Un bosque que cobra vida con luces de colores brillantes. Árboles que parecen crecer y cambiar ante tus ojos. Música que hace bailar a los árboles y abrazos que hacen que un árbol se ilumine. Todas estas maravillas son parte de Illumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum, una experiencia familiar al aire libre en el jardín público de los suburbios del oeste.

All these wonders are part of Illumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum, a family-friendly outdoor experience at the west suburban public garden.

One of the nation’s most well-known light displays, Illumination returns this year for its 11th holiday season. Guests can explore 19 festive features across 50 acres while strolling a one-mile trail that is paved and accessible to all. There will be music everywhere, and concession tents along the trail will serve hot chocolate, snacks, alcoholic beverages, and s’mores kits to be enjoyed at the warming bonfires.

Illumination will run from Nov. 18, 2023, through Jan. 6, 2024, at the Arboretum, located at Illinois Route 53 and Interstate Highway 88 in Lisle, Ill. Among visitor-favorite features of the light show are Symphony Woods, where lights coordinate with festive music across a sweeping landscape; Treemagination, in which a light sequence transforms a grove

of evergreens and evokes their life cycle through the seasons; Ornament Hill, a field of color-changing orbs that stretches away in the distance; Golden Glade, which evokes a prairie of light; and interactive features that invite children to create lighting effects among the trees.

Electric Illumination, a popular 18-and-older late-night experience with new music, will take place from 9:30 to 11 p.m.

Adults ages 21 and older can get a first look at the newest version of Illumination while sampling local brews along the trail during the IllumiBrew craft beer preview event, 5:30 to 10 p.m., on Nov. 16 and 17.

Why Is School Attendance Important?

The Effects of Chronic Absenteeism

Chronic absenteeism is pervasive: as many as one in six students in the United States miss enough school to be considered chronically absent, according to the US Department of Education. The negative effects of absenteeism on a student’s education can be profound, and they often carry into adulthood.

The harmful impact of chronic absenteeism threatens all students, but the risks are not borne equally. Students of color, students who live in poverty, and students with chronic health conditions or disabilities all experience disproportionately high absence rates.

Examining the causes of absenteeism and the effects it has on school performance, and ultimately life outcomes, provides a deeper understanding of why school attendance is so important.

Why Is School Attendance Important?

School attendance is a powerful predictor of student outcomes. In fact, irregular attendance can be a better predictor of whether students will drop out of school before graduation than test scores, according to the US Department of Education.

The correlation between attendance and dropout rates has important ramifications that go beyond the classroom. Compared to their peers who graduate, students who fail to complete their high school education are more likely to live in poverty, suffer poor health, and become involved in the criminal justice system.

Defining and Assessing Chronic Absenteeism in Schools Chronic absenteeism is widely defined as missing 10 percent or more of a school year.

Schools generally recognize three categories of absences: Excused absences are those with a valid reason and that have been communicated to the school by a parent. Student illness or other medical conditions are the most common types of excused absence; other reasons include religious observances, medical appointments, and family emergencies.

Unexcused absences, or truancy, occur when students miss school without a valid reason. Examples include deliberately skipping school as well as missing school for reasons deemed invalid by the school, such as oversleeping or missing the bus.

Disciplinary absences are a result of school suspension.

While these categories of absences are relatively consistent from one institution to another, school attendance policies and practices vary. For example, some school policies make little or no distinction between excused and unexcused absences. Similarly, school suspensions may be counted as absences by some school districts but not by others.

School Attendance Facts Even a cursory look at national attendance data reveals that the problem is widespread. The following attendance facts come from the CRDC that was released in 2018: More than seven million students in the US––16 percent of the student population–– missed 15 or more days of school.

Approximately 800 school districts reported more than 30 percent of their students missed at least three weeks of school.

Chronic absenteeism rates are highest in high schools, where about one in five students is chronically absent.

More than 20 percent of students were chronically absent in six states (Alaska, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington) and the District of Columbia.

Every state had schools that reported 10 percent or more of students as chronically absent.

Effects of Poor School Attendance When children are absent from school, they miss out on consistent instruction that is needed to develop basic skills. Children in early grades are particularly susceptible to falling behind in fundamental reading skills, which can have a snowball effect that impacts future learning.

Children who have learning and thinking differences can be especially vulnerable to the impact of absenteeism because missing school reduces opportunities for any interventions that might be necessary. If teachers

fail to realize that they need an intervention, they are more likely to attribute a learning difficulty to absenteeism, essentially confusing the symptom for the cause.

Students who fail to read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than students who achieve proficiency to drop out of high school, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, citing a study by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Adults without a high school education generally earn lower incomes and experience higher unemployment than their peers who do earn a high school diploma, putting them at greater risk for poverty.

