Have you heard the legend that surrounds the Canaletes fountain, at the top of the Rambla? Aside from being a handy spot for washing the fresh raspberries you might have bought at the Boqueria, it's said that drinking from this fountain means you’ll come back to Barcelona.

Colourful exotic fruits are piled up next to seasonal specialties, and the market stalls abound with a symphony of delicious foods; sweets and nuts, fresh fish, cheese, and delicatessen products. If you get there before closing time at 20:30 you'll be offered some incredible prices, especially for freshly cut fruit and smoothies that can't be kept for the next day. 3 for 1 anyone? Yes please!

Co R nt om em an po To ra mb ry s Tr & en ds Did someone say dragon?

You may have found yourself wondering why there is a Chinese art deco dragon hanging on the edge of La Rambla 82, near the Miró street mosaic. It used to advertise an umbrella shop that was located here at the height of the "Japonisme" movement in the 1860s.

open-air cinema You can find free screenings of short films, documentaries and feature length movies around the city, especially accompanying the various film festivals in Barcelona. The CCCB (C/ Montalegre 5) organises its own festival, Gandules, showing short films and documentaries for free in its courtyard from the 5th-25th August.

sports & leisure If you're the sporty type, why not take a jog along the sea front? Once you have reached as far as Frank Gehry's "Golden Fish" in Port Olympic you will notice some volleyball nets and static gym equipment which is free for public use. There are also ping pong tables and places to play a spot of boules all over the city, including along the seafront.

sun, sand & sea On the other hand, if working out definitely doesn't make it onto your holiday list, then Barcelona's many miles of beautiful beaches are just waiting to be sunbathed on. The further away from Barceloneta, the less crowded they are, so it’s worth walking that extra 20 minutes towards the Fòrum, or taking the yellow line to Selva de Mar.

MONTSERRAT The mountain of Montserrat is considered to be one of the most sacred places in Catalunya, attracting thousands of pilgrims and visitors every year. Fifty million years ago its distinctive sedimentary rock formation lay at the bottom of the sea. If you only have time for one day trip near of Barcelona, this has got to be it!

hiking trails

A brief history. The monastery dates back to an early hermitage of the Virgin Mary from 888. It became an independent abbey in 1409, and its splendour grew in Gothic and Renaissance times.

Montserrat Natural Park has countless hiking trails. Longer ones lead from villages below such as Collbató to the highest peak of Sant Jeroni, at 1236m. You could also visit the hermitages of Sant Joan and Sant Onofre, or take the funicular above the monastery and enjoy a gentle walk.

Spirituality and culture. It has always been home to a community of Benedictine monks; 67 currently live here. It has been an important centre for culture and music since the 18th century. La Moreneta. Much controversy surrounds the origins and symbolic significance of this iconic statue of a Black Virgin Mary and child. Leonardo's rocks? The Catalan historian José Luis Espejo proposes that during his “missing years” of 1481-1483 Leonardo da Vinci was in fact hiding here. Look closely at the scenery in works such as “The Madonna of the Rocks”...

festa major de gràcia

This is one of Barcelona's biggest and most colourful annual events, attracting over a million people. Over 20 streets and squares in Gràcia are transformed into magical outdoor venues for hundreds of different performances, in a unique fusion of Catalan traditions, live music, and spectacular street art. The first impression when you step into the streets of Gràcia can only be astonishment at the care, attention and creativity that is lovingly poured into its street decorations. Artwork is suspended the length and breadth of the streets, recycled materials take on a new lease of life as robots, jellyfish and hedgehogs, and balconies are awash with flowers. The Festa Major provides a detailed program of events. Children can enjoy workshops, puppet shows and other entertainment. The community element remains strong; local elders gather for vermouth tastings and dance sultry boleros and rumbas until late into the night. As the evening unfolds it’s all about the music, with stages hosting a varied programme of live bands and DJs. Traditional events, such as the castellers human castles, and correfoc fire runs also take place. Look out for the fire breathing dragons! Gràcia district M Fontana festamajordegracia.cat

Ice Tea Bar A new summer sensation is sweeping Barcelona –Refrescatea are keeping the locals and tourists cool with their deliciously refreshing natural handmade ice tea drinks. We catch up with the mastermind behind this new concept, Philipp Heller, in his new bar in the Gothic district. What inspired these first ice tea bars? The idea came from Bubble Tea. There was a big boom but then they failed because their drinks contain a lot of sugar and artificial ingredients. Our concept is similar, but it’s healthy. People like choosing their flavours, mixing ingredients and having it prepared and nicely packaged in front of them. What's in a Refrescatea? Fresh ingredients, without any artificial colourings or flavourings. There's a green tea base, and we add fresh fruit - peach, mango, cranberry, passion fruit, fresh herbs, and purified water. The plastic sealed lids are really handy, how does that work? We have a sealing machine which sticks the plastic over the cup, so you can easily carry it to the beach or wherever. Is tea becoming more popular in Spain? I haven't noticed, but there's definitely a big trend towards healthy eating. People don't go to places like McDonald's so often. There are more places that sell healthy snacks. A lot of people ask us for sugar-free teas; we only use fructose, and many are just naturally sweet.

What are the biggest compliments you've received since you started here? We've had people coming out of the bar shouting “que bueno!” But what's even better is when they come back. We give out a card and stamp it with each drink, and often people hand in a completed card stamped ten times in a week! How did you decide where to open the Refresecatea bars? I had it clear that I wanted them in a tourist area, and was lucky. I looked for a long time, then this one came up on the corner of Plaça George Orwell, which is perfect. A lot of tourists come by here, but it’s always busy with locals too. What are your plans for the future? I’m setting up franchising opportunities, and would also like to establish more bars around Barcelona, although that depends on the location. Somewhere like Carrer Ferran or La Rambla would work really well, but rent is so high. I saw a place in Carrer Portaferrissa but they wanted 10,000€ per month, plus a huge deposit. Refresh yourself at Refrescatea! C/ Escudellers 56 (Gothic district) C/ Carders 25 (Born)
