Be aware that drinking alcohol in the street is illegal, and you can be fined from 30€ - 1500€ according to the severity of the disturbance. Bikinis and shirts-off is just for the beach, cover up in town. The police can fine people for buying goods from unauthorised street traders as well as the sellers themselves.

Please keep quiet between 10pm and 8am. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday! Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sounds carry up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Be aware that heels on tiles or parquet floor make a loud click which can usually be heard in the apartment below.

Don’t use any soap or shampoo at the showers by the beach. It pollutes the water, and you can be fined. Respect the coloured flags. Green means the sea is calm, yellow indicates medium hazard such as slight currents or jellyfish, and a red flag warns you not to enter the water.
Recycling Barcelona is an eco-friendly city. Keep an eye out for the coloured recycling bins nearest to your apartment:

As we all know, pickpockets get busy in crowded areas such as the metro and La Rambla, and they're fast. Leave your unnecessary documents, cards and cash somewhere safe. It's a good idea to jot down your phone's serial number; if you're prepared, the worst won't happen, right?

DRIVING BACK TO BARCELONA No trip to Barcelona would be complete without exploring outside the city and discovering nearby destinations such the mountain of Montserrat or the stunning beaches of the Costa Brava. If you're returning by car or bus, be aware that evening traffic can be heavy - and on Sunday evenings in particular there are usually epic traffic jams. If you have an evening flight, return the day before or early in the morning to avoid unnecessary stress.

If you are drawn to classic and chic labels, then head straight to Passeig de Gràcia. This luxurious boulevard boasts beautiful buildings and décor, including the magnificent Casa Batlló and La Pedrera.
This beautiful cultural hub is an up-and-coming fashion district with plenty of independent boutiques that specialise in one-off items and contemporary fashion. Many of the most best shops are in C/ Rec, C/ dels Flassaders, and in the small streets off Rambla del Born.
The quirky neighbourhood of El Raval is home to an abundance of vintage clothes shops, located mainly on C/ Tallers and C/ de la Riera Baixa. You'll find everything from faux fur, camouflage jackets, vintage shoes and bags, to all kinds of retro looks.

If you go down Carrer Ferran towards the City History Museum, you’ll get to Plaça Sant Just. This is often said to be one of the most magical places in the city due to the water that flows beneath the surface. Followers of the pre-Christian religion Mithraism used to gather here to practice their sacred rituals. This could also explain why the Romans built their stronghold here.
It's the historic final resting place of famous Catalans such as Josep Anselm Clavé and Narcís Oller, and also houses a Funeral Carriage Collection, the only one of its kind in Europe. The collection is made up of 23 original pieces which were used in funeral processions that passed through the streets of Barcelona for more than 100 years.

SALT MINES
The first spot that you should definitely visit is the Castell de Cardona. Arguably the most important medieval fortress in Catalonia, this structure is located on top of the hill overlooking the valley. Between the 11th and 15th centuries it was the residence of the Lords of Cardona, and a last line of defense for the salt warehouses.
Cardona is next to one of the most important salt mines in the world, which has now become the Salt Mountain Cultural Park. Visitors can take a tour through the old mining facilities, which reach an impressive depth of 86m. The caves are lined with salt deposits that create unusual and enticing formations.
Known as “the castle never conquered by force of arms”, the strategic and military importance of its fortifications allowed resistance against the Bourbon forces on several occasions during the War of the Spanish Succession. Because of its numerous successes as a standing point for the Catalans, it has turned into a symbol and last bastion of freedom in Catalonia.
Its most remarkable buildings date back to the 11th century and contrast with the more modern shops and restaurants that line its picturesque streets. Catalan gastronomy is renowned for combining ingredients from the nearby mountains and sea, and there are plenty of good restaurants where you can enjoy local specialties in Cardona.

TAKE A TOUR There are several eco-friendly tours available to show you around all the famous and not-sofamous sights of Barcelona, on foot, by bike or Segway. Runner Bean (Carme,44), organise an Old City Tour, a free walking tour that winds through the enchanting streets of the Gothic Quarter. Tours begin every day at 11am and 4:30pm, meeting in Plaça Reial, and the only cost is what you think the tour was worth.

If you prefer to get around by bike, Green Bikes (Escudellers, 48), have several routes for biking enthusiasts, including a general city tour that goes to the most popular tourist attractions for 25€. They also offer a Gaudí and Modernism tour that includes the Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, and the Palau Güell which is just off La Rambla, also for 25€.
Barcelona has a surprising amount of green spaces for such a densely populated city. Montjuïc is full of parks, gardens and nature trails, and is known as the city’s “lungs”. It can easily be reached on foot or by public transport from Plaça Espanya, or via the high-line cablecar from the port. Jewel in the crown is the Botanical Garden, which has an extensive collection of Mediterranean plants from various continents.
While Segways may seem a bit ridiculous at first, these zero carbon emission vehicles can be fairly quick as well as fun. Barcelona Segway Tours (Passeig Lluis Companys, 10),

Admire Miró’s colourful “Dona i Ocell” sculpture in the Joan Miró Park, next to Tarragona metro in the Eixample, and relax under palm oases, pine trees and pergolas. There’s a large square, children’s play area, and ping-pong tables. Enormous ceramic sculptures by Beverly Peppers undulate like giant blue waves and contrast beautifully with the lush green grass in Parc del Nord, next to the Estacion del Nord bus station.
One of our favourites is Amaltea (Diputació, 162), a well-established vegetarian restaurant, which been a foody favourite for decades due to its creativity and reasonable price. It has midday menus from 10,70€ and weekend/ evening set menus at just 15,30€.
VEGETARIAN AND ORGANIC RESTAURANTS Spain has a reputation for serving cured hams, chorizo, meaty tapas and seafood paella, however, Barcelona also offers a wide and increasing variety of vegan and vegetarian cuisine.

BEHIND THE FRIDGE Located in the trendy Born district, this obscure bar has a personality to match. Finding El Paradiso is a fun and tasty adventure as it is hidden behind the fridge door in an artisanal pastrami sandwich bar, which we definitely recommend that you try! Walking past the queues of people and heading straight for the fridge will definitely make you feel like part of a clandestine group. However, once you step through the door, pull back the curtains and are exposed to the ultra-chic décor and lighting, you’ll be glad to be one of the lucky few that know about it. TERRACE VIEWS At Barcelona Connect, we love a trip to this rooftop bar and we’re surprised it has managed to remain largely under the radar. Situated on the top floor of the Museum of Catalan History, 1881 Per Sagardi offers incredibly chilled summer vibes by day, with white décor underneath the Barcelona sun and a beautiful view of Port Vell and the surrounding area. By night the terrace becomes a slightly more intimate affair. The atmosphere is topped off by the DJ who plays on the terrace by day and night, adding a chic, laid back vibe. THROUGH THE WARDROBE Now for the most elusive bar on our list. With no photos online, no official website or facebook page, and opening only when the owners feel like it, this bar is hidden in almost every possible way. El Armario is the urban legend of Barcelona bars. Stories of experiences are passed down from the lucky few who have managed to stumble across it when open. It can be accessed Narnia-style by stepping through a hole in the owner’s wardrobe, which leads into a small enchanting bar with very reasonably priced drinks. The owners have done their best to make this a very novel experience, and we definitely recommend taking a stroll down through the Raval to see if it’s open. Carrer de la Riereta, 11 52
