Town of Nichols ConnectALL Program Wrap-up It’s a wrap! The multimilliondollar fiber build out, led by the New York State ConnectALL Initiative, has been completed. The partnership between the State of New York, Tioga County, Town of Nichols, and the Southern Tier Network (STN) made this project possible. The Town of Nichols was chosen by the State’s broadband department (ConnectALL) as one of four communities to roll out the Initiative with the expressed purpose of connecting fiber to the unserved and underserved population. Additionally, the County and Town dedicated American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds needed to complete the build out. The total project cost was approximately $7.5 million and included the required power utility upgrades, fiber build and customer installations. Ben Rydzewski, STN Operations Manag-

er, stated, “Nichols residents now have access to 38 miles of fiber, passing by nearly 800 homes and businesses. To date, over 350 residents have taken advantage of the new infrastructure.” Currently, the Internet Service Provider (ISP), FiberSpark, has partnered with STN to provide services on the Nichols Fiber Network. However, the open access model of STN allows for any ISP to connect to the fiber. STN is actively working to bring more ISPs on board, which will allow for a competitive environment thus driving more competitive pricing and options for residents and business owners to choose from. STN Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Gasper, offered, “The project has provided the availability of directly connecting the residents, businesses, library, and County sites to the newly constructed fiber optic network.”

For his thirty counts (30) of Interference with or Injury to Certain Domestic Animals, he will receive indeterminate sentences on each of between 1 1/3 to 4 years in state prison. Because all of the crimes resulted from the one act of setting a fire, New York State law requires the sentences to be served concurrently. Sentencing is scheduled for April 19, 2024.

It’s February 1974. In Berkeley, California, Patty Hearst, 19, is kidnapped at gunpoint from her apartment. New York State begins a voluntary “odd-even” gasoline rationing program. If your license plate ends in an odd number, you buy gas only on odd numbered days. If it ends with an even number, you only get gasoline on even numbered days. Those with no numbers on their license plate are to get gasoline on odd numbered days. Drivers are also requested not to fill up their gas tanks if it is more than half full. Skylab3 astronauts return to Earth after 12 weeks in space. Julie Nixon Eisenhower predicts that the country will have a woman president within 10 years. Nelson Rockefeller favors impeachment proceedings for President Nixon because that is “the only thing that’s going to satisfy the American people.” In the New York area, more than half of the gas stations are closed. At the stations that are open, the lines of cars stretch for miles. The Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), kidnappers of Patty Hearst, demand that her father give away $300,000,000 worth of food. The Daytona 500 is shortened to 450 miles to conserve fuel. Richard Petty wins the race driving a 1974 Dodge. Sonny Bono files for separation from Cher. The latest fad is streaking - running naked in public! New York Governor Wilson makes the odd-even gas rationing plan mandatory. IBM’s board of directors elects John R. Opel, 49, president.

The Home Dairy Company cafeteria and bakery at 58 Court Street in Binghamton closes after 37 years of business. Werner Kemperer, 51, best known as Colonel Klink on “Hogan’s Heroes,” is in Binghamton to help raise money for the March of Dimes Telerama held at the Masonic Temple. Gasoline prices rise to 50.4 cents per gallon. Many local dealers limit the amount of gas sold to drivers to $3.00. Some gas stations close on the weekends. Robert Miller is named Tioga County’s first public defender. “The Exorcist” opens in Endicott. Movie-goers start lining up outside the theater two hours before showtime. The Owego-Apalachin school officials vote to petition state and federal officials to repeal the year-round Daylight Saving Time law “so that our students will not be subjected to the danger of early morning darkness.” The Iron Kettle Inn on Route 17 in Waverly is destroyed in a fire. Movies playing in local theaters include “McQ,” “Serpico,” “Superdad,” “Son of Flubber,” “American Grafitti, “Sting,” and “The Way We Were.” Top tunes include “You’re Sixteen” by Ringo Starr “Love’s Theme” by Love Unlimited Orchestra, “The Way We Were” by Barbra Streisand, “Time in a Bottle” by Jim Croce, and “Let Me Be There” by Olivia Newton John. Monday night TV shows include “The Rookies,” “The Magician,” “Dick Van Dyke,” “Here’s Lucy,” “Medical Center,” and “Gunsmoke.” And a ticket to see “The Exorcist” at the Cinema Theater on East Main Street in Endicott costs $3.00.

