Cuandotenía ocho años, en Ciudad de Guatemala, Luis VonAhn soñaba con un Nintendo. Sin embargo, su mamá lo sorprendió con un regaló que le cambiaría la vida parasiempre:una computadora. Sin saberlo, este fue el primer paso paracrear los captchasy Duolingo.

“Mimamá siempre ha estado ahí. El hecho de que me comprarauna computadora cambió mi vida. Siempre hizo todo paraque fuera alas mejores escuelasyvenirme ala universidad aEstados Unidos ha sidoelmayor ejemplo”,cuentaenentrevista.

Luis VonAhn ysuarma secreta: una computadora

La computadora se convirtió en un terreno nuevo aexplorar,ensumundo, de ahí nació su interés por la programación. Cinco años después, alos 13, ya había creado su primer programa. Ese regalodelaniñez lo llevó adesarrollar en el 2000 los programas Captcha yRecaptcha,que vendió en 2009 aGoogle,con apenas 29 años ya eramillonario. En 2011, creó Duolingo, una plataforma digital paraaprender más de 80 idiomas, que hoy vale 700 millones de dólares yestámuy cerca de convertiseenuna empresa unicornio. En su país natal,Guatemala, es un héroe,paralos latinos es un campeón yparael mundo es un genio. Es quizás el latinoamericano que más alto ha llegadoenelmercado tecnológico.

Luis VonAhn quería estudiar Matemáticas al salir del bachillerato, pero no encontró alguna universidad en Guatemala que ofrecieraesa carrera, fue así como llegó becado aEstados Unidos en 1996 paraestudiar en DukeUniversity, paradespués ir aCarnegie Mellon University.

Google ylos Captcha

Yahoo! implementóenel2000, un sistema paracomprobar que cada vez que se creaba una nueva cuenta de correo electrónico, detrás había un ser humano ynounprograma que utilizaría esa cuenta paraenviar cientosdecorreoselectrónicos basura. Ese sistema fue creado por el gustemalteco.

El impacto del sistema fue masivo: 200 millones de veces diarias se escribían Captcha alrededor del mundo, de acuerdo con Luis VonAhn. Además de Yahoo!, tiendas en línea, blogs ysistemas de venta de boletos en línea como Ticketmaster lo integraron a sus plataformas.

Esta visión le permitió fundarRecaptcha, la evolución de su sistema anti spam que tenía un objetivo más productivo: ayudar adigitalizar un libro. En 2009elsistema de Captcha yRecaptcha,fue adquiridopor

Google. Aunque la cifradelatransacción nunca fue revelada, el guatemalteco afirma que con ese dineronohabía necesidad de “volveratrabajar”.

Duolingo yelmundo de los idiomas

La mayoría de las personas buscan ser millonarias ycuando lo logranvarias se retiran paradisfrutar.Sin embargo, VonAhn tenía 29 años años logró esa hazaña. Pero los recuerdosdelaeducación en Guatemala lo convencieron de regresar al mundo del emprendimiento, ahoracrearía Duolingo, la plataforma de educación más utilizada en el mundo.

Duolingo se encuentraen82países, actualmente existen más de 200 millones de usuarios que aprendenidiomasgratuitamente, entre ellos Bill Gates, completando más de 7,000 millones de ejercicios al mes.

Sobre los retos que ha enfrentado dentro de la plataforma, está que “hastaapenas haceunos años, prácticamente Duolingono estaba generando dinero. Lo difícil es que no

queremos cobrarle al usuario por el uso de la plataforma,por ello encontramos diferentes maneras de poder ser autosuficientes”.

Luis von Ahn afirma que dentro de su carrerahatenido varios momentos clave, uno de ellos fue cuando Apple nombró aDuolingo como la aplicación del año, hecho que lo llevó aconocer que realmente la decisión de seguir emprendiendo fue la correcta yque su emprendimientoayuda abastantes personas en el mundo.

