Mental health needs of Black and Hispanic girls often go unmet. This Waukegan group wraps them in support.

On a sunny but brisk November afternoon inside Robert Abbott Middle School in Waukegan, six eighth grade girls quickly filed into a small but colorful classroom and seated themselves in a circle.

Yuli Paez-Naranjo, a Working on Womanhood counselor, sported a purple WOW T-shirt as she led the group in a discussion about how values can inform decisions.

“Do you ever feel like two little angels are sitting on each of your shoulders, one whispering good things to you, the other whispering bad things?” Paez-Naranjo asked the girls. The students nodded and giggled.

At the 50-minute WOW circle, girls have a chance to set aside the pressures of the school day, laugh with and listen to one another, and work through personal problems. The weekly meeting is the centerpiece of individual and group therapy that WOW offers throughout the school year to Black and Hispanic girls, and to students of all races who identify as female or nonbinary, in grades 6 to 12.

Created in 2011 by Black and Hispanic social workers at the nonprofit organizationYouth Guidance, WOW’s goal is to build a healthy sense of self-awareness, confidence and resilience in a population that is often underserved by mental health programs.

Youth Guidance offers WOW to about 350 students in Waukegan Community Unit School District 60, which serves the industrial town of about 88,000. Just over 93 percent of the district’s 13,600 students are Black or Hispanic, and about 67 percent come from families classified as low income.

The program also serves students in Chicago, Boston, Kansas City and Dallas.

WOW counselors work with school-based behavioral health teams, administrators and teachers to identify students with high stress levels who might benefit from the program.

Recent research shows that WOW works: At a time whenteen girls’ mental health is in crisis, a 2023 University of Chicago Education Lab randomized control trial found thatWOW reduced PTSD symptoms among Chicago Public Schools participants by 22 percent and decreased their anxiety and depression.

Multiple hurdles, including funding, counselor burnout and distrust of mental health programs stand in the way of getting WOW to more students. But one way the program overcomes impediments is by bringing the program to the place students spend most of their time — school.

Paez-Naranjo, who is so well-liked among Abbott students that even kids who aren’t in the program seek her out, posed a question to the group.

“Let’s talk about positive and negative consequences of certain decisions. How about fighting?” she asked.

“The only positive outcome is you may find out how strong you are,” said Deanna Palacio, one of the girls.

“Why fight when you can talk it out?” asked another student, Ka’Neya Lehn.

“Right? What’s the point?” said a third girl, Ana Ortiz.

Nacole Milbrook, Youth Guidance chief program officer, said WOW was developed to address often overlooked needs among Hispanic and Black girls. “Girls have been left out (of mental health support initiatives), mainly because they are not making trouble,” she said.

A baseline study of over 2,000 girls in Chicago’s public schools, conducted by the University of Chicago Education Lab team, found “staggeringly high” rates of trauma exposure: Nearly one third of the participating young women had witnessed someone being violently assaulted or killed, and almost half lost someone close to them through violent or sudden death. Some 38 percent of girls in this group showed signs of PTSD, double the rate of service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Paez-Naranjo and fellow WOW counselor Te’Ericka Kimbrough, who works at Waukegan Alternative/Optional Educational Center, have supported students who have suffered sexual assault. Some participants in their circles are teen parents. Others are trying to resist negative peer pressure. Still others are in families that are struggling financially.

BY BEING embedded in the schools such as Robert Abbott Middle School in Waukegan, Working on Womanhood counselors say they can build deeper bonds with the students in their mental health support program.

Compared to other students, Black and Hispanic students have a harder time getting mental health support in school. In-school mental health support targeted to girls, especially evidence-based, sustained programs like WOW, is scarce or nonexistent in many public schools.

Even scarcer is mental health support from providers who can give culturally responsive care. Only 5 percent of U.S. mental health providers are Hispanic. Just 4 percent are Black.

