Shedd Aquarium details major renovations

Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium provided new details Tuesday about its yearslong renovation plan that will make waves for both visitors and animals, including new immersive exhibits with bilingual signs and updating animal habitats.

This summer marks the start of the major changes of the eight-year, $500 million transformation.

“Over the course of the next four years, we are going to lean in to our ability to connect people with the natural world, come eye to eye with nature, build compassion, and then be a catalyst to a groundswell of community efforts in conservation,” said Bridget Coughlin, president and CEO of the Shedd Aquarium

Some of the changes began earlier this year, which involved combining all of the aquarium’s labs and the animal hospital into one space and opening a new bilingual exhibit on plankton in July The larger and modernized lab space will be completed by September.

Shedd plans to complete all of the planned renovations by 2030, in time for its centennial anniversary. The aquarium will stay open throughout the project.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson spoke about the transformation during a news conference Tuesday.

“The latest expansion reminds us why Shedd leads on the national stage of conservation and environmental education and ensures that more students from Illinois and across the nation will benefit from the education provided here,” Pritzker said

Johnson said he was especially excited about the aquarium’s continued commitment to young people, especially Chicago Public Schools students and kids from the South and West sides

“This aquarium is a crown jewel for the city and for the state,” Johnson said. “I’m excited to see this transformation because it furthers our city’s status as a world-class destination and a leader of innovation.”

The upgrades will be opened on a rolling basis as they’re completed They include remodeling the aquarium’s entrance to be more accessible for visitors, updating exhibits and creating new ones, making all signs in the aquarium bilingual and offering more educational programs.

The focus of the exhibits will be on the animals, their behaviors and the greater biodiversity of their environments, rather than the current focus on geography.

Andrew Pulver, the vice president of animal care at Shedd, said the upgrades to the animal habitats were designed to give visitors

a closer look at how the animals behave and interact with their environment

“These changes will create a deeper appreciation for the very large, diverse collection of animals at Shedd. We have 30,000 animals and over 1,000 species, and we can now bring visitors closer to them to get a behind-the-scenes look,” Pulver said.

The aquarium unveiled its Centennial Commitment last year, transforming much of the Shedd’s mission.

“Every single element of the Centennial Commitment is committed to positive impact for animals and erasing the divide between humans and nature,” Coughlin said “That’s never more important now with the globe in crisis and with the increasing urbanization of the world”

“Wonder of Water” will replace the Shedd’s Caribbean Reef tank, which has greeted visitors since it was built in 1971 The animals in the tank will be moved to a new Caribbean exhibit.

The existing “Amazon Rising” gallery exploring the Amazon River basin will also be updated.

The next three phases will be completed over four years:

Summer 2024-summer 2026

• “Changing Oceans” will be a new immersive experience at the aquarium Visitors will be able to follow from the top of the ocean down to its depths and learn about how the animals and their environments have been impacted by climate change

• Within Changing Oceans, there will be exhibits on towering kelp forests and the

new ecosystem that is created when a whale dies The gallery will also feature a new 40foot “Caribbean Tunnel” which visitors can walk through to experience the Caribbean Reef habitat, featuring Nickel the green sea turtle, blacktip reef sharks and spotted eagle rays.

• The Lakeside Learning Studio will be the new home for educational programming at Shedd. The classrooms will be moved from the basement to the main gallery areas. The aquarium will be able to go from hosting 180,000 students annually to beyond 230,000

• Shedd will expand and restore the North Terrace, providing more space to enjoy the view of Lake Michigan and the city skyline

Summer 2026-winter 2026

Two galleries will be updated during this phase:

• The “River Wonders” gallery will show visitors the biology and behaviors in and around an Illinois stream.

• The “Living Lakes” gallery will highlight the habits of freshwater fish and visitors will be able to learn about how the Great Lakes provide an ecosystem that supports thousands of species.

The Shedd’s foyer, the Grand Hall, will also be restored to create a more welcoming atmosphere. The room will feature animal encounters, learning programs and interactives

West Suburban Community Pantry uses new tech to communicate with migrant community

West Suburban Community Pantry recently began using the Instant Language Assistant by Translate Live to defeat the language barrier that was impeding the pantry’s ability to serve their increasingly diverse migrant population.

