Diciembre es el último mes del año calendario. Todos están ocupados ya sea recolectando y distribuyendo donaciones para los necesitados, trabajando en el cierre de las finanzas de sus empresas y completando entregas; o tratando de conseguir que el deseo de sus niños se haga realidad. Los estudiantes esperan pasar sus exámenes finales satisfactoriamente; los padres tratan de atar cabos … mientras que todo el mundo lucha y enfrenta sus propios demonios. Tradicionalmente, el último mes del año tiende a ponerle bastante presión a todos, por la esperanza de poder empezar un nuevo año libre sin acarrear los viejos reveses al nuevo. Esta temporada de revisiones es siempre estresante por lo que nos presenta una presión sicológica para completar lo pendiente. Es importante respirar hondo y analizar la situación. ¿Enfrento grandes cambios en mi vida? ¿Por qué me preocupo? ¿Dependen de mi los resultados de la situación? ¿Me están abrumando las responsabilidades? ¿Tengo opciones? ¿Me siento discriminado, odiado o abusado? ¿Veo mi futuro con incertidumbre? Si no tenemos el control de los resultados de una situación, no tiene caso preocuparse. Si me encuentro en una situación apremiante debido a mi dilación o tardanza, y mis excusas, la mejor manera de evitar que las cosas empeoren es tomar las riendas sobre el asunto, o permitir que otros nos ayuden y nos rescaten. Ya es momento de tragarse el orgullo. Si es que se tiene el control sobre las soluciones, es obviio que sabemos lo que hay que hacer. Las causas principales de los fracasos en la vida son las influencias del medio ambiente, la mentalidad equivocada, las malas costumbres, y la falta de motivación. Todas estas razones para el fracaso se pueden abordar si identificamos la causa que nos corresponde, y nos creamos un plan para deshacernos de la misma. Necesitamos aprender de nuestras situaciones y si ahora nos sentimos abrumados, necesitamos cambiar la dirección de nuestras acciones para evitar otro Diciembre estresante el próximo año.

Padres de Familia: Tengan Cuidado

La salud mental empieza en el vientre. Antes de que un hijo nazca, ya está sientiendo la situación emocional y mental de su madre. De alguna manera, esos sentimientos se guardan en las células de la memoria del bebé. Nuestra salud mental depende de nuestras experiencias pasadas, y del entorno en el que crecemos. Nuestra habilidad para lidiar con el estrés, depende de los mecanismos de defensa que nuestro cuerpo y mente han desarrollado para tratar con la situación. Todo es cuestión de educación y entrenamiento. Asi como entrenamos nuestros cuerpos para que nos vaya bien en un deporte o actividad física, la función de nuestras células cerebrales también dependen de qué también fueron activadas y entrenadas El estrés puede dañar la estructura y fun-

ción del cerebro. Hay estudios que han demostrado que el estrés puede conduccir a un deterioro del conocimiento, al temor y la depresión, y puede agravar el mal funcionamiento neurológico causado por las lesiones cerebrales y las enfermedades. El aprender a enfrentar o tratar el estrés evita cualquiera de esos serios daños. Y, esto tiene que ver no solo con nosobros mismos, sino con la salud mental de nuestros hijos.

No Ignore los Problemas

Las dilaciones, el dar excusas, el ignorar los problemas, el persistir ignorando los problemas, la terquedad en mantener una mentalidad negativa, y el orgullo solo agravan lo que tratamos de evitar. No estamos solos en este mundo. Como humanos, todos estamos sujetos al mundo en que vivimos y la manera más sana de sobrevivir es mantenerse en buenas condiciones, llevarse bien con los demás y evitar el dar excusas.

No se Estanque en el Problema

El tomarse un respiro no signiﬁca que se está ignorando el problema; simplemente nos estamos distanciando un poquito para poder ver todo el panorama. Ya dejamos para más tarde lo que teníamos que hacer; un día más no va a hacer ninguna diferencia. El reducir el estrés va a proveer esa distancia que se necesita.

