CASA VICENS GAUDÍ Casa Vicens Gaudí is the first masterpiece by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926). The young and talented Gaudí constructed this house in the Gràcia neighbourhood between 1883 and 1885 for the Vicens family. It is recognised as a wonderful work of art combining diverse influences, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 2005.

his colleagues applied papier mâché on the ceiling of the dining room and on the walls of the smoking room, the most famous room in Casa Vicens.

The tour of Casa Vicens begins in the cozy garden where you can taste the gastronomic delights of the Hofmann Hotel School. It's from the patio that you'll discover the true façade of the house, facing towards the garden which originally had a large waterfall and ARCHITECTURE a chapel dedicated to Santa Rita. MADE BY Unfortunately these no longer NATURE exist as the land was claimed by urban development in the sought after Gràcia neighbourhood.

A great variety of artistic techniques are present in this building. There is an intensive use of ceramics, such as the exterior tiles with carnation prints, a flower that Gaudí found on the site and incorporated as a key decorative element of this building. You can also see magnificent wrought iron work and the intense use of the sgraffito pottery technique in all the rooms which have plant motifs. However, the greatest surprise is perhaps the use of paper. Gaudí and 18

CASA VICENS GAUDÍ OFFERS OPEN VISITS AND GUIDED TOURS EVERY DAY

The visit continues on the second floor where the bedrooms, bathroom and temporary exhibition hall are located. On the third floor you can discover the history of the house through its permanent exhibition of models. A final staircase leads to the first transitable roof created by Gaudí, which preceeded the majestic roofs of La Pedrera and Casa Batlló. The trip ends at the bottom floor of the building where there is a video that explains the process of restoration and rehabilitation of the house with the aim of returning to its origin: to the house which was completed by Gaudí in 1885. This unique architectural jewel can be best summed up with the observation that it is truly "architecture made by nature", since wherever

you look inside this house you will find plant motifs. Casa Vicens Gaudí offers open visits, guided tours in Spanish, Catalan, English, French and Italian, and interactive guided tours "The essences of Casa Vicens" and "Summer Vicens", which includes an open visit to the house and sweet or savoury appetizer from the Hofmann Catering School in the garden.

Check online for the full line-up and agenda. Traditional events are definitely not to be missed. The unmistakably pagan correfoc- “fire-run” is a highlight, with diables, or devils dancing through the streets brandishing fireworks that spin around a long pole, showering sparks in all directions. Stand well back if you're not wearing long sleeves. Tribal drumming accompanies the parade as it winds its way through the streets. Look out for the fire-breathing dragons that take part in the action. Gràcia’s own dragon, called “Gaudiamos”, is a large replica of the famous Gaudí dragon statue found in the ornamental staircase of the Park Güell. If you or a friend have a balcony overlooking the correfoc route, start the night there. Human castles reach up to the skies in Plaça Rius i Taulet. A triumph of teamwork and trust, each human castle is created by intrepid teams who climb to stand on each other’s shoulders, topped by a brave little child who reaches the top, momentarily waves, and scrambles back down. Some of the most impressive towers created to date have been eight and even nine storeys high. Traditional pipe music begins when the team leader considers the tower base to be stable, and they continue to build upwards. If you’re in Barcelona during the Gràcia festival consider yourself lucky and dive right in. festamajordegracia.cat 29

Busfood - Parc del Fòrum Busfood has featured in Connect every month this summer and August is no exception. This was once the Roman town of Barcino, and you'll find parts of the old Roman wall, tombs, and even columns from the Temple of Augustus. EIXAMPLE Home of Modernism The first thing you'll notice is this district's distinctive grid structure with roads that cross in diamond-shaped blocks. The Eixample was built between 1850-1910 and is renowned for its many Modernist buildings created by different architects. It is a busy commercial area, with elegant shops, trendy restaurants and comfortable hotels. You'll find an area nicknamed the “Gayxample,” for its gay community and nightlife.

BARCELONETA & PORT OLÍMPIC Along the seafront This seafront area was rebuilt for the 1992 Olympic Games and has since become one of Barcelona's top visitor destinations. Take a walk along the seafront promenade and see the sailing boats in the port below. There are many seafood restaurants and lounge bars with terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, and there's a busy nightlife scene.
