Un bosque que cobra vida con luces de colores brillantes. Árboles que parecen crecer y cambiar ante tus ojos. Música que hace bailar a los árboles y abrazos que hacen que un árbol se ilumine. Todas estas maravillas son parte de Illumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum, una experiencia familiar al aire libre en el jardín público de los suburbios del oeste. See Many-Colored Magic Among the Trees at Illumination A woodland that comes alive with sparkling colored lights. Trees that seem to grow and change before your eyes. Music that makes trees dance and hugs that make a tree light up. All these wonders are part of Illumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum, a family-friendly outdoor experience at the west suburban public garden. One of the nation’s most well-known light displays, Illumination returns this year for its 11th holiday season. Guests can explore 19 festive features across 50 acres while strolling a one-mile trail that is paved and accessible to all. There will be music everywhere, and concession tents along the trail will serve hot chocolate, snacks, alcoholic beverages, and s’mores kits to be enjoyed at the warming bonfires. Illumination will run from Nov. 18, 2023, through Jan. 6, 2024, at the Arboretum, located at Illinois Route 53 and Interstate Highway 88 in Lisle, Ill. Among visitor-favorite features of the light show are Symphony Woods, where lights coordinate with festive music across a sweeping landscape; Treemagination, in which a light sequence transforms a grove
of evergreens and evokes their life cycle through the seasons; Ornament Hill, a field of color-changing orbs that stretches away in the distance; Golden Glade, which evokes a prairie of light; and interactive features that invite children to create lighting effects among the trees. Electric Illumination, a popular 18-and-older late-night experience with new music, will take place from 9:30 to 11 p.m. Fridays, Dec. 8, 15, 22 and 29. Adults ages 21 and older can get a first look at the newest version of Illumination while sampling local brews along the trail during the IllumiBrew craft beer preview event, 5:30 to 10 p.m., on Nov. 16 and 17. Born of the pandemic, District 214 program for student needs expands reach BY CHRISTOPHER PLACEK

A student who is the sole source of income for her family, amid her single mother’s illness. Another student who lost everything, including a pet dog, in a house fire. A family whose father passed away, mother was laid off of work, and had no heat in their house as the winter set in. Those are just a few of the harrowing stories that social workers in Northwest Suburban High School District 214 say they’ve come across. Sometimes the solution -- albeit temporary -- is simple. Like paying for a couple nights’ stay at a local hotel, writing a check to the landlord, or providing a gift card to buy groceries. When social workers are able to deliver that good news, there’s a sense of relief, gratitude, and usually tears from students and their parents who are going through tough times. “It’s things that we wouldn’t even think of that we might take for granted, but for the family is a huge deal,” said Raymundo Galarza, a social worker at District 214’s alternative schools at the Forest View Educational Center in Arlington Heights. Born of the pandemic, the District 214 Education Foundation’s 214 Cares emergency financial assistance program is here to stay, now addressing a variety of needs of students and their families, from helping pay
the rent to putting food on the table. 214 Cares is one of five recipients of a grant from the Neighbors in Need campaign, a Daily Herald and McCormick Foundation partnership that helps fund agencies that address hunger, homelessness and health care disparities in the suburbs. The emergency support program launched in District 214 at the onset of the pandemic, distributing $106,000 to more than 350 school district families in 2020 and 2021. At the time, the primary issues for families were the loss of jobs and housing. Since then, the foundation has supported dozens of other families with $35,000 in emergency assistance. But the needs have grown and are varied, so officials are trying to sustain the 214 Cares fund by making an appeal for donor support. “Since COVID, there have been other needs that have come forward that are quite poignant: medical costs, utilities, transportation, memorial expenses for students and families,” said Michael Happ, the foundation’s executive director. “So there’s a real hunger for us to have an organizing, easily identifiable, and recognized by the community fund. People know they can give to 214 Cares and it will go to help those kids and their families in our community that need it.” The greatest, most common needs are for rental assistance, clothing and food, said Galarza, who is among some two dozen social workers across the district’s six high

schools and specialized schools program. They routinely will purchase gift cards to Jewel, Walmart, Fiesta Market in Wheeling and Fresh Farms in Wheeling. They also stock clothing closets and food pantries throughout the school district. “Food really is the biggest thing. We take it for granted so much,” he said. “Money that we would spend on ourselves could buy enough meals for three people.” Officials have set a goal of raising up to $25,000, which is roughly the amount between what families request and what the foundation is able to afford. There’s no set limit on how much an individual family may receive, but each request is reviewed by Happ with oversight from the foundation finance committee and board of trustees.

