We Can Each Be the Change! Hispanic Heritage Month 2023 was bigger and better than ever…with so many acknowledgements of the vast Hispanic contributions to our towns, states and our nation! Each of our issues during this time, carried information, stories and facts that we do hope that you, our readers found informative and uplifting! Now, several weeks after the celebrations have stopped, we are faced with so much upheaval around the world….even tonight we see another storm hitting the shores of Mexico and the damage it has caused...climate change has certainly reared its head so that we truly take notice. And the numerous outbursts of antisemitism have become more frequent and louder! I remember writing a piece for a school paper when President Kennedy was shot – how could a tragedy like this happen in our country…it amazed me that this tragedy found people of all colors and backgrounds embracing each other, they stood praying together and consoling a nation together…and my thoughts led me to write – “Is tragedy the only stigma which

can unify our nation and crush the racial barriers which are destroying the ideals and intrinsic beliefs basic to the American way of life?” Today we are still facing some of the same barriers from the ‘60s except solutions are now met with violence – a young boy stabbed to death because of his ethnicity, a judge shot in front of his home because someone didn’t like his judgment call, folks having disagreements and turning to a gun as opposed to actually taking time to ‘speak’ with each other, stores being robbed for no reason other than to cause destruction and think they are making a statement… And so many children being killed at such young ages due to violence in the city and in countries the US looks to help in many ways…. children should never be the targets in these radical actions of what I term deranged groups… children are not the enemy… they deserve the opportunity to grow up in peace…who knows how many future doctors, nurses, teachers, scientists, engineers, etc…were killed during the bombings between Israel and Gaza…

and the tremendous losses we faced with all those lost on 9/11! We are each born with a gift, a gift that may take us time to uncover, but a gift that aids us in contributing to making life better for everyone, yet what is it that stops so many from accepting people for just who they are? Why would we ever ban books? Parents have every right to decide what books their children should not read, or TV or movies they prefer they not watch, but others should not be subjected to such restrictions. If I don’t like chocolate ice cream, I don’t have the right to tell a shop owner he can’t serve chocolate ice cream to other customers, I just need to choose another ﬂavor! You get the idea. Tolerance, patience and communication…elements that are missing in many of these confrontations. And history, no matter how hurtful to read about, is important in helping us grow as a nation and not make the same mistakes as we move forward! How many accidents could be avoided if we all slowed down, got off our

phones and stayed aware of our surroundings. How many shootings could be stopped if we worked on actually talking with each other – not AT each other? How often do we remember to say ‘Thank You’ to those who deliver our paper, who bag our groceries, who drive our school buses? Or do we simply complain if something someone does for us makes us a few minutes late in our schedule? So, we all could change the current climate by embracing so many small gestures. I am a ﬁrm believer, people just want to feel seen and feel that they matter! That really is not too much to ask as we interact with each other. My favorite poet, Maya Angelou is often quoted –“People will not remember what you say or what you do… they will remember how you made them feel.” Let’s remember to make those we encounter in our lives feel that they have value and belong… each and every day! I know our Hispanic Communities can impact this positive change!

5 Crucial Retirement Planning Strategies for Hispanic Americans Hispanic Americans have a lot of financial concerns, and planning for the long term is just one of them. But by taking a few important steps today, they can put themselves on a path to a financially stronger retirement. BY IVÁN WATANABE

A 2021 Morningstar study, “A Closer Look Into the Finances of Hispanic American Households,” revealed that Hispanic households participate in employer-sponsored retirement plans at a much lower rate than white households, and a moderately lower rate than their Black counterparts. While there are many reasons for this, there are ﬁve simple, yet important, steps that Hispanics can take to help themselves prepare for a much stronger ﬁnancial future in retirement.

Step 1: Start saving as early as possible.

Don’t think you have to wait for “some time (or event) in the future.” Saving over a number of years lets you take advantage of compound interest. Put in the simplest terms, that means your money is reinvested over time to potentially makemoremoney. If you haven’t started saving for retirement yet, that’s okay. But start today—because your future won’t wait. You can start with just a small contribution amount now, and gradually increase it over time.