The new device is changing the way staff and volunteers communicate with customers, who speak more than 17 global languages, now seeking groceries, household items and services at the West Suburban Community Pantry

“It’s a critical piece of equipment,” says pantry CEO Suzanne Armato “More than half of our community doesn’t choose English as their first language Ensuring we connect our community to the healthy foods they want and need and support services that can help stabilize and improve their lives well, that begins with talking to one another.”

The Instant Language Assistant supports 120 languages It offers a variety of dialects, and it can be loaded with common phrases to ease in specific uses. The Instant Language Assistant is used by volunteers and staff to welcome customers, introduce them to the supportive services and assist with check-in and registration.

The device features two screens the text and screen colors can be changed to aid customers with low vision

Customers can speak or text using the tablet,

or they can enter a virtual chat room and use their own phone without setting up an account

“I’ve seen firsthand the power of this small piece of hardware,” says Paul Matsushima, director of pantry operations “Recently, I helped several newly immigrated individuals sign up to get groceries using the ILA It allowed us to have a conversation and put us on equal footing It really breaks down the language barrier and reduces the stress of a new situation for all We could use a lot more to help assist our community One really isn’t enough ”

West Suburban Community Pantry in Woodridge served more than 110,000 individuals in DuPage and Will counties seeking food and resources last year Implementing the use of devices like the Instant Language Assistant is critical to increasing the efficiency of pantry operations and serving with dignity.

West Suburban Community Pantry increases access to nutritious foods through our in-person food pantry, online ordering, senior home delivery, and child nutrition programs in local school districts. Serving more than 9,000 community members in DuPage and Will counties each month, it additionally supports families in reaching a higher quality of life by providing financial assistance, wellness workshops, and counseling with a focus on crisis stabilization. Rescuing the rescuers

Shield 23 Foundation Inc. gifts funds to firefighters and paramedics fighting job-related cancers

Russ Constantino loved his job with theGurnee Fire Department. He was the department’s Quartermaster, responsible for the distribution and inventory of all the supplies, materials and equipment.

It came as a shock to Russ’s family that his handling of that gear contributed to the cancer that eventually took his life

The turnout gear firefighters wear, when heated, gives off carcinogens, which is a contributing cause to cancer In 2007, Russ developed a brain tumor and fought for more than two years before succumbing to his illness in 2009

In honor of her husband’s fight and the firefighters who rallied around her family during the darkest of times, Shenan Constantino and her children created Shield 23 Foundation Inc. The foundation gives money to other firefighters who are fighting work-related cancers.

“Firefighters are used to being the rescuers and the helpers they are not used to being the center of attention or being on the receiving end of a helping hand, and it is often difficult for them to reach out for the help they and their family may need,” said Shenan Constantino in an email

“But our family knows firsthand the stress and anxiety of dealing with cancer, and the financial toll especially We hope our gifting will ease at least some of that burden This is our family’s way of honoring Russ’s memory, and honoring those who helped us at that time, and paying it forward”

Karla Cutting and her husband, Andy, are among those who have benefited from the foundation’s monetary help. Unfortunately, Andy passed away in January.

“My husband of 25 years, and a firefighter/ paramedic on the Skokie Fire Department for nearly that long, was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer in August 2022. He passed in January. I am so eternally grateful to Shield 23 for their support, and will do whatever I can going forward to support this phenomenal charity,” Karla Cutting said in an email

To help raise funds, Shield 23 Foundation Inc hosted the “Fight Smoke, Fire & Cancer” Golf Outing Friday, Aug 4, in McHenry County The Constantino family hopes the event not only raised funds, but also awareness about cancer-related illnesses in firefighters If you would like to support this cause, make a donation at www. Shield23Foundation.org.

Shenan Constantino talks about the foundation.

Q: What is Shield 23 Foundation Inc.?

A: Shield 23 Foundation Inc. was formed in 2018 in memory of my late husband, Russell S. Constantino, a Waukegan native and 20-year Gurnee firefighter/paramedic, who passed away Nov 9, 2009, at age 46 after a 2½-year battle with job-related brain cancer

GURNEE FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC Russell S. Constantino is the inspiration behind the start of Shield 23 Foundation Inc , which gifts money to firefighters and their families fighting job-related cancers Russ died in 2009 from a brain tumor.

S23F was named for Russ’s badge number. Shield 23 Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that raises funds for and gifts funds to firefighters battling cancer and the families that stand beside them.