Gina Diaz makes Top Latino Lawyers list, earns Diverse Lawyers Making a Difference Award (BERWYN, ILLINOIS) —Gina Diaz, managing attorney of Diaz Case Law in Berwyn, Illinois, was recognized by Hispanic and law publications for her work by Latino Leaders Magazine in its list of the Top Latino Lawyers in The Country. The publication chose the winners for their focus on diversifying their field and advancing civil rights within the tech field and across the United States. “To be recognized for this award is a great achievement,” Diaz said. “My law firm is a resource for many of our clients who come from immigrant communities and don’t know where to turn if they need simple legal services such as translation of documents. Another way that I serve my local community is through my organization called We Win, LLC. The mission there is to help women grow and build their wealth through real estate investing.”

Giving Churros can save lives this Holiday Season
Little Village churro shop’s effort to benefit Lung Association CHICAGO – Changing lives one churro at a time. That’s what husband and wife Aldo Rios and Ana Maciel hope to do this holiday season with each sweet Mexican fritter rolled in cinnamon sugar. Owners of El Churro Shop in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood, the couple is running a “LungLove Churro” special between November 15 and December 31 that will benefit the American Lung Association in Greater Chicago. “We lose a lot of lives because of lack of awareness. Lung disease affects a large portion of the Latino community, and we feel it’s because people don’t know about the resources and treatments available to them,” said Maciel, who also suffers from allergic asthma and suffered a pulmonary embolism in 2015. The couple isn’t new to philanthropy. They’ve participated in multiple charitable
events but this is the first time El Churro Shop is partnering with a non-profit like the Lung Association. They’re grateful that their churro shop allows them to raise awareness and funding for local programs, education and research. “We want our shop to be a vessel to do good for our community, get the neighborhood involved and connect people with resources they didn’t know are there for them,” said Rios. The special includes “Corporate/Family Pack” options, as well as in-person “Bonus Box” options. “Our LungLove Churros are sprinkled with blue sugar to make them more attractive and reflective of the Lung Association’s brand and color. We want to make them relate to the cause so that people can get familiar with the organization and their resources,” said Rios.

Luchar contra las bacterias ocultas en la boca es la mejor forma de prevenir que ingresen al torrente sanguíneo y causen otros daños a la salud. Por largo tiempo la preocupación sobre la higiene bucal se ha limitado a tener una sonrisa bonita y evitar el mal aliento, pero los recientes descubrimientos sobre el daño que pueden ocasionar las bacterias invisibles en la boca obligan a tomar nuevas medidas. En la boca existen alrededor de 100 millones de bacterias por cada mililitro de saliva y, si no se controlan a tiempo, pueden ingresar al torrente sanguíneo y afectar otras partes del cuerpo. Un mal control de bacterias en la boca puede aumentar el riesgo de sufrir ataques cardíacos, desarrollar enfermedades degenerativas como Alzheimer o incrementara la probabilidad de dar a luz bebés prematuros.

Estos estudios preliminares obligan a todos a poner más atención a la salud bucal, explica Eduardo Álvarez Franyutti, director de cuidado oral en Procter & Gamble, pues estudios médicos destacan más de 50 enfermedades que en los últimos años se han asociado a la placa bacteriana por el ingreso de infecciones bucales al torrente sanguíneo. Entre ellas se encuentran episodios cardiovasculares, partos prematuros, bebés con bajo peso e incluso disfunción eréctil. El control de bacterias es aún más importante si se considera el tipo de alimentación de: alta en azúcares, carbohidratos, salsas, limón y refrescos, entre otros. Al aumentar el nivel de ácidos y toxinas en la boca se favorece la aparición de bacterias. La boca normalmente tiene un pH neutro y debemos tener un mantenimiento bucal para que la boca conserve ese pH óptimo. El medio ácido es propicio para la proliferación de bacterias y estas son las que generan gingivitis y periodontitis, que es una inflamación crónica, una infección, y si se combina con otros factores, generalmente asociados al estrés, puede potenciar otros problemas en la salud. Estos datos son alarmantes, pero antes que preocuparnos, debemos ocuparnos de las soluciones. Y las soluciones son sencillas” resalta Monteagudo. “Hay que dar más información a la gente para que se tome en serio la salud bucal y con eso prevenga estas enfermedades.

