LE TTE R F RO M TH E PR E SI DE NT

I am thrilled for this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude for your extraordinary generosity. The 20222023 Impact Report is a testament to the incredible achievements made possible by your unwavering support and commitment to Trinity Western University’s mission. I hope this report helps you to see the work and impact of our partnership in being a Christ-centred, student-focused University. Your prayers, encouragement, and generosity continue to play a tremendous role in our progression towards our new vision: “Every graduate is equipped to think truthfully, act justly, and live faithfully for the good of the world and the glory of God.” With a clear, compelling, and inspiring vision in place, we set about the task of developing a new strategic plan. “Every Graduate Equipped: 2030” answers a burning question: how can Trinity Western University leverage its unique Christian mission and vision and the remarkable gifts of our staff, faculty, parents, alumni, and friends of the University to have the greatest impact possible on the more than 6,000 students attending our University? And how can we guide, encourage, support, and inspire each of these students to offer their gifts, time, and abilities to the work of learning how to participate in God’s renewal of the world?

Our new vision and “Every Graduate Equipped: 2030” Strategic Plan represent our dedication to faith seeking understanding: to connect the truth of God’s revelation to all of life, to advance the integration of faith and learning, to raise support for two endowed chairs in Biblical studies and Christian theology, and to establish a Centre for Excellence in Faith, Learning, and Life. While equipping all students with the ability to successfully learn and contribute to a diverse and rapidly changing world is one thing, doing all this and helping students connect their gifts, ability, potential, purpose and calling to the promise and hope of the gospel is another thing entirely—it's a divine calling. We hope that this Impact Report brings you tremendous encouragement and hope. As I look back on all that God has accomplished through Trinity Western University this past year, I am so very thankful: none of this would have been possible without your partnership. On behalf of the entire University community, I extend our deepest thanks and appreciation for your continued support. With heartfelt appreciation,

Mark Husbands President & Vice Chancellor Trinity Western University

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

Giving Tuesday & Day of Giving Once again, we express our profound gratitude for the invaluable contributions of our generous donor community. Our annual Giving Tuesday campaign yielded an impressive sum of $545,333. Partnered with the second annual Day of Giving campaign, which saw another $157,240 raised, a grand total of $702,572 was dedicated to the provision of student scholarships. To prepare for these events, students were invited to pen notes of encouragement to show their appreciation towards donors. One student wrote the simple yet genuine message, “Thank you for reminding me why I learn.” Several of our donors were able to join us by coming out to our Langley campus to participate in the Day of Giving event. Attending chapel alongside students provided an opportunity for donors to experience in person the community that they have impacted through their investment and prayerful support. With a student body now exceeding 6,000, Trinity Western University prides itself on preparing graduates who emerge equipped to assume impactful roles and effect positive change

on a global scale while marching under the banner of Christ. We are delighted to witness the support and camaraderie of numerous friends and benefactors who stand alongside us as we diligently pursue our vision to equip every graduate for life. Student scholarships play a vital role in fostering an environment conducive to academic excellence and personal growth for many of our TWU students. Largely thanks to our 27,000 donors spread across 62 countries, we are proud to share that approximately 97% of our undergraduate students receive financial aid. Your investment in the lives of students help them to make progress on their educational journeys, clarify their callings, embrace faith in Christ, and connect their gifts to God's work of renewal in the world. One testimonial comes from Thidarat Phoosit, a recent TWU graduate, whose educational experience was enriched through the goodwill of scholarship aid. Reflecting upon the immeasurable worth of a TWU education, she states, “The most pivotal lesson I learned is that my education is not for my benefit; rather, it is so that I would have the competency to serve others well.”

A STUDENT STORY

Gratefulness Rewarded Being a Christ-centred, global university, we uphold a steadfast commitment to ensure that every student is given the chance to encounter the everlasting blessing of life through the person and mission of Christ. We are in awe of the unwavering support from our TWU community in nurturing the growth of faithful Christian leaders. Such dedication plays a crucial role in empowering the next generation as they embark on their diverse career paths and life journeys, equipped with their education, faith, and strong convictions. Gabriella Collins represents one of these leaders. As a recent graduate of Trinity Western University’s Nursing program, Gabriella (‘23) first demonstrated a passion for her field when she discovered her heart for health equity and social justice. Knowing TWU’s Nursing program to not just equip future nurses for a career but also to impart competence and compassion, her choice to study here was made easy. During her time at Trinity Western, Gabriella experienced a whole-person and personalized approach to both her academic learning and development. “In the School of Nursing, our Christian professors have guided us in integrating our faith with our nursing practice,” says Gabriella. She brings her point home by stating, “I know that

