EXPLORE MONTJUÏC The hill above Barcelona’s port overlooks the city; its lovely outdoor parks are an oasis of natural beauty, and it is home to grand architecture, museums and galleries. Montjuïc was a focal venue for Barcelona’s 1992 Olympic Games. Its name may have Catalan origins, with juic indicating a former Jewish settlement. Others argue it may have derived from the Latin Mont Jovis, named after the Roman God, Jupiter. It was used by Franco’s regime as an execution ground for political prisoners during the Civil War, and has been transformed into an attractive centre for sports and culture.

Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya

Fundació Joan Miró

Beautiful inside and out, this impressive museum has an extravagant exterior with amazing artwork to match. Situated at the foot of Montjuïc, it overlooks the former bullring which is now Las Arenas shopping centre. The gallery has an extensive range of art from sculptures to paintings, engravings, drawings and photography. Its emphasis is on Catalan art and its works date from the Romanesque period up until the 20th century.

Discover the art works by the Catalan artist, Joan Miró (1893-1983), who was born in Barcelona. He was renowned for his abstract surrealist painting, sculpture and ceramics.

Magic Fountains The fountains of the Palau Nacional look normal enough during the day, but at night the magic begins. A spectacular sound and light show turns the fountains into a chorus of water, colour and music which lights up the night sky with an impressive display. Shows take place all year round, and at 20:00 and 20:30 every Thursday, Friday and Saturday in March and at 21:00 and 21:30 in April. 20

ITO SHINSUI. TRADITION AND MODERNITY Art

The Fundació Joan Miró inaugurates a new temporary exhibition featuring the work of Ito Shinsui (1898-1972), one of the great masters of Shin-Hanga. Fira per la Terra is Barcelona's Earth Day festival. It aims to tackle the world's ecological difficulties by reminding us that everyone is responsible for making the world a better place. The fair begins at Arc de Triomf and stretches along Passeig Lluís Companys to the Ciutadella Park, lined with a variety of stalls. An artisan market includes clothes for adults and children made with sustainable materials and innovative designs. All sorts of eco-products for reducing household waste through conscious choices are offered, and it’s a good opportunity to ask about products you might not already be familiar with. The food market brings together local producers of anything from fresh fruit and vegetables to honey, dairy products and cakes. There is also a street-food section where you can choose from delicious snacks and meals to eat on the grass in the park or in one of the picnic areas. Music, visual arts and performances add to the lively ambience. Ciutadella Park www.diadelaterra.org

EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BORN Charm and tradition This district is arguably one of the most beautiful in the city. The atmosphere of El Born is both historical and trendy; be sure to explore all the way through to Cituadella Park which acts as its leafy green backdrop. You may feel like you are getting lost, but rest assured you are guaranteed to find all the best little bars and restaurants favoured by locals.