Step 2: Learn about debt—and the proper way to use it.

We’re taught in the Hispanic community that debt is always bad and to get rid of it before anything else. But there aregoodtypes of debt (such as the mortgage or home equity line of credit associated with your home), as opposed to bad types of debt (such as high-interest credit card balances). The interest rate on any outstanding loan you have is your “rate of return” when you overpay that debt (meaning you pay it back more quickly than you have to). If you have a loan at a low interest rate, consider not paying it off too soon, but rather investing the money you would have paid back instead. You may be able to earn a higher rate of return than you would by paying off a low-interest-rate mortgage, for example. In addition, if you pay off low-interest debt too.

Step 3: Discover the difference between a ‘traditional’ retirement plan and a Roth retirement plan.

With a traditional plan, you postpone paying federal income taxes on your contributions today but will have to pay taxes on your retirement savings when you withdraw it. A Roth plan is just the opposite—this post-savings opportunity lets you withdraw your retirement savings and investment

earnings tax-free down the road as long as you meet certain conditions—because you paid the taxes on your savings when you made your contributions. With today’s historically low-income tax rates (which many ﬁnancial experts predict will rise in the future), the Roth approach may be better, although everyone’s situation is different.

Step 4: Don’t let market risk scare you.

Those in the Hispanic community tend to be risk-averse. When it comes to investing, Hispanics typically aren’t willing to take on as much risk as other cultures, generally leading to lower account balances. Historically, however, stocks (considered to be “riskier” investments) have outperformed bonds and stable value (think “cash”) investments. By investing in stocks (also called “equities”), you can take advantage of their often higher returns—and, over the long run, your retirement savings will have the potential for better overall performance than if you put the money in “safer” investments. Even with the ups and downs of the stock market, money in retirement accounts is often invested for 20-30 years or more—so you should have enough time to ride out any stock market downturns. Having more equities in your

portfolio may provide you with more retirement income. With accounts that you’re not going to touch (like a retirement savings account), taking more risk can have its benefits, although past performance is never a guarantee of future returns. Step 5: Do the right protection planning. Don’t let childhood superstitions get in the way of putting the right forms of protection in place. If you work for an employer, learn all you can about your employee benefits package. In addition to its retirement plan offering, check out what kind of life insurance, disability, and health insurance you can enroll for. Making sure that you’re bridging the financial gap with individual disability and life insurance is key. If you get sick or injured, disability insurance can help to keep you from borrowing money from your retirement plan account, and life insurance can financially protect your family both now, and in the years to come. Even if you don’t have an employee benefit plan, you can purchase individual benefits that can provide you with the same valuable

Since the public unveiling of their plan for a new two-story restaurant and commercial development on lakeside property in late August, the four co-founders of Consume in Lake Zurich have been overwhelmed by positive feedback from the community. “Every day we get asked about it and it’s amazing because we’re so excited about it,” said co-owner Dhiren Patel. Consume’s proposal is to redevelop the property, commonly referred to as Block A on West Main Street, owned by the village into a new two-story, roughly 11,540-square-foot retail-restaurant building. The owners intend to move the business from its current location at 569 W. Route 22 to occupy the upper floor of the new building. They intend to set up a market space within one of the three ground-floor tenant spaces offering higher-end meats, cheeses, craft beer, liquor and wine. The second tenant space will be occupied by Swiss Mountain Coffee. An operator for the third tenant space has yet to be determined, according to the village website. Under the proposal, the top floor of the new building would provide the gastro pub’s patrons with lake views and one of three commercial tenant spaces on the first floor would house the Consume bottleshop. Plans still must be reviewed by the village’s planning and zoning committee and be approved by the village board. During its first seven years in business, Consume has won over a cadre of loyal fans and become part of the Lake Zurich community, the owners said. The origins of Consume date back to 2012 when cousins Uday Patel, Dhiren Patel and Ankur Patel were running a liquor store in Arlington Heights and first met Reed Bartuska. Bartuska arrived there in search of a beer that he couldn’t find anywhere else and over the years went from being a loyal customer to a friend. In 2015, the cousins sold the liquor store and when brainstorming what to do next Bartuska, who’d had years of hospitality experience including time as the general manager of the Vernon Hills WhirlyBall, suggested they open a bar together. “We were like, no, we don’t know anything about that, we’ll drink our profits away,” Uday Patel joked. “We were trying to venture out of retail but we kind of wanted to stay in retail. So we all collaborated and were like let’s open a bar with a shop.” They chose Lake Zurich as the place to start after demographic research showed there were a lot of Chicago residents who recently had moved within a 10-mile area of the village to start families. Uday Patel said they sought to create a vibe that was similar to the city. One important element was for guests to converse with each other so they have just one

