JOLIET: From the Beginning Just over 40 miles southwest of Chicago, the city of Joliet sits, quite literally, at the crossroads of history. Joliet is where those iconic paths, the Lincoln Highway and Route 66, intersect, imparting to passersby that here lies a town with true American stories to tell. Those stories tell of a city with humble beginnings that rose to have a population of more than 150,000 and many modern industries. According to Kim Shehorn, educator at the Joliet Area Historical Museum, Joliet’s history shows “a diversity that remains today and creates character for the community.” The story of Joliet’s growth is a microcosm of the growth of our nation as a whole and a testament to the fact that the American dream is forever a work in progress. The first inhabitants of the Joliet area were Native Americans. The Hopewell culture of mound-building peoples settled the area early in the first millennium A.D., followed by the Mississippian society, the Illini and later the Pottawatomie cultures. In 1673, Europeans arrived nearby, notably the town’s namesake Louis Jolliet and Father Frances Marquette, who camped on a mound near present day Joliet while traveling down the Des Plaines River. Because of the river, the two explorers found this area to be navigable, fertile and full of game. For these reasons, a settlement arose in the area and the favorable farmland brought more and more people looking for their piece of America during the period of western expansion. Émigrés from New York came in especially high numbers. It was not until 1834 that the town was laid out in earnest, and was originally incorporated under the name of Juliet in 1837. For economic reasons the town annulled this incorporation, and in 1845 reincorporated as Joliet. At this time, industry began to boom and Joliet became known as the “City of Stone” in reference to the nine limestone quarries that operated in the area. The promise of work in the harvesting and transportation of the rocks brought immigrants from many different places. Additionally, the construction work on the Illinois and Michigan Canal encouraged many Irish immigrants to Joliet. When

completed in 1848, the canal further expanded Joliet’s waterways and allowed the stone to be sold throughout the upper Midwest. The industrial revolution was gaining momentum, and Joliet grew along with its industries. The next surge of residents into Joliet occurred following the opening of the Joliet Steel Mill in 1869. Many employees from southeastern Europe, especially Slovenia, came to work the mills of Joliet and before long, the “City of Stone” became the “City of Steel.” The population increased as companies like Phoenix Horseshoe and Moore Stove Works began supplying its goods to the entire country. Joliet was rapidly becoming a destination city for those willing to work in the ever-expanding industrial economy. As the turn of the century approached, the steel of Joliet was shaped to fit the needs of another fledgling industry that was taking hold of the city and the rest of the nation: automobiles. The city was home to the Economy Motor Buggy Co. in the early 1900s. That company’s building remains in present-day Joliet on Bissell Street. Also, Checker Cabs were made in Joliet until the 1940s. Throughout the 1900s, Joliet’s mills and enormous workforce brought countless other industries into the city, making it prosper further. The 1970s and early 1980s saw Joliet’s economy take a downward turn and its unemployment soar, but it bounced back from this decline and is again growing due to its traditional industries (Caterpillar, Inc. still manufactures here), as well as the more modern industries of education and tourism. The University of Saint Francis, Lewis University and Joliet Junior College all call the city home, and

thousands of people every year come to Joliet to visit the Chicagoland Speedway, the Harrah’s and Hollywood casinos, the Joliet Autobahn Country Club and to take in the history of this amazing city. The Joliet Area Historical Museum is located downtown, in a church structure dating back to 1909. The museum has many exhibits detailing the history of this remarkable city and even has a refurbished model of a 1909 Economy Motor Buggy on display. People come from everywhere in the country to learn not only about the story of Joliet, but also to learn a little more about the American experience as a whole. In few places is that experience captured as well as in the city of Joliet. For the long-distance traveler, a host of Amtrak rail lines run through Joliet Union Station, providing transportation to a number of Midwest cities, plus service to San Antonio, Texas (via the Texas Eagle Line). The internationally known Historic Route 66 has been a significant part of Joliet history, and the city and its residents have strived to preserve the Mother Road’s heritage here. This push in Route 66-related tourism stands as the city’s newest initiative, and it is certainly a prominent measure as the historic roadway has been revealed as the state’s second-most popular attraction – just behind the city of Chicago. Route 66 was intended to be the main street through towns, which had very little impact on Joliet in the beginning, according to the City Center Partnership. As time moved on, so did Route 66. On November 11, 1926, Route 66 was officially broken in, with Chicago Street chosen as the route through Joliet. In 2006, the city of Joliet and Joliet City Center Partnership joined forces with Route 66 historians and consultants to brainstorm and develop a Route 66 initiative movement. The initial plan involved Joliet applying for and receiving more than $150,000 in attractive development and marketing grants from the state of Illinois Bureau of Tourism. Ultimately, this funding was used to renovate the Route 66 Experience at the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

