The Edison Chamber of Commerce is proud to be the voice of business in Edison township, the fifth largest municipality in New Jersey. We also think it is the best community for families to raise and educate their children, for retail and hospitality businesses to thrive, and for major manufacturers, developers and shipping companies to locate and grow. We believe Edison is, in short, the best place to live, work and run a business in the state of New Jersey. Here in Edison we’re a short drive or train ride from both New York City and Philadelphia, at the nexus of six major state and national highways, just a few miles from Elizabeth Port, and right in the middle of the most skilled, educated and talented workforce in the world. The Chamber is here to help your business succeed in Edison, or to relocate here, and is eager to hear from you. You can visit our newly opened offices on the Amboy Avenue downtown business district, learn more about the community

on our website, or give us a call at (732) 738-9482. Our staff is ready to provide whatever assistance our members and new businesses need to grow in the new century. Welcome to Edison,

Nathan Rudy President, Edison Chamber of Commerce

m ayor ’s w elcome letter dison Township is dedicated to supporting our business community and to promoting sensible growth throughout our community. My Administration is working diligently to attract new businesses, both large and small, into town and to sustain our existing ones. The Township and the Chamber of Commerce are now hosting networking breakfasts on the first Tuesday of each month in the Edison Council Chamber to give business leaders an opportunity to interact with municipal officials and department heads. Please join us. To meet our larger goals, I am proud to say Edison has taken several significant steps to enhance our local economy over the past year. Edison recently agreed to plan-modifications that will kick-start redevelopment of the 98-acre former Ford Assembly plant on Route 1. In the coming months, we expect Hartz Mountain to move forward with its Edison Towne Square project.

www.edisonchamber.com

Edison also cleared the way for the Pennsylvaniabased Seagis Property Group to turn the former Frigidaire property at Vineyard Road and Route 27 into an ultra-modern, million-square-foot warehouse.

6

To encourage small business growth, Edison recently made changes to the Amboy Avenue Revitalization Zone – between Barton Street and Pierson Avenue – to allow ground-floor restaurants and other eateries including ones that offer live entertainment and bistro-style sidewalk service.

My Administration is committed to collaborating with business and always looking for new and better ways to assist our business community. The Chamber and its members are an invaluable resource and we welcome any opportunities to meet those economic goals.

These zoning modifications also allow the height of new commercial buildings on Amboy Avenue to be three-stories, creating more affordable rental space on upper floors. In turn, this should increase pedestrian traffic and help to support Amboy Avenue businesses. Recently, the Edison created a new “flexible business zone” along the south side of Woodbridge Avenue. This gives select property owners the ability to quickly convert their existing buildings to accommodate commercial, retail, professional office, warehouse or light industrial uses. Additionally, Edison hired a professional planning firm last year to analyze and identify the most promising locations to target redevelopment projects. We expect to see preliminary results in the coming months.

Respectfully,

Mayor Thomas Lankey

dison, New Jersey, has been ripe with technological progress and innovation since its early days. Despite a rich history in Central New Jersey, settled in the late 1600s, Edison is a community committed to the present day and future. Today, Edison is recognized among the leading communities in New Jersey and continues to earn high marks as an enviable place to live, raise a family and conduct business.

It is said Edison chose Menlo Park for his “invention factory” because it was the highest point along the Pennsylvania Railroad between New York and Philadelphia. While in Menlo Park, Edison invented items that led to more than 400 patents, including the phonograph, the electric railway and the incandescent bulb. Today, residents and visitors enjoy the Menlo Park Museum and the Edison Memorial Tower, a commemorative piece to honor Edison’s years at Menlo Park. Present day Edison offers both residents and businesses an unmatched quality of life led by features such as top-performing schools, safe neighborhoods, beautifully kept recreational spaces and outstanding business centers catering to a diverse array of industries. The regular museum hours are: Thursdays – Saturdays 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM 37 Christie St., Edison, NJ (732) 549-3299

www.edisonchamber.com

Edison was originally known as Raritan Township when it was established more than three centuries ago. It has been touched by the Revolutionary War, serving as a home base for the Continental Army and even seeing action as a battleground. The Kilmer US Army Base was the staging area for troops heading to Europe in WWII and the Korean War. But what Edison may best be known for is the home to Thomas Alva Edison’s worldchanging laboratories at Menlo Park.

7

The community has earned accolades from leading publications such as Money Magazine and Forbes for its unsurpassed lifestyle. Edison has been named the second most livable city in New Jersey and the fourth-safest place to live in the country, among other notable commendations.

www.edisonchamber.com

Government, academic and business leaders continue to work hard to ensure a strong and viable future for Edison. Continued efforts for new economic development and redevelopment of Edison’s more venerable areas are at the forefront of township priorities. Whether it’s for residential living or establishing new business operations, it is an ideal time to choose Edison as your new home.

Buildings owned by Federal Business Centers are designated a U.S. Foreign Trade Zone, meaning companies that import goods or raw materials can (a) defer import tariffs on the goods until such time as finished products are sold within the United States, and (b) avoid import tariffs altogether on finished goods that are reexported to countries outside of the United States.

The New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center, located on Sunfield Road in Edison, provides more than 155,000 square feet of exhibit space ideal for a wide variety of events. edu c ation ince the earliest days of Clara Barton’s school on Amboy Avenue and Thomas Edison’s laboratory, Edison has always been known for its outstanding educational opportunities. The fifth largest district in the New Jersey with more than 15,000 students, Edison public educational system contains two high schools, four middle schools, 11 elementary schools and two pre-schools. In September 2014, New Jersey Monthly Magazine ranked JP Stevens High School as 30th and Edison High School as 135th out of 335 high schools within the state. The rankings are based on school achievement which is determined by the Advanced Placement courses offered and taken.

www.edisonchamber.com

The District boasts 19 AP courses at both schools with over 900 students taking a total of 1700 exams. Student performance is also high-ranking including 93.8% of the District’s students scoring 3 or more on the AP Exams, SAT scores exceeding State average and graduation rates well above the state average. JP Stevens and Edison High School are both accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Each year graduates from both of Edison’s high schools get accepted into the nation’s top colleges and universities.

20

Students in Edison’s public schools are exposed to 21st Century learning as all are prepared to be college and career ready. The District’s commitment to technology includes all classrooms in grades Pre-K through 8 utilizing interactive Promethean Boards, and high school classrooms outfitted with Smart Boards, Promethean Boards or Proximas. The media centers in all District schools have been redesigned and upgraded to include the latest computers and e-readers. In September 2014, the District began its one-to-one initiative, with students in grades 3 through 5 receiving Chromebooks as the first step towards bringing content to students in a digital format rather than traditional print. Students in grades 6 through 8 will received Chromebooks in September 2015.

romoting health and wellness among residents and area employers is important to Edison Township. The healthcare industry – including independent physicians, group practices and local hospitals – is vital to the economic stability of our community, remaining a stable force through recent economic downturns.
