What would fall be without pumpkin? We had a little fun and decided to share with you ways to “Get Your Pumpkin On” this season!

In honor of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to share what the local business community is doing to show its support and how you can get involved. We will also take a look at a variety of different team-building activities offered in the area, giving companies an alternative to the typical “holiday party” and an opportunity to provide their employees with a valuable experience to create a united workforce.

Also in this issue we visit crowdfunding for start-ups, a scorecard of our elected officials, 5 Fundraising Tips for Nonprofits as well as an inside look at three local businesses: IllusionQuest Studios, Let’s Create Something and Luna Gardens.

Another important aspect of creating a strong workforce, is understanding who our workforce is. For the first time ever, employers are a workforce comprised of five generations. ccording to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, â&#x20AC;&#x153;breast cancer is one of the leading health crises for women in the United States; one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.â&#x20AC;? The first step we can take in fighting breast cancer is to educate ourselves and others on the disease. Awareness is a powerful tool and can go a long way in early detection of the disease which can be critical to survival. As we enter into the month of October, you might be wondering what our business community does to show its support and how you can get involved. Many of our local businesses are making considerable strides to show their support and help educate the community on services available to both individuals and their families who are suffering from breast cancer. Legislative Scorecard By Adam Haverstock, Director of Government Affairs & Tourism

he mission of all Chambers of Commerce is to grow business. Our purpose – the reason we exist – is to make business better at every level. From large corporations to regional employers and entrepreneurs just starting out – we want businesses to do better. One method of achieving this is through Government Affairs. Put simply, government affairs is the Chamber of Commerce telling the government what they can do to make it easier for you to grow your businesses. This occurs at all levels from the City Council all the way to the President of the United States. At your local Chamber, we spend time communicating with your state and federal legislative members. Specifically, the Conejo Valley is CONGRESSWOMAN JULIA BROWNLEY Does Not Vote to Support Business

Being in the minority party in Congress, Julia Brownley has little ability to influence policy in Washington DC. However, we did ask her to support the Fast Track Trade Legislation proposed by President Obama that would make it easier to import and export products to the Asian Continent. She voted twice to oppose this legislation.

represented by Congresswoman Julia Brownley (Democrat), State Senator Fran Pavley (Democrat) and Assemblywoman Jacqui Irwin (Democrat). Note that small portions of the Conejo Valley are also represented by Congressman Ted Lieu (Democrat) and Assemblyman Richard Bloom (Democrat), but the way districts are drawn, both of these members are based in Los Angeles and have little interest in interacting with Conejo Valley businesses. All politicians tell you they support business, but do they really? The 2015 Legislative Session is finished (special sessions excluded) and the Government Affairs Committee of the Chamber requested that your representatives support their businesses with their votes on some key matters. Here is how they did:

STATE SENATOR FRAN PAVLEY Sometimes Votes to Support Business

State Senator Fran Pavley’s policy priorities are environment, education and people with disabilities. She is sponsoring SB 32, an environmentthemed regulation bill which would build upon the regulations created in her landmark law, AB 32. We did ask her to support SB 593 (Airbnb bill) and AB 857 (Tax Credit for Diesel Truck Conversion) and she voted in favor of both. We also asked for her opposition to AB 1017. As of deadline she had not yet voted on this bill.

The Conejo Valley is represented at the legislative level by all Democrats, and Democrats generally choose social and environmental justice over business development. However, this report card shows that political party is not the only indicator of a politician’s support for business. As your Chamber, we will continue to work for a vibrant business climate in Conejo Valley and to promote pro-business candidates.

ASSEMBLYWOMAN JACQUI IRWIN Votes to Support Business

Assemblywoman Irwin campaigned successfully to election victory last year as a Pro-Business Democrat, which is largely considered an oxymoron in politics since Democrats traditionally side with organized labor instead of businesses. In spite of this, Assemblywoman Irwin has walked the talk and voted to support the Chamber on several bills despite taking some heat from her Democratic colleagues and traditional political allies. Most notably, Assemblywoman Irwin voted against AB 1017, which would make it a crime to ask people about their salary history. She also supported AB 67, which would require double pay for employees who work on Thanksgiving or Christmas.

undraising is often as scary to some as public speaking or running a marathon. The reality is while it may seem daunting and uncomfortable to ask for money, it can be an incredibly rewarding experience as you mobilize resources to advance philanthropy for your favorite cause. Conquering the fear of fundraising involves five key steps that will assist you in cultivating and sustaining long-term donors.