The grants were also applied in order to create further Route 66-themed attraction elements throughout the city, as well as for the marketing of these components through brochures, advertisements and the implementation of a website. The Route 66 Experience allows visitors to take a step back in time through a number of interactive exhibits and activities for guests of all ages. This is a free Route 66-themed exhibit, complete with drive-in theater, four-color murals, Blues Brothers photo opportunities, a car that travels the road on the ceiling and more. Adding to this was the development of Route 66 Park on Broadway Street, where guests are afforded access to informational Route 66 kiosks, Blues Brothers statues dancing on the roof of the

Rich and Kreamy Ice Cream Shop, the nine-foot Joliet Kicks shield sign and one of five “historic stop” gas pumps that can be discovered around the city. In February of 2008, the city of Joliet Visitors Bureau was the recipient of three state awards in recognition of its marketing excellence for the Route 66 Campaign at the Illinois Governor’s Conference on Tourism. Among its acknowledgments was the award for Best General Brochures for its Joliet Kicks on Route 66 Walking and Driving Tour Brochure, the award for Best Integrated Marketing Campaign for the 2007 Joliet Kicks Off on Route 66 event, and the award for Best Alternate Advertising for the Joliet Kicks on Route 66 Directional Signage Campaign. RESIDENTIAL LIVING in Joliet The City of Joliet has become a very popular place to live. Known for being both affordable and accessible, this area is a terrific location for those who want to be close to many amenities without paying exorbitant amounts for their homes. Its rich history, combined with more recent developments, makes for an interesting city that pays homage to its roots while still embracing the future. Variety is the spice of life they say, and Joliet has that covered when it comes to housing. The two-story home is seen fairly often, but also available are ranch, split-level and trilevel homes, as well as condominiums and townhouses. Multi-family dwellings are also included in the mix. In recent years, the city has had dozens of subdivisions go up in the area along I-55. “One of the great things about the Joliet real estate market is that there is such a wide variety of homes available for purchase,” said Karen Robertson of Coldwell Banker, “Every buyer is sure to find the home that meets their needs, vision and is in their price range.” She emphasized, “Joliet has it all; from the less expensive one-bedroom condo to the private wooded estate.” In terms of style, there is quite a range as well. One can see grand Victorian houses as well as more contemporary designs, depending on the area. The downtown section of the city has a historic district boasting many properties that have been around since the 1800s. As an older Illinois city, Joliet has its share of homes that have stood the test of time and have quite a bit of character. The fact that this area has had such growth has also meant a wide variety of newer homes as well. There really is something for

