“Casi como despertar ‘Almost like waking up again’: de nuevo”: Estudiantes de Harper College aceptan la Distinción de Estudios de Justicia Social

Cuando el profesor asistente Michael Bentley era estudiante, sentía que le faltaba algo a su educación. “Me encantaba aprender, y me encantaba ir a la escuela”, recordó, “pero estaba aprendiendo a encajar en el mundo en lugar de a remodelar el mundo”. Mexicana-estadounidense con raíces indígenas, completó un proyecto final trabajando con el Centro Cultural Trickster en Schaumburg. “Es un centro de artes culturales donde organizan reuniones y eventos y enseñan la herencia de los nativos americanos a niños, adultos, cualquier persona. No importa de dónde vengas”, dijo. “Sentí una conexión real”. Velázquez dijo que la Distinción Estudios de Justicia Social (SJS) le enseñó sobre la historia que no aprendió en la preparatoria, sin sacrificar sus estudios básicos. Su proyecto final de Estudios de Justicia Social (SJS) aprovechó su trabajo voluntario en el Trickster Center para un análisis de la pérdida de la herencia nativa americana y sus efectos en la salud mental. “Pude tomar los cursos que necesitaba completar mientras seguía aprendiendo sobre justicia social”, dijo. “A través de la distinción, se te abren los ojos y te vuelves más consciente de tu entorno. Harper College students embrace Social Justice Studies Distinction

When Assistant Professor Michael Bentley was a student, he felt like something was missing from his education. “I loved learning, and I loved going to school,” he recalled, “but I was learning how to ﬁt into the world instead of how to reshape the world.” Bentley is now an assistant professor and co-chair of humanities and the ﬁrst coordinator of the Harper College Social Justice Studies Distinction, a program for students who want an education that prepares them to succeed while applying knowledge to help improve the world around them. “We wanted to create an opportunity for students at Harper to begin to think about how they can leverage their academic experience toward serving the community and addressing problems,” he explained.

A well-rounded, eye-opening education

Ada Velazquez, who graduated in May 2023, was the ﬁrst Harper student to complete the Social Justice Studies (SJS) Distinction. A Mexican American with indigenous roots, she completed a capstone project

working with theTrickster Cultural Centerin Schaumburg. “It’s a cultural arts center where they host meetings and events and teach Native American heritage to kids, adults, anyone. It doesn’t matter where you come from,” she said. “I felt a real connection.” Velazquez said the SJS Distinction taught her about history she didn’t learn in high school, without sacriﬁcing her core studies. Her SJS capstone project leveraged her volunteer work at the Trickster Center toward an analysis of the loss of Native American heritage and its effects on mental health. “I could take the courses I needed to complete while still learning about social justice,” she said. “Through the distinction, you get your eyes opened and you become more aware of your surroundings. It’s almost like waking up again. I’m proud to be an Indigenous woman, and I want to continue learning more.”

A distinction designed with equity in mind

The Social Justice Studies Distinction at Harper offers an inspiring and empowering experience for students seeking a more just and sustainable future. Students are empowered to become active participants in their communities, campuses and workplaces. Students become catalysts for change, equipped with the knowledge, skills and passion to create a more compassionate, equitable and inclusive society. “Collectively, at Harper College we strive to serve the diverse needs of our community. We are especially excited that our students are also passionate about advocacy and learning to ﬁght against injustice,” said Dr. Tamara A. St. Charles restaurant transitions to event venue BY SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK

St. Charles party planners will have a new place to host events in 2024 as the former Eden Restaurant & Events has switched gears to become Eden Events. As a strictly events venue, the business at 1 Illinois St. is embracing its new role as a premier event location on the south side of downtown St. Charles, just west of the Fox River. In a recent news release, Eden Events co-owner Jamal Amro said the change will allow them to align more with their vision for the business. Owners also announced plans to begin hosting live music events from a wide range of musical genres. The stage will feature music from around the world, from jazz, blues to contemporary hits, promising to provide a vibrant entertainment experience for the community, according to the release. “This evolution allows us to broaden our horizons and cater to a diverse array of events, ranging from weddings, corporate functions, bridal and baby showers, and birthday parties,” Amro said. “We’re eager to collaborate with you in crafting memorable moments within our newly re-imagined space.”

