The Douglas Morrisson Theatre is an outstanding venue for live stage entertainment. Owned and operated by the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, the theater company presents plays, musicals and concerts in the 250-seat facility. The visual arts are celebrated at facilities such as the Hayward Area Historical Society Center for Art and Culture, the Hayward Arts Council galleries, and the Sun Gallery. Adding to this is public art that can be discovered throughout the community, including stunning murals in the downtown area. California State University, East Bay and Chabot College offer concerts, theater, dance and art shows. Cal State East Bay is home to the University Theater, an art gallery and sculpture garden.

Additional historical sites include All Saints Catholic Church, a Spanish-Baroque style church constructed in 1912; the circa 1897 Meek Mansion; the “Old” City Hall, built in 1930; the Veterans’ Memorial Building, dedicated to fallen soldiers in 1932; and the Totem Pole at Weekes Community Park, erected in 1964 to depict the history of the Hayward area from 1849. Recreation in Hayward From open spaces and park sites to modern recreational facilities, Hayward-area residents have access to diversions of all kinds. The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District operates and maintains more than 100 facilities and park sites and offers hundreds of educational and recreational programs, classes and events. Highlights follow. • The 25-acre Oliver Sports Park has picnic facilities, children’s play area, and facilities for softball, soccer and basketball. • Kennedy Park welcomes families to enjoy pony and train rides, a merry-go-round and a petting zoo. • Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center offers a glimpse into the ecology of the San Francisco Bay estuary. • The Sulphur Creek Nature Center is a wildlife education and rehabilitation facility in a creek-side forest. • The Rowell Ranch Rodeo is a community favorite every spring. • The Hayward Plunge is a year-round indoor swimming facility that features swim lessons, public swim, lap swim, and water exercise. Part of the East Bay Regional Park District, Garin and Dry Creek Pioneer regional parks include a visitor center with blacksmith shop, picnicking areas, a 20-mile system of trails for hiking, horseback riding and fishing. Golfers Love Hayward Hayward has outstanding public and country club golf courses.

Hayward Plunge

The Hayward Recreation and Park District operates the Skywest and Mission Hills of Hayward golf courses. Skywest is a popular choice for its challenging 18 holes on a tree-lined course stretching 6,862 yards. The facility includes a driving range, practice green and a restaurant. Mission Hills is a 9-hole executive course that includes a two-deck lighted driving range. Both offer professional instruction and pro shops. Hayward is also home to TPC Stonebrae Country Club with its 18-hole, 7,200-yard championship course 1,500 feet above San Francisco Bay. The beautiful facility with outstanding vistas includes dining opportunities, practice facility, and a portion of the Bay Ridge Trail. Education in Hayward

hallmark of Hayward’s development as a city is its embrace of “cradle to career” learning and it is one of the few cities in California to have both a community college and a state university. It begins with the Hayward Unified School District, serving 20,000 students from kindergarten through high school. The district is comprised of 21 elementary schools, five middle schools, three high schools, an alternative high school, charter schools, an adult education center and a child care center for preschoolers. The district benefits from teaching partnerships with area colleges. Private school education includes 10 preschools and elementary schools. Moreau Catholic High School is a Holy Cross collegepreparatory institution where nearly all graduating students advance to higher education.

The Hayward campus of California State University, East Bay offers a nationally recognized freshman year experience, personalized instruction and expert faculty. Students choose from among more than 100 fields of study for which the university confers bachelors and masters degrees, as well as a doctorate in education. Named a “Best in the West” college, as well as a Best Business School, by the Princeton Review, Cal State East Bay is among the region’s foremost producers of teachers, business professionals and entrepreneurs, public administrators, health professionals, literary and performing artists, and science and math graduates. Life Chiropractic College West offers the doctor of chiropractic degree and is internationally recognized for leadership and innovation in chiropractic training.

Chabot College is a community college offering students associate degrees and coursework required for university transfer. Among Chabot’s 100 degree and certificate programs are opportunities to update job skills, discover new careers, or take classes for personal enrichment. Two-year job training programs include those in auto mechanics, nursing, firefighting, medical assisting, dental hygiene, accounting and machine tool work. The Occupational Work Experience Program is utilized by local businesses, industries and governmental agencies.

Other educational institutions serving Hayward include Carrington College, which offers certificate and associate degree programs toward health care careers; the University of San Francisco; and NCP College of Nursing, which offers programs in vocational nursing and medical assisting. Bay Valley Medical Group offers an array of primary and specialty medical care. Some of its services include internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, obstetrics and gynecology, urology, podiatry, radiology, laboratory and counseling. Hayward Wellness Center at the Southland Mall is part of Alameda Health System’s network of community-based ambulatory clinics that expand access to primary care and medical specialties. Hayward Wellness also provides services such as optometry and podiatry. Group visits include classes on healthy eating and living, and a demonstration kitchen. St. Francis Urgent Care in South Hayward offers a state-of-the-art facility with on-site lab and X-ray services. Board certified medical staff members are available weekdays, including evenings, and weekends, to provide immediate medical care. n 1843 the Mexican government gave soldier and surveyor Guillermo Castro almost 27,000 acres of land. He named it Rancho San Lorenzo and encompassed what is today Hayward and Castro Valley. Castro operated the ranch from his home which sat on the site of historic City Hall on Mission Boulevard.

In the meantime, more people came to the area and set up fruit orchards, cattle ranches, stores and other businesses. In 1860 the U.S. post office established a location at “Haywood” using William Hayward’s small store on A Street.