#1: ANALYZE Whether you are a professional fundraiser or a volunteer, you need to review your data to look at trends in giving to your organization. If available, analyze giving trends for the past five years and prioritize relationships based on the size of gift or potential. Rank the individual or company and tier your list accordingly. Remember that retaining your current donors will take significantly less time with greater results than trying to acquire new ones.

#2: PLAN This step involves how you will have conversations with your stakeholders. Consider some of the following questions when you meet with them. What are your philanthropic goals? What role do you want us to play in delivering this vision? What do you wish we would do more of? Stop doing? In other words, Customer Service 101. The other piece to the planning is to take a long look internally. What type of fundraising are you and/or your volunteers engaged in to generate resources for the organization? Are you episodic, short-term or one-time (food drive, events)? Are you on-going (workplace campaign, sustaining donors, committee volunteer)? What is your leadership giving level and do your volunteers have a fundraising give/get? Answering these questions will assist you in your planning as you recruit, train and engage your volunteers to assist you with the next step.

#3: EXECUTE

#5: INFORM

Now it’s time to execute all of the hard work that you’ve put in during the analysis and planning stages. You have your list and you’re ready to listen to your customers and offer them compelling ways to give now and all year long. Ideally, you want to create a menu of all the opportunities the donor can engage in throughout the year, so you’re not soliciting them multiple times. Execution ideally should be face-to-face. Fundraising isn’t so much about raising funds, as it is about developing relationships with others who share a similar passion for your work. Focus on your relationships, and the money will follow. While email, mail or phone may seem easier and more efficient, it’s not in the long run. The execution step should also be carried out as a team effort of staff and volunteers. Donors especially want to see the volunteers who are taking the time out of their day to assist the organization. Fundraising is a team sport and building partnerships with like-minded, caring individuals makes it that much more fun.

Lastly, you need to inform your donors. Just like the fourth step of thanking, informing is a year-round process. This is where a good marketing and communications plan comes into play. You want to create a donor touch system such as a monthly or quarterly newsletter highlighting stories of those who were impacted by the organization, informs the donor of where their money went to and why it is important. Another piece and resource generator is a quarterly direct mail that highlights key opportunities and initiatives for the donor to engage in with a personal message from the Executive Director and/or Board Chair. Best of all is an annual report that highlights key accomplishments and financial transparency. This demonstrates the organization is serious about running an effective and efficient organization and willing to share as much information as possible.

#4: THANK This step is one that far too many nonprofits take for granted; thanking the donor. Giving thanks needs to be a year-round process and critical to donor retention. Go the extra mile and set your organization apart from the others. Hand-sign letters, send personal cards from the Executive Director and set up “thank-a-thons” with volunteers to simply thank donors for their gift with a personal call. After every face-to-face meeting, I send out a handwritten card thanking them for their time and always with a non-metered postal stamp. The details make the difference and donors will remember them. This step is also a lot easier than all the work that you put into steps 1-3, so enjoy it!

These steps are just a sampling of the many ways in which a nonprofit can improve its fundraising model and donor relationships. What can you do in your organization right now to improve the individual engagement experience? Make sure you analyze, plan, execute, thank and inform. You’re on your way to making significant improvements and those affected by your efforts will be forever grateful. RAISING CAPITAL BY COMMITTEE

ay back in the stone ages of business – pre-2010 – there were two viable options for raising the vital capital that was needed to turn your idea into a thriving business. You could go for gold if you could persuade a venture capitalist to fund your vision. If that was not realistic, you might win the battle of enticing a few angel investors to contribute smaller (but still very large) sums until you hit your goal. Either way, it was a time-consuming long shot of a task. It didn’t matter if you knew that you had a groundbreaking innovation as the centerpiece of a brand new, revenue-generating, profit-maximizing, American-dreammaking business. Professional investors like sure things,

and with so many entrepreneurs pitching their businesses alongside yours, VCs and angel investors were extremely difficult to attract. Enter the internet. As the collective band-width of the web became increasingly saturated with expressed desires that the proverbial “they” create some product to fill this need or that, savvy entrepreneurs began asking these individuals to put a little skin in the game. Crowdfunding exploded onto the start-up scene, giving small businesses and innovators a new way to raise the hundreds of thousands of dollars they need, $25 at a time.

