Justlike“NoSaboKids”onTikTokhave beenpokingfunatthemselvesafterbeing toldtheyshouldspeakbetterSpanish,a littleoverhalf(54%)ofLatinoswhospeak verylittleornoSpanishhavebeenmadeto feelbadbecauseofit,accordingtoaPewResearchCenterreportpublishedWednesday.

What’smore,40%ofallLatinoadultssay they“often”or“extremelyoften”hearother HispanicsmakejokesaboutLatinoswho don’tspeakSpanishordon’tspeakitwell.

Thereport,however,pointsto“aninterestingtensionIthinkisstriking,”co-author MarkHugoLopez,Pew’sdirectorofraceand ethnicityresearch,toldNBCNews.

WhilealargemajorityofLatinos(85%) sayit’satleastsomewhatimportantforfuturegenerationsofHispanicstospeakSpanish,nearly80%sayit’snotnecessarytospeak SpanishinordertobeconsideredHispanic.

ThewidelysharedviewthatSpanishisnot synonymouswithLatinoidentitycouldbereflectingchangingdemographics,Lopezsaid, asthenumberofthird-generationLatinos (thosewhowerebornintheU.S.fromtwo U.S.-bornparents)growsandasalmost40% ofU.S.-bornLatinosmarrynon-Latinos.

Otherfindingsfromthesurvey: Three-quarters(75%)ofallU.S.Latinos saythey’reableto“carryonaconversationin

Spanishprettywellorverywell,”thereport said.

Butwhenitcomestothird-orhigher-generationLatinos,thenumberslook verydifferent:Onlyaboutone-third(34%) ofthemsaytheycanhaveaSpanish-languageconversationprettywellandonly14% candoso“verywell.”

MoreLatinosfromCentralAmerica (79%)thinkit’simportantthatfuturegener-

ationsareabletospeakSpanish,compared toothergroupslikeSouthAmericans(65%), Mexicans(64%),Cubans(63%)andPuerto Ricans(59%).

Inthefirsthalfof2021,theUnitedStates marketed1.11millionpoundsofromatomatoes.By2023,theamounthadincreased to1.28millionpounds,showinga16%increase,particularlyinMayandJune.

Ofthistomato,96.5%comesfromMexicoandFlorida,with86%and10.5%ofthe marketshare,respectively.Mexicomaintains itsproductionyear-round,meaningconsumerscanenjoythisfruitregardlessofthe season.

ofthestateofSinaloa,with22%ofthetotal volumeproduced,beingthemunicipalities ofCuliacanandNavolato,with4.87%and 3.99%ofthenationalproduction,respectively.

Ontheotherhand,Floridahasdecreased itsproductionbydroppingfrom222thousandpoundsin2021to207thousand poundsin2022,whichmeanta7%drop inthelastyear.Thefollowinggraphshows that,unlikeMexico,Floridacannotproduce tomatoesyear-round.

ForRivero,connectingwiththecommunitywasanimportantsteptowards embracinghisHispanicheritage.

“Whenwerealizedthereweremoreof usoutthere,thewholecommunitystarted gettingtogetherandIbeganfeelingmore appreciativeofwhereIcamefrom,”Rivero said.

AsacommunityhealthworkeratAdvocateShermanHospitalinElgin,Ill.,caringforthecommunityisakeypartofhis career.
