"Mountain Laurels and Ganesh," a still life oil on canvas by Vani Akula. This month, ArtSpace Gallery in the Tioga County Council on the Arts building, 179 Front Street in Owego, features the work of Vani Akula of Corning, New York. Akula paints using the alla prima (or direct painting) technique, a wet-on-wet technique used primarily in oil painting. Alla prima painting is a unique way of completing a portrait, as it forces the artist to choose the essence for the piece. This exhibition, AAKARA, Shapes,

includes alla prima portraits done both from life and from still lifes, and presents a dual perspective. More images from Akula's portfolio are at www.vanifineart.com. A special reception at the ArtSpace Gallery will be held as part of the 3rd Friday ArtWalk on February 15, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. The artist will give an alla prima painting demonstration during the reception from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Refreshments will be served.

Owego Little League News First Time Sign-Ups First time sign-ups will be held February 5 and 9, at Central Fire Station and online until February 13 Owego Little League's major event of the upcoming 62nd season is player registration for National, American, Modified, T-Ball and ASA Girls Softball and Teener Baseball to keep the league growing and successful. For returning player registrations, use the new online system until midnight Wednesday, February 13. Go to the OLL website http://www.eteamz.com/owego/ and follow the prompts for registration. First time requires dad or mom or guardian to bring with them a returnable birthday certificate for the sign up at the Owego Central Fire Station on North Avenue, across from John's Fine Foods. Player Agent Karen Vinti says her volunteers will be in the fire station on Tuesday, February 5, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and again on Saturday, February 9, from 9:00 am to 12 Noon. League Treasurer Steve Lounsberry says player registration time is a great time to volunteer to become an umpire, manager, coach, concession stand volunteer and ground crew helpers.

Because of the extraordinary volunteerism shown by the parents, OLL President Ken Winters says players have never paid an OLL signup fee since 1952. To play Teener Baseball in the Southern Tier Baseball League, there is a required $30 fee at the time of first practice to cover those league expenses. OLL Web Site 24/7 An important resource for parents and players is the OLL's Web Site www.eteamz.com/owego. Webmaster Eric Hawkins posts updates and keeps social media Facebook and Twitter fresh. Little League-International automatically updates the OLL Web Site with news from Williamsport. Find the stories in a news box located just below the banner at the top of the OLL Home Page. Among the new stories are the new Little League Tee Ball Program designed to promote activity, fun and fitness, while teaching fundamentals, Information on Child Abuse, Little League Background Checks and Free Coaches Resources.