Throughout the building process passersby would knock on the door and ask what was going on. Excitement for the new business built and though they hoped for a soft opening they were greeted by a line of customers down the block.

Over the years, a community has formed at Consume. Bartuska said when he comes in to bartend he often can’t make it more than a few feet without greeting a customer who now is a friend. “They have welcomed us wholeheartedly,” co-owner Reed Bartuska said of their local customers. “We have all created relationships and lives here and that’s why we love the idea of staying here for the next step.”

La miel, oro para tu cuerpo Carolina Pikacho Fronteras de la Notiica - EFESalud Existen registros prehistóricos que evidencia el consumo de este producto en pinturas rupestres del Mesolítico, o sea, unos 6,000 años a.C. Los antiguos, antes de conocer cómo las abejas producen la miel, tenían la creencia de que estos insectos volaban al paraíso para recogerla y traerla de vuelta a la Tierra. En infinidad de civilizaciones la abeja era sagrada y se creía que su producto tenía poderes protectores y milagrosos. Los egipcios consideraban la miel como un producto sagrado y la empleaban para pagar impuestos, además de utilizarla para alimentar y curar a sus hijos. La miel constituye uno de los alimentos más primitivos que el hombre aprovechó para nutrirse y permaneció como el único endulzante primario natural disponible hasta el Siglo XIX. La composición de la miel depende de diversos factores tales como la contribución de la planta, suelo, clima y condiciones ambientales, principalmente. Es un producto natural, saludable, fácilmente digestible y muy energético. Contiene carbohidratos, dentro de los que destacan la fructosa y glucosa, enzimas, aminoácidos, ácidos orgánicos, vitaminas (complejo B, vitamina C, y ocasionalmente A, D, E y K), minerales (los más frecuentes son calcio, cobre, hierro, magnesio, manganeso, zinc, fósforo y potasio), granos de polen, levaduras, almidón y una variedad considerable de antioxidantes (flavonoides y fenólicos). Las propiedades de las flores de las que se alimenta la abeja se transmiten a la miel, así

que cada una tiene beneficios y características que las distinguen, de ahí la importancia de conocer su procedencia. La polinización de las flores de azahar, bien conocidas por sus propiedades curativas relacionadas a las vías respiratorias, nos brinda una miel aromática y llena de vitamina C. Proporciona al cuerpo 40 por ciento menos calorías comparada con la misma cantidad de azúcar, y aporta más energía evitando el aumento de peso. Se considera adecuada para las personas que viven con diabetes y las personas con sobrepeso por su bajo nivel calórico. Endulza igual o un poco más que el azúcar normal y añade un sabor inigualable. Algunas mieles provienen de plantas silvestres con propiedades medicinales, así que además de endulzar estarás añadiendo propiedades extra a tus bebidas y alimentos. La aceitilla es una planta usada principalmente para afecciones nerviosas y cerebrales como depresión, histeria y neurastenia, así que si consumes miel de aceitilla te sentirás más feliz de lo usual. Tambien está compuesta por hidrógeno, carbono y oxígeno, elementos que elevan el nivel de energía en el cuerpo. La glucosa, fructosa y sacarosa son azúcares de fácil digestión, por lo que su consumo diario reduce el cansancio y ayuda a aumentar tu resistencia a la fatiga física y mental a la que estamos expuestos día a día, fortalece tu cuerpo contra el estrés y se recomienda para personas con anemia, convalecencia o gente mayor. Contiene antioxidantes que permiten una mejor circulación sanguínea y un mayor aporte de oxígeno a ciertas zonas corporales; por ejemplo, la miel de flores de aguacate está repleta de ellos, ya que entre más oscura sea la miel más antioxidante contiene,