Poor attendance can also have a negative effect on social and emotional development. For example, students who are chronically absent in the early years of their education may not learn crucial school readiness skills (abilities such as critical thinking, problem solving, and creative thinking), and can fall behind their peers in social-emotional development.

Excessive absences are also associated with lower scores on standardized tests, which typically assess primary skills and concepts.

While students pay the highest cost if they miss too much school, high absence rates also put a burden on teachers. Making up for lost instruction adds to their workload, and the valuable classroom time it takes up is a detriment to all students.

Addressing Chronic Absenteeism Just as chronic absenteeism has no single cause, it has no simple solution either.

Parents, teachers, administrators, and policymakers can all play a role in addressing high absence rates and improving children’s chances of receiving complete and effective education.

Strategies for Parents Parents who are concerned that their child has a problem with school attendance can employ several strategies: Talk with the child. Conversations are the first step to understanding root causes and working toward a solution.

Contact the school. Teachers, counselors, and administrators may be able to provide additional information that helps determine what is causing a child to miss school.

Contacting the school also starts a conversation that can be mutually beneficial, and it demonstrates engagement.

Consider an evaluation for an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan.

Both programs can provide special accommodations and support for students who are struggling with disabilities.

Set attendance goals with the child. Creating a plan and tracking progress can encourage better attendance and provide opportunities for conversations and support. Simple steps such as making sure a child gets enough sleep and taking steps to prepare for school the day or night before can also be effective.

McHenry’s tiny Riverwalk Shoppes have been ‘super busy’ during first Christmas season

The hustle and bustle of the holiday shopping season made McHenry’s Riverwalk Shoppes feel like they were on the set of a Hallmark Christmas movie.

That comment was one Erin Amendt, one of the proprietors at Mad Soyentist Candle Company, heard a few times on Small Business Saturday. To capitalize on the day that encourages holiday shoppers to spend money locally, the first Holiday Market at the Riverwalk District was promoted, adding more vendors and food trucks for the day at the site.

Although a light snow was falling Sunday, shoppers returned to the riverwalk, seeking holiday gifts at the specialty shops.

Brooke Sadowksi of Volo said she and a group of friends decided the snow made for the perfect shopping day.

“We love this weather,” she said, offering a sniff of the garlic-scented candle she’d just bought from Amendt as her dad’s Christmas present. “So this is a spoiler for my dad, Michael,” for what he was getting for Christmas.

Other vendors said they have seen a very busy last two weekends.

“It has been great with Small Business Saturday and last weekend, too. We have been super busy,” said Trevor Chrisman at The Trend Cellar. He guessed about 1,000 people came through on Saturday alone.

The store is looking at a permanent, brickand-mortar location on Green Street after its season at the Riverwalk closes.

Clara Klapperich, an employee at The Bumble Bread Company, said they sold out of their breads the weekend before Thanksgiving and are doing well the weekend after, too. The bread store is selling Christmas cinnamon roll orders through Dec. 18, with pickups set for Dec. 23 and 24.

The holiday version of the rolls will be evergreen-shaped, in festive packaging and feature sprinkles, Klapperich said.

The Bumble Bread owners, she said, are looking at permanent storefront locations, as well.

New feature coming to Miller Point Park A new feature at the adjacent Miller Point Park also could help to draw more customers to the Riverwalk Shoppes, which will continue operating Friday through Sunday until Dec. 31.

A new skating rink is set for construction Wednesday. The $85,000 price tag was paid for through donations raised by the RISE Up Foundation, a nonprofit group founded by McHenry Mayor Wayne Jett. The foundation is best known for its September music festivals that raised funds for the splash pad at Fort McHenry Park and for renovations at Miller Point Park.

Jett posted an announcement on the RISE Up Foundation’s Facebook page Nov. 13 about the fundraising effort for an ice rink at the park.

As of Nov. 22, the foundation and Jett had $67,000 in pledges and $45,000 in-hand. The ice rink manufacturer is offering the foundation a payment plan for the balance, allowing the rink’s installation to begin at 7:30 a.m.

An ice rink was discussed for Miller Point Park early on, McHenry Parks and Recreation Director Bill Hobson said. In an early tour of the park, he noted a spot behind the Riverwalk Shoppes was designed with the possibility of flooding the section to allow for a frozen pond.

“The goal was to create a space that provided a year-round gathering space for the

community. An ice rink was discussed from the start along with the shops becoming a Christkindlmarket. This was also the reason for heated bathrooms on-site,” Hobson wrote in an email.

McHenry has a rink at Fox Ridge Park, too, but one that is weather-dependent.