The financial support may be used toward medical costs not covered by insurance, travel and transportation costs related to treatment, loss of income, household bills and expenses, meals, child care, etc. We have a Gifting Committee of dedicated volunteers who review each gift request and makes appropriate gifting recommendations to the S23F board, which issues the final approval

Our board includes our now-adult children, who both followed in their father’s example of service; our son is a firefighter/ paramedic in Lake County and our daughter serves as an officer in the Indiana Army National Guard

Q: How many people do you help each year?

A: As of this writing, in the past four years we have presented 31 giftings, for a total of $89,190.

We currently have a couple of pending gift requests in process and anticipate crossing $100,000 before the end of 2023.

It is very important to show a personal touch, so all giftings are presented in person to the firefighter and their family It is usually arranged to take place at the gift recipient’s fire station so their firefighter brothers and sisters may participate and show their support, but also sometimes at the venue of a fundraiser being thrown on their behalf

“Our slogan, ‘For Love of Family & Broth-

SHIELD 23 Foundation held a gifting ceremony for Chicago firefighter/EMT Bob Arens of Truck 9 The foundation, created in honor of Gurnee firefighter/paramedic Russ Constantino, helps firefighters with job-related cancers.

erhood,’ is what is etched on Russ’s grave marker It means that not only is the firefighter gift recipient a member of the fire service family at large and their respective fire department family, but forever more also the Shield 23 Foundation family,” Shenan said.

Q: Where do the majority of your funds come from to support your work?

A: We have been incredibly blessed by those who have generously supported our mission over the past five years.

We have received donations from sponsors such as Mission BBQ (Gurnee); from beneficiary events such as fire departments and their unions, who share with S23F a portion of the proceeds from their own fundraising events; other local organizations that have designated S23F as a beneficiary of their events, such as Gurnee Days Car Show; from fundraising events such as socials and raffles; direct donations via our website and our Facebook page; private donors who know or have known a firefighter with cancer; our S23F merchandise (see www Shield23Foundation.org), and both individual and fire service group memberships.

Q: How can readers help your organization?

A: Please contact us via our website, www.Shield23Foundation.org, or our Facebook page if you know of an active duty firefighter battling cancer in Illinois or surrounding states who could benefit from financial support

• Serve as a liaison for a firefighter battling cancer and complete and submit a gift request, as found at www Shield23Foundation org, on behalf of a firefighter battling cancer

• Donate on the website; become a member, sponsor or donor; and follow us on Facebook

Q: What else would you like readers to know?

A: According to the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, “ cancer is the most dangerous threat to firefighter health and safety today.”

• “Cancer caused 66% of the career firefighter line-of-duty deaths from 2002 to 2019, according to data from the International Association of Fire Fighters. Heart disease caused 18% of career line-of-duty deaths for the same period.”

• “Cancer caused 70% of the line-of-duty deaths for career firefighters in 2016.”

• “Firefighters have a 9% higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14% higher risk of dying from cancer than the general U S population,” according to research by the CDC/National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety

Heat, air pollution may double heart attack risk

Extreme temperatures combined with high levels of air pollution dramatically increase the risk of older adults having a fatal heart attack, new research from China suggests

The study, published this week in the American Heart Association journal Circulation, found the risk of dying from a heart attack may double on days with both extremely high temperatures and excessive levels of pollution from fine particulate matter. Extreme cold also may raise fatal heart attack risks, the results showed.

“Extreme temperature events are becoming more frequent, longer and more intense, and their adverse health effects have drawn growing concern, ” the study’s senior author, Dr. Yuewei Liu, said in a news release. Liu is an associate professor of epidemiology in the School of Public Health at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou

Fine particulate matter in the air may “interact synergistically” with extreme temperatures to adversely affect cardiovascular health, Liu said “Our findings provide evidence that reducing exposure to both extreme temperatures and fine particulate pollution may be useful to prevent premature deaths from heart attack, especially for women and older adults.”

Fine particulate matter pollution comes from burning fuels and includes vehicle exhaust, factory emissions and wildfire smoke.

Particles less than 2.5 microns can be easily inhaled deep into the lungs, where they

can cause irritation to the lungs and blood vessels around the heart Prior research has linked exposure to fine particulate matter pollution to heart disease, stroke and other health issues

The researchers analyzed data for 202,678 heart attack deaths from 2015 to 2020 in Jiangsu province, a coastal region in eastern China with a wide range of temperatures and fine particulate matter levels The people who died were nearly 78 years old on average.

Fine particulate matter pollution levels were measured on the day of and day before each death. Particulate matter levels were considered high on any day the average exceeded 37.5 micrograms per cubic meter.