Sally Nuamah, associate professor of urban politics in human development and social policy at Northwestern University, said the tendency of adults to view Black youth as more adult-like than their white peers can shroud the mental health needs of Black chil-

dren. In addition, the girls’ own positive behavior can mask their needs: In a study of the WOW program, participants were found to have strong school attendance and at least a B average, even as more than a third showed signs of post-traumatic stress disorder.

“They are perceived as resilient and possessing grit,” Nuamah said. “This obscures the real mental health needs of students of color and perpetuates institutionally racist policies because these students are not perceived as needing the same resources.”

Serving students where they are physically present nearly 200 days per year is one way to fill the too-often unmet need for support, Nuamah said.

Laurel Crown, Youth Guidance senior research and evaluation manager, said the nonprofit is working to figure out just what parts of the program work best. End-ofschool-year participant surveys, which use measures similar to those used in the Education Lab study, suggest that the relationships developed between WOW counselors and participants are a key reason the program is effective.

“Our theory of change is that WOW works because … (students) are attending this incredibly powerful support group every week and this support person is there every day in the school for them,” Crown said.

WOW counselors are “systemically engaged” in the schools where they are based, said Fabiola Rosiles-Duran, WOW program supervisor for Waukegan. They stay informed about whole-school dynamics by being part of behavioral health team and allstaff meetings.

Counselors Kimbrough and Paez-Naranjo added that daily access to teachers and staff provides wraparound support for their students. The counselors’ presence also helps them respond to acute situations immediately and follow up on student progress each school day.

“If I need extra support with a student, I can lean on the school behavioral health team,” Kimbrough said. She added that if she has a student in crisis, being able to see that student regularly helps her know if their interventions are working.

Providing intensive support to students every school day can be emotionally taxing for WOW counselors. Youth Guidance provides group training and individual support to help counselors maintain their own emotional health.

During their first year on the job, counselors participate in three hours of curriculum training each month plus three days of refresher courses. Many training activities mirror those the counselors will later use with their students.

WOW leaders also check in every weekday to offer support to the counselors. Those new to WOW also attend a two-day, threenight retreat that “helps counselors and staff

This year marks the start of the Illinois tollway’s transition to I-PASS sticker tags instead of the familiar hard-case transponder.

The new technology is cheaper and smaller than the traditional boxes, said officials, who plan a gradual roll-out of the “next generation” of toll collection devices. And unlike transponders, there will be no deposit fee.

The “tollway is continuing to adopt new tolling technology as it evolves, and I-PASS sticker tags mark the latest advance in toll collection,” Executive Director Cassaundra Rouse said.

“Sticker tags are being adopted by toll agencies across the country and by the Illinois tollway as they provide a convenient, reliable and less expensive travel experience for our customers.”

Here’s an overview of what’s next.

Q: When can I get a sticker?

A: By the end of January, I-PASS stickers should be available at customer service centers at the tollway’s headquarters and oases. Later on in February, I-PASS users should be able to request stickers at Jewel-Osco stores and Road Rangers, in the Rockford area, as well as online.

The tollway also plans to offer stickers at the Chicago Auto Show next month.

Q: Do I have to switch now?

A: There’s no rush. “Existing transponders will continue to work as designed on the tollway and our E-ZPass partners’ facilities. Customers will not be required to switch if they have a working transponder,” spokesman Dan Rozek said.

Q: What about traveling to other states?

A: “The introduction of I-PASS Sticker Tags is being done in coordination with other E-ZPass agencies and will ensure that beginning in 2024 our customers have continuity in service wherever they travel” Rozek said.

E-ZPass members include 19 states and over 50 agencies.

Q: How does it work?

A: “I-PASS Sticker Tags use radio frequency identification (RFID). There is no battery and they last until you remove them from your vehicle,” he noted.

Q: What about the deposit on my existing transponder?

A: “The $10 transponder deposit will be transferred into I-PASS customers’ pre-paid toll accounts once a new I-PASS sticker tag is registered to the account,” Rozek said.

