El Verdi Cine There’s a reason we say that once you’re in Gràcia, you’ll never have to leave, as the neighbourhood even has its own cinema! Escape from the heat and enjoy brand new blockbusters, as well as art house classics in their original language with Catalan or Spanish subtitles.

DISCOVER

CARRER DE VERDI With its pretty streets and picturesque square, Gràcia was once a separate village to the old city of Barcelona, which is now Ciutat Vella. Tilly Brogan invites you to take a stroll down Carrer de Verdi, one of the liveliest streets in the Gràcia neighbourhood, and discover her favourite local hotspots.

La Trini Also known as the restaurant next to the cinema, La Trini offers traditional French-influenced Catalan cuisine at its finest. The food is simple but delicious, showcasing the very best of Catalonia and cooked by locals whose family have been living here for longer than they can remember.

Bell Estiu Carrer de Verdi is full of independent artisan shops showcasing the very best handcrafted designs. Bell Estiu is one of my favourite jewellery spots, and creator Dèlia Ibáñez makes the trinkets in store herself using high-quality materials. Simple yet classic, Bell Estiu - Catalan for beautiful summer- represents the best of local jewellery design; I already own two sets of earrings.

La Bicicleta I first stumbled upon La Bicicleta by accident, but it has since become one of my favourite tapas spots in the whole of Gràcia. Easily recognisable by the bicycle above its door, this restaurant is perfect for those looking to enjoy tapas with a twist. Don’t miss the mini hamburgers with caramelised onions, langoustines with a parmesan cream, and snails!

Rekup & Co If you’re looking for an original souvenir from your Barcelona holiday, check out this store’s hand crafted wood products. Depending on your luggage allowance, let yourself be tempted by photo frames, wall hangings, and any other trinkets that tickle your pickle. Or just pop in to browse through its amazing creations.

Bar Canigo If you’re going to just one bar in Gràcia (tough call, I know...) make it Bar Canigo. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been there on two hands, and this place is always full. Canigo comes with no frills, just good drinks at great prices. It’s the perfect spot for an evening caña.

Kibuka Named after a traditional Japanese theatre style centred around historic deeds and moral conflicts of love, Kibuka is the top pick for spectacularly sensational sushi. Creative dishes freshly made with highest quality ingredients, and reasonably priced. This is one restaurant you don’t want to miss!

DALÍ MUSEUM & FIGUERES

Tucked away up the Costa Brava, this unassuming town situated just north of Girona would be overlooked by many, were it not for Salvador Dalí. The artist was born and raised here, and returned to live here after many years in the 1960s.

DALÍ THEATRE MUSEUM The building which Dalí transformed into his museum used to be the town's municipal theatre. It was burnt down at the end of the Civil War in 1939, but was restored and inaugurated in 1974. Even from a distance the Dalí Theatre Museum will immediately catch your eye with its enormous glass dome, pink wall encrusted with 1500 three-cornered loaves of Catalan bread and topped with giant eggs, and some incredible statues in the square outside the entrance, all offering a taste of what awaits its visitors. The museum has a complicated array of rooms around a central semicircular garden area that contains a disused Cadillac covered in ivy containing three mannequins and various snails. If visitors put a coin into the slot provided, water washes over the inside of the 26

FIGUERES MODERNISM ROUTE Like jewels in this elegant town’s tiara, Catalan Modernism is represented by seven remarkable buildings in Figueres. Architect Josep Azemar i Pont introduced the style at the turn of the 20th century with his Casa Cusí, Casa Puig-Soler and Casa Salleras, all located on the Rambla. Explore the town as you follow this route, discovering his work and that of his contemporaries.

FEATURES

SALA MONTJUÏC: OPEN-AIR CINEMA Summer has arrived in Barcelona! Jackets can stay home, sandals replace boots, and our imaginations are allowed to wander freely whilst planning travel and outdoor entertainment for the next few months. July in Barcelona's calendar is synonymous with Sala Montjuïc open-air film screenings, which nearly always sell out. This year's season runs from the 28th June- 2nd August. Picture the scene… a giant projector screens large images onto the wall of Montjuïc Castle, the soft summer air gently fills with music and hundreds of people make themselves comfortable on deckchairs and blankets, with tremendous picnics and bottles of beer and wine to be shared. What better way to enjoy some of the best films ever made?!

Highlights include Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), the exhilarating story of Freddie Mercury and Queen, with an awesome soundtrack, of course! (3rd). The Favourite (2018) dives into the early 18th century England under the questionable rule of Queen Anne. The classic Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) takes you on a riotous road trip (19th). And if you haven't yet seen the blockbuster Kill Bill (2003) be sure to catch it here. salamontjuic.org

Every screening begins with live music, thematically connected with the main feature film. This year’s variety of films takes us through cinema history from top to bottom. 29

A NIGHT AT THE OPERA:

LUISA MILLER Luisa Miller was Verdi's first mature work. Soon after, he composed his famous trilogy with Rigoletto, Il Trovatore and La Traviata. It is an intense but serene opera, based on a drama by Friedrich Schiller, one of authors most frequently chosen for adaptation by Verdi. The production is directed by Damiano Michieletto and was premiered at the Zürich Opera House in 2010 where it received excellent reviews. The action concentrates on the drama of Rodolfo and Luisa, two innocent protagonists oppressed by their authoritarian fathers. The staging is located in the era of German pre-Romanticism. It elegantly and forcefully presents the original text, adapted by the librettist Cammarano, as well as Verdi's score. This opera arrives at the Liceu with first-

rate performers, the acclaimed and highly esteemed soprano Sondra Radvanovksy and the tenor Piotr Beczala, who will share the bill with the American baritone Michael Chioldi. The remaining performances will be sung by Arturo Chacon-Cruz and Eleonora Buratto along with the great Spanish baritone JuanJesús Rodriguez. Luisa Miller is a work full of anthological moments such as the famous tenor aria "Quando le sere al placido". One of Verdi’s best romantic works awaits you at the Liceu from the 14th-17th July.

NATIONAL BALLET OF SPAIN:

TRADITION AND FUTURE, FLAMENCO AND CONTEMPORARY Zaguán and Alento, directed by Antonio Najarro, is one of the most successful shows of the National Ballet of Spain. It is based on traditional flamenco and extends towards a contemporary revision of the genre, with modernity and magic going hand in hand during an exceptional evening. This spectacular show mixes flamenco with tango and jazz in a fascinating fusion for your eyes and ears. It has been received with resounding acclaim by several Spanish theatres, as well as important theatres in France and Japan.

Fidelity to tradition and taking risks to open new paths are some of the driving forces of this show, with which the National Ballet of Spain returns to the Liceu after the success of Sorolla in 2015. The performance will only take place for four days: 31st July and 1st, 2nd & 3rd August. Don’t miss this sublime dance and rhythm show with tickets from just 10€. EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BARCELONETA & PORT OLÍMPIC Along the seafront This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona's top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, and there's a busy nightlife scene.