Transportation experts make predictions for 2024 We may see blustery skies over O’Hare redo, questions concerning transit cliff

The train has left the 2023 station loaded with major stories, from a controversial CP railway merger to a transit funding crisis. So what’s next in 2024, you ask? In a time-honored tradition, transportation seers and professors Joseph Schwieterman of DePaul University and Ian Savage of Northwestern University will look into the future. Our experts foresee turbulence over O’Hare International Airport’s rebuild, which would replace Terminal 2 with a massive Global Terminal. United and American airlines are concerned the project’s $6.1 billion budget will escalate by more than $1.5 billion and those costs could be passed onto passengers. At the same time, the carriers are pledging to work with the city to modernize the airport. The Chicago Department of Aviation said it remains committed to the development of O’Hare 21, “a once-in-a-generation investment in the airport’s terminal facilities to meet the needs of all airline partners, airport employees and the traveling public in the 21st century.” Schwieterman expects, “after much wrangling, American, United and the city of Chicago will strike a deal allowing work on the terminal project at O’Hare to proceed in earnest.” Savage predicts a “a scaled-back and

more nondescript terminal than that originally proposed by lead architect Jeanne Gang in 2019.” Switching to trains and buses, “one transportation story will dominate the headlines in 2024 — the desperate attempts to avoid transit’s ‘fiscal cliff’ as the federal COVID-19 relief money runs out,“ Savage said. Metra, Pace and the CTA estimate they’ll face a $730 million shortfall in two years caused by a pandemic ridership drop. “With no sign that office workers will return to their desks five days a week in the foreseeable future, if ever, transit agencies are faced with severe service cuts or asking for increased public subsidies to make up the revenue shortfall,” said Savage, a transportation economist. Schwieterman anticipates “a mild panic will set in next fall as the specter of largescale transit cuts grows due to the impending fiscal cliff.” In October, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning finalized a report on the crisis. Its recommendations include merging Metra, Pace and the CTA and raising revenues from new taxes. Now it’s up to the General Assembly to consider. “This will be the year when lawmakers are going to have to make some tough decisions,” Savage said. “My cynical prediction is that taxpayers are going to get hit hard in the

wallet to bail out (transit) with little in the way of reform or belt-tightening by the agencies. Perhaps I will be surprised.” Metra shifts to a four-zone ticketing system in February and that “might be the prelude to integrating services and pricing with the CTA and Pace,” he speculated.

“But I am not holding my breath,” Savage added. “I predict that deeply entrenched political fiefdoms will keep this from becoming a reality.” Schwieterman expects Metra’s new fare system will cause some confusion at first. By summer, however, riders will “appreciate its simplicity and expanded day-pass options,” he said. What else? Here are some quick hits from Schwieterman, director of the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development. • “Despite its merger with JetBlue, Spirit Airlines will continue to offer rock-bottom fares while also expanding at O’Hare.” • “American and United will struggle trying to add back flights due to shortages of airplanes and crew, preventing O’Hare from closing the gap with Atlanta, which will continue to have the most U.S. traffic.” • “Amtrak will set new records for Midwestern passenger traffic due to America’s expanding appetite for travel and new 110 mph service to St. Louis.” • And, “Pace will see much traffic growth on its bus rapid transit services, prompting it to make plans for more express routes,” Schwieterman said. My prediction — legislation will be introduced in Springfield ending the road test requirement for seniors renewing licenses, and spark a robust discussion.

BENEFICIARIOS DE DACA ENCARAN UN 2024 DE INCERTIDUMBRE POR EL POSIBLE REGRESO DE TRUMP Los cerca de 600.000 indocumentados beneﬁciados por la Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA) afrontarán en 2024 un año lleno de incertidumbre ante las elecciones y la posibilidad que regrese al poder el expresidente Donald Trump, que se ha obsesionado con rescindir el programa.