Owego, N.Y. – Owego Hose Teams, Inc. will host its 7th Annual Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 1, at Tioga Golf Club in Nichols, New York. The tournament in partnership with Tioga Downs Casino Resort is one of the largest charity golf tournaments in the Southern Tier with 67 teams participating last year and nearly 100 sponsors supporting the event. In 2023 tournament organizers celebrated a 6th straight year with more than 64 teams that memorializes the Line of Duty Deaths (LODD) of Fallen Owego Firefighters and Hose Team Members Steve Gavin and Matt Porcari along with recently deceased Hose Team Members. “We expect our tournament to sell out again this year and encourage teams to get their registrations in early,” said Tournament Co-Chair John Loftus. The tournament was Loftus’s brainchild after the Hose Team incorporated as a 501c3 not-for-profit in 2016. “Our partnership with Mr. Gural and Tioga Downs on this tournament has benefitted the Owego community tenfold since we started,” he said. Funding raised from the tournament support scholarships for graduating Owego Free Academy seniors pursuing a first responder field, maintenance costs for the restored Baker Fireman’s Fountain in the Village of Owego’s Courthouse Square, and funding for the restoration for the Owego Fire Department’s 1866 Amoskeag Steam Fire Engine and associated Steamer House that is being built on North Avenue. The tournament paid for 40% of Baker Fireman’s Fountain restoration costs and funded $5,500 in scholarships to date. The steam fire engine restoration will be completed this year along with the Steamer House. Roughly one third of the Steamer project costs have been paid for by the Hose Team Golf Tournament. “We run a tournament that is second to none in the area,” said Tournament Co-Chair Pat Gavin. “The service we get from Tioga Golf Club and Tioga Downs is exceptional along with the financial support they provide as tournament sponsors.” Gavin noted it is typically he and Tioga Golf Club Superintendent Jason Harris who are the first to arrive at the course at 4:00 am on tournament day and last to leave at 10:00 pm. Gavin said, “It is a long day and lot of hard work by our core group of Hose Team volunteers to pull off such a large tournament each and every year but the improvements in our community through tournament revenue certainly make it

worth it.” He added his sincere appreciation to all the golfers and sponsors as son of one of the Fallen Firefighters remembered at the event. Annual features of the Hose Team Tournament include chances to win golf equipment and destination vacations at six par three holes; “Players’ Package” with goodies for each player; prizes and contests to include skins, longest drive, closest to the cooler and putting challenge; “Big Board Raffle” with items valued at over $100; and huge 50/50 raffle. As part of the raffle, one player each round wins a chance at a milliondollar shot for a hole in one from the 18th hole fairway. Steve Kovall was a $10,000 hole in one winner in 2022. Live mermaids also serve special tropical drinks at the turn and players toast Hose Team Member Chris Franz’s memory at “Toph’s Tavern” and Hose Team Member Bobby Watkin’s memory at “Big Bob’s Watering Hole” along the course. Tournament Co-Chair Lou Striley said, “Many of the players mark on the calendar every year not to miss the first Saturday in June at Tioga Golf Club. In true Hose Team fashion, we have a lot of fun.” As part of the “Big Board Raffle” following the COVID-19 pandemic the Hose Team began purchasing $100 gift certificates from local businesses in support of economic recovery efforts. This practice continues today. In addition to the gift certificates, box seats can be won to a Buffalo Bills, New York Giants, or New York Jets National Football League (NFL) game and New York Mets or Yankees Major League Baseball (MLB) game as part of the Big Board. A high-end $100 raffle ticket is also available with a potential purse up to $5,000 for a golf ball drop raffle. You do not need to be present to win and tickets can be purchased from Hose Team Member Tom Donovan at 607-687-1975 or tdonovan2@stny.rr.com. The raffle is sanctioned by the New York State Gaming Commission. Improvements at Tioga Golf Club in recent history include a new club house, electric golf carts, repaved cart paths, and a new putting green coming soon. Registration for this year’s tournament on June 1st is now open on the Hose Team website at www.OwegoHoseTeams.com. Both morning and afternoon flights are available. Sponsorship information is available there, too. The Hose Team also recently announced a second tournament this year at Tioga Golf Club in support of the Central New York Firefighter’s Association in October. More information on that tournament will be released this summer.

Karenlea Kretsch, formerly of Rock Island IL., left this world peacefully on January 3, 2024, surrounded by love to be reunited with her family, friends, and soulmate, Hank. Karenlea was born in Monmouth, IL on October 19, 1939, to Mabel Handley and Jack Jacobson. She married her high school sweetheart Edward L. Kretsch, and went to the University of Illinois in Champaign Urbana, where they welcomed their daughter Pamela in 1962. They moved to Owego, NY, and worked for IBM (FSD) in 1965. Karenlea worked at IBM, starting in a secretarial position and worked her way up to management, retiring on her 30th anniversary in 1995. She is remembered for always standing up for her beliefs and keeping herself busy volunteering with numerous organizations. She was on the board of many nonprofit organizations such as Owego Business and Professional Women (now NYS Women Inc. Susquehanna Chapter), and A New Hope Center. She had a zest for life and enjoyed traveling, polka dancing, and spending time with her lady friends. She was the Queen Mother and founder of the Susquehanna Sweethearts Red Hat Group, a member of numerous Bridge and Pokeno groups, the Loyal Order of Moose Owego, part of the Polka Paraders, and a member of her beloved Jimmy Sturr Fan Club. She was happiest when she was spending time with her family. Her entire world revolved around her loved ones. She made the most of her time with them, spoiled them, and enjoyed traveling with them. Her greatest trip was her Mediterranean Cruise celebrating her 72nd birthday and Hank’s 85th birthday.

Karenlea was predeceased by her father and mother Jack Jacobson and Mabel Jacobson (Handley), her aunt and uncle Leatha Irey (Handley) and Robert Irey, her partner of 29 years Henry B. Danelli, and her furry four-legged companion Fiona Marie. Karenlea is survived by her daughter, Pamela Lea Pringle, her granddaughter Lauren Michelle Pringle, her son-in-law, Robert J. Pringle, and her great grand puppies, Loralee and Bella Rose. A celebration of life is planned for Sunday February 25, 2024, at the Loyal Order of Moose in Owego, 1:00 to 4:00 pm. To accommodate for the luncheon, a headcount will be needed by Friday, February 16, 2024, to 607-621-6190.