Esto lo podemos hacer; 1) Haciendo ejercicio: alguna actividad física como el caminar o correr alrededor de un parque; 2) Descansando o durmiendo lo suﬁciente; 3) Conectándose con la familia y los amigos; así nos inspiramos; 4) Educándonos e informándonos; 5) Escribiendo, dibujando o tomando fotos de cualquier cosa que nos llame la atención; 6) Mirando una película, un documental, u obra teatral; ; 7) Olvidando el orgullo propio y siendo humilde; aprendiendo a apreciar lo que se tiene y se recibe de los demás. Estos simples cambios de actitud abren nuestras mentes y nos inspiran de muchas maneras diferentes.

December is the last month of the calendar year. Everyone is busy either collecting and distributing donations to the needy; working on closing the company’s year finances and completing all deliverables; or trying to make your child’s wish come true. Students hope to succeed in their final exams; parents try to make ends meet … while the world fights and deals with its own demons. Traditionally, the last month of the year tends to put a lot of pressure on everyone, in the hope that one can start a clean new year without dragging the old setbacks over. These times of review are always stressful as they present a psychological pressure for completion. It is important to take a deep breath and analyze the situation. Am I facing big changes in my life? Why am I worried? Do I have any control over the outcome of the situation? Am I overwhelmed by my responsibilities? Do I have any options? Do I feel discriminated, hated, or abused? Does my future look uncertain? If we do not have any control over the outcome of a situation, there is no sense of worriying about it. If I am finding myself in a pressing situation because of my procrastination and my making excuses, the best way to prevent making things worse is tackling the issue head on or allow help to rescue it. At that point, it doesn’t make sense to stick to one’s pride. If we do have a control over the outcome, it is obvious that we know what to do about it. The main causes of failure in life are poor environmental influences, the wrong mindset, bad habits, and lack of motivation. All these reasons for failure can be

addressed if we identify which ones apply to us, and create a plan for removing them. We need to learn from our situations and if we now feel overwhelmed, we need to redirect our actions in order to prevent another stressful December next year.

Parents Beware

Mental health starts in the womb. Before a child is born, it is already feeling the mother’s emotional and mental situation. Somehow, those feelings become stored in the baby’s memory cells. Our mental health is dependent on past experiences, and the environment we grow up in. Our ability to cope with stress, depends on the defense mechanisms that our body and mind have develop to deal with a situation. It is all a matter of education and training. Just as we train our bodies to perform well at a sport or physical activity, the function of our brain cells also depends on how well they were activated and trained. Stress can damage the structure and function of the brain. Studies have shown that stress can lead to cognitive impairment, anxiety, and depression and aggravate neurological dysfunction caused by brain injuries and diseases. Learning to cope or deal with stress prevents any of that serious damage. And this applies not only to ourselves, but to the mental health of our children.

Do not ignore the issues

Procrastination, making excuses, ignoring the issues, sticking to a negative mindset, and pride will only aggravate what we are trying to avoid. We are not alone. As humans, we are all subject to the world we live in and the healthiest way to survive is to stay ﬁt, to get along with others and avoid making excuses.

Do not Dwell in the Issue just Worrying About It

We are not ignoring the issue by taking a deep breath, and positioning ourselves at a distance that will enable us to see the whole picture. We procrastinated already this long so one more day won’t make any difference anymore. Reducing our stress will provide the needed distance.

Relax: Get the Whole Picture

We can do this by: 1) Exercising some physical activity like walking, or running around a park. 2) Rest or get enough sleep; 3) Connect with family and friends and get inspired; 4) Educate or Inform yourself; 5) Write, draw or take photos of anything that calls your attention; 6) Watch a movie, documentary or theatrical play; 7) Forget your pride and be humble; learn to appreciate what you have and receive from others. These simple changes in attitude will open our minds, and inspire us in many different ways.