HOW CROWDFUNDING WORKS In many cases, business owners can raise capital without surrendering any control of their beloved company. Donation models, such as Kickstarter, IndieGoGo and GoFundMe, help connect businesses with people willing to contribute $10 or $20 purely because they are intrigued by the product or who would be willing to prepurchase a unit before production even begins. For example, Coolest Cooler, an innovative spin on the standard ice chest, needed to raise $50,000 to begin production. They took to Kickstarter, asking for donations of $5 (which came with a sincere “Thank You”), $25 (which came with a branded Solo cup), or $55 (branded Solo cup and branded t-shirt) to help get the project started. Backers could also pre-order a cooler for $165. Over 62,000 people pledged over $13 million to help get the project started. Over $20,000 of that was just from people donating so that they could begin production. Let that sink in for a second. This company could not take the financial risk of beginning production, so they asked strangers on the Internet to give them money. Internet users nationwide donated $20,000 and then pre-ordered well over $13,000,000 worth of coolers. The company never had to determine if it was worth beginning production. Thousands of customers just pulled out their credit cards and begged for a cooler whenever it was produced. EQUITY CROWDFUNDING For those who do not mind parting with a bit of their ownership, equity crowdfunding allows the public to finance new companies in small chunks in exchange for stocks or shares. Companies like CrowdFunder and FundWisdom essentially allow small businesses to go public without going through the painful process of trading on the NYSE, NASDAQ, etc. In fact, SeedInvest, a platform for venture capitalists to largely fund promising startups, was funded using an equity crowdfunding platform to the tune of over $4 million.

WHY IS CROWDFUNDING SO SUCCESSFUL? Two things contribute to the astounding success of the crowdfunding phenomenon. First is the social aspect. People like to feel like they are part of a larger purpose and a special group, connected with one another. To understand how important this is to people, look at the enormous success of social media sites like Facebook or Twitter. Crowdfunding platforms and entrepreneurs leverage their social understanding by using entertaining videos and compelling stories to pull potential donors or investors into their “community,” creating an atmosphere of camaraderie among their backers and offering the new product to the investors first. Investing in successful campaigns validates the contributor’s decision to donate and encourages them to search for another campaign to become involved with. The thrill of watching a product or company you have emotionally invested in succeed is much like watching a favorite sports team win a game. It is fun to help somebody else when you believe in them. Plus, you get to watch the success or failure unfold in front of you for minimal investment. The second big contributor is the low-risk aspect. Investing $10 or $20 is an easy decision for most people. In addition, crowdfunding platforms set a time limit to raise the minimum amount of capital needed to produce the promised goods. For example, let’s say you pledge $10 toward a campaign that needs to raise $150,000 by the end of the month to mass produce a snazzy pen that you really, really want. At the end of the month, if that company raises only $145,000, you get your $10 back and you can find another pen company to fund. Unlike investing $500,000 in an unproven startup, the financial risk in these small donations or investments is miniscule at worst. Startup capital of the future is here. Our free market found a way to let future consumers become casual investors, ensuring that entrepreneurs receive the proper funding to make a product that will certainly sell (or has already been sold). Americans have found a new way to realize the American dream.

CHALKBOARD MENUS Q&A WITH FOOD COLUMNIST LISA MCKINNON ConejoView: Lisa, thank you for

taking for taking time to talk with us. I know that, as a journalist, you’re always on deadline! You write one of the most popular columns in the Ventura County Star: “Café Society.” What was the vision for this column?

CV: Is there more foodie activity in some cities?

Lisa McKinnon: The column

was in place when I joined the Star in 1992. It was launched by an entertainment editor who named it after a 1930’s-era New York nightclub that booked AfricanAmerican musicians at a time when few other clubs would. “Café Society,” in those days, focused on a collection of short newsy items on everythingfrom a new cocktail at a local bar to a celebrity sighting.

LM: It cycles, but right now it’s Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village. Renovation brings a lot of activity. CV: How are the restaurants that opened during the recession doing now?

LM: It’s not all restaurant glamour and caviar limes. I respect food writers who focus on food equality stories. I like to understand what’s happening with farm workers and pesticides, who gets up at 3 a.m. to make it happen. I focus beyond the trendy; why DOES everyone have chalkboard menus all of a sudden? It’s more than what’s at the top of YELP. CV: “Open, Shut and In-Between” has a cult following all its own!