everyone here. Those searching for a true suburban lifestyle will find Joliet fits the picture. Amenities in the community include a variety of lovely parks, shopping, cultural opportunities and a great selection of restaurants. The city’s atmosphere is relaxed, and yet there is still plenty to do. Some of the newer subdivisions offer their residents perks such as tennis courts and pools – or on occasion, even a clubhouse. The accessibility to Chicago adds nearly limitless opportunities for cultural and entertainment venues. Each year, thousands of bicyclists, bird lovers, hikers, equestrians, picnickers, campers and students flock to the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s 22,000 acres of preserves and 127 miles of trails to enjoy the natural world around them. The District presents a wide variety of programs – many of them free – to educate, entertain and enlighten preserve visitors in all sections of Will County. From spring bird hikes in April to sled dog racing in January, the District highlights many species of flora and fauna as well as wind, water, snow and ice. Humans aren’t the only visitors the District entices. Five off-leash parks are ready and waiting for dogs whose owners are looking for an opportunity for them to romp and socialize. The dog parks – located in Homer Glen, Joliet, Naperville, Shorewood and Wilmington – are equally appealing to the humans who make new friends and learn more about dog breeds as they watch their canines cavort. Nestled in the District’s preserves are five unique visitor centers. Isle a la Cache in Romeoville celebrates the 18th century fur trade era, when the “Illinois Country” was home to French voyageurs and native Potawatomi. Plum Creek Nature Center in Beecher hosts many children’s programs and is home to resident reptiles, a working bee hive and an outdoor nature playscape. Monee Reservoir is an angler’s delight with a 46-acre lake and boat and sports gear rentals. Monee Reservoir is just one of 20 fishing spots in the District including Whalon Lake in Naperville, Rock Run Rookery in Joliet and Lake Chaminwood in Minooka. Fishing also is allowed at Lake Renwick Preserve – Turtle Lake Access in Plainfield. But only the magnificent herons, cormorants and egrets get to fish at the nearby Lake Renwick Heron Rookery Nature Preserve. Four Rivers Environmental Education Center, located where the DuPage, Des Plaines and Kankakee rivers meet to form the Illinois River in Channahon, hosts school groups in the spring and fall and offers facility rentals for banquets, meetings and conferences. The center also provides a picturesque setting for wedding ceremonies and receptions. Four Rivers is a model of green architecture, as is the Sugar Creek Administration Center, which is nestled in Sugar Creek Preserve in Joliet. Sugar Creek features a parking lot for equestrians who ride the 22-mile Wauponsee Glacial Trail, one of three District trails where horseback riding is allowed. While preserve visitors are exercising, celebrating or simply observing nature, Forest Preserve staffers are busy teaching schoolchildren, restoring land to its native state and planning for the future. The Joliet shopping experience continues to diversify, with both new and long-standing businesses located within various retail outlets. Major commercial corridors are discovered along Jefferson Street, Larkin Avenue, Collins Street, Essington Road, Route 30/Plainfield Road and within downtown Joliet. The downtown district remains a leading activity center in the region, experiencing much in the way of new development and improvement projects over recent times. The resurgence of the heart of Joliet includes the incorporation of new residential spaces, expanding entertainment and cultural avenues and exceptional business opportunities. A variety of current development projects are underway in downtown Joliet, as well, bringing enhanced vitality to both businesses and visitors. Downtown Joliet isn’t the only retail place experiencing recent revitalization efforts. The indoor Louis Joliet Mall has been a fixture on Mall Loop Drive since the 1970s. More than 100 shops and restaurants line the walls of Joliet’s largest indoor mall, positioned at I-55 and Route 30. The mall continues to adapt to keep up with the times, having invested in renovations and major additions over the last few years. In 2009, the mall unveiled its new, 14-screen Cinemark movie theater, offering first-run films in a modern, comfortable environment. Louis Joliet also added a new adjacent lifestyle center, Joliet Commons, in recent times. As the economy has improved, Joliet continues to make progress with new retail developments. The various redevelopment projects to existing locations and new additions such as the Joliet Commons and the forthcoming Town Center are important aspects of economic growth in the area. The interest in retail development in Joliet can only help local businesses, which have grown with the community – some for nearly a century. The community’s established businesses, along with many others, reap the benefits of Joliet’s status as America’s 14th fastest-growing city. Connection Since the early part of the decade, sports have claimed a prominent place in the Joliet entertainment world. Many believe the growth of sports organizations in the area has helped make Joliet an important attraction for neighboring communities. Mark Basso, founder of the Joliet Autobahn Country Club, says the city’s diverse entertainment options are part of its appeal. “Joliet is becoming an entertainment capital of the Midwest. There’s nowhere else you can go to get all this in a small area.” Basso’s Autobahn Country Club is built on the same concept as golf-oriented country clubs, except high-speed driving is the focus. Since 2004, the club’s private membership has grown to more than 350, and the public can take advantage of some of the Autobahn’s features, which are available through group bookings. “We have a fleet of go-karts that go 60 miles an hour, we rent cars and track by the hour.” Basso says the go-kart track is available for corporate events or private parties, and there are also options for those who want something faster than go-kart driving. “We also have a driving experience half-day program. We have a fleet of brand new BMWs, five of the new 135i coupes.” Basso says the half-day program includes an outing on the track. Ever since NASCAR’s Jimmy Johnson won the Tropicana Twister-300 in 2001, Joliet racing