Out of the Box gift shop owner Nicole Garringer was aiming to have a solid year of sales after finally emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic. Then a fire in downtown Crystal Lake over the summer caused smoke damage to her entire store and destroyed about 10,000 items she had for sale. “The front window was full of soot,” Garringer said. “There’s no way to stop any of that smoke from going everywhere.” The fire on June 8 started in a neighboring paint store and caused about $1 million in damage to businesses and apartments, according to early estimates. The blaze not only destroyed Garringer’s inventory but left a strong chemical odor in her shop and other damage. The paint store has not reopened. The challenge for Garringer was not merely to reopen — it was to do it in time for the holiday season, when Out of the Box earns about 75% of its annual sales, she said. The small business at 71 N. Williams St., has unique merchandise ranging from items on the sentimental side to fun gag gifts. Many items can be personalized. During the four months it took to rebuild, friends and customers helped Garringer with cleaning and processing new inventory. She even organized a Facebook group called “Rebuild the Box,” which had more than 50 members. “There were so many people that come in and either clean or help with merchandise,” she said. Loyal customer Anita Consoer was one of the many people who volunteered their time to help Garringer reopen. Consoer assisted with cleaning and restocking inventory. “It was a lot of work, but I enjoyed being around the girls and helping,” she said. “That’s what I think Christmas is about, to help people that need it when they’re in dire need like that.” There were other silver linings: The fire gave Garringer a chance to redesign Out of the Box entirely in her way, which made it look unique, Consoer said. “I thought her store looked even better than before,” she said. Garringer’s friend Amy Murray also helped with the reopening work. Opening day was a success and many people made a special trip to the store to show support, Murray said. “She has a lot of loyal customers,” she said. “She’s definitely loved. People wanted her shop to be back.” Before purchasing Out of the Box from the previous owner about five years ago, Garringer had a small gift store in Cary called Brush. The first year of learning how to operate Out of the Box was a struggle, Garringer said, and then the COVID-19 pandemic hit. She wanted to reopen after the fire to give the store a chance to succeed.

“I feel like we just didn’t get a fair shake,” she said. “That was three years of just struggling, to say it nicely.” Despite the string of bad luck, Garringer is determined to have a better year. She said she received an overwhelmingly positive response from customers when she reopened. “Everyone has been so amazing,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better reaction after all of this.” The reopening also got Garringer to expand into an upstairs space where she has an

embroidery machine and engraver for custom gifts. “We’ll pretty much have a full-blown Etsy situation up there,” she said. The plan is to have the upstairs of the shop be a place for parties and events also. Garringer aims to have that in full swing after the new year. “I just want people to remember that we’re there for other gifts” besides Christmas, she said. “Once we can get that going off, I really think that would be the best.”

Wishes for the Holidays! No matter how we each celebrate the coming season, and for those who do not, I look back on this year and wish for a number of things to return in 2024 and many to perhaps change! Climate control is real, I believe, as we have seen in our weather patterns this year and WISH that 2024 continues to keep the comfortable and sunny days….and helps us understand more how we may positively make good choices that help protect our planet! Think of more gardening and possibly volunteering for a local group that looks to keep our waterways free of trash. Small businesses have seen a boom since COVID, many in our community putting their talents and ideas into real products and services and creating independence to steer their futures. A WISH that 2024 sees more of these talents surface and that we support them! Folks are enjoying a better work/life balance … more time with our kids and friends which helps create more stable neighborhoods for all of us. Think of events or gatherings that bring neighbors together, showing our children how important it is that strong neighborhoods help create safer neighborhoods … establishing small celebrations making everyone in your neighborhood aware of any good news that affects any neighbor … creating a focus on the number of positives that happen that we