Extreme temperatures were measured using the daily heat index, which reflects the combined impact of heat and humidity

A heat wave was defined as temperatures at or above 82 6 degrees Fahrenheit for two or more days The days a heart attack death occurred were compared with control days defined as the same day of the week within the same month That is, if a heart attack occurred on a Wednesday, every other Wednesday in the same month would be considered a control day

Compared to control days, researchers found the risk of a fatal heart attack was twice as high during four-day heat waves with fine particulate pollution above 37.5 micrograms per cubic meter. It was 18% higher during two-day heat waves when tempera-

tures ranged from 82 6 to 97 9 degrees Fahrenheit, and 74% higher during four-day heat waves when heat indexes reached 94 8 to 109 4 degrees Fahrenheit

Extreme cold also affected the risk of having a fatal heart attack Compared to control days, the risks were 4% higher during twoday cold snaps when temperatures ranged from 33 3 to 40 5 degrees, and 12% higher during three-day cold snaps when temperatures were 27 to 37.2 degrees. But unlike with extreme heat, there was no added risk of a fatal heart attack when extreme cold was combined with pollution exposure.

During heat waves, cold snaps and days with high levels of pollution, the risk of heart attack death was generally higher among women than men, and among adults 80 and older compared to younger adults.

The researchers estimated that up to 2 8% of fatal heart attacks in the study could be attributable to the combination of extreme temperatures and elevated levels of fine particulate pollution

To prevent negative effects on health, Liu recommended monitoring weather forecasts and staying inside when temperatures reach extremes, using fans and air conditioners to cool down, dressing appropriately for the weather, staying hydrated and installing window blinds to reduce indoor temperatures.

Liu also said the added risk associated with high levels of pollution can be avoided by using an indoor air purifier, wearing a

IF YOU’RE at risk for heart problems, it is recommended that you monitor weather forecasts for extreme temperatures and air pollution To minimize risk from air pollution, use an indoor air purifier, wear a mask outdoors and choose less strenuous outdoor activities

mask outdoors, staying clear of busy highways when walking and choosing less strenuous outdoor activities

“To improve public health, it is important to take fine particulate pollution into consideration when providing extreme temperature warnings to the public,” Liu said

About varicose veins

Varicose veins are swollen and enlarged veins – usually blue or dark purple – that usually occur on the legs They may also be lumpy, bulging or twisted in appearance

Other symptoms include:

• aching, heavy and uncomfortable legs

• swollen feet and ankles

• muscle cramp in your legs

• dry skin and colour changes in the lower leg

Your GP can diagnose varicose veins based on these symptoms, although further tests may be carried out.

Why do varicose veins happen?

Varicose veins develop when the small valves inside the veins stop working properly

In a healthy vein, blood flows smoothly to the heart The blood is prevented from flowing backwards by a series of tiny valves that open and close to let blood through

If the valves weaken or are damaged, the blood can flow backwards and collect in the vein, eventually causing it to be swollen and enlarged (varicose).

Certain things can increase your chances of developing varicose veins, such as: pregnancy, being overweight, old age

Who is affected?

Varicose veins are a common condition, affecting up to 3 in 10 adults. Women are more likely to develop them than men.

Any vein in the body can become varicose, but they most commonly develop in the legs and feet, particularly in the calves This is because standing and walking puts extra pressure on the veins in the lower body

Increased risk

A number of things can increase your likelihood of developing varicose veins, including:

• gender

• genetics

• age

• being overweight

• occupation

• being pregnant

Gender

Women are more likely to be affected by varicose veins than men Research suggests this may be because female hormones tend to relax the walls of veins, making the valves more prone to leaking

Hormones are chemicals produced by the body, and changes may be caused by pregnancy, premenstrual syndrome orthe menopause

Genetics

Your risk of developing varicose veins is increased if a close family member has the condition. This suggests varicose veins may be partly caused by your genes (the units of genetic material you inherit from your parents).

Age

As you get older, your veins start to lose their elasticity and the valves inside them stop working as well

Varicose Veins ¿TIENES VÁRICES? ¿SIENTES CANSANCIO Y DOLOR EN LAS PIERNAS?

Being overweight

Being overweight puts extra pressure on your veins, which means they have to work harder to send the blood back to your heart. This can put increased pressure on the valves, making them more prone to leaking.