Los soñadores, como se conoce a los amparados por DACA, que protege a los beneﬁciarios de la deportación y los hace elegibles para un permiso de trabajo, han sido el grupo de indocumentados que más ha ganado reconocimiento entre los votantes estadounidenses en la última década, pero su lucha parece estar perdiendo brillo. El mayor problema para estos inmigrantes, que llegaron a EE.UU. siendo niños, es que 2024 “lamentablemente” es un año de elecciones presidenciales, explica a EFE Miguel Tinker Salas, profesor de Historia y Estudios Latinos en el Pomona College, en Claremont (California). Esto a pesar de que los demócratas y el presidente Joe Biden se comprometieron cuando llegaron al poder en 2021 a impulsar y aprobar un

proyecto en el Congreso que otorgara una residencia permanente a los amparados por DACA. “Malgastaron el tiempo y la mayoría que tuvieron. Es un panorama tenebroso para estos inmigrantes en 2024”, sostiene Tinker Salas. Ruiz considera que el actual Congreso “no está comprometido” con la protección a los 578.680 indocumentados que actualmente se benefician del programa, de acuerdo con datos del Instituto de Política Migratoria (MPI). A este escenario se suma la posibilidad de que regrese a la Casa Blanca el expresidente Trump, que en su mandato (2017-2021) ordenó poner fin al programa y forzó a los soñadores a recurrir a la justicia para mantener sus beneficios. La Corte Suprema de Estados Unidos falló en junio de 2020 en favor de los beneficiarios argumentando que Trump eliminó DACA de forma ilegal. Pero la decisión no impide que el republicano intente de nuevo poner fin al programa, establecido en 2012 por la Administración de Barack Obama (2009-2017). En un mitin reciente en Nueva Hampshire, Trump prometió que si llega nuevamente a la Casa Blanca

comenzará “la más grande y masiva operación de deportación en el país”. Trump, que sigue siendo favorito para la nominación presidencial republicana hacia las elecciones de 2024, ha usado nuevamente el tema migratorio para ganar adeptos en medio de un mayor flujo de migrantes, que en noviembre dejó más de 242.000 detenidos en la frontera sur. DACA enfrenta otro reto legal entablado por varios estados republicanos encabezados por Texas. En septiembre pasado el juez federal Andrew Hanen determinó que el programa viola la Ley de Procedimiento Administrativo, que rige cómo las agencias hacen los reglamentos. Hanen escribió en su fallo que la solución para los soñadores “recae en la rama legislativa y no en la ejecutiva o la judicial”. El juez dejó en pie el programa y permitió que los amparados renovaran el beneficio mientras se realiza la apelación, pero no permitió aceptar nuevas solicitudes. El MPI calcula que 1,1 millones de indocumentados califican para ampararse con DACA. Se espera que la batalla legal llegue

nuevamente al máximo tribunal estadounidense. Pero esta vez el panorama es diferente ya que dos de juezas que votaron en favor de DACA ya no están en la Corte, y una de ellas (Ruth Bader Ginsburg) fue reemplazada por Amy Coney Barret, de tendencia conservadora. Ante el desalentador panorama, la organización que dirige Ruiz, al igual que otras, se enfocará el próximo año en alentar el voto en favor de candidatos que apoyen a los soñadores. La organización también desarrolla una campaña para que los soñadores renueven el amparo y hagan uso de un permiso de emergencia de salida del país, con el que podrán obtener a su regreso un ingreso legal a EE.UU., requisito para optar a la residencia permanente a través de una petición familiar. “Hay ciertas ventanas legales que debemos aprovechar. Por eso invito a los protegidos por DACA a buscar asesoría y no rendirse en este próximo año”, urgió Ruiz. Por su parte, Tinker Salas espera que los votantes no se olviden de este grupo que representa “todo lo positivo” de los inmigrantes. “Hay una deuda con ellos”, puntualizó.

Analicemos primero las causas de la infelicidad: odio al trabajo; no hay suficiente dinero; el éxito de los demás; la presión familiar; relaciones sociales miserables; el amor no correspondido; los ‘likes’ no son suficientes; vida aburrida, la vida estresada; la depresion, la falta de motivación … claro que en la vida hay situaciones más allá de nuestro control como las condiciones climáticas, los enfoques políticos y la salud. En el gran espectro de la vida sin embargo, esas condiciones son sólo temporales.