Descubre el ‘Sabor de la Navidad’ en la nueva película de Salma Hayek Carolina Pikacho, Fronteras de la Noticia - elsiglodetorreon.com.mx La película ‘El Sabor de la Navidad’, con la producción de Salma Hayek, se sumerge en los conceptos de familia, amor y amistad en torno a la comida mexicana, elemento central de la trama, según reveló el elenco de actores y actrices en una entrevista. La película, también producida por José Tamez bajo Ventanarosa Productions, presenta tres historias entrelazadas ambientadas en los días previos a la Navidad. Aunque en un principio parecen no tener relación, convergen finalmente bajo el tema común de la comida y la calidez. Armando Hernández, actor que interpreta a Santiago en la película, resume la trama con tres palabras: “Familia, amor y amistad”. Andrés Almeida, quien da vida a Genaro, complementa que la historia refleja muchos aspectos de una Navidad mexicana, abordando diversas problemáticas que se desarrollan en esos días y cómo se resuelven. La narrativa se desarrolla junto a Mariana Treviño, que interpreta a Valeria, y ambos personajes encarnan a los cocineros responsables de preparar la cena de Nochebuena para una familia en la Ciudad de México, donde se desarrolla la trama. Entre ellos surge algo más que una relación laboral. “Enseñamos el ritual de los preparativos en la víspera de una celebración, que es juntarnos”, explica la actriz Treviño. Destacan que el menú no es el tradicional de estas fechas, sino que tiene una magia única, ya que se basa en la gastronomía ancestral de Yucatán, en el sureste de México, y fue preparado por el reconocido investigador y chef Ricardo Muñoz Zurita exclusivamente para la película.
La actriz mexicoestadounidense Mónica Dionne, quien interpreta a Carmela, una madre de familia distanciada de una de sus hijas subraya la importancia de los platillos navideños en la trama. Según su personaje, este año decide ordenar la comida en lugar de cocinar, y su hija Valeria es la encargada. Junto con Genaro, Valeria conoce a Santiago y Chava, interpretados por Hernández y Juan Carlos Medellín, respectivamente, quienes desempeñan el papel de Santa Claus trabajando en la Alameda Central haciéndose fotos con niños. Hernández destaca que lo más difícil de la grabación, realizada en primavera, fue “el traje”, y alcanzó su punto culminante en una escena “muy de acción”. A pesar de la intensidad, Medellín señala que fue muy divertido. El debate LGBTTTI entra en escena a medida que los cocineros y los Santa Claus se reúnen con la familia de Carmela, quien debe abordar la identidad de género de una de sus hijas. Dionne señala que ‘El Sabor de la Navidad’ aborda la diversidad sexual desde una perspectiva “sin juicio” por ambas partes. “Tampoco se puede esperar que la gente entienda a la primera cuando ha estado acostumbrada toda su vida a otra manera. Cada uno tiene su tiempo y mientras haya buena voluntad para tratar de entender esto es lo principal”, opina la actriz. Todo el elenco comparte la idea de que la película representa “muy bien” el espíritu navideño y la “experiencia en el sincretismo” de la cultura mexicana. Carolina Pikacho, Fronteras de la Noticia - EFE Nacida el 30 de mayo de 2000, Sheynnis Palacios es licenciada en Comunicación Social por la Universidad Centroamericana (UCA), de orientación jesuita, donde practicó voleibol. Además, es conductora y presentadora del programa “Entiende tu mente”, una iniciativa social que creó después de superar la ansiedad, con el objetivo de ayudar a otras personas y tratar temas de salud mental. Sheynnis Palacios, representante de Nicaragua, se coronó como la primera centroamericana en obtener el título de Miss Universo en la 72 edición del certamen, que tuvo lugar en El Salvador. La nueva reina de la belleza universal, que sorprendió al público y a los jueces con su carisma, recibió la corona de manos de la estadounidense R’Bonney Gabriel, Miss Universo 2022. mismo, tiene su podcast “Entiende tu mente”, proyecto social que lanzó tras batallar contra la ansiedad y con el que busca ayudar a otras personas. Palacios batalló varios años contra la ansiedad. Es más, uno de los episodios que afectó su salud fue cuando estaba en una competencia: un perro atacó a su perrita, al punto de sacarle un ojo. No le contaron nada hasta que bajó del escenario, fue en ese momento que comenzó a temblar, jalarse el cabello y golpearse brazos y piernas. “Es algo que sucede y estoy aquí para ser vocera de ellos [los que sufren ansiedad] y que sepan que no solo les pasa a las personas que están detrás de esta pantalla, también le sucede a personas que tienen grandes personalidades. Lo importante es saber manejarlo”, señaló en entrevista a Lucho Borrego en Instagram. A raíz de los episodios de ansiedad que vivió por bastante tiempo, Sheynnis Palacios dirige un proyecto social llamado “Entiende tu mente”, que es un podcast, en el que habla y entrevista de diversos temas como depresión, suicidio y más. Algo que también hace desde la revista matutina “Al Día”. Sheynnis junto a su mamá fundó a inicios de 2018 su emprendimiento llamado Buñuelos La Guadalupana. Es más, en su cuenta de Instagram publicó un clip de su preparación junto a su abuela. “Si de algo debemos sentirnos orgullosos los nicaragüenses es de nuestra gastronomía. ¿Hay algo más nica que un nacatamal y nuestros buñuelos?”, escribió.

