Neverleavechildrenorpetsinyourvehicle.Theinsidetemperatureofthecarcan quicklyreach120degrees.

Stayhydratedbydrinkingplentyoffluids. Avoiddrinkswithcaffeineoralcohol.

Checkonfamily,friendsandneighbors whodonothaveairconditioning,whospend muchoftheirtimealoneorwhoaremore likelytobeaffectedbytheheat.

Ifyoudon’thaveairconditioning,seek relieffromtheheatduringthewarmestpart ofthedayinplaceslikeschools,libraries,theaters,malls,etc.

Avoidextremetemperaturechanges.

Excessiveheatcanleadtosunburn,heat cramps,heatexhaustionandheatstroke.If someoneisexperiencingheatcrampsinthe legsorabdomen,getthemtoacoolerplace, havethemrest,lightlystretchtheaffected muscle,andreplenishtheirfluidswithahalf aglass(about4ounces)ofcoolwaterevery 15minutes.

HeatExhaustion

Ifsomeoneisexhibitingsignsofheatexhaustion(cool,moist,paleorflushedskin, heavysweating,headache,nausea,dizziness, weaknessandexhaustion),movethemtoa coolerplace,removeorloosentightclothing andspraythepersonwithwaterorapply cool,wetclothsortowelstotheskin.Fan theperson.Iftheyareconscious,givesmall amountsofcoolwatertodrink.Makesure thepersondrinksslowly.Watchforchangesincondition.Ifthepersonrefuseswater, vomitsorbeginstoloseconsciousness,call 911.

HeatStroke

Heatstrokeusuallyoccursbyignoringthe signalsofheatexhaustion.Heatstrokedevelopswhenthebodysystemsareoverwhelmed byheatandbegintostopfunctioning.Signs includehot,redskinwhichmaybedryor moist;changesinconsciousness;vomiting andhighbodytemperature.Call911immediatelyifsomeoneshowssignsofheatstroke. Movethepersontoacoolerplace.Quickly

cooltheperson’sbodybyimmersingthemup totheirneckincoldwaterifpossible.Otherwise,douseorspraythepersonwithcoldwater,orcoverthepersonwithcold,wettowels orbagsofice.

RiskFactors

Heatistheleadingweather-relatedkillerintheU.S.Morethan600peopleinthis countrydieeveryyearfromheat-relatedillnesses,accordingtotheCentersforDisease ControlandPrevention(CDC).

Somepeoplearemoreatriskofdevelopingaheat-relatedillness,includingadults over65,thosewithchronicmedicalconditions,peoplewhoworkoutside,infants andchildren,andathletes.Somemaytake medicationsthatmaketheeffectsofextreme heatworse.Peoplewithheartdisease,poor bloodcirculation,obesityandmentalillness arealsoatriskforgettingsickifthetemperaturesclimb.
