Protective helmets are compulsory for cyclists under the age of 16. Cyclists must use the cycle lanes; if there isn’t one, stay in the lane closest to the pavement. Using the bus lane is not permitted. Bikes can only ride on pavements that are wider than 5 metres.

Be aware that drinking alcohol in the street is illegal, and you can be fined from 30€ – 1500€ according to the severity of the disturbance. Bikinis and shirts-off is just for the beach, cover up in town. The police can fine people for buying goods from unauthorised street traders as well as the sellers themselves.

Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sound carries up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Make sure doors and windows are locked when you leave the apartment to prevent theft. Don't leave money or valuables in your room. Use a safe deposit box.

Keep your luggage in sight, or use a left luggage service. Make sure bags are always closed. Protect your personal belongings, especially in crowded areas such as the city centre, La Rambla, public transport and the beach. 2. BORN This beautiful cultural hub is an up-andcoming fashion district with plenty of independent boutiques that specialise in one-off items and contemporary fashion.

This boulevard crosses the Modernist Eixample district and leads from Plaça Catalunya to Diagonal. One of the trendiest shopping streets in Barcelona, international brands and exquisite local designers present their latest offerings in its small boutiques and larger stores.

STREET CANS You're probably already aware that the beer sellers who offer cans on the street are operating illegally, and both seller and buyer can be fined if stopped by the police. What you might not know is that they often store their stash down the manholes that connect with the sewers and are frequented by rats, so give them a good wipe.

PARK LIFE AT CIUTADELLA Pack a picnic and head down to the liveliest grassy spot in town, Ciutadella Park. The animal zoo is next door, and this is a human zoo where all kinds of talents come out to play. A GREEN DAY IN BARCELONA Visiting one of Europe’s most environmentally friendly cities, but don’t know where to start enjoying the green-minded lifestyle? We’ve got some suggestions for a day in Barcelona where you can relax and have fun, whilst minimising your environmental repercussions.

TAKE A TOUR There are several eco-friendly tours available to show you around all the famous and notso-famous sights of Barcelona, on foot, by bike or Segway. Runner Bean (Carme, 44), organise an Old City Tour, a walking tour that winds through the enchanting streets of the Gothic Quarter. Tours begin every day at 11:00 and 16:30, meeting in Plaça Reial. You decide the price at the end of the tour. If you prefer to get around by bike, Green Bikes (Escudellers, 48), have several routes for biking enthusiasts, including a general city tour that goes to the most popular tourist attractions for 25€. They also offer a Gaudí and Modernism tour that includes the Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, and the Palau Güell which is just off La Rambla, also for 25€. While Segways may seem a bit ridiculous at first, these zero carbon emission vehicles

can be fairly quick as well as fun. Barcelona Segway Tours (Passeig Lluis Companys, 10), offers a visit to the Gothic Quarter as well as the beaches of Barceloneta and Port Olympic. There’s also the option of a 3-hour gastronomic tour of the flavours of Barcelona. While it may not look like the “coolest” option, you may be pleasantly surprised by these rides.

"BARCELONA IS COMMITTED TO DEVELOPING ITS GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE" PARKS AND GARDENS Barcelona has a surprising amount of green spaces for such a densely populated city. Montjuïc is full of parks, gardens and nature trails, and is known as the city’s “lungs”. It can easily be reached on foot or by public transport from Plaça Espanya, or via the high-line cablecar from the port. Jewel in the crown is the Botanical Garden, which has an extensive collection of Mediterranean plants from various continents. Ciutadella Park is just behind Barceloneta,

although it’s most impressive approach is walking from the mighty Arc de Triomf, down Passeig Lluís Companys. It has a boating lake with ducks, children’s playgrounds and plenty of shaded lawn for chilling out or sharing a picnic with friends. Admire Miró’s colourful “Dona i Ocell” sculpture in the Joan Miró Park, next to Tarragona metro in the Eixample, and relax under palm oases, pine trees and pergolas. There’s a large square, children’s play area, and ping-pong tables. Enormous ceramic sculptures by Beverly Peppers undulate like giant blue waves and contrast beautifully with the lush green grass in Parc del Nord, next to the Estacion del Nord bus station.

Steeped in history, Bar del Pi is the perfect bar to experience the real Barcelona. If you are lost in the Gothic quarter… head to Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol and you will find yourself in a beautiful square looking onto the Basilica de Santa Maria del Pi, just across from La Rambla. Adjacent to the church is Bar del Pi, famed for the foundation of the Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia at the beginning of the Civil War in 1936, but also where parties from both sides of the political spectrum would meet and try to resolve issues during this time. The bar’s ambience is a natural mixture of bohemian Barcelona and Paris chic, and the design is based on a salon with a mezzanine floor and an outside terrace for sipping a cava or two and watching the world go by. The menu is simple but tasty, with a selection of freshly prepared traditional, city-style tapas, hams, sausages, sandwiches and other picapica favourites. WEEK I usually ask a Barcelona-based DJ to submit their picks, so it’s the first time in 6 years that I have selected the best fringe events orbiting the official Sónar festival. It’s a bit of minefield actually, as Sónar doesn’t recognise these events at all, and even more complicated by the fact that Sónar is in July this year, not June. Nontheless, June’s Off-Week promoters are pressing on with around 100 key events taking place from the 12th-16th June.

The Life & Death Party at Vila Habana Vila Habana is gorgeous and located on the outskirts of the city, but fairly accessible by public transport with connections to the actual site provided by the promoters. The two day event is hosted by DJ Tennis and features guest artists and DJs like Axel Boman, Chloé, Gilles Peterson, Mano Le Tough and Mind Against playing in the gardens of this Colonial, Neoclassical estate up in the hills overlooking the city.