Las Expectativas

Siempre estamos esperando que los demás hagan cosas. Las madres deben de alimentar a los hijos; los padres deben de traer dinero; los contratistas deben de arreglar lo malogrado; los bancos deben de otorgar préstamos; los gobiernos deben de permitirnos hacer lo que queremos; los magos deben de hacer desaparecer nuestros problemas; los estudiantes deben de sacarse buenas caliﬁcaciones; las tiendas deben de tener y vender lo que queremos comprar … todo debe pasar de la manera en que esperamos. Y desde los últimos 20 años, la satisfacción debe de ocurrir instantáneamente. ¿Y de nosotros? ¿Qué esperan los demás de nosotros?

Las emociones primarias que tienen los bebés son las respuestas iniciales a estímulos o eventos antes de que en sus cabecitas empiece el proceso de la consciencia. Las emociones primarias son las mismas a través de todas las culturas. La respuesta del cuerpo que te alerta sobre tus necesidades se sienten fuertemente y no duran mucho. Por ejemplo: El sentirse triste cuando alguien te defrauda. Las emociones primarias incluyen: el enojo, el miedo, la tristeza, el disgusto, la sorpresa, la anticipación, la conﬁanza y el contento. Las emociones secundarias son una manera aprendida que tiende a atenuar lo fuerte con algo menos intenso. Las emociones secundarias tienen que ver con la auto-subsistencia; pero al pasar el tiempo, nos causan más daño porque destruyen relaciones, nos mantienen en guardia, o endurecen nuestros corazones. Estas dejan a la gente furiosa, entumecida, acabada y aislada. Estas son emociones aprendidas que vamos guardando desde la infancia como la culpa, la verguenza, la confusión, el resentiiento, la frustración y el remordimiento. ¿Es la Felicidad una Emoción o un Estado Mental? Desde un sentido común, la felicidad es una emoción como el goce, el contento y la

alegría. Si se considera a la felicidad como una emoción cualquiera, no tendría sentido ser feliz todo el tiempo. De hecho que mientras más se trate de obtener el placer, más inquietos y deprimidos nos vamos a sentir por no ser felices. La confusión con esta pregunta es un factor que contribuye al por qué hay tanta gente frustrada por no ser feliz. La gente cree que la felicidad es una meta, y se pasa toda la vida tratando de alcanzarla. Si la vida se viera desde una perspectiva global, y se pudiese decir que uno es generalmente feliz de la manera en que se vive; entonces se tiene un estado mental feliz. Si la gente quiere ser feliz, capaz debe de empesar a sentirse menos miserable. Para esto, la gente debería de • Parar de ser gruñona o cínica • Parar de brillar más que los otros • Parar de sufrir por la excelencia de los demás • Parar de aburrirse; ser más creativa y observar al mundo • Parar de temer enfrentar situaciones • Parar de sentirse culpables • Parar de luchar con la ira • Parar de hacerse la víctima de ingratitudes, crueldades y traiciones • Parar de importarle lo que los demás piensan de ellos Esos miedos ﬂotantes hacen que la gente se sienta miserable.

Educarse

La educación erradica los malentendidos del mundo que conducen a emociones negativas y que dan lugar a la infelicidad. La sabiduría clarifica el saber. Uno se beneficia enterándose de los beneficiios de la tolerancia y la paciencia, y de la naturaleza destructiva de la ira. Ocupándose demasiado en el pasado y en el futuro crea inquietudes. La clave para encontrar la felicidad es determinar cómo aliviar esas inquietudes y conectarse con el presente. Es importante desarrollar una habilidad para aceptar nuestros pensamientos y emociones, desenganchándonos de los pensamientos negativos, para vivir en el presente, examinar la propia experiencia, para conocer nuestros propios valores y tomar un compromiso de acción para vivir la vida. Best Wishes, Success and Happiness! We wish and we are wished all of these for the holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries. However: What wishes would the best be? What is Success? What’s Happiness? You can’t be happy if you never experience sadness. How would you even know you’re happy if you had nothing to compare it to? Let’s ﬁrst analyze the causes of unhappiness: hate the job; not enough money; others’ success; family pressure; miserable social relationships; unrequited love; not enough “likes;” boring life; stressed life; depression; no motivation … in life of course, there are things that are beyond our control such as the weather, the political, or health conditions. In the whole spectrum of one’s life however, any conditions are just temporary.