“Last year, we didn’t have enough consistently cold weather to ... open the rink until later in January,” Hobson said. Then, the city could keep the surface usable for only about a month.

When completed, the Miller Point rink will be 40 feet wide and 60 feet long. The park department will be responsible for its maintenance, Hobson said.

“Cada mes de mayo, veía videos de graduación de graduados de la preparatoria y lloraba”, dijo Nino. “Escuchaba a mi niña interior diciéndome, ¿cuándo me vas a llevar a una de estas ceremonias? Y yo dije: “Yo te llevaré”.

La madre de tres hijos quería enseñar a sus hijos a tener pasión por el aprendizaje.

“No pude hacer eso porque no tenía mi diploma de preparatoria. Quería liderar y ser un modelo a seguir”, dijo Nino. Pero tenía miedo de volver a fracasar.

Nino se enfrentó a sus miedos y se matriculó de nuevo. “Mis instructores en ECC fueron increíbles”, dijo. Me hicieron sentir muy cómodo”. Esta vez, completó sus clases de preparación y recibió su título. Al ofrecerse como voluntaria como ayudante de maestra, descubrió su pasión por la enseñanza y decidió obtener un título de asociado en educación infantil.

Ahora estudiante universitaria, Nino recuerda su graduación de GED como el primer paso para cumplir sus promesas a su familia y a sí misma. Su niña interior estaba allí con ella. “Recuerdo que caminé por la alfom-

bra roja y le dije: ‘Te pido disculpas porque me tomó un tiempo traerte aquí’. Pero aquí estamos. Fue una sensación increíble”.

After leaving high school without a degree, and attempting twice to complete her high school equivalency degree, or GED, Maria Nino of Carpentersville was discouraged.

“Every May, I would watch graduation videos from high school graduates, and cry,” Nino said. “I would hear my inner child telling me, when are you taking me to one of these ceremonies? And I said, “I

will take you.”

The mother of three wanted to teach her kids to have a passion for learning. “ I couldn’t do that because I didn’t have my high school diploma. I wanted to lead and be a role model,” Nino said. But she was afraid to fail again.

Nino faced her fears and enrolled again.

“My instructors at ECC were amazing, “ she said. “They made me feel very comfortable.”

This time, she completed her prep classes and received her degree. Volunteering as a teacher’s aide, she discovered a passion for teaching and decided to pursue an associate degree in early childhood education.

Now a college student, Nino recalls her GED graduation as the first step to fulfilling her promises to her family, and herself.

Her inner child was right there with her. “I remember walking the red carpet and I said, I apologize that it took me a while to take you here. But we are here. It was an amazing feeling.”

¿Cómo Navegar el Sistema Escolar?

La estructura de los sistemas escolares alrededor del mundo varía con la cultura en la que crecen los estudiantes. En los Estados Unidos, la educación es principalmente responsabilidad estatal y local. Son los estados y las comunidades, tanto como las organizaciones públicas y las privadas los que establecen escuelas, colegios, desarrollan los planes de estudio, y determinan los requisitos para las matrículas y las graduaciones. Lo que esto significa es que cuando la gente se muda de una villa, ciudad, estado o país a otro, la gente se tiene que sujetar a un sistema escolar, a un plan de estudio, y a una estructura diferente. Los recursos varían de un distrito escolar a otro, y esos dependen mayormente de la financiación local.

En el estado de Illinois, hay 852 distritos escolares atendiendo a 1.9 millones de estudiantes en grados desde el Kinder hasta el 12.

El 46.5% de los estudiantes pertenece a familias pobres, y el 13.7% está identificado con conocimientos limitados de inglés. En la mayoría de los distritos escolares, dos tercios del presupuesto se gasta en operaciones, mientras que solo un tercio se emplea en asuntos académicos. El adaptarse al nuevo entorno, a la cultura, al sistema municipal, a la escuela y al nuevo estilo de vida requiere tiempo, paciencia y trabajo. Los recursos disponibles también varían. La realidad local y global de la migracion y el aumento de la población demanda la orientación apropiada y la guía para que los recién llegados se puedan adaptar y puedan sobrevivir apropiadamente. Imagínense encontrarse en un lugar que habla un idioma diferente, con clima y costumbres distintas.

Los niños se preguntan por qué su amiguito que vive al frente de la casa, en la misma calle, va a una escuela diferente. Los padres se pueden preguntar por qué la secretaria no puede encontrar la chamarra olvidada en el autobús escolar, o por qué el director no puede decirle a la maestra que corrija el apellido en la libreta de calificaciones.