Ya queda menos para disfrutar en la gran pantalla de Wish: El poder de los deseos, la nueva película de animación de Disney dirigida por Fawn Veerasunthorn y Chris Buck con la que el estudio celebra su 100 aniversario. Protagonizada por Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), la trama de la cinta cuenta la historia de Asha, una joven de 17 años con mucho ingenio que un día pide un deseo tan potente que provoca la respuesta de una fuerza cósmica en forma de pequeña bola de energía ilimitada llamada Estrella.

En la historia, Asha hace una súplica apasionada al cielo, a la que responde una bola de energía llamada Star. Juntas trabajarán para salvar a su comunidad.

Caroilina Pickacho Fronteras de la Noticia - Warner Music Del rosa al amarillo fue la famosa película que Manuel Summers dirigió en 1963 y cuyo título recoge ahora Hombres G para recopilar todos sus éxitos en una caja de lujo. Hombres G celebran el 40 aniversario de su creación como grupo con la publicación de esta caja de edición limitada que se publicará el 24 de noviembre. Esta es sin duda alguna la recopilación definitiva de Hombres G, repasando todas sus etapas hasta la actualidad. Del rosa al amarillo contiene 39 canciones reunidas en cuatro vinilos y dos CDs. El audio ha sido remasterizado especialmente para la ocasión en los estudios Abbey Road de Londres por Alex Wharton. Dentro de las celebraciones del 40 aniversario, Hombres G han comenzado a publicar colaboraciones con artistas de generaciones recientes. En agosto se lanzó una versión de El ataque de las chicas cocodrilo grabada con Morat, una combinación artística que suma casi 5 millones de reproducciones en plataformas en menos de un mes. La canción original se incluyó en el segundo disco de Hombres G, La cagaste Burt Lancaster, (1986). Todo un clásico en el repertorio de la banda con una letra muy divertida con la que el grupo bromeada refiriéndose al acoso que sufrían por parte de los fans. La frase “Nunca hemos sido los guapos del barrio” sirvió de título a la biografía oficial del grupo publicada en el 2020. A lo largo de los próximos meses, Hombres G seguirán editando colaboraciones con artistas que han nacido y crecido durante esos 40 años de carrera. Todos estos duetos formarán parte de un álbum cuya fecha de publicación se espera para antes del verano del 2024. Hombres G están inmersos desde hace meses en la gira más grande de su carrera, con conciertos multitudinarios tanto en España como en Latinoamérica y EEUU, donde su enorme éxito los ha llevado a llenar estadios y locales de gran aforo. En esta gira repasan y celebran por todo lo alto las bondades de un repertorio imbatible que se ha convertido en la banda sonora de varias generaciones.