fans have enjoyed a second high-speed sports option – the Chicagoland Speedway. This track features NASCAR and IndyCar competitions, and the 2008 season was the first to include night races. The stadium has a 75,000-fan capacity, free parking and a busy race schedule. According to the Chicagoland Speedway official site, 40 hospitality suites are available for groups and corporations. The hospitality package offers a great view of the speedway, closed-circuit race coverage, even pit tours when weather and schedule permit. The Chicagoland Speedway is co-located with the Route 66 Raceway, a staple for drag racing enthusiasts since 1998. Dubbed the first true “Stadium of Drag Racing,” Route 66 Raceway has a quarter-mile, 30,000-seat, stadium-style drag strip. Like the Chicagoland Speedway, it offers luxury suites to accommodate groups and corporate events. Fans of the Great American Pastime pack the seats at Silver Cross Field every season to take in a Joliet Slammers ball game. The Slammers are a continually solid team, most recently becoming the Frontier League Champions in 2011. Silver Cross Field also features the Joliet Sports Hall of Fame, which honors local sports heroes. When the weather turns colder and football season begins, Joliet Memorial Stadium is the longtime host for youth, high school and college gridiron games. The stadium has a capacity of

10,000 on traditional bench-style seating typical of most high school or small collegiate stadiums. Depending on the schedule you can see contests featuring youth football organizations and the Joliet Catholic Academy High School football team. Fans of college football can get tickets for the University of St. Francis games. Times have been good for Joliet sports fans since the early part of the decade, thanks to a growing number of professional teams and facilities. Each of the city’s sports entertainment options offer busy seasons with plenty of opportunities at the race track, football field and baseball diamond.

There’s no lack of the arts in Joliet. Visual art, dramatic performances, musical concert … the list goes on. Many unique venues make up the art scene. The area’s landscape is decorated with historic theaters, outdoor bandshells and impressive galleries. Here is a glimpse of just a few of the many experiences available in Joliet.

THE RIALTO SQUARE THEATRE

The Rialto Square Theatre is steeped in history, opening on May 24, 1926. The six Rubens brothers were responsible for making the vision into a reality along with the help of architects, a construction company and gifted artists. The outside of this amazing place is a sight to see, but the exquisite decor inside is up to royal standards, featuring Greek, Roman and Byzantine influences. What was once a silent movie theater and a venue for live Vaudeville performances, the Rialto has made a few changes since it opened its doors more than 80 years ago. In late 1981, the Rialto made the transition into a performing arts center to coincide with times. The change was a result of “the development of shopping malls and multiplex movie theaters,” said Randall Green, general manager. To help facilitate the evolution into a performing arts venue, a renovation project began. Dorothy Mavrich, president of the Rialto Square Arts Association, now the Cultural Arts Council of the Joliet Area, wanted to see the glory of the Rialto restored. As in the initial construction, many community members worked together to ensure that the Rialto would retain its original grandeur. The Rialto Square Theatre has seen many great performers grace the stage, “from the Vaudeville days, the Marx Brothers, Burns & Allen, later on Red Skelton, Liberace, Victor Borge, Barbara Mandrell and Bob Hope. Most recently, Tony Bennett, Bill Cosby, BB King, The Moody Blues, Chicago, REO Speedwagon, Doobie Brothers, Taylor Swift, Vince Gill and many, many more,” said Green. Walking into the Rialto Square Theatre is like walking back in time. This staple in the Joliet community has played an important role in its history and will continue to wow visitors for years to come. “People can always expect top headliner attractions, artists who are relevant today because they are still writing and performing new songs or program content. Our Broadway at the Rialto will bring in topquality musical theater attractions annually. BILLIE LIMACHER BICENTENNIAL PARK

Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park is a gem in Joliet. Who thought a park could be filled with so many avenues of art? Musical concerts and dramatic productions are just the beginning of what this part of nature offers. This venture began in the 1970s in an effort to celebrate the United States’ 200th birthday. The Bicentennial Committee was created to fashion a plan to commemorate this milestone, and Mrs. William C. Limacher was named chairman. A piece of land measuring five and one-third acres was to be the location for the park. This piece of land served as one of the community’s first streets. The committee consulted many local organizations, businesses and schools to plan the creation of the outdoor bandshell and indoor theater. Before construction began, Concerts in the Rough were held from 1973 until the completion of the bandshell in 1976 when the name of these Thursday evening concerts was changed to Concerts on the Hill. The park was growing and growing, and in the 1980s, two more pieces of land were purchased to continue with the development. In 1987, historic sites were commemorated with the creation of a historical walk noting events, homes and businesses. A few years later, in 1993, a scenic riverwalk was created, and only a couple of years after that a veterans memorial and mosaic were installed. The year 1996 brought the addition of historical murals. In 2000, the park was renamed Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park in honor of Limacher’s endless dedication. Not only has Limacher played a huge role in the creation of this park, but countless others continue to bring their talents every day. “The park was built for the people by the people,” said Limacher. Members of Joliet and surrounding communities make many events at the park possible. The Joliet Drama Guild plays a major role in the theatrical performances. Local school children and community organizations provide further entertainment in the way of concerts, variety shows and other productions. The American Legion band and the Joliet Montessori School sparkle with their musical talents.

The Joliet Downtown is a host to many community events throughout the year The Downtown Joliet Farmers Market brings together vendors, local businesses, and live entertainment to offer market-goers a wide variety of items for purchase while enjoying a stroll in historic Downtown Joliet. The Race Fan Rally is an annual single-day NASCAR fan fest held on the Thursday before the Sprint Cup races at Chicagoland Speedway in September. Race Fan Rally includes live music entertainment, vendors, beer tents, NASCAR driver appearances, a 50/50 raffle, race, show and classic cars on display and is concluded with a firework display. Light Up the Holidays Parade and Festival is held on the Friday following Thanksgiving each year. Activities begin downtown as early as 9:30 a.m., and include the Fantastic Fun Fair in the Joliet Area Historical Museum’s auditorium, as well as activities in the Joliet Public Library, Gji’s Sweet Shoppe, Jitters Coffeehouse, Chicken-n-Spice, Juliet’s, Tin Roof and more. The Rialto Square Theatre’s annual holiday festivities also adds to the holiday spirit, Downtown Joliet. Tree Lighting begins at 5:15 p.m. in Van Buren Plaza followed by the Light Up The Holidays Parade at 5:30 p.m.

Enhanced Opportunities for Lifelong Learning Education is paramount in the Joliet community, which is evidenced through the number of excellent learning institutions located within and closely surrounding the city. Everything from early childhood learning through graduate studies can be accessed without having to leave the greater Joliet area. JOLIET PUBLIC SCHOOLS DISTRICT 86 Empowering students “to become lifelong learners, responsible citizens and caring members of their communities” is the mission of Joliet Public Schools District 86. District 86 provides many opportunities for children to learn. In addition to language arts, mathematics, science, social science, fine arts, physical development and health instruction, the district provides early childhood instruction, full-day kindergarten, academic enrichment, bilingual education, before and after school and comprehensive special services programs. More than 11,250 children, early childhood through eighth grade, attend one of the district’s 21 schools. In addition, construction is currently underway for a new elementary school located on the campus of Gompers Junior High School on the east side of Joliet. More than 600 students

attend this school. Families have a choice to send their children to a neighborhood school or one of four magnet schools in District 86. Eisenhower Academy and Washington Junior High and Academy accept students in grades 1-8 who demonstrate average and above academic achievement and positive behavior. Forest Park Individual Education (I.E.) School and the I.E. program housed at Hufford Junior High School offer a program based on the Individual Education philosophy that provide students unique educational choices. The program offers academic, socialization and creative components, along with stressing the development of Responsibility, Respectfulness, Resourcefulness and Responsiveness. Student test scores continue to improve every year. Since 2004, District 86 student test scores have increased by 27.8 percent in mathematics and 20 percent in reading achievement. District

