Protective helmets are compulsory for cyclists under the age of 16. Cyclists must use the cycle lanes; if there isn’t one, stay in the lane closest to the pavement. Using the bus lane is not permitted. Bikes can only ride on pavements that are wider than 5 metres.

Be aware that drinking alcohol in the street is illegal, and you can be fined from 30€ – 1500€ according to the severity of the disturbance. Bikinis and shirts-off is just for the beach, cover up in town. The police can fine people for buying goods from unauthorised street traders as well as the sellers themselves.

Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sound carries up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Make sure doors and windows are locked when you leave the apartment to prevent theft. Don't leave money or valuables in your room. Use a safe deposit box.

Keep your luggage in sight, or use a left luggage service. Make sure bags are always closed. Protect your personal belongings, especially in crowded areas such as the city centre, La Rambla, public transport and the beach. If you are drawn to classic and chic labels, then head straight to Passeig de Gràcia. This luxurious boulevard boasts beautiful buildings and décor, including the magnificent Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. Many of the most prestigious fashion shops and brands in Barcelona are located here, including Bulgari, Gucci, Hermès, Prada, Emporio Armani, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. If you are on a budget, or don’t want to splash out as far as a pair of Jimmy Choo stilettos, then check out the high-street stores such as Zara, Mango and H&M with their aspirational knock-offs.
2. BORN This trendy cultural hub is an up-and-coming fashion district with plenty of independent boutiques that specialise in one-off items and contemporary fashion. Many of the best shops are in Carrer Rec, Carrer dels Flassaders, and in the small streets off Rambla del Born.
3. RAVAL If you are bringing goods out of the EU, ask for a Tax Free Cheque in the shop.

The quirky neighbourhood of El Raval has an abundance of vintage clothes stores, located mainly on Carrer Tallers and Carrer de la Riera Baixa. You'll find everything from faux fur, camouflage jackets, shoes and bags from whatever decade floats your boat.

This boulevard crosses the Modernist Eixample district and leads from Plaça de Catalunya to Diagonal. One of the trendiest shopping streets in Barcelona, international brands and exquisite local designers present their latest offerings in its small boutiques and larger stores.
Just below Plaça de Catalunya you'll find this pedestrian street which is brimming with top high street stores such as El Corte Inglés, Zara and Cortefiel. There are also lots of several shoe shops, and sparkles from Swarovski. It's a short stroll from here to the Cathedral, and you'll find plenty of boutiques and quirky stores in the nearby streets of the Gothic quarter.
5. GRÀCIA Once an independent village, Gràcia still retains a strong sense of its own identity; alternative, slightly bohemian, and very Catalan. Gràcia provides the classic high street stores found throughout Barcelona, as well as more arty, funky and independent boutiques. It is popular with students and has lots of squares lined with bars and terraces.

This wide avenue has been recently renovated and its tree-lined pedestrian promenade is full of elegant shops. Its shopping area stretches from the top of Passeig de Gràcia to Plaça Francesc Macià and continues towards Maria Cristina and the L'illa Diagonal shopping centre.

EL FLEA The next edition of this quirky flea market is on the 10th March from 11:00-18:00, at Plaça Blanquerna, behind the Maritime Museum next to Drassanes. There is always a lively vibe with DJs, live music and entertainment.

THE PRICE OF A CUP OF COFFEE Be aware that bars often have a three-tier pricing system. A table on the outdoor terrace has the largest surcharge, and you might pay more if you sit at a table inside rather than perch on a stool at the bar.
STREET ART Parc de las Tres Xemeneies, near Parallel metro, is one of the city's hotspots for graffiti art. Artists are allowed to paint here, so there's always a lively underground ambience and plenty of raw creativity racing across its walls.
RAVAL BY NIGHT This neighbourhood has changed drastically in the last 20 years, although you are still advised to take care in its back streets at night. It remains the most multicultural inner city district. Many new bars and restaurants have opened recently along the Rambla del Raval, home to the famous Raval Cat. Another popular street, with a more indie vibe, is nearby Joaquim Costa.
PICASSO'S SKETCHES Thousands of visitors gather daily in the square by Barcelona Cathedral, looking up at its Gothic spires. If you turn around you’ll notice an unusual building on the corner. The exterior wall of the Collegi D’Arquitects de Barcelona (Architectural Society) has large friezes based on drawings by Picasso. There’s also a magnificent library of architecture books inside.
EXPLORE CATALONIA AT THE MINIATURE VILLAGE Visit all of Catalonia in one day at this unique attraction, which has 150 miniature models of the region’s most significant cultural treasures. These include the Romanesque churches of Val de Boi, Gaudí’s masterpieces in Barcelona and the Gothic Cathedral of Manresa. SECRETS OF BARCELONA THE FRIARS OF BOQUERIA MARKET The Boqueria market was built over the ruins of the Carmelite Descalços de Sant Josep convent, which had a reputation for strange occurrences. One of the spookiest tales tells that a group of dead friars (or rather cadavers with tunics) appeared and sang one night in front of the surprised and terrified brothers of the congregation. The cadavers then returned to their tombs in the cemetery. Ten days later, on the 25th July 1835, the convent was attacked and the Carmelites were slaughtered. Since then, every 25th July, it is said that you can hear the sound of singing in the market at night‌

