BARCELONA'S PUBLIC LAWS Cycling in the city

· · ·

Protective helmets are compulsory for cyclists under the age of 16. Cyclists must use the cycle lanes; if there isn’t one, stay in the lane closest to the pavement. Using the bus lane is not permitted. Bikes can only ride on pavements that are wider than 5 metres.

In the street

· · · 8

BARCELONA CONNECT

Be aware that drinking alcohol in the street is illegal, and you can be fined from 30€ - 1500€ according to the severity of the disturbance. Bikinis and shirts-off is just for the beach, cover up in town. The police can fine people for buying goods from unauthorised street traders as well as the sellers themselves.

INFO

In your apartment

· · ·

Please keep quiet between 22:00 and 8:00. Your neighbours will appreciate this, as they are not on holiday. Lower your voices as soon as you enter the building as sounds carry up the stairs, and some people may also have the window open. Be aware that heels on tiles or parquet floor make a loud click which can usually be heard in the apartment below.

At the beach

· ·

Don’t use any soap or shampoo at the showers by the beach. It pollutes the water, and you can be fined. Respect the coloured flags. Green means the sea is calm, yellow indicates medium hazard such as slight currents or jellyfish, and a red flag warns you not to enter the water.

The walls of this iconic establishment are mute testimonies to the artistic, social and political developments that have come to define the identity of Barcelona: from passion for the works of Wagner, to the 1893 anarchist bombing and the fire of 1994 that mobilized the whole society and the political class. Its performances with the best contemporary classical singers and orchestras attract visitors and locals all year round. However, for an insight into its fascinating history and cultural significance, you’re recommended to take an Express Tour. Visits take place every day and are available in Catalan, Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, Russian, Chinese and Japanese.

You’ll be forgiven if the magnificence of the Auditorium takes your breath away. It is an exact replica of the impressive original horseshoeshaped concert hall that was designed by the architect Miquel Garriga i Roca in 1847, and which was rebuilt twice after suffering severe damage. TOPER INSIPDS! TI

EXPLORING THE GOTHIC QUARTER

1. PICASSO'S DESIGNS Thousands of visitors gather daily in the square by Barcelona Cathedral, looking up at its Gothic spires. If you turn around, you’ll notice this building on the corner. The exterior wall of the Collegi D’Arquitects de Barcelona (Architectural Society) has large friezes based on drawings by Picasso. There’s also a magnificent library of architecture books inside.

2. PLAÇA DE LA MERCÈ A hidden square, packed with charm and easy to find as it is located just off La Rambla. It is dominated by the Basílica de la Mercè, an impressive structure with a large statue of the Virgin Mary peering down into the square. There are several cafés with pleasant terraces where you can soak up the sun and enjoy fresh juices and other refreshments, not to mention countless other lively bars along Carrer Ample.

3. JEWISH HISTORY The Medieval quarter of El Call, meaning “narrow street”, was home to the city’s Jewish community in the 14th century and had everything they needed for life according to Jewish traditions. You can visit one of the oldest synagogues in Europe, admire the old street lamps and explore its antique shops, cosy tea rooms and tavern-like bars with bare stone wall interiors.

SIGHTSEEING 4. LA BAIXADA DE SANTA EULÀLIA The street’s name means “Saint Eulàlia’s descent.” This 13 year old girl was tortured horrifically when she refused to recant her Christianity in the 3rd century BCE. Legend tells that she was shut in a barrel with knives and glass, and rolled down this very street before being crucified and eventually decapitated. There is a small statue in her honour on the street corner, and the 13 white geese in the Cathedral symbolize the young martyr’s age.

5. CASTLES IN THE SKY

A stainless steel modern art sculpture in Plaça de Sant Miquel reaches 12m high and pays homage to the Catalan tradition of human castles. This breathtaking triumph of strength, agility and teamwork is expressed as casteller groups build towers of up to 8 storeys high during local festivals throughout Catalonia.

BEACHES NEAR BARCELONA Whilst our stretch of urban beaches win hands down for convenience, as soon as you factor in details such as natural sand, less crowds, cleaner water and a respite from the incessant vendors peddling cold drinks, massages and souvenirs, you’ll discover there are many better options nearby. Catalonia’s coastline has an incredible 114 blue flag beaches; here are a few of our favourite day-trip destinations, all easily accessible by train. All train times below are from Sants, but check the timetable to see if you have a closer stop.

