Be aware that drinking alcohol in the street is illegal, and you can be fined from 30€ – 1500€ according to the severity of the disturbance. Bikinis and shirts-off is just for the beach, cover up in town. The police can fine people for buying goods from unauthorised street traders as well as the sellers themselves.

Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sounds carry up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Be aware that heels on tiles or parquet floor make a loud click which can usually be heard in the apartment below.

Keep your luggage in sight, or use a left luggage service. Make sure bags are always closed. Protect your personal belongings, especially in crowded areas such as the city centre and La Rambla. Be vigilant on public transport, especially the bus stop for the airport and on the train to the airport.

1. PASSEIG DE GRÀCIA If you are drawn to classic and chic labels, then head straight to Passeig de Gràcia. This luxurious boulevard boasts beautiful buildings and décor, including the magnificent Casa Batlló and La Pedrera.

Many of the most prestigious fashion shops and brands in Barcelona are located here, including Bulgari, Gucci, Hermès, Prada, Emporio Armani, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. If you are on a budget, or don’t want to splash out as far as a pair of Jimmy Choo stilettos, then check out the high-street stores such as Zara, Mango and H&M which you'll also find here.

2. BORN This beautiful cultural hub is an up-andcoming fashion district with plenty of independent boutiques that specialise in one-off items and contemporary fashion. Many of the most best shops are in C/ Rec, C/ dels Flassaders, and in the small streets off Rambla del Born.

The quirky neighbourhood of El Raval has inspired an abundance of vintage clothing shops, located mainly on C/ Tallers and C/ de la Riera Baixa. You'll find everything from faux fur, camouflage jackets, vintage shoes and bags, to all kinds of retro styles.

SALES The Three Kings have come and gone, bringing gifts for the little ones and filling the streets with a majestic parade of colour, performances and thousands of sweets. On the 7th January, the sales hit the high street and you can expect bargains galore until the end of February. A second and often third round of discounts brings prices down by as much as 70%. Keep your receipts, and check the refund policy of each store, if you have a penchant for hit-and-miss impulse buying.

4. RAMBLA DE CATALUNYA This boulevard crosses the Modernist Eixample district and leads from Plaça Catalunya to Diagonal. One of the trendiest shopping streets in Barcelona, international brands and exquisite local designers present their latest offerings in its small boutiques and larger stores.

5. GRÀCIA Once an independent village, Gràcia still retains a strong sense of its own identity; alternative, slightly bohemian, and very Catalan. It is popular with students and has lots of squares lined by bars and terraces.

This wide avenue has been recently renovated and its tree-lined pedestrian promenade is full of elegant shops. Its shopping area stretches from the top of Passeig de Gràcia to Plaça Francesc Macià and continues towards Maria Cristina and the l'illa Diagonal shopping centre.

The Gothic Quarter, or Barri Gòtic is the historic centre of the city. It is a mustvisit neighbourhood with several quiet squares where you can relax and admire its architecture and local shops. Yes, you’re spoilt for choice. Always lively by night, you’ll find plenty of good places to have a drink or go dancing. One of the main attractions is the Cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia, built in the Gothic style between the 13th and 15th centuries. The nearby Plaça Sant Jaume was once the Roman Forum of Barcelona. This square is now home to the Ajuntament and Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya administrative buildings. Carrer Ferran guides you from here to the magnificent Plaça Reial. The Basilica de Santa Maria Del Pi is also a must-see. The area around the church has a weekend market with paintings and good tapas restaurants, and the smaller side-streets are full of charming boutiques.

The triumphal arch of the city was erected for the 1888 World Fair and is a remarkable red brick structure. Step away from the arch on Passeig Sant Joan and grab a satisfying breakfast at one of the numerous cafes or bakeries that line the street.