Q: Where do I put the sticker?

A: “Similar to transponders, I-PASS sticker tags should be placed on the windshield at least an inch from the roof line and from the rearview mirror post. When customers order or receive sticker tags, instructions for placing the tags will be included,” he explained.

Q: Can I move the sticker from car to car?

A: No. If you peel it off, the sticker stops working. The devices “are like your license plate or city sticker, and are not designed to be moved between vehicles.

Because of the reduced cost to the tollway, I-PASS sticker tags will be available without a deposit required, so customers can obtain sticker tags for each vehicle tied to the same I-PASS account at no additional charge,” Rozek said.

Q: Can I throw out my old transponder?

A: “I-PASS customers will be asked to dispose of transponders in an environmentally sound way, not discarded in the trash. The tollway will have a link on its website indicating businesses and recycling centers that will take used transponders. Customers also can return transponders to customer service centers,” Rozek said.

Q: Is sticker technology new?

A: California introduced stickers back in 2019 and numerous states are now offering them to drivers.

Speaking of the Chicago Auto Show, it opens at McCormick Place on Saturday, Feb. 10, and runs through Monday, Feb. 19.

figure out what’s happening within ourselves,” said Ngozi Harris, Youth Guidance director of program and staff development, “so we have the fuel to do this work.”

One study found that the multiple layers of support WOW offers students and staff, at a cost of about $2,300 per participant,are cost-effective. Still, that can amount to a significant portion of a district’s or school’s annual budget.

But Jason Nault, Waukegan CUSD 60’s associate superintendent of equity, innovation and accountability, said WOW is well worth the cost. Earlier this year, the district’s Board of Education approved a two-year extension of its contract with WOW and its counterpart for male students, Becoming a Man, at a cost of $4.2 million.

Nault said data Youth Guidance collects at the end of each school year shows WOW students are less depressed and anxious, more self-confident and have less post-traumatic stress.

Yet multiple implementation challenges exist for WOW and other school-based student support programs. One is that the work of counselors is isolating and can lead to psychological burnout, said Inger Burnett-Zeigler, associate professor of psychology at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

“There is significant and chronic and traumatic stress the WOW counselors experience,” she said. Burnett-Zeigler is working with WOW to develop and test an evidence-based mindfulness intervention to support counselors.

Another barrier experienced by programs like WOW is that, according toresearch, Hispanic and Black families are more reluctant to seek out mental health support and treatment than other ethnic and racial groups.

The WOW program works to build trust not only with the students, but with their parents and family members.

“Families of color have a tendency to not name mental health issues as mental health issues,” said Milbrook, the chief program officer for the organization that oversees WOW. “Seeking treatment still has a stigma, even for children.”

Milbrook said the school-based setting is key for destigmatizing both mental health conditions and treatment.

“Being in school and participating in the groups with other students, understanding that you’re not the only person dealing with

these same problems, and talking about them in ways that don’t feel like their idea of traditional therapy” all help, she said.

Also essential, Milbrook added, is fostering a sense of belonging. “We give the participants WOW T-shirts, and now they can walk around the school identifying as Working on Womanhood girls,” she said. “All of a sudden, nobody is ashamed to be in this group.”

Deanna, the Abbott eighth grader, added that the sense of belonging WOW fosters has helped her feel less lonely.

“You feel heard and understood here,” she said.

Although the school setting presents advantages for WOW, it can also involve implementation challenges. Youth Guidance’s Harris said that both WOW staff and school staff want positive outcomes for WOW students, but WOW’s healing-centered approach might conflict with a school’s discipline policy. So, school staff might initially be wary of program staff and counselors.

Schools also sometimes underestimate the expertise of the counselors, and sometimes even ask them to take on tasks like cafeteria monitoring that are not their responsibility.

“It takes a year of building relationships, really being intentional about how to collaborate with the school,” said Harris. “Until that trust is built, you are an outsider.”