may sometimes overlook! 2023 has seen a resurgence of so much anti-Semitism and violence, it seems so hard to believe we are taking steps backward when it comes to accepting each other … may the WISH for 2024 be a return to actually caring about mankind! It seems the only time we all come together and break down barriers of color, race or gender is when tragedy strikes us as a nation. Then no one is afraid to hold a stranger’s hand or share kind words of comfort or realize we really are all the same – we all want the best for our families, we want to work and enjoy our free time, we want to feel safe where ever we go, we want to feel valued! The WISH for 2024 is that we each take a moment a day and express a thought to someone we know or work with or just encounter on a walk – that we look to say something that shows that person that they have value … a smile, a brief ‘Hello, how are you?” …. “Hope you’re having a good day!” It shows we see them, we value that brief passing. El control del clima es real, como hemos visto en nuestros patrones climáticos este año y UN DESEO que 2024 continúe manteniendo los días cómodos y soleados... ¡y nos ayude a comprender mejor cómo podemos tomar buenas decisiones que ayuden a proteger nuestro planeta! Pensar en más jardinería y posiblemente en ofrecerse como voluntario para un grupo local que busca mantener nuestras vías ﬂuviales libres de basura. Las pequeñas empresas han experimentado un auge desde Covid, muchas en nuestra comunidad han puesto sus talentos e ideas en productos y servicios reales y han creado independencia para dirigir su futuro. ¡Un DESEO de que en 2024 surjan más de estos talentos y que los apoyemos! La gente está disfrutando de un mejor equilibrio entre el trabajo y la vida personal... Más tiempo con nuestros hijos y amigos, lo que ayuda a crear vecindarios más estables para todos. Es importante conocer tus propios “estándares”, es decir, aquellas cosas que la otra persona debería darte “sí o sí”, para que te sientas feliz a largo plazo en una relación de pareja. Si tú eres una persona muy cariñosa, es probable que uno de tus estándares sea recibir cariño en forma de besos,

abrazos o palabras bonitas. Pero si estás con alguien que tiene un carácter frío o arisco, podría indicar una falta de compatibilidad. Otro ejemplo sería el de la persona altamente independiente y desapegada. Es probable que uno de sus estándares sea que su pareja le deje espacio y no ande buscando su atención a cada rato. Si estuviera con alguien que necesitara estar muy pegado podría indicar una falta de compatibilidad. La disyuntiva ‘química versus compatibilidad’ afecta igual a un género que al otro. Es un factor biológico muy humano que afecta a ambos sexos y no entiende de géneros. Tanto hombres como mujeres toman decisiones erróneas sin tener en cuenta la compatibilidad o cerciorarse de si la otra persona tiene objetivos parecidos a los suyos. Ocurre, por ejemplo, cuando dos personas empiezan a verse y una solo quiere pasarlo bien, sin compromiso, mientras que la otra busca una relación seria, de las que implican comidas familiares y viajes planiﬁcados a meses vista. O cuando una quiere tener hijos y la otra preﬁere tener dos perros y cuatro periquitos. El problema de atender solo a la química es que corres el riesgo de pensar “cuando se enamore de mí, cambiará de opinión”. Y así pasarás meses o incluso años, esperando el milagro, que nunca se produce. Por eso es tan importante entender la diferencia entre química y compatibilidad, seas hombre o mujer. Si la entiendes, es probable que te ahorres unos cuantos dolores de cabeza (y de corazón).

El yo, el ego El "yo" signiﬁca la idea, la memoria, el recuerdo, la conclusión, la experiencia, las diferentes intenciones, el constante empeño por ser o no ser, la memoria acumulada de inconsciente, lo racial, el grupo, lo individual, el clan, la nación, y toda una serie de cosas por el estilo, ya se proyecten hacia fuera como acción, o se proyecten "espiritualmente" como virtud. El esforzarse por todo eso es el "yo". También debemos incluir la rivalidad y el deseo de ser. El proceso de todo esto es el "yo" y, cuando nos enfrentamos con él sabemos que realmente es algo maligno. ¿Qué aporta el "yo" a la humanidad? El "yo" es la causa que divide a las personas, el "yo" nos encierra en nosotros mismos, sus actividades, por nobles que sean, nos separan y nos aíslan. Todo eso lo sabemos. ¿Qué ocurre cuando el "yo" está ausente? Los momentos en los que el "yo" no está presente, en los que no hay sensación de lucha, de esfuerzo, son extraordinarios. Y esto ocurre cuando hay amor. ¿Fortalece la experiencia al "yo"? Sí, la experiencia fortalece al "ego". En todo momento tenemos experiencias, impresiones; y esas impresiones las interpretamos y reaccionamos ante ellas. Según sean nuestros recuerdos reaccionamos ante cualquier cosa que vemos, que sentimos. Y este proceso de reaccionar ante lo que vemos y sentimos surge la experiencia. Deseamos estar protegidos, tener seguridad interior; o deseamos tener un maestro, un instructor, un Dios, y experimentamos aquello que hemos proyectado. Es decir, hemos proyectado un deseo que ha tomado una forma, al cual le hemos dado un nombre y ante eso reaccionamos. Es nuestra proyección, nuestra nominación. Este deseo que nos brinda una experiencia nos hace decir: "he experimentado", "he visto al maestro", o bien "no lo he visto". Ya conocemos todo el proceso de nombrar y de relatar una experiencia. La experiencia está siempre fortaleciendo al "yo". Cuanto más inmersos, más alie-