administrators, teachers and staff continue to learn new strategies and implement programs that will assist all children in overcoming the achievement gap. Extracurricular activities are available to all District 86 students. Band and orchestra begin in fourth grade and choir starts in sixth grade. In addition, basketball, cross country, soccer, volleyball and wrestling are offered to all junior high school students. Additional after-school activities at many schools include art, ballroom dancing, chess, homework and quilting clubs. Parents are encouraged to be involved in all District 86 schools by attending parenting sessions, family nights and parent organization meetings throughout the school year. JOLIET TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 204 With two campuses, Joliet Township High School District 204’s unique educational heritage combines the best of tradition with the best in modern technology. The Joliet Central Campus sits proudly in downtown Joliet. Its limestone structure at 201 E. Jefferson Street was built at the beginning of the 20th century and has been modernized over the decades. It serves as a stone-and-mortar symbol of opportunity. The Joliet West Campus, located at 401 N. Larkin Ave., grew out of the prosperous growth that has fueled Joliet since the 1940s. The expansive campus is a testament to managing growth while maintaining excellence. Together these two schools combine to form a district that has been praised by recent Illinois

State School Superintendents as “a Lighthouse” and as “an Honor Roll School.” Even though the halls of both schools are lined with state and national championship trophies for academics, music, athletics and vocational programs, the real story is much more ingrained in the fabric of the Joliet region. From its founding in 1899, the Joliet Township High School District was extraordinary. Joliet Junior College was located at the Central Campus, which makes the nation’s oldest junior college a unique part of the school’s treasured past. Students were offered six years of education, and seniors would graduate and move directly to JJC – at no cost to their families. This new reality was crafted for the immigrants who worked in the area’s mills, quarries and industrial facilities who had decided to make a home in Joliet. The children of those new Americans would have the chance to learn the skills that would give them a better life than their parents. In addition to math and science, students in the earlier days of JTHS could broaden their horizons by taking French and Latin classes. Specialty programs, such as Agriculture and Bookkeeping, made JTHS a leader in the academic community. There was an emphasis on preparing graduates to be contributing members of society who were ready to compete and contribute in the workplace. These words are still in the JTHS Mission Statement today. The Joliet Township High School District has continued to evolve and grow. Today, these comprehensive high schools have been reshaped

into Academies such as Human Services or Engineering and Technology. These “schools within a school” give today’s students a huge head start on their post-secondary pathway. They also benefit from lessons that are taught with an extra measure of relevance. Using practical education methods, the students are shown just how they will use subjects such as Algebra or Biology after they leave high school. With the addition of thousands of new residents to Joliet, the district has kept pace. Recent construction has added more than 60 classrooms at the two campuses, helping the district keep up with the demands of one of the nation’s fastestgrowing areas. JTHS has also completed the construction of two fully equipped field houses. These allowed the district to expand the physical education and sports programs at each campus. With award-winning academic programs and facilities designed to meet the needs for decades to come, the Joliet Township High School District also focuses on going that extra mile to help students maximize every opportunity. With continuing growth bringing in an influx of new residents, Joliet clearly necessitates a robust economic outlook to support those new residents. Specifically, in times when energy comes at a premium price and in an area where demand will only increase, business devoted to providing that energy to Joliet and beyond play a major role in supplying the area. One organization that has done a great deal toward stimulating the generating power for Joliet and much further is Exxon. Having opened the refinery in 1972, Exxon is coming upon its 44th anniversary for the site, the second-to-last refinery built in the U.S. Then as now, there were a scant number of refineries in the Midwest, so the opportunity to build somewhere in the area seemed clear. As to why Exxon chose Joliet in particular, “It was an attractive community to build in,” says Tricia Simpson of Exxon, with “access to water transportation for bringing in large components for the refinery [and a] skilled workforce for both constructing and running the refinery over time.” Exxon has taken a strong interest in improving the community. For example, Exxon has invested hundreds of millions of dollars toward an environmental project that will remove more than 90 percent of the sulfur dioxide from plant emissions. Further along those lines, Exxon has helped support a local junior high school begin an environmental club, one that allows students to do soil and water testing to ensure healthy levels of substances in both. Exxon is also a founding sponsor of Shoot for A’s, a campaign that funds high-tech equipment for the classroom. Besides Exxon, NRG Energy manages to power Joliet both literally and figuratively, as well. Located on over 450 acres of land on both sides of the Des Plaines River, the original plant had generated energy for the area since 1917. Contemporary stations at the plant opened more recently in 1959 and 1966. Nonetheless, NRG Energy remains a staple of the immediate and constantly expanding community. In fact, at full capacity, NRG Energy can power as many as 1.6 million households. »