Las mudanzas presentan retos para la integración a los nuevos entornos, a la nueva cultura y a sus sistemas. RotaryMari@yahoo.com The structure of the school systems around the world vary as the culture the students grow up in. Education in the United States is primarily a State and local responsibility. It is States and communities, as well as public and private organizations of all kinds, that establish schools and colleges, develop curricula, and determine requirements for enrollment and graduation. What this means is that when people move from one village, city, state, country to another, people will have to subject their children to a different school system, curriculum, and structure altogether. Resources vary from school district to another, and those will largely depend on the local funding.

In the State of Illinois, there are 852 school districts serving 1.9 million k-12 scholars. 46.5% of the students belong to low income families, and 13.7% are identified English learners. In most school districts, two thirds of the school budget is spent in operations, while only one third is spent in academics. De acuerdo con el reporte de NBC News, funcionarios están batallando para albergar a inmigrantes y distintas voces se preguntan si las medidas recientemente anunciadas por funcionarios estatales y municipales destinadas a ayudar a los inmigrantes a establecerse más rápidamente en la ciudad funcionarán.

De acuerdo con Karina Ayala Bermejo, directora ejecutiva y presidente del Instituto del Progreso Latino, “Hay muchas cosas en juego en el invierno de Chicago, y no podemos darnos el lujo de que nadie en

nuestro hermoso estado o ciudad se congele porque no nos dimos cuenta de esto, que muera porque no nos dimos cuenta de esto”.

Lo anterior tiendo en cuenta que, en la ciudad, más de 21,700 solicitantes de asilo y migrantes han llegado desde agosto de 2022, cuando el programa de autobuses para migrantes del gobernador de Texas, Greg Abbott, llegó a Chicago.

La afluencia ha puesto a prueba la red de servicios sociales de Chicago. No ha habido suficientes camas en refugios para todos los necesitados. Y el proceso de trasladar a las personas de un refugio temporal a una vivienda permanente e independiente ha sido lento.

Expert tips for selecting and caring for a live Christmas tree LISLE, ILL. — As shopping for live Christmas trees gets underway this holiday season, the tree experts at The Morton Arboretum recommend choosing one carefully and caring for it properly to ensure it stays fresh through the season.

“People often buy live evergreen trees long before Dec. 25,” said Spencer Campbell, the Arboretum’s Plant Clinic manager.

“A tree that is not cared for can dry out and become a fire hazard. A well cared for tree, with a constant water supply, should remain green and fragrant for several weeks, well through the holidays.”

The Arboretum’s Plant Clinic provides free advice by phone or email for those with questions about how to care for trees and plants, including Christmas trees. Whether tree shoppers intend to have theirs up for six weeks or one week, Campbell offers these recommendations for keeping trees fresh.

1. Plan for watering. A cut evergreen tree needs water like flowers in a vase. Vessels where water flows are right under the tree’s bark, so it’s important to keep the bark undamaged. Tree stands should hold at least a gallon of water.

2. Choose a tree that will fit in the stand. Never try to whittle down the trunk to fit a too-small stand. Doing so will destroy the water vessels under the bark so the tree can’t take up water, and it will quickly dry out. Bring the stand to the tree lot to ensure the chosen tree fits.

3. Buy a fresh tree. A more recently cut tree will provide greater time to enjoy it before it dries out and becomes a hazard. The freshest tree is one cut at the time of purchase from a choose-and-cut tree farm. Trees from small local lots are likely to have been harvested within a few days or weeks, making them fairly fresh. Wherever a tree is purchased, check it carefully for freshness.

4. Test for green, firm, flexible needles.

To judge whether a tree is fresh, use a hand to gently brush a branch. If many needles fall off or if the needles feel stiff or crackly, the tree is dry and should not be bought. Needles on a fresh tree are plumped with water.

They should be firmly attached, pliable and fragrant. It’s normal for an evergreen in autumn to lose some yellow or brown needles, but dropping a significant number of green needles is an indication the tree is drying out.

Don’t buy a tree if the seller won’t let the customer unwrap it to examine its freshness.

5. Select a suitable species. Some evergreen species dry out more slowly and keep their needles longer than others. Needle types and branching forms also differ. Some types of trees have soft, bendy branches, while others have stiff branches that can support heavy ornaments. 6. Make a new cut. When an evergreen’s trunk is cut, sap quickly dries and seals the

surface. To open the tree to water, cut off about an inch from the bottom, or ask for that to be done at the tree lot. Place the tree in water within about an hour after it’s cut to prevent sap from sealing the trunk again.

7. Store a tree in water. If a tree will be kept outdoors before being set up inside, place it in a bucket of water in a sheltered spot or in an unheated garage. Top off the water in the bucket daily.

