VISIT BARCELONA IN A DAY One of the most popular destinations for holiday makers in Europe, Barcelona offers an ideal city break for a quick getaway from the routine of everyday life. The city’s top notch culture and gastronomy makes this an ideal weekend destination. However, short stays often come with the pressure of making the most of every moment. This can be a daunting task, but worry not as our itinerary below will allow you to see the main attractions in one day, leaving the rest of your time free for relaxing and enjoying the tapas. Be warned however: this tour is not for the faint hearted, and there is a lot of walking involved.

9:00 Arc de Triomf and breakfast Located next to the metro station with the same name, the Arc de Triomf is a perfect place to start. The triumphal arch of the city was erected for the 1888 World Fair and is a remarkable red brick structure. Step away from the arch on Passeig Sant Joan and grab a satisfying breakfast at one of the numerous cafes or bakeries that line the street.

10:30 Sagrada Família After a walk that will allow you to see how Barcelona’s residents really live, the Sagrada Família never fails to amaze. Barcelona’s most 18

famous landmark was designed by Antoni Gaudí. It has been under construction since 1882, and the anticipated date for completion is 2026. Open to visitors, this structure is as remarkable inside as it is outside. Buying tickets in advance is recommended as waiting times can get very long, even in winter. (Plaça Sagrada Família)

"BUY TICKETS ONLINE AND AVOID THE LONG QUEUES" 12:30 Park Güell Another Gaudí marvel, this park gives a delightful bird’s eye view of the city. Whether you walk around the free area or enter the paid section of the park where you can see the ornamental mosaics, lizard statue and pavilion designed, this is a must see. Street musicians are often dotted around the park, so just choose your favourite and enjoy the show. (Olot, 7)

SIGHTSEEING 14:00 Lunch at Barcelona’s most famous market, La Boqueria A feast for the eyes as much as for the stomach, this stop will be a highlight for foodies. Start with a quick walk around the market to avoid filling up at the first stalls, only to see something else you would have loved to eat later. There are options for every budget and dietary requirement, and whether you choose to sit in one of the cafés or walk and eat, everything on offer is fresh and delicious. (La Rambla, 91)

15:30 La Rambla and Plaça Reial Walking down Barcelona’s legendary street is, of course, a must. Filled with street vendors, artists, and restaurants, there is plenty to see here. Amble down towards Plaça Reial at your leisure and absorb the ambience of one of the most beautiful squares in the city.

16:30-17:00 Coffee on the sea front A 15 minute walk will take you to Port Vell. Numerous bars and cafés line the beach promenade, offering the perfect place to enjoy the calm of the sea while sipping a warm cup

of coffee or a refreshing glass of sangría.

18:00 Casa Batlló and Casa Milà City landmarks are beautiful by night, and these two houses designed by Gaudí are no exception. Five minutes’ walk from each other, their shapes are inspired by myth and nature. Both were commissioned by wealthy families at the beginning of the 20th century, and both showcase Gaudí's creativity. Open every day, there is no excuse for skipping this stop. Visit inside, or admire the façades. (Casa Batlló: Passeig de Gràcia, 43; Casa Milà: Provença, 261-265)

20:30-21:00 Plaça Espanya: The National Museum of Art of Catalonia and The Magic Fountain One of the most spectacular views of Barcelona can be found along the boulevard leading from Plaça Espanya to the National Museum of Art of Catalona. Numerous fountains and waterfalls liven up the walk, whilst the top of this walk offers great views of the square below. Alexandra Constantine

ENCANTS FLEA MARKET

MOJITOS AT THE MINT

This is one of Barcelona’s most iconic markets, dating back to the 14th century. Easily accessible, it's next to the metro station Glòries on Line 1, by Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes. As Barcelona’s biggest and oldest flea market and the city's only permanent one, El Encants Vells has a lot to offer. Its vintage items and household oddities are sure to make an unusual souvenir.

From the owners of the acclaimed Lime House and Rubi, The Mint delivers the same high standard mojitos, famously made with lashings of rum, crushed mint and lime, and a definite lack of soda water. Not for the faint hearted, one mojito will have you well on the way to feeling sprightly and two will leave you ready to paint the town red. A welcoming and sociable international venue.

Luxury A Taste of

There are plenty of elegant cafés which specialise in serving sweet treats. Barcelona has a well established tradition for chocolate, cakes and sweets. Here are some of our favourite spots for an indulgent break. 1. Mauri

4. Natcha

This classic café dates back to 1929 and is a great space to stop whilst shopping along the nearby Passeig de Gràcia. Delicate pastries, elaborate marzipan and excellent cakes and chocolates follow well established recipes.