lo cual beneﬁciará el funcionamiento de varias zonas corporales como el cerebro. Facilita la digestión de otros alimentos, estimula el proceso de contracción y relajación del tubo intestinal, abre el apetito y sirve para combatir la diarrea pues elimina bacterias. Igualmente, favorece la regulación del estómago por las considerables cantidades de potasio que contiene. Los mezquites son leguminosas utilizadas para curar afecciones de la garganta o del estómago, la miel de mezquite tiene un sabor delicado y tonos muy aromáticos, que al igual que estos pequeños árboles, posee propiedades medicinales útiles para tratar enfermedades del estómago. El consumo constante de miel con polen puede producir tolerancia o reducir los síntomas más comunes como estornudos, secreción nasal, lagrimeo, sensación de cansancio y otros síntomas de la alergia al polen. Debido al entorno montañoso, el clima, los cultivos, la resina de los árboles y las ﬂores, las mieles provenientes del bosque son ricas en propóleo y polen fresco. Además, suelen ser mieles con notas de madera y resina, su alto contenido de polen las vuelve ideales para controlar los síntomas de la alergia cuando la primavera se avecina. A través de todos los tiempos, la miel se ha empleado como remedio para la salud, de modo que consumir una o dos cucharadas diarias de miel te ayudará a combatir enfermedades gastrointestinales, infecciosas, alergias primaverales y la fatiga física y mental.

Su aguijón y posible picadura no resulta una idea apetecible, precisamente, pero la realidad es que su zumbido debería sonarnos a música celestial, y en este post te explicamos por qué motivos es así. En general, los insectos tienen un papel crucial en los ecosistemas naturales, pues forman parte de la biodiversidad, un concepto capital a la hora de garantizar que el mundo no deje de ser tal y como lo conocemos. Y, por lo tanto, que también nosotros dejemos de poder seguir en él. Suena dramático, pero así son las cosas. La pérdida de biodiversidad que sobrevendría si las abejas desaparecieran o, simplemente, se vieran minimizadas, signiﬁcaría una catástrofe ambiental. En términos de nutrición humana, la seguridad alimentaria sufriría una auténtica debacle. No en vano, el 35 por ciento de la producción mundial de alimentos depende directamente de ellas.

Como curiosidad, si su actividad se tuviera que realizar mecánicamente costaría la friolera de 153 mil millones de euros, según datos de Greenpeace. Es en ese momento en el que nuestros antepasados comienzan a contar con excedentes alimentarios que les permiten abrazar el sedentarismo y comenzar a crear las primeras sociedades complejas. Hoy el incremento de la población mundial y la escasez de agua dulce nos obligan a reinventar nuestras prácticas agrícolas. Una de las alternativas que comienzan a barajarse son los huertos flotantes: estructuras marinas que, por medio de desalación y energía solar, podrían producir la fruta y verdura de los humanos del siglo XXI. Aunque no están exentos de retos, tales como la corrosión o el oleaje, los huertos flotantes ofrecen numerosas ventajas. Las más importantes son el hecho de que no requieren agua dulce destinada al consumo humano, pueden instalarse en zonas costeras desérticas y utilizan energía renovable. Además, ofrecerán alimentos de proximidad con menor huella de carbono. El cultivo de algas marinas, ya sea dedicadas