8. Keep the tree far from heat. Once it’s set up indoors, position the tree well away from heat sources such as a radiator, heating vent or fireplace. Even a very sunny window can dry out a tree. Place the tree stand on a waterproof surface, such as a plastic tarp, to protect carpeting or wood floors.

9. Fill it up. As soon as the tree is in place, fill the stand with warm tap water. Check the water at least twice daily and refill as necessary. Never allow the water level to fall below the bottom of the trunk. If the cut surface is exposed to air and seals with sap, the tree will not be able to absorb any more water.

10. Use plain water. Don’t add aspirin, sugar or any other substance. Water is all the tree needs.

11. Decorate with lights that stay at a cool temperature. Older incandescent tree lights run hot. Newer LED lights not only use much less energy, but because they are more efficient and cooler, they don’t dry out a tree nearly as much.

12. Keep checking for freshness. It’s normal for a tree to lose a few needles every day. If it begins to lose many needles and the branches become brittle, the tree has dried out. Remove it from the house for safety’s sake.

A stitch in time: Joffrey Ballet costume crew stands ready to fix any rips in ‘The Nutcracker’ From repairing torn pants to stopping the walnuts from bumping into each other on stage, the work of Joffrey Ballet’s sewing team goes on long after the show starts.

The crotch in your pants tears open — wide.

You’re not at home or in a bathroom stall at work. You’re on stage in front of an audience of thousands, including lots of children — a few of whom have started snickering.

In the darkness of the wings, a tiny light, a beacon of hope. You leap off into the shadows, and within seconds — literally, because you have to be back on stage again almost instantaneously — a woman in black, wearing a headlamp, produces a needle and thread and she sews you up.

It ain’t pretty, but it will do until the next costume change.

“I’ve had to fix that at least twice — once was the first show I ran for the Joffrey,” explained Jerica Hucke, the draper for Chicago’s Joffrey Ballet, of said costume incident.

It turns out, the costume folks at the Joffrey thrive on such drama, but they’d just rather you didn’t see it.

“It’s kind of fun. The adrenaline of it — that’s why we do live theater,” said Ellie Cotey, the costume manager at Joffrey.

In the Joffrey’s costume shop at 10 E. Randolph, it’s a “super, super busy time,” says Cotey, adding some finishing touches to the bodice of the sugar plum fairy costume on a recent afternoon. Joffrey’s annual “Nutcracker” — the company show that sells the most tickets each year (in part because it has the longest run of any of its presentations) — opens Dec. 2 at the Lyric Opera House.

If it’s a chaotic time, it’s a controlled chaos. Three stitchers sit near a large window, working mostly in silence as they apply finishing touches to various costumes.

Cotey’s team of six, including herself, has a combined 120 years of experience in the trade.

Beside the stitchers is a wall of thread spools, colors so bright they’d make a rainbow jealous. Another wall is lined with plastic tubs with all sorts of labels: “Fur,” “horse hair,” “pearls,” “gold metallic trim” and something called “braid and gimp.”

There are about 260 costumes in total for “The Nutcracker,” most of them on hangers on racks, waiting to be packed into road boxes that will be loaded into a truck and taken to the Lyric.

“We hope it doesn’t look jarringly different,” says Cotey, pointing out the old fairy costume, which she says had become a bit “dingy.” “The goal is to have it look sparkly and new.”

In an adjoining room, objects that bring to mind the leathery eggs from the 1979 movie “Alien” sit scattered about the costume shop’s laundry room. They’re actually the ballet’s giant walnuts, and child actors will be enclosed in them from head to waist during the World’s Fair scene in the show. When this version of the show opened in 2016, they were made of papier-mâché.

“They were beautiful, but they were heavy, ... they had wood frames in them and they kept getting really, really banged up every year because the kids couldn’t see out of them, so on stage, they’d bang into each other,” Hucke said.

So Hucke came up with the idea of using a “thermo plastic” mesh, which is lightweight, can be painted and, most importantly, allows the kids to see out.

“They do bump, but it bounces a little bit better and they can see [out] so they do a little less bumping, which is kind of sad because it was very funny,” Hucke said.

Cotey, Hucke and the rest of the team will all be somewhere backstage — and out of sight — during the run of the show.

They’ll each carry a little pouch, contain-

ing needles, scissors, thread, safety pins.

They can’t do repairs in the dark. Some used to have what’s called a “bite lamp,” which is clamped between the teeth and leaves the hands free, but COVID changed all of that. Now folks use tiny head lamps or lights that dangle around their necks.

And like a pit crew, Cotey’s team is ready to sprint into action at a moment’s —

maybe a fraction of a moment’s — notice.

