Equipped for Life

WHO WE ARE

OUR VISION

Every graduate is equipped to think truthfully, act justly, and live faithfully for the good of the world and the glory of God.

In 1962, an extraordinary dream began—to establish a distinctly Christian university in Canada, a place for equipping students to set the foundation for a full and meaningful life.

Trinity Western has since grown to become Canada’s largest faith-based university and one of North America’s premier global Christian universities, offering a full range of undergraduate and graduate degrees, including professional schools in business, education, human kinetics, nursing, and clinical psychology.

Every year, more than 6,000 students from over 80 countries experience an academically excellent liberal arts and sciences education while being formed within a Christ-centred, student-focused, and globally engaged community.

At Trinity Western, students are equipped to actively participate in God’s renewal of the world, and we look forward to welcoming you to join us in this exciting vision for the future—your future.

My studies at TWU have profoundly impacted me both intellectually and spiritually. I felt supported and encouraged by my professors in all the courses I took. Because of my math degree at TWU, I am able to approach problems and find solutions with a deeper critical lens and a greater appreciation for how Christianity and science interact.

We have the programs, professors, and technology to help you achieve your goals and fuel your passion. As a science student, you’ll develop strong critical thinking and practical skill while learning about God’s creation. You can also study with confidence knowing that a high percentage of our graduates who apply to medical school get accepted.

Q&A with a recent TWU graduate

ALUMNI FEATURE

Johan Bouwer was born in South Africa and moved to Canada with his family as a child. As a young adult, he recognized that God was drawing him into health care, and he felt confirmed on the calling through his family’s rich history in the field and his own love for serving people in a practical way. We sat down with Johan and asked him a few questions as he was nearing the end of his BSN program earlier this year.

Q: Why did you choose to pursue nursing and why at TWU?

A: I have always felt that God has gifted me with helping people in vulnerable circumstances. I am a follower of Jesus, and I really want to incorporate that into everything I do. I thought Trinity Western was the place that could equip me to live out my faith practically in serving people.

I love relationships—that’s how I learn. At TWU, I can talk to my profs, and they care about me. They want to see me become more than just a nurse; they want to see me become someone that’s a really effective follower of Jesus in the health-care field.

Q: How has your research project impacted you practically in your learning?

A: My research project, the Planetary Health Report Card, basically looks at how we can integrate planetary health into our curriculum and considers how well we

are doing that. The interdisciplinary collaboration in this project has really bled into my work at the hospital in my preceptorship. I’ve seen how I need to connect with people from different disciplines to understand or solve an issue. In the clinical setting, it’s helped me see how important it is, for instance, to work with the physicians, the physiotherapists, and the occupational therapists to help a patient get out of the hospital in a way that really works for them.

Q: What’s been a highlight for you in the BSN program at TWU?

A: This may sound super cliché, but honestly, just relationships. We know all of our profs and our classmates, and that’s what makes this experience so special. We’re taught by world-renowned academics— the best of the best—and you know them.

We’re excited to share that since this interview, Johan has graduated from TWU and has officially registered as an RN. He was offered a job at Vancouver General Hospital, but God had other plans. Johan admits that he always had within him a curiosity toward medicine, so he decided not to silence it. He applied to the UBC Faculty of Medicine—and got in!

“I am very excited to start this journey into the world of medicine. Although this is a shift in my trajectory, I believe that everything I learned in nursing at TWU will serve me well in this new direction.” Johan Bouwer (’23)

I love relationships—that’s how I learn. At TWU, I can talk to my profs, and they care about me.