Duolingohacrecido mucho como empresa. Actualmente tiene más de 500 empleados yestávalorada en 2.78 mil millones de dólares.

El CEO de Duolingoestáenfocado en tres objetivos paralos siguientesaños:hacer de la app un negociosostenible, enseñar idiomas de la maneramás efectivaposible y expandir la enseñanza atravésdeotros tipos de contenido yexperiencias.

“Vamos aexpandirnosa otros tipos de productos, como un podcastparaque la gente en Estados Unidos aprendaespañol, también aeventos con personas. Mi mayorobjetivo es que dentro de dos años, una persona pueda aprender perfectamente un idioma medianteDuolingo”, nos dice Luis von Ahn.

El CEO de la aplicación de idiomas les da un consejo muy valioso atodos los emprendedores que vanainiciar,pero les da miedo.

“Que simplemente lo hagan, en mí experienciaelmayor problema que tienen los emprendedores que no han empezado es simplemente eso, que no han empezado, se la pasan pensando ‘me gustaría empezar peronoséqué’,yoles diría, sólo háganlo, es como tirarse del trampolín, simplemente hayque hacerlo.”

Otro de losconsejos que les da alos emprendedores, lo aprendiódesuprimer jefe (en realidadera su asesor en el doctorado) Manuel Blum, quien les enseñó aexplicar de una maneraconcisa yclaralos proyectos, esto le ayudaría ahablar de una forma más clara.

Newowners take over Cary Ale House

After coming undernew ownershipafew weeks ago, CaryAle House& Brewing Co. won’t seesubstantialchanges to start, but its newowners have some ideas for additions in the coming months.

Tony Pristeraand Kris Kehlersaid Friday thatnew plans are not yetset in stone,and they expecttorun the ale houseasbusiness as usual to start.

“It’sa lot of researchand development right now,” Pristerasaid

Afteropening in 2015,CaryAle House was sold in Januarytothree newowners, all of whom reside in Cary. In asocial media post lastmonth, former ownerChrisPanagakis thanked the community forits support.

“You are all appreciated more than you will ever know,” he wrote.

After aone-day closure, newownersPristera, Kehlerand Chris Podgorski reopened in mid-January.

Thegroup plans to keep the staff, menu, name and current operations consistent, Kehler and Pristerasaid. Kehler noted the quality of food is abig draw

Some of the plans being kicked around include renovating the interior and expanding indoor seating, Kehlersaid. Thepotential for expanded hours and more community engagement is on thetable, too.

One thingthatcould come is anew game room in the back with games such as darts, Kehler said. Thebathrooms also could be renovated.

“There’s alot of things that maycome in the future here, but right now,wedon’t have any solidifiedplans to changewhatthe theme of the place is or the menu,”Kehler said. “Maybe some minor tweaks.”

To start, the trio will trytoget afeel of the clienteleand take time to learn about the culture of thebusiness, Kehler said.

“This wasn’t likeadistressedpurchase that needed to be rescued,”Kehler said.“We have a good opportunitytocarryonwhatthe previous owner built.”

Panagakis went on to sayhe believes the business will be left in “goodhands” and be taken to the next level. He also noted thatthe staffand conceptfor thebusiness are settoremain the same, and he will remainthe head brewer.

“We’reexcited to takeittothe next level,” Kehler said. “There’s agoodfoundationhere, and we think there’s achance to grow the brand in the communityand engage in thecommunitymore.”

Pace, CTAteamuponnew unlimited passes

Pace and ChicagoTransit Authority passengers can chose among four passes offering unlimited rides on both systems as of Monday, Feb. 20.

With ridership still below pre-pandemic levels, the newfare products streamline travel and remove hassles for suburban and citycommuters,agencyleaders said.

Thepasses for unlimited bus and CTAtrain rides are: one-dayfor $5,three-dayfor $15,

seven-dayfor $20 and30-dayfor $75.

Thenew products will be availablefor purchase throughthe Ventra system.