LM: An opening, closing, a “coming along”: that’s news, there’s competition for it and you don’t want to sit on it. Closings are like an accident on the freeway; everyone wants to know why. CV: Do you have plans for Café Society or other columns?

LM: Last year, we introduced a separate version of

LM: I’m in awe of people who jump in to owning a restaurant. For many, restaurant ownership is a dream but being a professional in another field isn’t the same. You’re going to get your heart broken. Sometimes when you go into a restaurant, you can feel it in your bones – they’re not going to make it. Some did it smart: they were bootstrappy (is that a word?). Some started too big.

CV: Why has Café Society become such a must-read?

“Café Society” in the

entertainment section that publishes every Friday. It focuses on a single event or opening. I also write “Five Foodie Things to Do This Weekend,” a website-only column that’s a quick guide to festivals, freebies or lastminute restaurant openings.

CV: What do the success stories have in common?

LM: The owners are present. There is graciousness. They hire the right people – friendly without being overbearing; they hit that right. There’s cleanliness without smelling Pinesol, fair pricing and an effort to use something local. CV: Café Society provides solid economic development to the restaurants in the community.

LM: That may very well be true but for me, the column’s true reason for being is to give the reader information that is important to them; serving the readers is my main goal.

or the first time in history, today’s workforce is comprised of four generations who are challenged with the task of learning how to effectively work side by side. Each of these generations share a common set of formative events and trends which shaped their skills, values and communication styles. As an employer, how do you relate and motivate such a dynamic workforce? UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENCES Surprise! We’re not actually going to explain all the differences about each generation (we made a chart for that). Instead we want to focus on what understanding the differences really means. When we categorize people by their age group, we tend to make some pretty damaging generalizations about what we think someone will like/dislike, what knowledge they have and their ability to learn something new. Although the chart is useful and provides some good insight as to what those individuals were exposed to during their developmental years and common characteristics, it is not definitive.

Understanding the differences means you acknowledge these differences exist and figure out how to use them to your advantage. Four generations working side by side means our labor pool is stronger than it has ever been. We now have a richer pool of talent spanning decades of social, political, economic and technological transitions. A workforce with this much combined knowledge can be incredibly hard to manage, but if it’s managed effectively the workforce can thrive. TIPS FOR MANAGING GENERATIONS • get to know your employees • How well do you really know your employees? Do you know what they want out of their jobs; what matters in their lives; what inspires them? Getting to know your employees on an individual basis provides you with the tools to effectively motivate and keep your employees engaged. All generations want to feel valued and that their contributions are recognized, so when it’s time to reward your employees make sure it reflects what that individual’s priorities and preferences are.

Consider revamping your employee orientation to include group discussions about generational differences and common issues in the workplace1. However, make sure this education is continued beyond an employee’s initial training period and possibly integrate a mentorship program into the work-place. Pairing different generations together to work on a project helps employees understand and respect each other, but also ensures that their skill sets and knowledge and transferred. • publicize career opportunities • As Baby Boomers continue to postpone retirement and with almost 1 in 3 American workers being Millennials, it isn’t uncommon for younger employees to manage someone much older than them2. It’s important for employers to make it abundantly clear that career opportunities and horizontal growth is based on performance and productivity and not solely on seniority of the position. Although generations do not tend to radically change the way they view the world, they do continue to learn and grow. Communicating that career development opportunities are equal for all generations

regardless of age not only helps employee satisfaction, but also helps reduce turnover rate and training costs3. • analyze human resource strategies • With a workforce comprised of so many different age groups, it’s important for employers to take a look at their current human resource strategies and make sure their employees’ needs are met. Different generations hold different values depending on what stage of life they are in. For example, Generation X is most likely looking for good health care coverage and 401(k) options while Millennials are generally more concerned with receiving ample vacation days. This also applies to compensations – analyze the current marketplace and make sure that what you are paying your employees is in line with industry standards. Following these basic tips for managing generations can help employers retain their dynamic and talented multi-generational workforce. Continue studying your employees and be flexible about adopting new policies and practices that appeal to each generation. Taking the time to really understand these differences can help minimize potential tension and conflict while enabling you to capitalize on the strengths that each generation brings to the workplace.