“It’s fine if your heart is pounding as long as your hands aren’t shaking,” Hucke said. “You have to be really confident in that moment that the thing you’re doing — that you can get it done in the time you need to do it. ... Anything could happen backstage and you have to always be prepared,” Hucke said.

El polivalente jengibre Carolina Pikakacho Fronteras de la Noticia - EFEsalud El jengibre (Zingiber officinale) también llamado kion en Perú es la raíz de una planta herbácea con flor que pertenece a la familia de las zingiberáceas, igual que la cúrcuma o el cardamomo, informa Amanda Dutruc, farmacéutica.

“Tiene un sabor y un aroma picantes, con un intenso toque cítrico y fresco. Aunque se puede adquirir casi en cualquier sitio, aún es un alimento un tanto desconocido, pero con muchas posibilidades y beneficios”, señala.

“Es una planta originaria del sureste asiático muy utilizada en la medicina tradicional, que puede conseguirse en muchos lugares del mundo y tomarse de muchas maneras (fresco, seco o en polvo), utilizándose principalmente en la gastronomía, aunque también se emplea en cosmética”, añade.

Señala que su gran número de beneficios para la salud provienen, sobre todo, de uno de sus componentes más importantes, el gingerol, un aceite esencial que confiere al jengibre su sabor picante y que es el compuesto activo responsable de la mayoría de sus propiedades medicinales.

Además, el jengibre contiene muchos nutrientes, dado que en estado crudo es rico en minerales como calcio, sodio, potasio o fósforo y en ciertas vitaminas, como la C, la B2, la B3 y la B6.

Destaca Dutruc que la raíz del jengibre tiene propiedades antiinflamatorias “siendo útil para aliviar los dolores menstruales o la inflamación intestinal; antioxidantes, por lo que contribuye a frenar el envejecimiento y reducir el daño celular; y antibacterianas que favorecen la eliminación de microorganismos infecciosos de cuerpo y de algunas bacterias bucales nocivas”.

“También ayuda a combatir la halitosis, haciendo que el aliento huela mejor; tiene un efecto analgésico, sien-

do útil para combatir los dolores de cabeza y de tipo artrítico; y tiene propiedades anticoagulantes que retardan la formación de coágulos que pueden ser peligrosos si se crean dentro de un vaso sanguíneo”, agrega esta experta.

Asimismo, el consumo de esta planta medicinal y especia “ayuda a aliviar las náuseas y mareos debidos al balanceo durante los viajes; favorece la expectoración, ayudando a aliviar la congestión y otros síntomas del resfriado; y podría contribuir a reducir los niveles de azúcar en la sangre, según algunos estudios recientes, aunque aún preliminares”, completa.

Antes de consumirlo con frecuencia, “recomendamos consultarlo con el médico, por ejemplo, en los casos de las mujeres embarazadas, quienes toman medicamentos o las personas que sufren diabetes, puesto que puede dar lugar a interacciones farmacológicas”, advierte esta farmacéutica.

“A pesar de que el jengibre tiene muchos beneficios para nuestro organismo, a veces consumirlo puede ser contraproducente, por lo que la persona debe consultar con un especialista si sufre hipertensión, toma medicamentos anticoagulantes, tiene gastritis, úlceras gástricas, colon irritable, colitis o diabetes, y también a partir del tercer mes del embarazo”, recomienda.

Para aprovechar todos los beneficios de esta planta, la experta de DosFarma aconseja consumir el jengibre mejor fresco que en polvo, ya que contiene más gingerol, y propone las siguientes maneras saludables de hacerlo: En infusiones “Para hacer un té de jengibre, solo hace falta hervir unos trozos de raíz en un recipiente con agua durante unos quince minutos, dejar que repose y añadirle un chorrito de limón”.

En cápsulas Esta forma de consumir el jengibre es ideal para quienes quieran reforzar su sistema inmunitario, reducir la sensación de mareo y náuseas, ayudar al buen funcionamiento intestinal, combatir la fatiga o favorecer el bienestar digestivo, de acuerdo con esta farmacéutica.

Sobre la piel “Las propiedades antioxidantes del gingerol pueden prevenir la degradación acelerada de colágeno y proteger nuestra piel de unos agentes nocivos llamados radicales libres, retrasando su envejecimiento y la aparición de arrugas”. .

“El jengibre puede producir de forma leve, diarrea, acidez, molestias estomacales y hemorragia durante la menstruación, además puede disminuir los niveles de glucosa en sangre en pacientes con diabetes y puede interactuar con fármacos anticoagulantes produciendo hemorragias y hematomas, siendo su uso desaconsejable durante la lactancia y sujeto a consulta médica durante el embarazo”, concluye esta experta.

