Bikinis and shirts-off is just for the beach, cover up in town. The police can fine people for buying goods from unauthorised street traders as well as the sellers themselves.

Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sound carries up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. HAVE YOU TRIED "ESCALIVADA" YET? Freshly made escalivada is a local specialty which melts in the mouth. It is made from smoke-grilled peppers, eggplant and onions which are mixed with olive oil and garlic and left to marinate and soak up the flavours. TOP SUMMER REFRESHMENTS During the hot summer months it’s important to keep cool with plenty of liquid refreshments, and of course there are drinks for every occasion. Here are a few of our favourites, in Catalan and Spanish.

It might be a touristy cliché, but no trip to Spain is complete without a glass (or pitcher!) of this classic cocktail. This combination of wine, spirits, chopped fruit, soda and ice can be found at nearly every restaurant and bar in the city. Although it is generally made with a red wine base, it can also be served with rosé, white wine or cava.

Whilst Spain is renowned for its wine culture, beer is another drink of choice. For a lighter and more refreshing alternative, ask for a clara, which is one part beer and one part soda water or lemonade. This shandy mix is made with draught beers in any bar, and also available ready-mixed in cans.

2. ORXATA/HORCHATA This unique and deliciously refreshing concoction made from tiger nuts originated in the Valencia region. The sweetness and slightly bitter aftertaste are simply delicious. A recommended place to enjoy this at its best is Orxatería Sirvent, founded in 1920 (Parlament, 56. Sant Antoni.)

3. GRANISSAT/GRANIZADO These icy-cold, semi-frozen “slushies” come in various flavours and go down perfectly under the strong Barcelona sun. Lemon granissat is most classic, although mint or coffee hit the spot for an instant pickme-up. Look out for the granissat stands on the counter of ice-cream parlours or cafés.

5. CAFÈ AMB GEL/CAFÉ CON HIELO To satisfy that caffeine craving while also cooling down, try an iced coffee. This cold brew can be served black or with milk and sugar. Be sure to check out the local cafés to ease yourself into those early mornings.

SALVADOR DALÍ'S HOUSE

Cadaqués was a favourite resort of both Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, who were attracted to the incredible scenery of this sleepy town. Spend just a few minutes in this former fishing village and it is not hard to see why it is loved by so many and appreciated by artists of such prestige. The crystal clear waters dance with an incredible light and a sea breeze accompanies the hot sun. It remains a favourite spot for artists and weekenders from Barcelona and nearby towns.

Salvador Dalí was one of the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century. He was known and loved for his flamboyant personality as well as for his iconic paintings. The house he lived in, just around the bay at Port Lligat on the Cap de Creus, has been preserved as a museum. Dalí is said to have been drawn by the location's landscape, light and remoteness. He reconstructed its inner spaces during the 40 years he lived there, creating a quirky and unique ambience.

Although its small population makes for a quiet town during most of the year, this number grows dramatically during the summer months. Despite its popularity among tourists, the town has managed to retain its charm and authenticity. There are plenty of restaurants and bars where you can taste the local specialties and enjoy beautiful sea views. Keep an eye out for the artisan craft shops for original and stylish souvenirs.

CAP DE CREUS The Cap de Creus is a nature reserve, marked by the eastern end of the Pyrenees. There are a number of hiking trails both north and south of the peninsula with incredible views across the bay to France. Stand well back if you're not wearing long sleeves. Tribal drumming accompanies the parade as it winds its way through the streets. Look out for the fire-breathing dragons that take part in the action. Gràcia’s own dragon, called “Gaudiamos”, is a large replica of the famous Gaudí dragon statue found in the ornamental staircase of the Park Güell. If you or a friend have a balcony overlooking the correfoc route, start the night there. Human castles reach up to the skies in Plaça Rius i Taulet. A triumph of teamwork and trust, each human castle is created by intrepid teams who climb to stand on each other’s shoulders, topped by a brave little child who reaches the top, momentarily waves, and scrambles back down. Some of the most impressive towers created to date have been eight and even nine storeys high. Traditional pipe music begins when the team leader considers the tower base to be stable, and they continue to build upwards.