Paying for the program is another challenge. Although Waukegan CUSD 60 covers all program costs, most districts do not.

Youth Guidance relies primarily on philanthropic support to pay for its programs.

Youth Guidance is less likely to tap into public funding sources like Medicaid because the public assistance program’s cumbersome processes can lead to higher program costs and even threaten the trust WOW builds with students and their families.

For example, WOW counselors often make numerous phone calls to parents, or visit them at home. It’s time well spent, Milbrook said, but it’s not financially productive.

Counselors can only bill their time to Medicaid after a parent signs a consent form.

Despite some of these challenges, WOW leaders and counselors consider the Waukegan WOW program a success.

“As a whole (group), I’ve seen a decrease in anger and fights,” said Paez-Naranjo, the Abbott Middle WOW counselor.

identity as a young woman. She, like her other classmates in the program, returned for a second year after starting WOW as seventh graders.

“Before I came here, I was not finding myself at all,” Ana said. “I wanted to know, how is it, being a woman? I wanted to know what other girls’ opinions and perspectives were.”

Paez-Naranjo said she has seen Ana’s growth since last school year.

“Ana has stepped out of her comfort zone a lot more. She feels more confident to share

intimate details about her life and is willing to support anyone in need,” said Paez-Naranjo.

“And she is so much more smiley,” Paez-Naranjo added. “You can see her smile from a mile away.”

Demasiado azúcar es perjudicial, pero ¿son más saludables los edulcorantes?

¿Azúcar o endulzante artificial?

Carolina Pikacho Fronteras de la Noticia - ambito.com Siete cucharadas de azúcar. Esa es la máxima cantidad que deberíamos consumir al día, según los nutricionistas, para evitar problemas de salud.

Si tenemos en cuenta que una sola lata de algunas de las gaseosas o refrescos más populares ya contiene más azúcar que esa cantidad, podemos ver que no es nada fácil mantenerse dentro de esos límites.

Por eso, muchas personas buscan la manera de reemplazar a este endulzante.

Una de las opciones más populares son los edulcorantes artificiales, que proporcionan un gusto dulce con pocas o ninguna caloría.

Pero ¿son realmente estos productos químicos más saludables que el azúcar?

Hay muchos tipos diferentes de edulcorantes en miles de productos diferentes, incluidos alimentos y bebidas dietéticas.

Todos apuntan a cumplir la misma función: endulzar en lugar del

azúcar, lo que significa aportar menos calorías.

Algunos como la sacarina, la sucralosa, el acesulfame K y el aspartamo son intensamente dulces en pequeñas dosis, lo que los hace ideales para usar en refrescos bajos en calorías y chicles sin azúcar.

Reducir las calorías que obtienes del azúcar puede ayudarte a perder peso.

Sin embargo, cuánto peso perderás dependerá de tu dieta en general y de cuánto ejercicio hagas, así como de tu composición genética y tu metabolismo.

La doctora Stacey Lockyer, de la Fundación Británica de Nutrición, dice que cambiar a alimentos y bebidas endulzados artificialmente podría ayudar a algunas personas que hacen dieta.

Los edulcorantes artificiales están estrechamente regulados y han superado las verificaciones necesarias para su uso en alimentos.

Menos inmigrantes logran la ciudadanía de Estados Unidos

Janine Trainor Fronteras de la Noticia - EFE Alrededor de 10% menos inmigrantes logró la ciudadanía en Estados Unidos en el año fiscal 2023, en comparación con aquellos que lo hicieron en 2022 Según los reportes de la oficina de Servicios de Ciudadanía e Inmigración (USCIS), el pasado año fiscal 876,6000 inmigrantes lograron la naturalización.

La cifra fue 90,000 casos menos que en año fiscal 2022, cuando 964,000 inmigrantes lograron obtener la ciudadanía, marcando un récord en este proceso.

La Asociación Nacional para Nuevos Estadounidenses (NPNA, por sus siglas en inglés) lamentó la baja, al considerar que las acciones del gobierno del presidente Joe Biden se han quedado cortas para procesar estos trámites y hacerlos “más accesibles”.