Montcada Just off Barcelona’s bustling Via Laietana hides Carrer Montcada, a glorious street in the Born neighbourhood, home to an eclectic mix of museums, craft shops, and bars. Tilly Brogan shares five of her favourites.
1. Picasso Museum The most famous site on Carrer Montcada, this houses one of the most extensive collections of artwork by world-renowned Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso. Opened to the public in 1963, this was the first museum dedicated to the artist’s work and remained the only one created during Picasso’s lifetime. Aside from its captivating collection and awe-inspiring artwork, The Picasso Museum gives light to the artist’s extraordinary relationship with the city of Barcelona, a place that he considered both his muse and his home. 2. Artisan souvenirs at Kitsch Kitsch is a souvenir shop with a difference, offering a range of homemade products that are perfect gifts for family and friends. Everything sold at Kitsch has been lovingly hand-crafted by the owner herself, who specialises in traditional Spanish wooden fans hand-painted with different designs. She also sells papier-mâché figures which resemble popular Picasso pieces- a much more personalised and memorable memento than those sold in the museum gift shop! Montcada, 10

4. Bubbles at El Xampanyet Named after the homemade sparkling wine that it serves, El Xampanyet has been making its mark in Barcelona’s since 1929 and is the funkiest drinking spot in town. The bar is known by its bota bags – leather bags typically used to drink wine- hanging outside, a Spanish authenticity that also continues into the bar’s selection of tapas and drinks. Despite being in the centre of the city, El Xampanyet has managed to keep its personality and give guests a true taste of a local experience. Montcada, 22
5. Museum of World Cultures Discover unknown cultures, religions, and traditions, and embark on a journey around the world at this museum. With 35 halls and around 2400 pieces exhibited over three floors, the museum offers a unique opportunity to discover artistic creations from the far-off continents of Africa, Asia, America, and Oceania. TARRAGONA
Just an hour away from Barcelona, Tarragona is the "Rome of Spain." The modern town has evolved around a nucleus of ruins from the ancient Roman civilisation; you'll see plenty of contrast between its old columns and new bars. There is so much to visit and enjoy here!
Roman Heritage Tarragona is perhaps best known for its previous incarnation as Tarraco, the Roman capital of the Iberian Peninsula. Many historic remains are exceptionally well preserved, which earned the city the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The city was first captured by the Romans in 218 BCE. They constructed an infrastructure with everything from an amphitheatre and aqueduct, to a forum with spaces for business and temples for worship, roads, and of course strongly fortified city walls to protect its perimeter. The walls themselves are considered to be the oldest remaining Roman structure outside Italy, and you can walk along some of them and catch some great views through the slits in the stone which were originally made for firing arrows. The most striking construction in town is the 26

Roman amphitheatre. Its structure is remarkably well preserved, and you can walk along the top and sit on the steps as the spectators would once have done. A stone’s throw from the amphitheatre are the remains of the Roman Circus. Its underground caverns can also be visited.

The elegant avenue of La Rambla Nova is the top retail hotspot in the city. You'll find high street brands and luxurious cafés on this main Rambla and smaller boutiques with fashion and crafts from local artisans along its side streets. Tarragona’s streets and squares have plenty of traditional restaurants and cosy bars with welcoming terraces. We especially recommend you treat yourself to freshly made ice-cream at Gelateria Sirvent, Rambla Nova, 5.