nados, estamos en una experiencia, tanto más se fortalece el "yo". Como resultado de la experiencia tenemos cierta fuerza de carácter, de conocimiento, de creencia, de pertenencia a algún grupo determinado; y de todo eso hacemos gala ante otras personas porque sabemos que no son tan "dotados" como nosotros o no pertenecen al grupo que pertenecemos nosotros. Debemos ver como el "yo" siempre sigue actuando: nuestras creencias, nuestros maestros, nuestras "castas" o niveles sociales, nuestro sistema económico, son un proceso de aislamiento y de conﬂicto. Por eso debemos comprender el proceso de la experiencia. ¿Qué ocurre cuando deseamos comprender la Verdad? Anhelamos comprender qué es la Verdad. Luego está nuestra proyección de lo que consideramos que es la verdad, porque hemos leído mucho al respecto y hemos oído hablar a mucha gente; el deseo mismo es proyectado y experimentamos y reconocemos ese estado. Si no reconociera ese estado no lo llamaría "verdad". Pero lo reconocemos y experimentamos y esa experiencia da vigor al "yo". El "yo" se atrinchera en la experiencia y decimos "yo se", "hay Dios" o "no hay Dios"; decimos que un determinado sistema político es justo y los otros no lo son. ¿Cómo podemos dar solución al tremendo problema del "yo", del "ego"? Cuando vemos todo el proceso del "yo", las astutas y extraordinarias invenciones del "yo", su inteligencia, cómo se encubre mediante la identiﬁcación, mediante la virtud, mediante la experiencia, mediante la creencia, mediante el conocimiento; cuando vemos que nos estamos moviendo en un círculo, en una jaula que él mismo fabrica; cuando nos damos cuenta, con pleno conocimiento de ello, ¿no encontramos una calma extraordinaria que no se generó por la fuerza, ni mediante recompensa alguna, ni por ningún temor? Cuando reconocemos que toda actividad de la mente es tan sólo una forma de fortalecimiento del "yo", cuando observamos eso y lo vemos, cuando nos damos completamente cuenta de esto en la acción, cuando llegamos a ese punto -no de un modo ideológico, verbal, ni por experiencia proyectada, sino cuando estamos realmente en ese estado- entonces veremos que la mente, que está totalmente en calma, no tiene el poder de crear. Cualquier cosa creada por la mente lo es dentro de un círculo, dentro del ámbito del "yo". Cuando la mente no crea, entonces existe la creación, lo cual no es un proceso reconocible. La realidad, la verdad, no se puede reconocer. Para que la verdad surja, la creencia, el conocimiento, la experiencia, el perseguir la virtud, todo eso debe desaparecer. La persona virtuosa que tiene conciencia de perseguir la virtud jamás podrá encontrar la verdad. Podrá ser una persona muy decente; esto es algo totalmente distinto del hombre que vive la verdad, del hombre que comprende. En el hombre que vive la verdad, la verdad se ha manifestado.