La organización, sin embargo, reconoce que todavía hay una ventana de oportunidad para que la Administración Biden avance en la implementación de la Orden Ejecutiva de enero del 2021, sobre facilitar los procesos migratorios.

Nicole Melaku, directora ejecutiva de NPNA, dijo que el impulso sobre nuevos ciudadanos después de la pandemia no logró mantenerse.

“A finales de septiembre, más de 400,000 aspirantes a estadounidenses aguardaban en el proceso de naturalización para alcanzar todo su potencial social, cívico y económico a través de la ciudadanía”, dijo Melaku. “En asociación con NPNA y numerosas iniciativas locales y nacionales que apoyan la naturalización, la Administración Biden debe cumplir sus compromisos con los nuevos es-

tadounidenses eliminando las barreras a la naturalización y eliminando la acumulación de solicitudes”.

Los datos citados por NPNA indica que USCIS tenía a septiembre del 2023, último mes de ese año fiscal, 400,903 solicitudes de naturalización en proceso que, de haber avanzado, hubieran aumentado significativamente el número de nuevos ciudadanos.

Hay otros retrasos significativos, como más de 13,000 trámites de renovación del documento de naturalización.

En dos de los grandes grupos de petición de Green Card, por matrimonio y petición familiar (padres, hermanos e hijos), USCIS también reportó retrasos significativos.

En el caso de la Residencia Permanente por matrimonio se reportan 56,954 casos aprobados contra45,143 pendientes.

En cuanto a la remoción de condicionantes de una Green Card también presenta retrasos con 133,147 casos pendientes contra 12,672 aprobados.

Por petición familiar en general se aprobaron 856,2018, pero hay 1.9 millones de solicitudes pendientes.

USCIS ha implementado varios cambios en el procesamiento de trámites migratorios, ya sea visas de trabajo o protecciones provisionales, como el Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS), a fin de reducir los tiempos de espera.

DuPage MLK breakfast aims to bring together races, cultures The DuPage County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Advisory Committee’s inaugural MLK Breakfast will be held Jan. 15 at The Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace.

It’s the culmination of a series of MLK events held throughout 2023 to promote King’s vision of unity and social justice in partnership with various faith communities and groups. It also is a revival of the DuPage County-wide MLK breakfast — started by former Benedictine University President William Carroll — that ran for 20 years and raised money for scholarships until 2016.

“I was president during the 20 years and when I left they just stopped it,” said Carroll, president emeritus of the Lisle university now living in North Carolina and a higher education consultant.

It was “a celebration of Dr. King but also a celebration of our diversity, the university and the community,” he added.

“The Benedictines, their biggest value is hospitality,” Carroll said. “As a Benedictine University, we welcome the stranger. Celebrating Dr. King’s day, we focused on celebrating our differences and embracing it. We celebrate our ethnic heritage, we celebrate our religious backgrounds on this particular day. When you leave you are no longer a stranger.”

Now, honoring King’s message and values has become a yearlong mission for the advisory committee.

“I’m excited that it’s coming back,” Carroll said. “Now, there is a much broader community base ... much more powerful than a single institution trying to do it by itself.”

Nearly 200 people are on the advisory committee working on the yearlong initiative whose capstone is the Jan. 15 breakfast.

“We will be expecting 1,157 people at this event,” said Regina Brent, committee cochair.

Renowned gospel singer the Rev. Darius Brooks and choirs from the DuPage AME Church in Lisle and St. John AME Church in Aurora will perform.

Art Norman, retired NBC News anchorman, will be the master of ceremonies. Carroll will talk about the breakfast’s history.

Guest speakers are Naomi King, widow of the Rev. Alfred Daniel King and sister-in-law to Martin Luther King Jr., and Bob Zellner, a Freedom Rider, social justice activist and member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.