“These changes improveaccessand provide customers with better fare payment options, flexibility, andlower fares,”Pace Executive Director Melinda Metzgersaidinastatement

According to recent data from October 2022, Pace ridership was at 70%of2019levels and CTAridership was at 57%.

“Now more than ever,it’svital we seek out newopportunities to eliminate the hurdles of

taking publictransit andallow Chicagoans and visitors aliketotravel seamlesslythroughout the region,”said CTAPresident DorvalR.Carter Jr.said in astatement.

“Public transit is the equity equalizer,and with these changes we are opening more doors and allowing anyone to gettofarthestcorners of our regionfor onelow price.”

Clearing clutterwithaconscience Electronics recycling is the law —and the right choice for our planet

Whether you are cleaning out your basement or trying to downsize, getting rid of old stuffcan be ahassle. But with outdated televisions, cellphones and computers, tossing them in the trash is never a good option.

As our environmental reporter Jenny Whidden shared on Sunday, it is illegal to throw away laptops, printers and other electronics gathering dustinyour home.

Illinois is one of 25 states with electronic recycling laws. Our law, updated in 2017,established asystem for recycling and reusing unwanted electronics —and requires manufacturers to share in the financial responsibilityofproperly disposing of the products theycreate.

Devices covered under the program include computers, computer monitors, electronic keyboards and mice, printers, fax machines, DVD players, cable receivers and video game consoles. These gadgets thatwerely on for entertainment, communication and so much more are full of toxic components —including lead, cadmium and arsenic —thathavenoplace in landfills.

Northern Cook County, told Whidden that recycling electronics should come down to conservation and environmental health. In other words, we save and reuse what parts we can —and safely getrid of what we can’t

“The metals and the glass both have recoverabilityaswell as potential toxicity —for the heavy metals, for the mercury, for the cadmium in some of the old TVs and monitors,”Allen said. “It’simportant from an environmental standpoint to try and recover whatwecan and certainly to do safe disposal or recycling of the components thatcan harm our land, air or water.”

WaucondaFBLAteamtackles human trafficking

Wauconda’sFBLA Community Service Team —thisyear consistingofmembers Kylee Fedorowicz, RachelHerreraand Daniel Estrada —are focusing their project on the effects of human trafficking on the communityofWauconda.

In recent years, threebusinesses in Wauconda were shut down becausetheywere participating in illegal human trafficking activity. TheCommunityService Team was shocked after hearingthis, mainly because mostpeople find it difficult to talk about.

TheCommunityService Team wanted to educate youthand the community at largebymaking the issueknown to the public.

During National Human Trafficking Awarenessmonth in January,the team made about600 blue ribbonsand passed them out during schoollunch periods. They also human traffickingand it affects their community.

When teammembers werefirstintroduced to the topic,theywere informed that Wauconda has addedthe Wauconda123 Ordinance to makeitmore difficult forillegitimatemassage parlors to operateinthe community. That was the majorsourceof human trafficking in the village.

This ordinance required employees to

have the proper licensetooperateamassage parlor in Illinois and thatthe employers put official addresses for all their employees on file.

Upon learning this,the CommunityService Team decided to travel to villageboard meetings in Island Lake,Volo and other villages thatfeed into Wauconda High School to advocatefor the same —orsimilar—ordinancetobepassed.

If you’ve given anythought to cancer prevention,you have probablythoughtabout yourdiet. Almosteveryweek anew trend is hitting the health food headlines. It can makeitalmostimpossible to settle on what to eatand noteat.

But thereisone dietthatisconsistently proven, over more than twodecades, to reduce your risk for cancer.Itisa plant-based diet.

Eating plant-based does not mean you can’t eatmeat. It means your meals are mostly plants: vegetables, whole grains and fruits. Beans, seeds and nutsare also included.

Fill two-thirds of yourplate with these plant-based foods. Theremaining one-third should be alean protein likechicken or fish, or aplant protein liketofuorbeans

Plant foodsreduceinflammation. Plants’ essential nutrients work to resolve inflammation in your body.The same tiny phytochemicals and antioxidants thatboostyour immune system also go aroundyour body neutralizing toxins from pollution, processed food, bacteria,viruses andmore.