Tendencias alimenticias y su relación con el medio ambiente

Carolina Pikacho Fronteras de la Notiica - ecologiaverde.com Cada persona adulta decide la forma en la que quiere alimentarse (exceptuando prohibiciones médicas por nuestras propias circunstancias) y muchas de estas elecciones están apoyadas por razones éticas, medio ambientales, de respeto al animal, de rebeldía contra la industria actual, de protesta, de salud y muchos otros tipos. El debate sobre la forma de alimentarse está presente en todas las esferas de la vida y cada uno tiene sus razones válidas para decantarse por una u otra opción, haciendo uso de su propia libertad. A continuación, te presentamos algunas de las formas de alimentarse más implantadas en la sociedad.

Omnívoros significa que se puede comer de todo: verdura, productos animales, frutas, etcétera. Hoy en día, la gran mayoría de la población no se impone ninguna restricción, aunque el vegetarianismo ha irrumpido con fuerza en los últimos años. Muchas personas creen que esta forma de comer es poco respetuosa con el medio ambiente, aunque ser vegetariano no es sinónimo de ser ecológico. En definitiva, una persona puede ser omnívora y seguir preceptos ecológicos, como vamos a ver a continuación.

A grandes rasgos, podríamos definirlos como las personas que han excluido la carne (y el pescado) completamente de su dieta. Actualmente, hay muchas

personas que comen así y han proliferado los restaurantes, los mercados y las ferias de esta forma de alimentación. Las personas vegetarianas señalan las innumerables ventajas que su alimentación conlleva, entre ellas: – Un beneficio en la salud, al comer más legumbres, cereales, semillas, frutas y verduras, alimentos muy sanos y desintoxicantes.

– Una manera deliciosa de perder peso y sentirse bien.

– Prevención de enfermedades cardíacas, relacionadas con la ingesta de carne.

– Una vida más ecológica. No comer carne ahorra mucha agua porque para criar a un animal consumimos mucha agua, la cual podría usarse para regar plantas y verduras.

– Menos contaminación. La industria cárnica contamina en exceso.

– Mejor conciencia. Es inmoral contribuir a matar a animales cuando es posible alimentarse de otro modo.

Al contrario que los veganos, los vegetarianos comen en ocasiones productos derivados de los animales, como huevos o lácteos.

Se estima que, en la actualidad, hay más de 600.000 millones en el mundo, especialmente en naciones como Alemania, donde ya un 8% de la población es puramente vegetariana. Según el presidente de la Vegetarier Bund Deutschland, el vegetarianismo aumenta a razón de un 10% por año.

Las ofertas no incluirán el impuesto federal sobre artículos de uso y consumo o el impuesto estatal sobre ventas por los materiales a incorporar o aquellos que se consuman totalmente durante la ejecución del trabajo. El Distrito de Parques emitirá un certificado de exención impositiva a petición del licitador. El número de exención impositiva del Distrito solo será utilizado por el licitador que gane el trabajo de este proyecto.

No se pueden retirar las ofertas, y todas estas serán definitivas durante sesenta (60) días después de la apertura de la oferta.

El contratista seleccionado también tendrá que cumplir con todas las leyes, las normas, las reglamentaciones y los decretos federales, estaduales y locales correspondientes, incluso, entre otros, aquellos pertenecientes a la igualdad de oportunidad de empleo. “Remember and Commit” World AIDS Day Event on December 1st

The Health Department encourages everyone to join the free event to commemorate World AIDS Day. LAKE COUNTY, ILL. — Each year, on December 1st, we commemorate World AIDS Day. This important awareness day is a time to reflect on and celebrate the global progress in the HIV/AIDS journey, recognize the challenges remaining, and honor the lives lost. On this day, we also renew our commitment to supporting the well-being of those with HIV, as well as those at risk for infection. Join the Lake County Stands Against Stigma Coalition from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Waukegan Park District, 412 S. Lewis Avenue, Waukegan.

The event is free and open to the public and will feature a candle-lighting ceremony, songs performed by Pascale M. Trouillot and accompaniment by Ken McMullen, a drag performance by Lola Madison, and much more. Attendees will learn about the Illinois Getting to Zero initiative, which aims to see zero new HIV infections in Illinois and zero people living with HIV who are not on treatment by 2030. Attendees will also learn about ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic with an emphasis on HIV testing, increasing access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medications, and highlighting the importance of viral suppression.

The U.S. Government (USG) theme for World AIDS Day 2023, Remember and Commit, pays tribute to the lives lost to HIV/ AIDS.The theme also emphasizes the collective responsibility to improve access to care.

The Lake County Health Department’s Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) program, also known as Need2Know Lake County, works with clients and community members on HIV prevention with services, including HIV testing, PrEP, treatment, and care.