Tickets are still on sale for the event, which will run from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at 100 Drury Lane. Proceeds go toward the DuPage Community Foundation’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Fund.

Greater Chicago is helping mobilize community members. The rally is being organized in collaboration with the American Muslim Task Force for Palestine, Islamic Circle of North America and the ANSWER Coalition. It aims to unite communities in support of a permanent cease-fire and end to violence in Gaza.

The march will take place at 1 p.m. at the National Mall, 1600 Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. A caravan will depart from Chicago between 7 and 9 p.m. Friday, arriving at the National Mall by 8-10 a.m. Saturday. It will return to Chicago early Sunday morning.

Anti-hate initiative

The Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center in Skokie is launching a new permanent exhibition, unique campaigns, and informative programming as part of its anti-hate initiative.

This spring, the museum will open “Voices of Genocide.” The exhibition will help elevate voices of survivors and descendants of genocides worldwide. It aims to expand awareness, foster compassion and empathy, and empower visitors to take a stand to prevent and respond to genocides, mass atrocities, and other human rights violations.

The museum also will continue to offer free admission on the last Friday of the month in January, February, and March.

For the free day on Jan. 26, survivor Marion Deichmann will be at the museum during the afternoon to meet guests and sign her book, “Her Name Shall Remain Unforgotten.” Deichmann’s VR film, “Letters from Drancy,” also will be playing in January in the museum’s VR gallery, “The Journey Back.”

The Forest Preserve District of Kane County will present “A Brief History of the Reintroduction of Native Americans into Illinois” from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 27, at the Barbara Belding Lodge, Brewster Creek Forest Preserve, 6N921 Route 25 in St. Charles Gerald Savage, aka Chief White Winnebago of the Ho-Chunk Nation, will describe the culture and history of his tribal territory and settlements, how his family was relocated into Starved Rock, tribal names and culture, his regalia, and tribal artifacts.

Native American storytelling, mostly of HoChunk origin, will be woven into Savage’s talk.

This “Learn from the Experts” program, sponsored by Illinois Humanities, is for people 18 and older. Illinois Humanities is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy Demands Wisdom, the Illinois Arts Council Agency, and contributions from individuals, foundations, and corporations.

Carlos Morales Fronteras de la Noticia - neuromedica.com Existen varios factores y trastornos emocionales que pueden confundir a los padres de familia e incluso a los maestros porque son similares a Trastorno por Déficit de Atención (TDA) y al Trastorno por Déficit de Atención e Hiperactividad (TDAH): nueve de cada 10 casos no padecen dichos trastornos y es innecesaria la medicación.

Por ejemplo, la inmadurez emocional de los niños en edad preescolar y primaria está asociada con un bajo rendimiento escolar y es común que los niños padezcan problemas de lenguaje y de lecto-escritura.

Contrariamente a lo que se piensa, se trata de pequeños con capacidades intelectuales normales e, incluso, pueden ser sobresalientes. El problema es que no han desarrollado las habilidades esperadas y acordes a su edad por motivos estrictamente psicológicos.

“Son niños muy sobreprotegidos y con papás sumamente aprensivos y que de forma inconsciente inhiben su desarrollo. No son estimulados: ‘no se les toca ni con el pétalo de una rosa’ y las consecuencias son contraproducentes.

Los motivos son diversos: por el clima de inseguridad los niños ya no son sociables como lo eran antes – ya no juegan en la calle o fuera de sus hogares -; por sobreprotegerlos los padres no les enseñan a defenderse; son niños producto de procesos de infertilidad y esto conlleva una fuerte gran carga emocional, y en términos generales, sus padres promueven los miedos en vez del valor para resolver los problemas.

No hay como un diagnóstico basado en pruebas que determinan el nivel Asimismo existen otros escenarios en donde se presentan diagnósticos erróneos de TDAH y TDA: Hiperactividad por mala alimentación.

Ingerir exceso de alimentos con azúcar, como refrescos, comida chatarra, cereales con grandes cantidades de endulzantes entre otros.