“Antioxidants in plantsgraball these socalled free radicals thatcan throw yourbody offbalance,” says Murray.“To reduce inflam-

mation, it’s important to eatplant-basedand to listen to your body’s signals forhow foods work foryou.”

Prolonged inflammation can damage your body’s cellsand tissue and has been linked to cancer and other inflammatorydiseases likearthritis. Aplant-based dietmay protectyou because it removes some of the triggers to these diseases.

Universityisthe recipient of anew,$2.5 million grant thatwill modernize and expand its information technologynetwork while greatly enhancing student experience and access.

TheU.S. Department of Commerce grant is provided through the Connecting MinorityCommunities Pilot Program, partofthe Biden Administration’s Internetfor All initiative, which aims to expand technologyand reliable high-speed internetaccess to everyone in America.

Dominican, with an undergraduate enrollment thatismore than 60% Hispanic, is one of only 12 minority-serving institutions of higher learning selected to receive this grant. Thegrant will allow the universitytobring its broadband and IT capacity up to arobustlevel, which will allow for advanced technologyeducation.

“With the $2.5 million from this grant, DU-IT can finally takeproactive steps to future-proof our network, refresh the technologyinmanyofour campus classrooms and, mostimportantly,assistour students

in meeting their goals at Dominican,”said Todd Kleine, chiefinformation officer for Dominican University.

Additionally,new state-of-the-art equipment purchased for the university’s Rebecca Crown Libraryand new, handson educational workshops will give students experience in using technologycommonly found in today’sworkforce, said EstevanMontaño, universitylibrarian.

Yash Hatkar’s journey in standup comedy began at whatheplanned to be hislife’send.

After years of struggling with sexual identityissuesand obsessive-compulsive disorder,life seemed achore.

He decided on May23, 2022, thatan overdose of Prozac would providea wayout.

“I was prescribed to takeone,”the 24-year-old Buffalo Grove resident and Stevenson High Schoolgraduate said recently “I readonline thatfour times the dose would be verydangerous. So Idid eight.”

Hatkar put on the series finale to the Netflixseries “Ozark,” thinkingitwould be the lastthing he watched. By the time it was over,“logic kicked in,”hesaid.

“I realized maybe Ishouldn’t have done this.”Hecalled his therapistand checked intoHighlandPark Hospital, where he spent aweek in the young adult ward.Hethen received treatment through Rogers Behavioral HealthinSkokie until his release in August.

Theidea of turning to standup comedy began when his bestfriend remarked how Hatkaroften joked about his struggles. “One day, I’ll seea standup (comedyspecial) about this on Netflix,”his friend said.

Hisdecision crystallized after seeing a performance by comedian John Mulaney, who discussed how his battles with drug abuse helped inspire him to trystandup.

“This guy was telling primarily an entire life storythrough the lens of comedy,” Hatkar said.

Hatkar will share his storyduring aperformanceMarch 25 at Chicago’sDavis Theater,4614N.Lincoln Ave. The7p.m. show will be preceded by apanel discussion featuring mental health experts from organizations such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness.Proceeds will benefit Highland Park Hospital and Rogers Behavioral Health Experts saystorieslikeHatkar’s illustrate how comedy can provide an outletfor dis-

Clifton Saper,lead psychologist and director of clinical servicesfor the Behavioral Medicine Service Line for Ascension Illinois, knowswell the relationship between humor and mental health. “The funnyislooking backatyourself and not taking yourself so seriously, and looking at yourself as aregular humanbeing thathas foiblesand wishes and desires, justlikeanybody else,”Saper said. “Sortofputting your life and whatyou’ve been going through in perspective.”

Despite the benefits, comedy should not serve as asubstitute for actual therapy,King said.

