Asa first-generation studentwhose familyimmigratedfromEl Salvador,SusanaRivera-Mills believesa Spanishlanguagesession atorientation wouldhave madeaworld ofdifference.

“Isawthe parentswith theirstudents listeningto thisinformation,andwhat Ithoughtabout waswhatifmyparentshadthatopportunity,”saidRivera-Mills,whotookoveras AuroraUniversity’s14thpresidentonJune 1.“Myparentsdidn’tgotocollege....Iwas havingthisexperiencethatmyparents couldnotfullyunderstand.”

Rivera-Mills,a52,hasspentmuchof herfirstfewweeksonthejobacquainting herselfwiththestaffandcommunitymembersandfindinginspirationatstudentorientationsessions.

“Itwasverymovingformetoconnectat orientationandhaveLatinoparentscome uptome,introducethemselvesandseea sighofreliefinknowingthattheyaresendingtheirstudenttoauniversitythatisled bysomeonewhounderstands,”shesaid.

Rivera-Millswasselectedafterasixmonthnationalsearchthatincludeda committeemadeupoftrustees,alumni, faculty,staffmembersandstudents.She replacesBeckySherrick,theuniversity’s firstfemalepresident,whosteppeddown after22yearsatthehelmandwasnamed interimpresidentinJuneatSt.XavierUniversityinChicago.

AnativeofElSalvador,Rivera-Mills cametotheUnitedStatesatage12after herfamilyfledacivilwar.Shesaysitwas asimplebutprofoundwordchoiceina conversationwithahighschoolteacher

thathelpedherrealizeanythingispossible. Theteachersaid“whenyougotocollege” insteadof“ifyougotocollege.”

Shestartedhercareerinhighereducation30yearsagoandmostrecentlyserved asprovostforfiveyearsatBallStateUniversity.Shealsoservedasviceprovostofacademicprogramsandlearninginnovation, deanofundergraduatestudies,executive associatedeanoftheliberalartscollege anddepartmentchairofmodernlanguagesatOregonStateUniversityfrom2007to 2018.Beforethat,sheservedasafaculty memberatNorthernArizonaUniversity for13years.

Aspresident,Rivera-MillsheadsauniversitynationallyrecognizedasaHispanic-servinginstitution.Accordingtothe university’swebsite,40%ofitsstudentsare Latino.

Rivera-Millssaidtheprivateuniversity’scommitmenttoservingabroadrange ofstudentsandkeepingtuitionwithin reachforstudentsdrewhertoAurora.“It’s thatpublicmissionthatisveryimportant tome,”shesaid.“Itembodiesaccesstoaffordableeducationandservesabroadand diversepopulationofstudents.”

Inadditiontoethnicdiversity,she pointedtoAuroraUniversity’scommitmenttostudentswithdifferentneeds.UnderSherrick’stenure,AuroraU.became thefirstinstitutioninthecountrytohave aprogramandresidencehallforstudents withautism.

“Iwanttobeabletogrowthatprogram andintegrateitintoourcurriculum,”she said.Shealsohopestoexpandtheuniversity’sinternshipprogramtoprovideopportunitiestostudentssooner.

“Iwantthem(students)tostartthinkingaboutthatondayonesotheycanbecomeprofessionalsbeforetheygraduate,” shesaid.

Asafirst-generationcollegestudent, Rivera-Millsalsosaidsheiscommitted toremovingobstaclesthatkeepstudents frompursuingacollegeeducation.

“Ihavelearnedalotabouttheunintendedobstaclesthatmanycollegeshave inplace,”saidRivera-Mills,whosecurrent researchfocusesonissuesthataffecthighereducation.“Ihavededicatedmycareer toremovingasmanyofthoseobstaclesasI can.”AsshejumpsintocampuslifeatAuroraUniversity,Rivera-Millsencouraged studentstodothesame.

“Ifthereisonething...Iwouldencouragethemtoconnectwithothers,”shesaid. “Wereallycan’tdolifealoneanddoitwell. Don’tbeafraidtoleaninandexplore....It’s amazingwherethatwilltakeyou.”

Sheandherhusband,SeanMills,will liveinahomeoncampuswiththeirdog, Scout.Theirson,Daniel,willfinishhisdegreeatBallStateUniversity.

ElginCommunityCollege’snewesthealth professionprogram,RespiratoryCare,focusesonhelpingpeoplebreatheeasier.

Startinginthefallof2024,thenewprogramwilltrainstudentsasrespiratorytherapistsandpreparethemtoearnanAssociate ofAppliedSciencedegree.

“Respiratorytherapistshelppatientsfrom theirfirstbreathoflifeasnewbornstotheir lastbreathastheyage,”saidWendyMiller, EdD,deanofhealthprofessions,math,science,andengineering.“Thesehighlyskilled healthcareprofessionalsworkinavarietyof

settings,includinghospitals,cardiopulmonaryrehabilitationcenters,nursinghomes, homehealthagencies,andontransport teams.”

StudentswhocompleteECC’s72-credit hourprogramwillqualifytotaketheRegisteredRespiratoryTherapist(RRT)credentialingexamandbecomeboard-certifiedby theNationalBoardforRespiratoryCare.

AccordingtotheBureauofLaborStatistics,thedemandforrespiratorytherapists andrespiratorycarepractitionersisexpected toincreaseduetoanagingpopulationand

therealitiesofrespiratoryillnesses.BLS’s10yearprojectedgrowthof14%ismuchhigher thantheaverageforalloccupations.
