Co-founderoftheUnitedFarmWorkers Association,DoloresHuertahasspentmost ofherlifefightingforbetterworkingconditionsforfarmworkersandtherightsofthe downtrodden.

BorninDawson,NewMexico,Huerta’s fatherwasafarmworkerandminerwhoran forpoliticalofficeandwonaseatintheNew Mexicolegislaturein1938.

Afterherparentsdivorced,hermother movedtoStockton,California,whereateenageHuerta,outragedbytheracialandeconomicinjusticesshesawinCalifornia’sagriculturalCentralValley,laterfoundhercalling asanorganizerwhileservingintheleadershipoftheStocktonCommunityServiceOrganization,accordingtoherfoundation.

HuertahasworkedtoelectseveralcandidatesincludingPresidentBillClintonand CaliforniaGov.JerryBrown.She’salsocreditedwithcoiningtheslogan“Sísepuede”— Spanishfor“Yes,wecan”—themantraof formerPresidentBarakObama’s2008presidentialcampaign.Obamaacknowledged Huertaasthesourceofthephrasewhenhe awardedherthePresidentialMedalofFreedomin2012

Herfoundation,theDoloresHuerta Foundation,advocatesforwomen,children andthoselivinginimpoverishedcommunities.Shecontinuestoteachimmigrants aboutthelawsoragenciesthatcanprotect themaswellasbenefitsthattheyareentitledto.Shetravelsthecountryinsupportof equalityandcivilrights.

“TheQueenofSalsa”wasadynamic performerineverysense.Withherpowerfulvoiceandflamboyantstageshows,Cruz helpedbringsalsamusictoabroadaudience.

Inthe1950s,Cruzbecamefamouswith thelegendaryAfro-CubangroupLaSonoraMatancera.SheleftCubaafterthe1959 revolutionandoftensaidshewouldloveto return—whenCastronolongerwasinpower.Intheend,CastrooutlivedCruz,accordingtoTheAssociatedPress.Shediedfroma braintumorin2003.

Cruzrecordedmorethan70albumsover sixdecadesandhadmorethanadozenGrammynominations.Shewonbestsalsaalbumfor “LaNegraTieneTumbao”atlastyear’sLatin

In1987,shewashonoredwithastaron Hollywood’sWalkofFame,andseveralyears later,thecityofMiamigaveCalleOcho,the mainstreetofitsCubancommunity,the honorarynameofCeliaCruzWay.

CruzalsoreceivedaLifetimeAchievementAwardfromtheSmithsonianInstitutionandin1994,U.S.PresidentBillClinton honoredherwithanawardfromtheNationalEndowmentfortheArts.

CesarChavez:AmericanActivist

ChavezisoneofthemostrecognizedLatinoactivistsinthecountry.Heusedanon-violentapproachtobringattentiontotheplight offarmworkers.Heco-foundedtheNational FarmWorkersAssociationin1962,whichlaterbecameUnitedFarmWorkers.

Asachild,Chavezandhisfamilywere migrantfarmworkerswhoworkedlong hoursunderthesun.Chavezledmarches, boycottsandwentonseveralhungerstrikes todemandfairwagesandhumaneworking conditions.Heservedasaunionleaderand dedicatedhislifetoprotectingandimprovingthelivesoffarmworkers.

Mostnotably,ChavezwasoneoftheorganizersforanationalboycottofCalifornia’s grapesduetotheunlivablewagesandpoor workingconditionsthatfarmworkerswere forcedtoendure.In1970,afterfiveyearsof thegrapestrike,farmworkerswonathefirst unioncontractpromisingbetterpayand benefits.

Afewyearsafterthestrike,California lawmakerspassedtheCaliforniaAgriculturalLaborRelationsAct,whichpromised collectivebargainingpowerforfarmworkers acrossthestate.

Chavezdiedin1993.In2014,ObamaannouncedMarch31,CesarChavez’sbirthday,

wouldberecognizedasafederalcommemorativeholiday.

Chavezwasknowntoprotestbyfasting. In1988,hewentona36-daywater-onlyfast toprotesttheuseofagriculturalpesticides, breakingitonAug.22withapieceofbread fromEthelKennedy,thewidowofRobertF. Kennedy,theLosAngelesTimesreportedat thetime.Rev.JesseJacksontookupwhere Chavezleftoff,fastingonwaterforthree daysbeforepassingonthefasttocelebrities andotherprominentleaders.

“DuringthepastfewyearsIhavebeen studyingtheplagueofpesticidesonourland andourfood,”Chavezsaid.«Theevilisfar greaterthanevenIhadthoughtittobe,it threatenstochokeoutthelifeofourpeople andalsothelifesystemthatsupportsusall. Thissolutiontothisdeadlycrisiswillnotbe foundinthearroganceofthepowerful,butin solidaritywiththeweakandhelpless.Ipray toGodthatthisfastwillbeapreparationfora multitudeofsimpledeedsforjustice.»