Hatkar’s routine weaves in aspects of his struggles withsexuality, anxiety and OCD

“Sometimes the jokes are situational,”he said.“Like, for example,the ‘Ozark’ thing right? Likeyou’re about to die and your immediate concern is, ‘OK,how’s this show going to end?’ And then the firstthing I thought when the episode ended was, ‘Oh, whata(bad)episode to go out on. ’”

ForHatkar,who has had acouple of trial performances ahead of next month’s show, comedy allows him to saythings thatwould be difficult to digestunderdifferent circumstances.

“It’slighteningthe mood for something that’sverytough to talk about,” he said,adding thatitalso shows others theycan ease their mental healthburdens by talkingabout them.

Hisjourney thatbegan withanattempt on his own life has taught him valuable lessons about life’s possibilities.

“Everyone says the skyisthe limit. I disagree. Isay the skyisthe floor,” he said. “Don’t letanybody tell you whatyou can or can’t do.”

“So whatyou folks are doing here today is allowing for more people to enter those proverbial doors and morepeople to be partof what’sinside,”Krishnamoorthi said. “Access to knowledge, access to progress and access to upliftment of our entire society.”

Thelibrarywill use the moneytotriple its space, adding 8,000 square feetthatwill include anew children’sarea,more studyand meeting rooms, additional collection space, an activityroom and extraspace for staff.

Thebranch opened in July 2016 after the librarydistrictbought the 12,466-squarefoot building. Due to alackoffunding at the time, only about athird of the available space was developed.

Buildingplans for the expansion are complete, and construction is expected to takesix to seven months once it begins.

Thedevelopmentsreflecta growing interestin consumers, industryexperts say, alongside agreater need among them for access to information about EV charging and rebates. With supply chain dysfunction contributing to an inventoryshortagenationwide, the show is achance to see and potentially test-drive more than20electric vehicles.

That number is farahead of what the show offered in previousyears. Theshow’s EV indoor test track--triple the sizeoflastyear’s allows visitors to go for arideinthe passenger seat.Guestscan getbehindthe wheel of ahandful of EVsatone of the fouroutdoortesttracks, run by Ford, Kia, Subaruand Volkswagon.

“Justafew years ago, there were maybethree or fourEVs on the floor.Now there’s more than 20. That’s abig difference. Threeyears ago, it was Tesla or nobody,” said Mark Bilek, senior director of communications and technologywith the ChicagoAutomobile Trade Association, which hosts the annual event. “Now there’s all sorts of Tesla competitors out thereoffering vehicles. Ithink that’sprobablythe biggestchange.”

Bilek added that the number of EVs on the market is only expected to grow.

“Inthe span of just maybe twoand ahalfyears, you’ve seen the numbers just growexponentially,and thatwillcontinue,” he said. “You’ve gota whole bunch of electric vehicles that are setto comeonline in the next year or so, as manufacturers work towardreachingthe goal that many states nowhaveenacted for no internal combustion engine vehicles sold after 2035.”

While Illinois hasn’t followed others likeCaliforniainbanningthe futuresale of gasoline-powered cars, the statehas been nudging its residents to go electric by rolling out initiatives such as rebate programs and charginginfrastructure projects. Theefforts are partofthe state’slofty climate goals of getting amillionelectric vehicles on the road by 2030 and reaching 100% cleanenergyby2050.

To reach those goals,PoweringChicagoExecutiveDirector ElbertWalters IIIsaidit’snot just the cars thatshouldbeinthe spotlight for consumers,but alsocharging infrastructure.

“There’s goingtobea need for an infrastructurethatisresilient, thatisreliable and thatisinstalledsafelysothatindividuals whodochoose to investinelectric vehiclesknowthatwherever they choosetoconnecttheirvehicle to acharging unit, it’s installed correctly,” Walters said.

Theshow is highlighting anumberofchargers, both residential and commercial, throughout its two McCormick Place halls. At the Powering Chicago EV Learning Center,experts are available to talk with guestsaboutinstallation, the different types of chargers available,rebates and tax incentives and more.