Desatención por parte de los padres.

Cuando no conviven con sus hijos; de forma inconsciente los niños comienzan a portarse mal en casa y en la escuela, no se concentran o denotan una hiperactividad anormal. En el fondo están llamando la atención de sus padres para que convivan con ellos.

Cuando estén padeciendo un divorcio violento de sus padres: es frecuente que no se concentren en el colegio. de inmadurez. Y hay buenas noticias, 82 por ciento de los casos se trata de niños sin TDA, pero con algún grado de inmadurez psicológica. Sólo el 18 por ciento sí presenta inmadurez intelectual y otro tipo de padecimientos (TDA, TDAH, daños neurológicos, bajo coeficiente intelectual).

En cuanto a la inmadurez, la psicóloga explicó que el tratamiento para revertirla se basa en terapias de juego.

Los niños se divierten al mismo tiempo que refuerzan su autoestima y logran ganar autonomía. Para sus padres la intervención psicológica prevé cambios en la dinámica familiar y escolar. Por lo tanto, si cuenta con el apoyo familiar y de sus centros de estudio los niños pueden revertir la inmadurez a mediano plazo.

El Acura MDX juega bien su papel de modelo de lujo, combinando líneas de car-

rocería fluidas con extremos musculosos, y dimensiones resaltadas para crear un efecto visual vigoroso. Resulta interesante ver cómo lo logran, reinventando el modelo más grande del fabricante mientras sigue algunas líneas visuales del sedán TLX más pequeño.

Las mayores proporciones dan al 2024 MDX una nariz más larga, y con el estiramiento de la distancia entre ejes de tres pulgadas, alcanza una nueva forma musculosa que se estrecha en la parte trasera y se resuelve en unos finos faros traseros LED. Los modelos Type S como el que probamos, tienen una parrilla delantera más grande y cuatro salidas de escape, además de llantas de 21 pulgadas de serie. ¿Y POR DENTRO? El diseño interior es moderno, quizá algo recargado. El habitáculo luce tapicería de cuero aderezada con ribetes metálicos y costuras cruzadas para ofrecer una experiencia premium, y aunque los materiales son de excelente calidad, quizá el conjunto no esté a la altura de sus contrapartes europeos o los coreanos de Genesis.

Los acabados superiores ofrecen cómodos asientos delanteros ventilados con masaje. Los pasajeros en la segunda fila también están bien acomodados, aunque las plazas de la tercera fila de asientos son quizá más adecuadas para los niños.

El espacio de carga no es líder de su clase, pero tampoco está entre los peores con 16.3 pies cúbicos. Nos gusta un pequeño compar-

timento de almacenamiento bajo el piso de carga trasero, que proporciona una pequeña cantidad de espacio extra y posibilidad de esconder objetos valiosos.

TECNOLOGÍA Y SEGURIDAD Las prestaciones de seguridad activa son amplias, incluso en los modelos más económicos del MDX 2024. Más mujeres, el reto de la música urbana mexicana para 2024 Carolina Pikacho, Fronteras de la Noticia - EFE La escena de la música en español enfrenta este 2024 un reto significativo: La incorporación de las mujeres en el género emergente urbano mexicano, según dijeron a EFE artistas, empresarios y ejecutivos de esa industria.

Es una tarea pendiente que se enmarca en la urgente necesidad de abrir más espacios para las artistas femeninas en general, agregaron.

Aunque 2023 vio un incremento en la premiación y las reproducciones por las plataformas de internet de la música hecha por mujeres, la mayoría las generaron un pequeño grupo: Shakira, Karol G, Rosalía, Natalia Lafourcade, Becky G y la eternamente exitosa Selena Quintanilla (1971-1995).

“Nuestra música no podrá competir a nivel mundial realmente hasta que no haya una buena representación de mujeres”, dijo a EFE el empresario musical Jimmy Humilde, considerado el principal mecenas del regional urbano mexicano.