GloriaEstefanandtheMiamiSound Machine:Musicians

Formedin1975bytheCuban-bornmusicianEmilioEstefanJr.,thegroupwasoriginallycalledTheMiamiLatinBoysbefore changingittotheMiamiSoundMachinein 1977afteranotherCubanimmigrant,Gloria Fajardo,joinedthegroupasvocalist.Estefan andFajardomarriedin1978.

In1985,theMiamiSoundMachineex-

plodedontothepopularmusicscenewiththe Latincrossoverhit“Conga,”introducingfor thefirsttimethesoundsoftheAfro-Cuban drumbeattoanEnglish-speakingaudience.

“Conga”reachedNo.10ontheBillboard Hot100andthealbum,«PrimitiveLove,» launchedtwomoretop10hits.Onebyone, thehitspiledup.TheEstefansbeganproducingotherCuban-Americanactsandservedas thegodparentsofanewgenreofmusic.

GloriaEstefanbrokebarriersbysuccessfullyproducingalbumsinbothSpanishand English.EstefanhaswonseveralGrammy andLatinGrammyAwards,sheistherecipientoftheAmericanMusicAwardfor LifetimeAchievementandthe1993NationalMusicFoundation’sHumanitarianofthe Yearaward,amongotheraccolades.

Meanwhile,EmilioEstefanbuiltaLatin musicempire,producingalbumsforLatin music’sbiggestartistsincludingMarcAnthony,JenniferLopezandShakira,andgarnering18Grammyawardsalongtheway.

Fromdancingtoresearchingbutterflies, scientistsandartistsdisplayedthewideinfluenceofLatinxculturetomarkHispanic HeritageMonthatthe11thannualVivaMuseum,hostedbytheFloridaMuseumand GainesvilleLatinoFilmFestival.

TheVivaMuseumeventhasbeencelebratingHispanicHeritageMonthsince2012 afterthemuseumconcludeditwasaperfect waytobringacommunitytogether.

“Itisveryempowering,”saidemployeeAlbertoLopez.Eventslikethesealsoofferafurtherchancetoexaminethemassiveimpact LatinasandLatinoshavehadonAmerican culture.

TheUFsalsaclubalsomadeanappearance.XenothonStelnicki,46,theheadinstructorofcasinodancingandsomeonewho hasbeeninvolvedwiththesalsaclubatUF,expressedhisexcitementintheirparticipation.

“It’sbeenaprettygreatturnoutwe’vehad somegreatparticipationinhereandeveryoneseemstobehavingajollytime,”Stelnicki stated.

JanellePena,thepublicprogramscoordinatoratVivaMuseum,saidthemaingoal fortheeventistoshowchildren,specifically thosefromtheLatinxcommunity,howthey canachieveanythingtheywant.

“Wewantkidstoseethattherearepeople workingwithbutterflies,amphibians,and birdsandthatthisisnotsomethingthatis farawayfromreality,anditissomethingthat theycanachieve.Italsoemphasizestheimportanceofscienceandlearningwhilehavingfun,”Penasaid.

Asidefromdanceandethnicfood,scientistsarealsoshowcasingtheiranimal researchdoneindifferentpartsofLatin America.AlbertoLopez,theyouthoutreach coordinatorattheVivaMuseum,explained thestretchofLatindiversityatthisevent.

“WehavescientistsherefromSouth America,theCaribbean,PuertoRicoand manyotherplacesintheLatinAmericanregion,”Lopezexplained.

UniversityofFloridastudentOlivia Maule,20,abiologymajorfromMiami, showcasedherwork,specializinginbutterfly researchatthemuseumwiththeMcGuire Center.

“Iamlookingathowthecurrentriseof theAndeshasresultedinthesplitofalot ofbutterflyspeciessowhatIbroughttothe tabletodaywasalotofbutterflyspeciesthat IwasabletoseeinEcuadorthissummer,” Maulesaid.

Mauleemphasizedthatitisalwaysgreat havingayoungeraudienceaskquestionsbecauseshefindsitveryenjoyablebeingableto shareherknowledgewithfuturescientists.

“It’sreallynicetogetalotofquestions,especiallyfromkidswhoarenaturallyverycurious,andIreallyenjoyhearingthemaskquestionsaboutbutterfliesorthingsIhavedone.”

Accordingtothe2020U.S.CensusBureau,therearemorethan60millionLatinos livingintheUnitedStates.It’sthelargest ethnicminoritygroupmakingupalmost 20%oftheentirepopulation.InAlachua County,Hispanicsmakeup10%ofthepopulation,andnearly14%inMarion. Regardlessoftheprofessionondisplay, thecolors,stories,foodandenergybehind HispanicHeritageMonthfeelslikereason enoughtocelebrate.