when I graduate, I’ll be fully equipped as I step out of the lab and into clinical practice.” Additionally, Gabriella speaks with deep gratitude towards TWU donors who have supported her education during her time here. Because of the efforts and contributions of the University’s supporters, the School of Nursing has been able to utilize new state-of-the-art technology to mirror real-life clinical experiences with greater detail. Furthermore, students can even receive significant funding for their education with scholarships and awards provided to them by donors. However, the generosity does not stop there. So many of TWU’s programs and students like Gabriella have benefitted significantly from the meaningful contributions of the University’s faithful supporters. For many, it is the difference of even being able to choose TWU over other schools, and for that reason, we are incredibly grateful. Thank you to all of you who help make student experiences like Gabriella’s an impactful one.

PARENT ALUMNI

Giving Back Scott Tigchelaar (‘93), president of Senoia Enterprises in Senoia, Georgia, is a TWU alumnus. Married to Adrienne (‘92), whom he also met at his alma mater, they are parents to two very recent TWU graduates. For Scott, a Christian education was essential as he embarked on his academic journey. He desired a smaller, more personal on-campus experience that would uphold his biblical worldview while providing a quality liberal arts education. This commitment to maintaining a strong Christian foundation was instilled in him through his upbringing in the church. Having established a memorable legacy at TWU, Scott recounts, “The experience that Adrienne and I both had at TWU made us want to share that with our kids—even more so now with the way public universities are moving.” Scott

goes on to emphasize the value of a good friend group and how this can impact the quality and direction of your future. This made both his decision to study at TWU and to send his kids to TWU very clear. “Being able to witness the opportunities and the friendships that TWU has presented both us and our kids—it’s clear that God is working throughout.” As a donor to Trinity Western, Scott has a very clear reasoning for his continued philanthropic involvement. “It’s kind of like that expression, ‘Give a man a fish—feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish—feed him for a lifetime.’ You could give to something finite, but if you help shape a Christian worldview in someone—if you help create Christian leaders in business, medicine, education and all the different facets, that pays dividends their entire lives, and that is why we give to TWU.”

Being able to witness the opportunities and the friendships that TWU has presented both us and our kids—it’s clear that God is working throughout. In commenting on the future of Christian higher education and TWU’s importance on the global stage, Scott believes that TWU is “on the frontlines of the spiritual battle that’s being waged in society today.”

To Scott, this is all the more reason to support TWU in helping to shape thousands of Christian leaders. Viewing this from the perspective of spiritual impact and influence, Scott believes that helping fund the education of future Christ-centred, compassionate leaders “is very compelling.”

DONOR CONTRIBUTION

C. S. Lewis & Friends Collections In 2022, TWU’s Norma Marion Alloway library unveiled a beautiful new reading room, showcasing an extraordinary exhibit of rare and cherished works that was generously donated by the Kouwenberg family in 2019. The magnificent gift of the Dr. Hans and Colleen Kouwenberg C. S. Lewis and Friends Collections has been displayed in the new reading room in beautiful custom-built cabinetry and casings. Boasting over 900 items, including rare copies of books by Lewis and other Inklings authors, these collections of audio-visual materials, journals, and books are envisioned as a teaching resource to support scholarship and enrich the broader Christian community. We recognize the timeless impact that the teachings for both children and adults contained within these collections have on a Christian institution such as Trinity Western. We are deeply grateful to the Kouwenberg family for their friendship to the University and ongoing support of Christian higher education.

There are few things more satisfying than discovering with others, in the community of the classroom, how writers like C. S. Lewis and other Inklings-related authors speak so very powerfully into the deep needs of our culture and, indeed, into our own personal journeys. These authors inspire us to live well, with courage and hope, as we travel to our True Country. DR. MONIKA B. HILDER,

Professor of English & cofounder of the Inklings Institute of Canada

Equipped Graduates “Every Graduate Equipped” is our promise to our students and to you, and as the final chapter closes on another academic year, we at the University feel confident that the vision we have outlined for the future of our graduates unequivocally aligns with our stance to participate in God’s renewal of the world.

It’s really easy to find work that will make you feel important, but it’s harder to find work that corresponds with the person that you want to become and with the place that the Lord is calling you to go. MONICA RAWLEK-ELIZONDO (‘21)

As we watch each graduating class prepare to make its mark on the world, we recognize the impact of your generosity. This is exciting, and it is time that will reveal the true value of the already familiar words of this vision.

University to new heights of excellence and faith. By working together alongside our very generous donors, we can present the world with a captivating vision of human flourishing.

