s. Colonia Güell Gaudí’s architecture in Barcelona includes some of the city’s top sights, from the Sagrada Familia to the unique Modernist constructions of Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. When Gaudí’s patron, the industrialist Eusebi Güell, relocated his textiles factory to an industrial colony near Sant Boi in 1898, he asked Gaudí to build the “crypt”, or church. It’s an easy day trip from Barcelona and well worth visiting.

Güell's industrial colony was designed as a self sustaining socio-economic community, with everything that the workers needed for a well balanced life. Gaudí developed extensive plans for a magnificent Modernist church, with his trademark non-linear columns and undulating arches. The congregation sit in a fan shape around the central altar, creating a real atmosphere of unity.
As the textile industry began to wane, its operations were scaled down until it was finally closed in 1973. Workers were offered the first option to buy their house, and local institutions and businesses bought up the land and factory spaces. In 1990 the Colonia Güell was declared a Property of Cultural Interest and Historical Ensemble.
Gaudí’s original project included two naves and a 40m high central dome. Funds dried up and in 1914 the project was left unfinished. However, the completed crypt is truly spectacular, with breathtaking stained glass windows, intricate ceramic mosaics like those in Park Güell, and an asymmetrical exterior whose details confirm the same hand that conceived the Sagrada Familia.

tips for visitors Keep an eye out for the Modernist constructions built by Gaudí's contemporaries, such as Ca L'Ordal, a traditional country house by Francesc Berenguer and Joan Rubió. If you’re there for lunch, the historic El Ateneu restaurant does a great menú del día.

Visit the Mammoth Museum Prehistoric creatures never fail to fascinate the kids, and this unusual collection of bones, skeletons and full size reconstructions of mammoths with their long fur and imposing curved tusks is well worth a visit. Its convenient location in the Born district makes it ideal for a fun day out, and a good Plan B if the Picasso Museum queues are too hairy. Montcada 1, M Jaume I. Tasty Treats at the Chocolate Museum The chocolate-making classes for kids are notoriously popular, especially around Easter, and loads of fun for the whole family. In addition to this, the museum itself contains many interesting chocolate sculptures to see and exhibits to explore. Pedralbes Monastery Slightly off the beaten track and well worth visiting, this Benedictine monastery was inaugurated in 1324 and was home to an order of Poor Clare nuns until 1983. Several rooms were converted into an ecclesiastical museum, with an impressive collection of church relics and finery. The cloisters are particularly magnificent. Take the time to explore the nearby Pedralbes district too.

for Beercelona! It’s an exciting time for beer lovers in the city, as Barcelona Beer Festival is back and ready to invite us into its world and culture of craft beer. The festival presents over 300 craft beers and some tasty nibbles to accompany the drinks. Plenty of activities will keep you entertained throughout the weekend, such as meeting brewers at the festival, tasting sessions, workshops about gastronomy and cultural events along with presentations of some of the best beer projects of today. Guests can eat, drink and be merry while the Say It Loud Barcelona DJs spin some of the best Black music. This will also be the third consecutive year that the Barcelona Beer Festival has teamed up with four local breweries to create a limited edition beer pack. This includes four beers and an informative presentation, each one representing an ingredient needed to make beer. Cervesa de Montseny represents water, La Vella Caravana represents hops, Glops represents malt and Biir

represents yeast. These will be the only bottled beers at the festival, and the only ones you can buy to take home with you. The Barcelona Maritime Museum, located in Drassanes, welcomes the festival which last year was attended by over 20,000 people. A group of volunteers around the venue will tell you how the festival works, what they recommend you try, and will share any information you might be curious about regarding the world and culture of craft beer. When purchasing a ticket, you will receive a booklet of over 80 pages containing information about the festival such as reviews about the participating beers, a special festival glass that you will use for all your drinks, and two tokens for your first tipples. Easter is an important celebration in Spain, and its Catholic roots are remembered during this holy week. Most events take place inside the churches, some spill out onto the streets. Processions are organised by religious brotherhoods associated with a church. Whilst in Seville there are lavish processions with 57 brotherhoods, in Barcelona there are just two. These are the "Nuestra Señora de las Angustias" from the church of Sant Jaume in C/ Ferran, and the "Hermandad de la Macarena y la de Jesús del Gran Poder" from Sant Agustí church in Pl. de Sant Agustí 2, in the Raval. Saint George is Catalonia's patron saint, and he is celebrated with the fusion of Valentine's Day and World Book Day, and lovers exchange roses and books. Impromptu book stalls and rose sellers line every street corner and square, and by the end of the day around 800,000 books and approximately 4 million roses have been sold! Roses have been associated with Sant Jordi since Medieval times; according to the legend, when the brave knight slayed the dragon a red rose bush grew from the drops of his blood. The 23rd April also commemorate the deaths of the literary greats Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare. Throughout Barcelona, especially La Rambla, Rambla Catalunya and Plaça Sant Jaume.

You've travelled around much of Europe… How does Barcelona's culinary scene compare? It isn't as well organized as cities such as Paris or Frankfurt. Chefs weren’t especially considered here until about 20 years ago. Now that a chef or restaurateur is a prestigious job many more people want to try their hand, but they often don’t have any experience or background. Barcelona is a constantly evolving city. What changes have you seen in recent years? A lot of fashions and trends have swept in. There are so many restaurants in Barcelona – in my opinion too many, but relatively few where you can eat really well. If you go further north to the Basque Country or Navarra you get pretty much good quality anywhere. What are the most popular items on your menu? Our philosophy is to prepare traditional, simple and classic dishes. Our tuna marinade is definitely a favourite. From the tapas selection I'd
highlight the croquettes with ham or foie, and of course our patatas bravas, which bravasbcn.com say are number two in town! What in your opinion is the best Catalan of cuisine? We’ve got everything really. We’re spoiled for choice with fresh Mediterranean ingredients from the sea, the mountains and countryside. Tell me what you eat, I’ll tell you who you are. So, what’s your favourite dish, and what does that make you? Escudella Catalana. It’s got everything – beef, pork, ham, vegetables, pasta… I’m straightforward, an extrovert who enjoys life! What does “quality” mean to you? When people are happy from the moment they enter to the moment they leave, that’s quality, and that includes everything. Good service, a comfortable ambience, a pleasant bathroom, and of course great food. That’s our philosophy, and we’re about to open a third restaurant in the residential neighbourhood of Fabra I Puig.