Humilde explicó que en Rancho Humilde, su empresa discográfica, impulsa a mujeres en géneros como los corridos tumbados y otras fusiones del regional mexicano con sonidos del urbano latino y anglo/ Una de las candidatas para liderar el lado femenino del urbano mexicano es Ivonne Galaz, la primera mujer en cantar profesionalmente corridos

tumbados.

Galaz ha dicho a medios especializados que antes de su vinculación a Rancho Humilde no había ninguna mujer cantando tumbados.

La mexicana se acerca ya a los 50.000 suscriptores en Spotify y en julio pasado lanzó su segundo disco, ‘Júpiter’ con siete canciones inéditas.

Tanto ella como Tania Domínguez, otra artista urbana mexicana que lanzó su primer álbum a finales de 2023, consideran que su modelo es la fallecida artista mexicano-estadounidense Jenni Rivera (1969-2012).

Rivera abrió un boquete para las mujeres en la música regional mexicana, específicamente en el género de la banda, entre finales de la década de 1990 y principios del nuevo siglo.

Otras exponentes femeninas del mexicano urbano son Natalie López, el grupo Conexión Divina, y el trío Yahritza y su esencia, encabezado por Yahritza Martínez en compañía de sus hermanos.

Entre la música latina, el género que más creció en 2023 fue justamente el mexicano.

Según la firma de mediciones Luminate, en el primer semestre del año, el consumo general de música regional mexicana aumentó un 42,1 %, superando a todos los demás, excepto el coreano K-pop.

Artistas globales como Bad Bunny y Shakira hicieron temas dentro del regional mexicano con

colaboraciones con bandas sierreñas y norteñas.

Además de 35 canciones regionales mexicanas ingresaron al ‘Hot 100 de Billboard’, lideradas por el éxito de Eslabón Armado y Peso Pluma ‘Ella baila sola’, que también hizo historia cuando ingresó a los cinco primeros éxitos de esa lista.

El siguiente paso sería que aumentaran las colaboraciones con las mujeres ya que se están abriendo camino en el urbano mexicano.

Galaz ya tiene dos canciones con Natanael Cano, el artista más exitoso de Rancho Humilde. Se trata de ‘Golpes de la vida’ y ‘El mágico’.

La canción más exitosa de Yahritza y su esencia es ‘Frágil’, una colaboración con Grupo Frontera, que supera los 362.000 millones de escuchas en Spotify.

La artista mexicano-estadounidense Becky G también vio la misma ruta cuando se decidió por diferentes estilos del regional mexicano, incluyendo los tumbados, en su disco de 2023 ‘Esquinas’. Sus producciones anteriores habían estado más por el lado del pop y el reguetón. Una de las canciones más exitosas del álbum es ‘Chanel’, una colaboración con Peso Pluma.

Gail Borden Public Library

Estimada comunidad, La Junta Directiva y el personal del Distrito de Biblioteca Pública Gail Borden se sienten honrados de servir a esta comunidad mientras reconocemos 150 años de servicio.

Les pedimos a todos ustedes que nos ayuden a celebrar este hito monumental en 2024.

Esta comunidad tiene el honor de ser la primera en el estado en establecer una biblioteca pública por votación el 2 de abril de 1872, después de que el Estado de Illinois aprobara la “Ley de Bibliotecas Libres” en marzo de 1872. Mucho del ímpetu para este acto siguió el gran fuego de Chicago de 1871 y el regalo de los libros de Inglaterra con las paginas que fueron inscritos con “su majestad la reina Victoria.”

Si bien esta comunidad fue la primera en votar sobre el establecimiento de una biblioteca pública en Illinois, las puertas de nuestra primera biblioteca se abrieron en 1874 en el tercer piso del bloque Home Bank que una vez estuvo en el edificio Tower.

Por favor, planee celebrar los 150 años a lo largo de 2024 con nosotros en muchas presentaciones, exposiciones y más.