Supuestamente en 2019 la pareja trató de tener a su tercer hijo, la niña que la cantante siempre deseó. De acuerdo con la información, el embarazo tuvo complicaciones y ella perdió la niña que tanto anhelaban. La cantante le pidió a Piqué que congelaran embriones para tener descendencia en un futuro, y el futbolista accedió, pero con una condición: Shakira debía invertir en sus negocios. Shakira accedió a la condición de Piqué y se convirtió en una de las principales accionistas de sus empresas, según el programa. Cuando Shakira y Piqué se separaron, el tema de los embriones congelados se discutió en el acuerdo de separación. Según la periodista Elisa Beristain, Piqué rechazó los embriones de manera despectiva, diciendo: «Hagan con esas cosas lo que quieran». La justicia de Puerto Rico determinó que no encuentra causa para poder formular cargos de agresión sexual contra el cantante boricua Ricky Martín, quien es acusado por su sobrino Dennis Yandiel Sánchez Martin. El mes de mayo, Dennis Yandiel Sánchez Martin, de 22 años, presentó una contrademanda contra el intérprete de ‘Vuelve’ por la suma de 10 millones de dólares por daños alegando que el cantante abusado de él desde que tenía 11 años. De acuerdo con la fuente oﬁcial, la

prueba obtenida por la Policía de Puerto Rico y el Ministerio Pú-blico durante el curso de la investigación no sostiene las acusaciones del joven de 22 años contra el cantante 51. “Tras completar un proceso de investigación exhaustivo junto al Negociado de la Policía, la Fiscalía de San Juan determinó que no procede la formulación de cargos contra Enrique Martin Morales, co-nocido públicamente como Ricky Martín”, dice el texto enviado por el Departamento de Justicia. “La prueba obtenida por la Policía y Ministerio Público durante el curso de la investigación es incon-sistente con las alegaciones y no sustenta las imputaciones. El artista respondió con una denuncia contra su familiar por extorsión, persecución maliciosa, abu-so del derecho, daños y perjuicios, exigiendo la suma de $30 millones, pero el joven contraatacó con una nueva querella contra su tío, esta vez por agresión, por la que llegó a reclamar diez millones de dólares. Esas películas no tenían ningún derecho a ser tan buenas, pero creo que no soy el único que mostró ciertas dudas cuando se anunció que iba a ocuparse de 'Wonka', una precuela de 'Charlie y la fábrica de chocolate' con Timothée Chalamet al frente del reparto. A fin de cuentas, hay mil cosas que podrían haber salido fatal en 'Wonka', una sensación que sigue presente durante sus casi dos horas de metraje. Sin embargo, King ha vuelto a hacer magia para darnos la mayor sorpresa de Hollywood en este 2023 que está a punto de llegar a su final. Una auténtica joya del cine familiar que perfectamente podríamos equiparar con tomar un chocolate caliente en el día más frío del año. 'Wonka' es una película que coquetea a menudo con lo empalagoso y sentimental, que echa mano de algunas soluciones de guion un tanto arbitrarias y que confía a tope en la ingenuidad del espectador para dejarse llevar ante la aventura que plantea. Ingredientes perfectos para el desastre, pero King logra crear aquí

un ecosistema perfecto para que todo eso sume en una fantasía tan sencilla en apariencia como difícil de hacer encajar todo lo que propone. Pese a que la campaña promocional ha intentado obviarlo en todo momento, 'Wonka' es un musical con todas las de la ley, algo que muestra desde su primera escena y que nunca llega a desdibujarse. Es cierto que las canciones pierden un poco de peso a medida que avanza la trama, pero están siempre ahí latiendo para recalcar esa energía tan particular de una película que no es que tenga muy poca vergüenza, pues simplemente apuesta por un enfoque en el que no hay espacio para el cinismo, ni siquiera cuando toca potenciar su vertiente más dramática. Sí es verdad que el personaje resulta mucho menos excéntrico de a lo que estábamos acostumbrados en iteraciones previas de Willy Wonka, pero es que King apuesta aquí por un elemento más tierno para que entendamos bien sus motivaciones y que resulta un eje fundamental para todo lo que se construye a su alrededor. Es ahí donde la película juega siempre más con esa tendencia al exceso que espera el espectador, pero lo hace de una forma bastante medida para nunca pierda ese equilibrio fundamental para que uno esté deseando dejarse llevar.