a la producción de alimentos o biocombustibles, es ya una realidad. Sin embargo, los huertos flotantes aspiran a producir los mismos vegetales cultivados habitualmente en tierra firme. Aprovechar las superficies acuáticas es una opción que se está explorando también en el campo de los paneles solares flotantes. A efectos de este artículo, te mostraremos las visiones de diversos equipos de investigación y emprendedores de todo el mundo para cultivar sobre el agua. Bajo el nombre de Green Ocean (Océano verde), el sistema es semejante a una especie de invernadero con placas solares en el techo, que está diseñado en V para captar agua de lluvia. En lugar de optar por sistemas de desalinización como el caso anterior, los impulsores de esta plataforma de “agricultura offshore”, tal como la denominan, consiguen agua apta para el riego mezclando el agua de lluvia con pH ácido y agua de mar alcalina en la proporción necesaria. Por sofisticadas que sean las propuestas que hemos visto, los huertos flotantes no son enteramente novedosos. Hoy, empujados por los retos del cambio climático, los agricul-

tores de los deltas del sureste de Bangladesh están rescatando una técnica de cultivo practicada por sus antepasados. En su caso, utilizan balsas flotantes para cultivar frutas y verduras como pepinos, tomates, calabazas o incluso papayas. Las balsas son un ejemplo de sostenibilidad, ya que se tejen con las ramas de plantas invasivas. Esta alternativa comenzó a practicarse hace doscientos años para mitigar los efectos de la temporada de lluvia, que suele prolongarse durante cinco meses. Sin embargo, la subida del nivel del agua y las constantes inundaciones fruto del cambio climático dejan hasta diez meses bajo el agua las zonas de cultivo. En la actualidad hay más de seis mil agricultores de la zona que han optado por cultivar sobre el agua en una superficie equivalente a 157 hectáreas. Ya se trate de huertos flotantes o de otras alternativas como las proteínas sintéticas para astronautas, las próximas décadas exigirán soluciones imaginativas y, sobre todo, sostenibles para alimentar a una población creciente con unos recursos limitados en un escenario de cambio climático.

Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department celebrates Killers of the Flower Moon opening weekend, encourages responsible tourism OKLAHOMA CITY — Following the release of Killers of the Flower Moon on Oct. 20, the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department (OTRD) is encouraging responsible, respectful tourism and travel to the region where the movie was ﬁlmed. Supernatural suburbia Want to believe? Check our list of ghostly locations

BY MARNI PYKE For Reﬂejos For years, it was “a rite of passage” for Northwest suburbanites to check out supposedly haunted Cuba Road at night, actor/ ﬁlmmaker Jon Lee Brody explained. So it made perfect sense for the Palatine native, who now lives in Los Angeles, to borrow his mom’s Volvo when he was a teen and set out to prove himself one evening in 2001. As Brody and a carload of friends drove down the dark road near Barrington, a cluster of small green orbs appeared and surrounded the vehicle, he recalled. Some of his passengers shrieked, others “tried to play it cool. I’m just trying to make sure we don’t crash,” Brody recalled The lights were one thing. “But then we saw a car drive into the cemetery,” he said. They followed it to White Memorial Cemetery also on Cuba Road and “we saw there was no car.” “That was weird to me. To this day, I can’t explain what that was,” added Brody, co-host of the “That Was Pretty Scary” podcast with Freddie Prinze Jr. Some may scoff. But local folklore is full of strange, inexplicable things happening in suburbia. Phantom children on Munger Road in Bartlett. Mysterious noises at the Bull Valley police station. Historic Naperville

Spirits are high in Naperville from apparitions including deceased janitor “Yellow Boots” who supposedly lives in North Central College’s Pfeiffer Hall and lovers Charles Hillegas and Jessie Robateene who are said to roam the historic area. “Naperville’s just packed with them. It’s really an amazing thing, all the different ghosts we have,” said Kevin Franz, who leads The Ghost Tour of Naperville. He wrote a book about Hillegas, son of a prominent family, who fell in love with Robateene, an abused wife.They eloped in 1901 and lived together for over a decade until Robateene’s death, Franz recounted. A heartbroken Hillegas horriﬁed the town by digging up Robateene’s grave at Naperville Cemetery in hopes of reviving her with a potion. Franz said he learned about the romance from the deceased couple themselves.With help from a specialized recorder, “they were very talkative and told us the whole story,” he said.