All are encouraged to attend and wear a red ribbon to show their support and stand against HIV stigma and discrimination.

EE.UU. y México están entre los primeros puestos del medallero de los Juegos Parapanamericanos La delegación de Estados Unidos quedó en el segundo lugar del medallero total con 166 medallas, de las cuales 55 son de oro

Por Gerardo Anaya Fronteras de la Noticia - EFE La delegación de Brasil dominó por quinta ocasión consecutiva el medallero general de los Juegos Parapanamericanos, cuya séptima edición se realizó en Santiago de Chile, el mismo escenario de los Panamericanos en los que México consiguió 16 boletos directos para los Juegos Olímpicos de París 2024.

La representación de Estados Unidos se quedó con el segundo lugar del medallero total con 55 oros entre 166 medallas.

México terminó en el cuarto lugar y Argentina repitió el quinto que sacó en los Juegos Parapanamericanos de Lima 2019.

Los brasileños lideraron las bochas, el fútbol para ciegos, el fútbol PC (parálisis cerebral), gólbol, para judo, para bádminton, para levantamiento de pesas, para taekwondo y el para tenis de mesa.

La delegación colombiana estuvo, incluso, segunda en estas justas a dos jornadas del cierre obteniendo la segunda posición en fútbol para ciegos y ciclismo de pista y ruta, pero Estados Unidos le superó el sábado en la fecha donde cerró la mayor parte de los deportes, de los cuales dominó cinco de los 17 en competencia.

SHAKIRA ENTREGA AL JUZGADO LOS 6 MILLONES RECLAMADOS EN SU SEGUNDA CAUSA POR FRAUDE FISCAL Carolina Pikacho, Fronteras de la Noticia - EFE La cantante colombiana Shakira depositó en un juzgado los 6,6 millones de euros que le reclama la Fiscalía por fraude fiscal en 2018, en la segunda causa que tiene abierta por delitos contra la Hacienda española.

Según informaron a EFE fuentes jurídicas, la artista entregó el pasado agosto en un juzgado de instrucción de Esplugues de Llobregat, cerca de Barcelona (España), la suma supuestamente defraudada, mientras está a la espera de que el magistrado la cite a declarar como investigada por esta segunda causa abierta.

La cantidad consignada por la cantante, según avanzó El Periódico de Catalunya, le permitiría beneficiarse de una atenuante de reparación del daño en el caso de que acabe condenada de nuevo por fraude fiscal, al haber devuelto el dinero supuestamente evadido.

Esa atenuante fue la que propició el pacto que la artista alcanzó con la Fiscalía y las acusaciones particulares ejercidas por la Agencia Tributaria española y el Gobierno regional de Cataluña para evitar la cárcel, a cambio de una multa millonaria, en su primer juicio por fraude fiscal en España.

Shakira aceptó cerca de 7,8 millones de euros de multa tras reconocer ante el tribunal que defraudó 14,5 millones a Hacienda entre 2012 y 2014, con una pena de tres

años de prisión por seis delitos contra el fisco que no tendrá que cumplir al acordar ese pago.

Antes incluso de que la Fiscalía presentara su querella, Shakira ya había devuelto a Hacienda los 14,5 millones defraudados, lo que no impidió que el ministerio público siguiera adelante con las acciones penales.

La cantante tiene otro proceso abierto en la sala contencioso-administrativa de la Audiencia Nacional española por un supuesto fraude fiscal cometido en 2011, por el que ya ha desembolsado unos 60 millones de euros mientras sigue a la espera de que se resuelva el recurso que presentó contra la liquidación tributaria.

En la nueva querella que investiga el juzgado de Esplugues de Llobregat, la Fiscalía acusa a la cantante de defraudar 5,3 millones de la declaración de la renta de 2018, correspondientes a ingresos por su gira de ese año y por la cesión de sus derechos intelectuales, más otros 773.600 euros en el impuesto de patrimonio por los cerca de 12 millones que posee en inmuebles y activos financieros.

Para defraudar al fisco, sostiene la Fiscalía, la querellada se sirvió de un entramado societario y presentó “declaraciones inveraces” del impuesto sobre la renta, en las que omitió declarar rendimientos y se dedujo gastos que no procedían, con lo que logró reducir la cuota a pagar a Hacienda.

Open Door is again proud to bring its Annual World AIDS Day Remembrance to the Gail Borden Public Library, located at 270 Grove Avenue, Elgin noon-2:00 PM. World AIDS Day is an international day dedicated to raising awareness about the AIDS pandemic. Every year on December 1st, the world gathers to remember the stories of those lost, educate others about its impact, and rally to eliminate the devastating stigma associated with the disease.