The impact of body weight on the development of varicose veins appears to be more significant in women.

Use a healthy weight calculator to check whether you are overweight

Occupation

Some research suggests jobs that require long periods of standing may increase your risk of getting varicose veins This is because your blood does not flow as easily when you are standing for long periods of time

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, the amount of blood increases to help support the developing baby. This puts extra strain on your veins.

Increased hormone levels during pregnancy also cause the muscular walls of the blood vessels to relax, which also increases your risk.

Varicose veins may also develop as the womb (uterus) begins to grow As the womb expands it puts pressure on veins in your pelvic area, which can sometimes cause them to become varicose

Although being pregnant can increase your risk of developing varicose veins, most women find their veins significantly improve after the baby is born

Other conditions

In rare cases, varicose veins are caused by other conditions. These include: a previous blood clot, a swelling or tumour in the pelvis, abnormal blood vessels

Symptoms of varicose veins

Varicose veins are dark purple or blue in colour and are usually twisted and bulging in appearance. Some people with varicose veins may experience pain or discomfort

As well as their distinctive appearance, symptoms of varicose veins can include: aching, heavy and uncomfortable legs, swollen feet and ankles, burning or throbbing in your legs, muscle cramp in your legs, particularly at night, dry, itchy and thin skin over the affected vein

These symptoms are usually worse during warm weather or if you ’ ve been standing up for long periods of time. They may improve when you walk around or if you rest and raise your legs. Pillows are a good way to raise your legs comfortably.

CONTROVERTIDA POLÍTICA DE ASILO DEL GOBIERNO BIDEN CONTINÚE TEMPORALMENTE

Janine Trainor

How to care for your child’s diabetes during the busy travel season

Summer is one of the most active times of a child’s life. With youth sports, travel, outdoor play and summer camps, there’s no end to the fun to be had But if your child has been diagnosed with pediatric diabetes, there may be extra precautions and planning that need to go into a safe and healthy summer.

If you ’ re heading off to see family or to get away to the great outdoors, your summer travel starts with a plan For a start, plan to pack double the insulin and supplies as you think you might need. If your child is on an insulin pump, be sure to bring a backup method for delivering insulin, just in case of pump failure. And be sure to bring extra blood glucose test strips, even if you use a continuous glucose monitor.

Be sure to pack extra batteries and an extra pump charger and bring along plenty of cooling packs for storing your child’s insulin while out and about If you’ll be traveling across time zones, talk to your child’s provider to understand how you may need to adjust the timing of insulin doses

Additionally, check with your health insurer to understand your out-of-town coverage and purchase extra travel insurance, if needed And there are some particular precautions to take when flying:

• To avoid possible issues going through security, ask your child’s provider for a travel letter confirming their diagnosis and specifying the supplies needed to carry on the plane

• Always pack insulin and supplies in a carry-on bag to ensure supplies are always available.

• Know you ’ re allowed to carry your child’s medical supplies, including emergency juice and liquids even if greater than the typical 3 ounce limit while going through airport security.

• Remove your child’s insulin pump or continuous glucose monitor before going through the airport’s full-body scanner. Manufacturers typically don’t recommend sending these devices through the X-ray machine, but you can request a hand inspection and pat-down

• Have the contact information for your pharmacy or emergency medical care on hand

Spending time outdoors, whether run-

ning through the neighborhood or hiking a local trail, can help your child destress and learn more about the world around them And staying active with a bike ride, swim or summer sport helps with your child’s blood sugar management

But as they increase their activity, be sure they drink more water to reduce the risk of dehydration, which can lead to higher blood sugar levels Make sure they carry a water bottle wherever they go.

Getting out, turning off the electronic devices and playing with their friends leads to some of the best summer memories a child can have Just be sure they’re being safe and caring for their diabetes while doing it.

• Dr. Shruti Atul Fadia, is a board-certified pediatric endocrinologist with Ascension Medical Group Illinois, specializing in the treatment of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, as in addition to other pediatric endocrine conditions including early puberty, growth issues and thyroid dysfunction

From Spider-Man to America Chavez, Latin and Latinx super heroes make the Marvel Universe a richer place each and every month! This October, Marvel Comics is proud to honor Hispanic and Latin American Month by spotlighting some its newer and fan-favorite Latin and Latinx characters.

In the same spirit as Marvel’s Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander History Month celebration this past May, select issues in October will feature stunning variant covers depicting Latin and Latinx heroes.