Costa Dorada Castelldefels The wide open beaches of Castelldefels with their soft sand and convenient watersports facilities are popular with Barcelona's local residents who want to get away (but not too far away!) from the city. Cultural activities such as concerts and performances are regularly organised along the seafront promenade. R2 (20 mins)

Garraf Picturesque and quaint, this beach is located between Castelldefels and Sitges and is ecclosed by the Garraf Natural Park. Its cute beach huts and rocky surroundings create a 40

special atmosphere. It is especially popular with local families, and there aren't any bars on the beach so remember to bring your own supplies. R2 (29 mins)

Sitges The once fishing village of Sitges is just 30 minutes south of Barcelona. This fun-loving town has a vivacious summer ambience and 17 golden beaches, which, along with its charming whitewashed buildings, make for an ideal day trip. It's worth walking those extra few minutes away from the town to reach the quieter beaches as the town's seafront is busy. R2 (35 mins)

Costa Maresme Ocata With over one and a half kilometres of sand, this is an ideal spot if you’re into beach games. Whether it’s frisbee, five-a-side football or tennis you’re sure to find plenty of space to enjoy even the most riotous games without disturbing anyone. Evening cultural and leisure activities are organised in the nearby stretch of beach that borders Masnou. R2 (35 mins)

Just 2km from the town of Blanes, Cala de Sant Francesc beach cove has the crystal-clear waters and surrounding pine trees typical of the Costa Brava. This dazzling hangout is a real gem and perhaps one of the loveliest beaches in Catalonia. It’s the first resort on this picturesque coast and the only one you can reach by train. THE ESSENTIAL SUMMER PARTY:

FESTA MAJOR DE GRÀCIA Over a million people are expected join the fun that descends on the Gràcia neighbourhood from the 15th-21st August, for one of Barcelona's biggest and most colourful annual events. More than 20 streets and squares are transformed into magical outdoor venues for 600+ different performances and activities, with a mind-boggling agenda that includes Catalan traditions, plenty of live music and spectacular street art. Children can enjoy workshops, puppet shows and interactive entertainment. The community element remains strong; vermouth tastings attract an older crowd, who also set up tables for their own meals in the street, and dance sultry boleros and rumbas until late into the night. Fiesta is a way of life in Spain. The mild climate and community oriented lifestyle lend themselves to local celebrations throughout the year. Every town in Catalonia and every district of Barcelona organise their own fiesta major- the big annual festival. Locals spend all year preparing for this spectacular event in Gràcia. The first impression when stepping into the streets can only be astonishment at the care, attention and creativity that is lovingly poured into its many decorations. Artwork is suspended along the length and breadth of the streets, huge papier maché models appear everywhere, recycled materials take on a new 46

lease of life as robots, jellyfish and hedgehogs, and balconies are awash with flowers. Each participating street competes for the coveted awards in different categories, with streets like Verdi and Tordera consistently scooping a prize. Some of the most entertaining themes in recent years have included futuristic walkways with giant polystyrene robots, underwater coves with seaweed and shells dangling from above, and an eccentric PacMan game.

COLOURFUL STREET DECORATIONS, VIBRANT TRADITIONS AND ROCKIN' LIVE MUSIC IN GRÀCIA

As the evening unfolds it’s all about the music, with stages hosting a varied programme of live bands and DJs. The busiest stages in previous years have been in Plaça Revolució, Plaça del Sol, and Plaça de la Virreina, with acts ranging from Catalan indie rock to 8 piece Latino ensembles and DJs feeding rumbas, rockabilly and reggae to an up-for-it crowd. Check online for the full line-up and agenda. Traditional events are definitely not to be missed. The unmistakably pagan correfoc-

WHAT'S ON

“fire-run” - is a highlight, with diables, or devils dancing through the streets brandishing fireworks that spin around a long pole, showering sparks in all directions. Stand well back if you're not wearing long sleeves. Tribal drumming accompanies the parade as it winds its way through the streets. Look out for the fire-breathing dragons that take part in the action. Gràcia’s own dragon, called “Gaudiamos”, is a large replica of the famous Gaudí dragon statue found in the ornamental staircase of the Park Güell. If you or a friend have a balcony overlooking the correfoc route, start the night there.

Human castles reach up to the skies in Plaça Rius i Taulet. A triumph of teamwork and trust, each human castle is created by intrepid teams who climb to stand on each other’s shoulders, topped by a brave little child who reaches the top, momentarily waves, and scrambles back down. Some of the most impressive towers created to date have been eight and even nine storeys high. Traditional pipe music begins when the team leader considers the tower base to be stable, and they continue to build upwards.