Expectations

We are always expecting others to do things for us. Mothers should feed the kids; fathers should bring money; service contractors should ﬁx our broken things; banks should give us loans; governments should allow us to do all we want; magicians should make our problems disappear; kids should always get good grades; stores should have what we want to buy; … everything should happen the way we expect them to. And, for the last 20 years, our gratiﬁcation has been expected to occur instantly. What do others expect of us?

Emotions

Babies’ primary emotions are their initial, instinctive responses to stimuli or events before any cognitive processing takes place. Primary emotions are believed to be universal across cultures. They include the body’s ﬁrst response that alerts you about your needs; they come on strongly; and do not last very long. E.g. Feeling sad when someone breaks your trust. Primary emotions include: anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise, anticipation, trust and joy. Secondary emotions are a learned or ingrained way to deal with sensitive emotions by numbing them with a less sensitive emotion. Secondary emotions are all about self-preservation, but over time, they often cause us much more harm by destroying relationships, maintaining our guard, or walling off our hearts, which frequently leaves people feeling irate, numb, worn out, and lonely. These are learned emotions that we pick-up in childhood from the people around us, like guilt, shame, confusion, resentment, frustration, and remorse. Is “Happiness” an emotion or a state of mind? If you look at it with common sense, happiness is an emotion just like joy, contentment, and cheerfulness. If you consider happiness an emotion like any other, then it wouldn’t make sense to be happy all the

time. In fact, the harder you try to obtain pleasure and joy, the more likely you are to feel anxiety and depression about not being happy. The confusion around this question is a contributing factor to why so many people are frustrated that they are not “happy.” People believe happiness is a place you can get to, so they spend their lives trying to get there. If you can zoom out on your life as a whole, and say that you are generally happy with how you live it, then you have a happy state of mind. If people want to be happy, maybe they should start making themselves less miserable. People should: • Stop being grumpy and cynical • Stop trying to outshine neighbors • Stop suffering because of others’ excellence • Stop boredom; be creative and look at the world • Stop fearing anything they are unwilling to face • Stop feeling guilty • Stop struggling with anger • Stop playing the victim of ingratitude, unkindness, and treachery • Stop caring for what others think about them Any free-ﬂoating fear will make people miserable.

Educating Oneself

Education roots out the misunderstandings of the world that lead to negative emotions and therefore unhappiness. Wisdom clarifies knowledge. One benefits from learning of the benefits of tolerance and patience, and the destructive nature of anger. Dwelling on the past and the future often leads to anxiety. The key to finding happiness is to figure out how to ease anxiety and connect with the present. It is important to develop an ability to accept one’s thoughts and emotions, unhook from negative thoughts, live in the present, examine one’s experience, know our values, and take committed action to live them. Illinois will launch an intake center in Chicago for migrants being transported here from Texas, state officials announced Wednesday. The facility will be within Chicago’s cityrun bus landing zone near the Maxwell Street Market on the Near West Side. Six heated tents are under construction and should open within weeks, according to a news release. Arriving migrants will be able to receive services, meet sponsors or get help getting to other destinations. Chicago-based New Life Centers and Catholic Charities have been getting state funding to help migrants at the bus landing zone. The new intake center will allow services and staffing to expand, state officials said. “The state is determined to use its limited resources as efficiently as possible, helping asylum seekers settle in Illinois and achieve independence,” Gov. J.B. Pritzker said in the announcement. “We will continue to ensure that they are met with dignity and compassion, while we call for increased coordination and funding from the federal government to provide a federal solution to this federal challenge.” In addition to the intake center, work is continuing on a shelter for migrants in the Little Village neighborhood, on the site of a former CVS pharmacy. Until it’s ready, the state is partnering with New Life Centers to operate a temporary shelter at an unspecified Chicago hotel to support families that arrived during the recent holiday season, the news release stated.