Trinity Western University is growing exponentially. Positioned as a globally engaged institution, particularly following the events of the pandemic, we have seen impressive growth within many of our graduate degree programs. This is evidenced by this spring’s graduation ceremony in which the University saw its largest class to date of more than 1,000 students walk the stage. TWU’s graduation ceremony holds great significance as we honour the accomplishments of our graduates in a manner that reflects our commitment to Christ.

This collaborative effort has provided us with a beautiful perspective from students who have witnessed and experienced the direct fruits of the vision statement. Recent graduate, Monica Rawlek-Elizondo (‘21), an honours philosophy major, shares, “It’s really easy to find work that will make you feel important, but it’s harder to find work that corresponds with the person that you want to become and with the place that the Lord is calling you to go.” In a few words, Monica articulates deep understanding of what it means to think truthfully, act justly, and live faithfully for the good of the world and the glory of God.

To ensure that every one of our students receives an exceptional learning experience regardless of their location, we must foster an innovative culture and mindset. Equipping every graduate requires the dedication and talent of students, godly faculty, staff, and University leadership, engaged and active alumni, and a mission-driven Board of Governors working together to raise Trinity Western

We celebrate how you, our donors, have joined us in our commitment to see every graduate equipped as we prepare for even more transformative years ahead.

When a TWU education impacts alumni so much that they later become donors to the University, it generates a beautiful cycle of gratitude and value. Students are rewarded as they get equipped for life, society receives godly Christian leaders with compassionate hearts, the University deepens its impact, and the donors themselves witness the wave of blessings that began with their own an act of generosity. Marcus and Yvonne New are TWU graduates who serve generously within our TWU donor community and exemplify the continuing bond the University makes with its alumni.

STUDENT DONOR Reflecting on his first year at Trinity Western, Elijah Nikiforuk, founder and national president of the Canadian Young Leaders Coalition (CYLC), describes his organization’s efforts to help young Ukrainians and how it relates to the vision of TWU. Trinity Western University has been blessed with a remarkable gift from Elijah and the CYLC. Through their initiative, CURE (Canadian-Ukrainian Relief Effort), the CYLC has established a $20,000 scholarship fund to support deserving Ukrainian students throughout their four-year journey at TWU. This extraordinary act of generosity exemplifies the power of education and the spirit of community. During his final year of high school, when he started to really explore faith, Elijah began to consider TWU for university. Seeking to grow more, he viewed Trinity Western’s wholeperson approach to education as the logical next step in his journey. Once at TWU as a political studies major and recipient of TWU’s Provost and Founders’ scholarships, Elijah discovered a profound sense of belonging. He shares, “TWU prioritizes relationships when it comes to learning. It was here that I really found belonging—friends that I consider to be brothers and sisters.” His message to Ukrainian students is, “The CYLC sees education as an excellent way to combat what we know as survivor’s guilt—something that Ukrainian students are struggling with. We want CURE to be a reminder to Ukrainian students that even while you are here, you are contributing to the war effort in your own way by receiving a world-class education. After graduating, you are going to be better equipped to help rebuild a strong and resilient Ukrainian state. Importantly, we want CURE to be an example—a symbol to all young Canadians—that everyone has the capacity to help others regardless of their age.” When asked about the future of the CYLC beyond its CURE initiative, Elijah responds, “Our hope is that the war won’t be going on by then. The intent for CURE is not to be a

As the CYLC continues to make a positive impact from its headquarters at the TD Bank Tower in downtown Toronto, their collaboration with Trinity Western and the establishment of the CURE scholarship showcases the transformative power of education. This partnership equips Ukrainian students while also fostering a spirit of unity and support within our TWU community. The gift from the CYLC serves as a beacon of hope, illustrating the potential for young people to make a difference, and empowering them to shape a brighter future.

I’m not just there as my own self but in the image of Christ. DAVID MUTABAZI (3RD YEAR)

STUDENT-ATHLETE REFLECTION

A Kingdom Approach David Mutabazi, a talented TWU Spartans basketball player, expresses deep gratitude for the financial support he receives through student scholarships. As his journey throughout TWU continues, David finds tremendous inspiration from the University community. Engaging in conversations about faith in Christ and the future enables him to seamlessly integrate his spiritual beliefs with his passion for sports. While David initially found this integration of faith with sport challenging, he now embraces the understanding that as a competitive athlete he can glorify God by demonstrating commitment to Christ

and his kingdom. David explains, “I’m not just there as my own self but in the image of Christ.” David shares a special thank-you, recognizing that he might not have had the opportunity to consider attending a school like TWU were it not for the hearts of donors such as yourselves. When the University is provided funds to bless its students with, recipients like David receive this humbly and with deep gratitude. It’s stories like these that we look forward to sharing with you.