Besides contributing $27 million to the community through payroll and benefits, NRG Energy has invested $23 million toward equipment reducing nitrogen oxide emissions into the air by more than 50 percent. Similar to Exxon’s community involvement, NRG has also sponsored or contributed to the Hill-Memorial Center after-school program, Joliet Township High School and Joliet Junior Honors Program Scholarships. Once again, besides

powering the community of the present, NRG Energy seeks to empower the people of the future to ensure more of the same. Caterpillar in Joliet also works toward not only providing the equipment for international construction, but developing the community, as well. Caterpillar has been a part of the community since 1951. The organization recently won the Governor’s Award for pollution control as a result of it changing processes from chrome plating to another kind of process that saved a lot of waste water that was being put into the river. This initiative also saved a lot of solid waste that Caterpillar had from the cleaning process. Steps like those ensure Joliet’s environmental future. One of Caterpillar’s largest investments in the community comes in the form of investing in its employees specifically. Caterpillar even goes so far as to invest in the families of employees, as it regularly promotes hiring family members. In a time where corporations seem more intimidating every day, Caterpillar shows how it can offer a consistent space for employees and their families for years to come. Any community requires attention to its economic situation to thrive, and Joliet has clearly developed businesses that can weather temporary economic woes and thereby continue to help the community as a whole. Investing in energy that people will always need to power their homes and transportation, Exxon and NRG Energy supply the community with not only its basic needs, but also a refuge from concerns that other areas may not have adequately planned for yet. Caterpillar, too, has helped Joliet citizens to remain there with long-term employment opportunities for the entire family. No matter what obstacles Joliet may face in the near future, businesses like Exxon, NRG Energy and Caterpillar will assuredly continue to help Joliet press on. ◆

Joliet residents are lucky to have great resources at their disposal to better their community. The following organizations give people the chance to improve their situation where they may not have been able to, giving them the option to become independent and vital members of the community.

STEPPING STONES RECOVERY CENTER

Stepping Stones Recovery Center offers support for people dealing with substance abuse issues. This not-for-profit corporation has an extensive list of services including counseling, support groups, life skills development, in- and outpatient treatment, family involvement and education, immediate treatment planning and continuing treatment planning. Those looking to enter the Stepping Stones Recovery Center residency program can benefit from short-term or long-term stays. Those awaiting admission can take advantage of interim services.

AGAPE MISSIONS, NFP

Agape Missions, NFP serves individuals dealing with HIV/AIDS. Placing people in permanent and transitional housing gives hope for a comfortable refuge. Counseling options include mental health, bilingual and substance abuse. Education and prevention are key elements. Case management presents a selection of assistance options and helps to create a plan for living with the disease. For those not affected by HIV/AIDS, resources and counseling are also available.

CORNERSTONE SERVICES, INC.

Cornerstone Services, Inc. exists to help the disabled to acquire the skills to lead fulfilling lives. Residential options encompass more intensive care to a primarily independent environment. A career program helps gain and preserve employment. Behavioral health and community services foster additional development.

LAMB’S FOLD CENTER FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN

Lamb’s Fold Center for Women and Children provides sanctuary for women and children who are in need of housing due to unexpected and unfortunate life situations. Transitional and permanent housing, as well as counseling and legal services are within reach through this nonprofit organization.

GUARDIAN ANGEL COMMUNITY SERVICES

Guardian Angel Community Services began as an orphanage in 1897, but it has since turned its focus into acting as a resource for struggling children and families. Children’s programs encourage success in the classroom and in society. The Exchange Club Center teaches parents important skills to help them cope with the challenges of everyday living. The Foster Care Program assists children in foster care to ensure a permanent family situation is established. Counseling, advocacy and emergency shelter are only a few of the other services offered.

Will County Center for Community Concerns works with low- and moderateincome families to instill the necessary skills and opportunities to become self-sustained. A number of grant programs take off some of the financial burden.