This uptown patisserie and café is a chocolate lover’s dream come true. Wide cabinets display creative cakes, elaborate treats and artisan chocolates.

Rambla de Catalunya, 102

2. Escribà Sophisticated and elaborate cakes with layers of chocolate, soft fruit fillings and expertly blended creams. Their own range of chocolates include creative mixes of flavours and textures. La Rambla, 83, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, 546 and L’Illa Diagonal Shopping Centre

3. Bombons Blasi Enjoy an unparalleled selection of artisan chocolates prepared by Xavier Cordomí, the 4th generation “xocolater” to run this family business. Don’t miss the “Bombó Venecià”, dark chocolate filled with mascarpone praline and fruits-of-theforest jam. Alfons XII, 26 and Corsega, 218 28

BARCELONA´S OTHER RAMBLAS

When hearing the word Rambla, most of us think of the famous boulevard in the heart of Barcelona. Starting at Plaça Catalunya and leading down to Port Vell, this is most transited pedestrian street in the city. The word “rambla” is thought to have derived from the Arabic “ramla,” meaning dry river bed. Rainwater used to be channelled along the sides of the raised pedestrian walkway. Other Ramblas can also be found in the city and are lined with bars, shops, and restaurants. These streets are ideal if you are looking for an evening’s entertainment, without the crowds of the main Ramblas.

RAMBLA DEL POBLENOU The best way to take in the atmosphere of this

street is by visiting a good local establishment and enjoying a glass of wine and some tapas while people watching. There is no better spot to do that than at El Tio Che (Rambla del Poblenou, 44-46). Open for almost 100 years, this is a regular haunt for its local residents. Its simple but delicious savoury and sweet snacks, ice creams and drinks are always a winner. Go for the retro vibe, great people and delicious food.

RAMBLA DEL RAVAL Some consider Raval to be a controversial barrio as it used to house the red light district, so visiting this area will give a feel for the city's grittier side. Raval is home to many of the city's most interesting alternative arts and cultural

associations which host live music, spoken word nights, performance, comedy and art exhibitions. The culturally diverse Raval neighbourhood has many international restaurants and you'll find plenty along its Rambla. It was only inaugurated in 1995, making it the most recently created Rambla in Barcelona. Urban engineers aimed to create better traffic flow from the adjoining narrow streets and a central area where public events, fairs, and markets could be set up. Don’t miss the famous cat sculpture by the Colombian sculptor Fernando Botero which is located at the end of the street. Snapping a selfie with this giant cat is a must for your holiday album.

be prepared to spend a little bit more here, however! Those looking for a more cultural experience can visit the elegant Galeria Ignacio de Lassaletta at number 47 for exquisite art exhibitions which are open to the public.

EACH RAMBLA HAS ITS OWN CHARACTERISTIC AMBIENCE AND STYLE

RAMBLA DE CATALUNYA The most fashionable of our line-up, Rambla de Catalunya is one of the most frequented areas of the Eixample district. Over 1km in length, the street runs parallel to another street known for its high-end appeal, Passeig de Gràcia, also lined with trendy bars and clothing boutiques. The choice for food and drink is abundant in its upmarket establishments. Do

CIRC RALUY Circus

The Raluy circus has been coming to Barcelona for the last 17 years, offering a classic circus experience with a different twist every time. The clowns have red noses and cry huge crocodile tears, the tightrope walkers make you hold your breath, and the acrobats' gravity-defying stunts leave you searching for invisible wires that probably aren't there. Marvel at the "human cannonball", laugh at the self-deprecating humour of the clowns, appreciate the dexterity of the jugglers, and be prepared for some modern circus sketches involving a lazer light show. This new show includes international performers and is fun for all the family. Port Vell, Moll de la Fusta. www.raluy.com

SANTA EULÀLIA Traditional

Is it fair to wonder whether Barcelona has two patron saints to squeeze yet another holiday into the annual agenda? Back in the 3rd century AD Eulàlia was brutally murdered and martyred as a young child for not refuting her religion. Her statue looks down from the top of Barcelona Cathedral onto the square, which hosts an artisan market. A myriad of shows, dances and folkloric interventions take place during these festive days. Highlights include the human castles in Plaça St Jaume. More human castles reach for the skies in the same square on Sunday afternoon. Also on Sunday, the traditional gegants of Ciutat Vella, large sculptures that tower above the shoulders of their bearers, take a twirl in Plaça Reial. One of the most dramatic events will be the correfoc fire-run route which departs from opposite the Cathedral at in the evening. Immerse yourself in the action!