Shoe Factory Road

The scenic route in Hoffman Estates once housed the historical Charles Lindbergh Schoolhouse, purported to be haunted although that could be pegged to teenagers who rendezvoused there. Also adding to the road’s mystique is an unsolved triple murder at a farmhouse where Earl Teets, his wife, Elizabeth, and their son Gary were found shot to death in 1979.

The Stickney Mansion

A former mansion built by spiritualists George and Sylvia Stickney, who held seances in the 1800s, now houses the Bull Valley

Volo Antique Mall

Civil War soldier Wallace Gale’s tombstone is in the Volo Cemetery, but he’s apparently active at the Volo Antique Mall. Some visitors claim to have seen a young boy looking down at them from the fourth floor and described floating perfume bottles and images of a soldier, officials with Lake County’s Dunn Museum said.

Haunted theaters

Both the Woodstock Opera House and the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan are known for supposed paranormal drama. In Woodstock, it’s “Elvira,” a performer who leapt from the opera’s tower when she didn’t get a part and now is said to sit in the audience. Meanwhile, the Genesee celebrates its spookiness, which includes disembodied barking, with an annual “Ghost Wauk.”

El artista que jugó con el título de su obra preguntó a sus fans: "¿quieren bailar conmigo otra vez?". El público está expectante por la presentación oﬁcial. Zamudio plays G (for girl) opposite Grant Kennedy Lewis who plays B in Majok’s play, which she said is not necessarily about immigration. “At its core, it’s watching young people coming of age,” she said. “It’s really special to watch these characters become each other’s home.” More than anything, Zamudio hopes audience members who’ve experienced what Majok’s characters experience see themselves on

stage. “And if you’ve never experienced this kind of situation, I hope that you take away more empathy for folks who deal with these challenges on a daily basis,” she said. “We’re seeing an inﬂux of immigrants and refugees,” she said, “and we need to ﬁnd a way to not divide ourselves and show up for one another.””Sanctuary City”

Every year, Waukegan actress Jocelyn Zamudio creates a vision board, which is collage of words and images meant to inspire and motivate. CIUDAD ENCANTADA, ESPAÑA Carolina Pikacho Fronteras de la Notiica - ciudadencantada.es Las formaciones rocosas de la Ciudad Encantada son formaciones de modelado kárstico, cuyo origen se remonta al periodo Cretácico, hace aproximadamente 90 millones de años. En el Cretácico, el mar de Thetis cubría gran parte de lo que actualmente es la Península Ibérica y la zona que hoy conforma la Ciudad Encantada formaba parte del fondo. Era una zona de aguas tranquilas donde existió una importante deposición de sales, principalmente carbonato cálcico, provenientes de los esqueletos de los animales de la zona y de la porción disuelta en el agua.

Al final del Cretácico, la orogenia alpina originó la elevación del terreno, pasando a formar parte de la tierra emergida parte de la superficie que antes eran fondo marino. Los bancos de carbonato cálcico convertidos en piedra caliza quedaron expuestos a los agentes atmosféricos, como la lluvia, los cambios de temperatura, y a los agentes biológicos, como la acción de los diferentes seres vivos, que fueron progresivamente erosionando la roca. La roca caliza es muy permeable y permite la infiltración del agua de lluvia. El agua, junto con la acción del anhídrido carbónico (CO2), disuelve la roca caliza aumentando aún más su porosidad y formando en su interior galerías, dando como resultado las formaciones de karst. Fue declarada Sitio Natural de Interés Nacional el 11 de junio de 1929. La acción del agua, el viento y el hielo ha hecho posible este fenómeno kárstico. La heterogeneidad de las rocas en cuanto a su morfología, composición química y grado de dureza es lo que ha permitido el desgaste desigual de las mismas por los elementos atmosféricos, dando como resultado una muestra sorprendente de arte pintoresco proveniente de la misma naturaleza. A las caprichosas y espectaculares formaciones existentes hay que sumar lapiaces, torcas y sumideros.