Within the pages of those very issues, those characters will team up with the titular stars in all-new bonus adventures This year ’ s Comunidades Variant Covers will be drawn by acclaimed artist Ernanda Souza and the stories will be told by a diverse lineup of Latin and Latinx creators, each one bringing their unique background, experience, and voice to Marvel Comics storytelling

Hailing from all corners of the Marvel mythos, this year ’ s spotlight characters feature Firebird, Shark-Girl, Power Man (Victor Alvarez), and Eva Quintero of Strange Academy. Not only are these stories perfect for introducing or reintroducing these beloved characters to readers, but they’ll also position them for their own bright futures. Here’s what fans can expect:

Writer Juan Ponce and artist Ig Guara catch up with one of Strange Academy’s most promising pupils Eva Quintero “borrows ” a book from the Scarlet Witch’s private collection and gets more than she bargained for when the book sucks her into a demonic realm! With the help of her Strange Academy teacher, Wanda Maximoff, Eva must find a way to escape before she’s trapped between the pages forever

Former Avenger Firebird brings her fiery passion to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes once more in an adventure by writer Kalinda Vazquez and artist Alba Glez. Alongside Captain Marvel and Captain America, Firebird is called upon by the Avengers to investigate a mystery in the desert. Their quest will lead them straight to an all-new character with secrets to reveal deep within … Roswell, New Mexico.

Writer Vita Ayala and artist Alitha Mar-

tinez send Victor Alvarez, a k a Power Man, on an exciting new journey But first, he’ll have to survive a battle with the strongest there is. Chasing down a threat, Power Man winds up locked in a brawl with the Incredible Hulk.

Fresh off their Marvel debut in “Marvel’s Voices: X-Men,” writing duo Raphael Draccon and Carolina Munhóz will join artist Marcelo Costa to bring together Shark-Girl and Sunspot. The two mutants team up for the very first time as they return to their home nation of Brazil to investigate mysterious disappearances of local fisherman but when their investigation leads them to “Ilha da Queimada Grande,” they find themselves in a showdown with King Cobra! Together, Shark-Girl and Sunspot have to act fast to stop King Cobra’s nefarious plans and try not to fall victim to the local fauna in the process

Check out the first two Comunidades Variant Covers and stay tuned for more to be revealed in the weeks ahead. And celebrate Marvel’s Latin and Latinx heroes and creators this October.

THIS OCTOBER, MARVEL COMICS IS PROUD TO HONOR HISPANIC AND LATIN AMERICAN MONTH BY SPOTLIGHTING SOME ITS NEWER AND FANFAVORITE LATIN AND LATINX CHARACTERS.

First Hispanic woman elected to lead the DAV

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. Utah native Nancy Espinosa was unanimously elected national commander of the more than 1 million-member DAV (Disabled American Veterans) today in Atlantic City, New Jersey, at the organization’s 101st national convention. The service-connected disabled Army veteran is the first Hispanic woman to hold DAV’s highest post.

“I do not take this responsibility lightly and promise to give you all my absolute best effort in this role,” Espinosa told the crowd

of more than 2,000 DAV members and supporters “I look forward to channeling the warrior spirit of my ancestors and the force of character that fills this room as we work toward our shared mission of serving veterans and their families.”

Currently a member of DAV Chapter 14 in Layton, Utah, Espinosa is the adjutant of the DAV Department of Utah and also served as past department commander and chairman of the department’s finance committee. She is also an active member of DAV’s Commanders and Adjutants Association

and a commissioner on the Utah Legislative Veterans and Military Affairs Commission

In 2014, Espinosa was awarded the Bonnie Anderson Award for Outstanding Service by the DAV Department of Utah.

“Service appeals to the best in us and the best of us, ” said Espinosa “It calls to our grit and determination. It tests us and pushes us to our limits not for glory or goods, but in service to others. It says to the underdog, ‘You are meant for something bigger than yourself.’”

Espinosa was a member of the Army

Reserve from 1975 until becoming an active-duty soldier in 1985 After four years of active service, she joined the New Mexico Army National Guard, serving until her honorable discharge in 1990.

“Commander Espinosa has earned the respect of her fellow veterans at DAV through years of dedicated service,” said DAV National Adjutant and CEO Barry Jesinoski “She’s nationally revered for her contributions to our cause and will help us tremendously as our community faces our critical legislative priorities”

No dice nada, solo canta.

El título en cuestión se titula 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter'