Whether you walk around the free area or enter the paid section of the park where you can see the ornamental mosaics, lizard statue and pavilion designed, this is a must see. Street musicians are often dotted around the park, so just choose your favourite and enjoy the show. (Olot, 7)

SIGHTSEEING 14:00 Lunch at Barcelona’s most famous market, La Boqueria A feast for the eyes as much as for the stomach, this stop will be a highlight for foodies. Start with a quick walk around the market to avoid filling up at the first stalls, only to see something else you would have loved to eat later. There are options for every budget and dietary requirement, and whether you choose to sit in one of the cafés or walk and eat, everything on offer is fresh and delicious. (La Rambla, 91)

15:30 La Rambla and Plaça Reial Walking down Barcelona’s legendary street is, of course, a must. Filled with street vendors, artists, and restaurants, there is plenty to see here. Amble down towards Plaça Reial at your leisure and absorb the ambience of one of the most beautiful squares in the city.

18:00 Casa Batlló and Casa Milà City landmarks are beautiful by night, and these two houses designed by Gaudí are no exception. Five minutes’ walk from each other, their shapes are inspired by myth and nature. Both were commissioned by wealthy families at the beginning of the 20th century, and both showcase Gaudí's creativity. Open every day, there is no excuse for skipping this stop. 20:30-21:00 Plaça Espanya: The National Museum of Art of Catalonia and The Magic Fountain One of the most spectacular views of Barcelona can be found along the boulevard leading from Plaça Espanya to the National Museum of Art of Catalona. PYRENEES As the second most mountainous country in Europe, Spain has some excellent ski resorts. Whether it’s skiing, snowboarding, big-foot or sledging, you can enjoy it all at these easily accessible spots near Barcelona. VALL DE NURIA

LA MOLINA

The valley of Vall de Nuria comes down from the crest of the Pyrenees in the province of Girona. This is a haven that you can escape to all year round, and in winter it is more than equipped for a great skiing holiday. It has a total of 11 alpine ski slopes: 3 green, 3 blue, 3 red and 2 black. Although there is no road access to the valley it’s easy to reach by train, so is perfect for a day trip. It has great facilities for beginners, pros and families, including a ski school, equipment hire, snow parks, and medical services.

This popular ski destination near Barcelona is reputed to be the oldest resort in Spain, and is the closest to Barcelona. It is divided into 4 different ski areas, with a total of 53 pistes of different levels from green to black and 16 lifts. There is a self-timing kilometre speed run for those up to the challenge, and any boarder who has mastered the “staying upright” technique can show of their skills and tricks at the Snow Park 100m superpipe. Much entertainment is also guaranteed for the onlookers. Other activities on offer include alpine skiing, husky sledging and circuit sledging.

Non-skiers can enjoy the snow with activities like cross country skiing, sledging and snowshoe outings.

Get the train from Barcelona Sants to Ribes de Freser, then rack rail (cremallera) to the slopes of Vall de Nuria. You can also get there by bus.

A direct train goes from Sants to La Molina, and a connecting bus takes you to the slopes. The bus company Sagales also run a service which combines transport and ski pass.

MASELLA The ski resort of Masella, near La Molina has 64 pistes covering 74km of slopes. These include 9 green supereasy slopes, 9 black slopes for the brave and foolish, and the rest are inbetween. When hearing the word Rambla, most of us think of the famous boulevard in the heart of Barcelona. Starting at Plaça Catalunya and leading down to Port Vell, this is most transited pedestrian street in the city. The word “rambla” is thought to have derived from the Arabic “ramla,” meaning dry river bed. Rainwater used to be channelled along the sides of the raised pedestrian walkway. Other Ramblas can also be found in the city and are lined with bars, shops, and restaurants. These streets are ideal if you are looking for an evening’s entertainment, without the crowds of the main Ramblas.

SANTA EULÀLIA Traditional

Is it fair to wonder whether Barcelona has two patron saints to squeeze yet another holiday into the annual agenda? Back in the 3rd century AD Eulàlia was brutally murdered and martyred as a young child for not refuting her religion. Her statue looks down from the top of Barcelona Cathedral onto the square, which hosts an artisan market. A myriad of shows, dances and folkloric interventions take place during these festive days. Highlights include the human castles in Plaça St Jaume. More human castles reach for the skies in the same square on Sunday afternoon.
