Protective helmets are compulsory for cyclists under the age of 16. Cyclists must use the cycle lanes; if there isn’t one, stay in the lane closest to the pavement. Using the bus lane is not permitted. Bikes can only ride on pavements that are wider than 5 metres.

Be aware that drinking alcohol in the street is illegal, and you can be fined from 30€ - 1500€ according to the severity of the disturbance. arragona is perhaps best known for its previous incarnation as Tarraco, the Roman capital of the Iberian Peninsula. Many of its historic remains are exceptionally well preserved, which earned the city the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The city was first captured by the Romans in 218 BC. They built an infrastructure with everything from an amphitheatre and aqueduct, to a forum with spaces for business and temples for worship, roads, and of course, strongly fortified city walls to protect its perimeter. The walls themselves are considered to be the oldest remaining Roman structure outside Italy, and you can walk along some of these remains and catch some great views through the slits in the stone which were originally made for firing arrows. 20
SHOPPING ON LA RAMBLA NOVA This elegant avenue is the top retail hotspot of the city. You'll find high street brands and luxurious cafĂŠs on this main Rambla, and smaller boutiques with fashion and crafts from local artisans along its side streets.

TURÓ DE LA ROVIRA T
ucked away in the secluded district of Carmel, you’ll find one of Barcelona's most spectacular hidden gems, the Turó de la Rovira. Standing at 262 metres above sea level, this spot undoubtedly provides the most incredible panoramic views of the city. You can enjoy perfect vistas of some of Barcelona’s most famous landmarks including the Sagrada Família, Tibidabo and the Torre Agbar. Aside from the views, this location is known for its cluster of war bunkers, cannon platforms and look-out points; timeless relics from the Spanish Civil War. Although not quite as shrouded in mystery as they were a few years ago, the bunkers are still relatively unknown to most visitors, thanks to their remoteness and omission from most tourist guides, which provides a welcome break from the swarms of sightseers found at nearby Park Güell. The bunkers were originally used as antiaircraft batteries during the Spanish Civil War and were part of Barcelona’s active defence, constructed in response to the city’s first bombings. After the war, and in response to the housing shortages at the time, the area was 24
FEATURES colonised by several local families. The shanty district of huts and shacks of the “Barrio de los Cañones”, as it became known, remained in place until the early ‘90s. LST : POETRY IN DARKNESS This is an extremely well produced concept. The Nightlife team was invited to the opening and quite literally the performance blew us away. Since 2007, Live Soundtracks is an organisation that has bean steadily earned critical acclaim and is now beginning to conquer new countries, with successful events at major festivals such as roBOt in Bologna, Italy, as well as building on its roots here in Barcelona. LST’s philosophy is clear: each performance takes the “aesthestic of on-screen cinema”, editing images and nonmusical sounds, with hypnotic electronic sounds heralding a pioneering all-sensory reality through performance. It is the next logical step in electronic music’s journey, allowing musicians or film producers to experiment and programme music to words and pictures, or vice versa.
