It's sunny but not too hot, and the hordes of tourists haven't arrived yet. Scope out the volleyball sites along the seafront and get a pre-season edge on your game. Bogatell beach has some nets, and you’ll find more near the W Hotel and towards Mar Bella.
A tip is always a good way of showing your appreciation for someone's services. Cover charges are included in all bills, but leaving anything from a couple of coins change in a bar to a larger tip after a good meal is always welcomed.

HAVE YOU TRIED "ESCALIVADA" YET? Freshly made escalivada is a local specialty which melts in the mouth. It is made from smoke-grilled peppers, egg plant and onions which are mixed with olive oil and garlic and left to marinate and soak up the flavours. It is sometimes topped with anchovies and accompanied by crispy pa amb tomàquet, bread rubbed with fresh tomato and a drizzle of good quality olive oil. Delicious! 7

Protective helmets are compulsory for cyclists under the age of 16. Cyclists must use the cycle lanes; if there isn’t one, stay in the lane closest to the pavement. Using the bus lane is not permitted. Bikes can only ride on pavements that are wider than 5 metres.

Be aware that drinking alcohol in the street is illegal, and you can be fined from 30€ – 1500€ according to the severity of the disturbance. Bikinis and shirts-off is just for the beach, cover up in town. The police can fine people for buying goods from unauthorised street traders as well as the sellers themselves.

Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sounds carry up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Be aware that heels on tiles or parquet floor make a loud click which can usually be heard in the apartment below.

Keep your luggage in sight, or use a left luggage service. Make sure bags are always closed. Protect your personal belongings, especially in crowded areas such as the city centre and La Rambla. Be vigilant on public transport, especially the bus stop for the airport and on the train to the airport.

1. PASSEIG DE GRÀCIA If you are drawn to classic and chic labels, then head straight to Passeig de Gràcia. This luxurious boulevard boasts beautiful buildings and décor, including the magnificent Casa Batlló and La Pedrera.

Many of the most prestigious fashion shops and brands in Barcelona are located here, including Bulgari, Gucci, Hermès, Prada, Emporio Armani, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. If you are on a budget, or don’t want to splash out as far as a pair of Jimmy Choo stilettos, then check out the high-street stores such as Zara, Mango and H&M which you'll also find here.
2. BORN This beautiful cultural hub is an up-andcoming fashion district with plenty of independent boutiques that specialise in one-off items and contemporary fashion. Many of the most best shops are in C/ Rec, C/ dels Flassaders, and in the small streets off Rambla del Born.

This boulevard crosses the Modernist Eixample district and leads from Plaça Catalunya to Diagonal. One of the trendiest shopping streets in Barcelona, international brands and exquisite local designers present their latest offerings in its small boutiques and larger stores.
Just below Plaça Catalunya you'll find this pedestrian street which is brimming with top high street stores such as El Corte Inglés, Zara and Cortefiel. You'll also find several shoe shops and sparkles from Swarovski. It's a short stroll from here to the Cathedral, and you'll find plenty of boutiques and quirky stores in the streets of the Gothic quarter.
5. GRÀCIA Once an independent village, Gràcia still retains a strong sense of its own identity; alternative, slightly bohemian, and very Catalan. Gràcia provides the classic high street stores found throughout Barcelona, as well as more arty, funky and independent boutiques. It is popular with students and has lots of squares lined by bars and terraces.

As far back as Medieval times this neighbourhood has been a centre for trade and commerce. The cloth merchants and cotton traders are long gone; its narrow streets are now filled with all kinds of contemporary artisan shops and boutiques. Artists’ workshops nestle between the cafés and shops in the back streets of the Born. Pass next to the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, and peep into local artist Núria Duran’s atelier (Abaixadors 10). The Lomogaphy store (Rosic 3) has a funky display of pop snaps, and you can see Barcelona from a different angle through the distortion of a Lomography lens. If the queues at the Picasso Museum (Montcada 15-23) are too painfully long, or if you’re after a different art experience, you could visit the Museu Europeu d'Art Modern (Barra de Ferro, 5). This is dedicated to sculpture and contemporary figurative art, and has an impressive permanent collection.

Barcelona’s contemporary art museum opened in 1995 with a mission to offer a diverse range of artistic visions. Its permanent collection includes works by Klee, Klimt and Tàpies. Temporary exhibitions constantly challenge our ideas of contemporary art and existence.

Just an hour away from Barcelona, Tarragona is the "Rome of Spain." The modern town has evolved around a nucleus of ruins from the ancient Roman civilisation; you'll see plenty of contrast between its old columns and new bars. There is so much to visit and enjoy here!
The most striking construction in town is the Roman amphitheatre. Its structure is remarkably well preserved, and you can walk along the top and sit on the steps as the spectators would once have done. Barcelona's festivities aren't nearly as dramatic as those of Seville and other cities, but a couple of local churches and religious brotherhoods hold processions. Sant Jordi is a Catalan festival that combines the festivities of Valentine’s Day, World Book Day and the legend of Sant Jordi (Saint George) all in a single day. It is open to members of the public and hostel guests and will showcase the latest music from the world’s finest House & Techno on the last Thursday of the month. “I’m very happy to host this event,” said Nino Heinz, Food & Beverage Manager at Generator Hostel, Barcelona. “The city has a vibrant underground scene and our bar is a great zone to hang out and catch up with the latest sounds. The Generator Hostel offers a great selection of food and drinks and always attracts a charming crowd of locals and travelers alike,” he added. The event, hosted by the Barcelona Connect Nightlife team, has already gathered a bit of a following on underground music portal Resident Advisor.
