Golf is a leisure activity that requires serious athletic training to prevent injury and increase endurance, flexibility and strength. Specific training by a certified golf specialist can strengthen areas most commonly injured and improve your game at the same time.

The Club’s culinary team debuts three menus that were designed to reflect seasonal ingredients and new techniques to elevate members’ dining experiences whether it’s breakfast before a match, a casual lunch with friends or an exquisite meal and wine pairing.

The Gun Club at Cordillera Ranch is a great place to practice target shooting in a beautiful setting, but the professional instructors and staff understand the importance of personal safety, providing a variety of courses for beginners to advanced shooters.

STAFF PROFILE

JANE RILEY, Ed.D, C.P.T.

Director of Fitness and Wellness at Cordillera Ranch 808.212.8119 :: jriley@cordilleraranch.com

HOMETOWN: London, Canada HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR OCCUPATION? I have been into fitness and wellness since my late teens, and was rather a pioneer in weight-training for women. I began competing in powerlifting and bodybuilding at a national level. People started asking for my advice on how to be strong and fit so I got certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine in Chicago. I believe academics are just as important as experience. I have my Undergraduate degree in Physical Education and Psychology from The University of Western Ontario in London, a Master’s in Gerontology from The University of Massachusetts in Boston and my Doctorate in Educational Psychology from California Coast University. I am also certified in just about every fitness modality that you can think of. My education and experience help me serve the members of Cordillera every day. HOW DID YOU BECOME EMPLOYED AT THE CLUBS OF CORDILLERA RANCH? I was working at a facility that did not have the degree of vision, the collaborative teamwork or level of sophistication as Cordillera Ranch. Naturally, when I was offered the position, I jumped at the chance to be a part of this wonderful facility and community. WHAT PAST WORK HISTORY PREPARED YOU FOR THE CLUBS? I have been the GM in fitness facilities, and supervisor of University Research facilities and of private research facilities in pathology. I have written numerous magazine and newspaper articles on fitness and wellness. I had my own talk radio show on fitness and wellness in London for over three years, as well as a T.V. show on Kauai. I have also owned and operated three international health and wellness companies, and was owner and chief trainer for the Independently Healthy Academy which trained fitness trainers in all aspects to the national level certification. WHAT MAKES YOUR COLLEAGUES AN ASSET TO THE CLUBS? My team members all have one goal in mind and that is providing exceptional service. We are focused on helping our members look and feel well, and giving them the best possible experience while doing so. The team members all carry the highest level of certifications and are constantly upgrading their skills so that they remain on the cutting edge of research. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE? There have been many times in my life where I have helped people recover from devastating accidents or disease processes, and those are very rewarding. However, I celebrate everyone’s

28 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

victories be it weight loss, muscle gain, making the team, recovering from an injury or disease, improving their golf or tennis game or just feeling more control of activities of daily living. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WORKING AT CORDILLERA RANCH? At last I have found a home! This is a community of people who are involved in their own well-being and are engaged in activities that are social, fun and empowering. I love being surrounded by positive, go-ahead people who are looking for ways that they can improve their own health and well-being. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND INTERESTS? I work out. I love cooking, travel… especially Europe, reading, studying, theater, and I like dressing up. I guess I’m kind of “girly.” FAVORITE QUOTE OR MOTTO? If you can’t think of something nice to say, try harder. MOST MEANINGFUL PERSONAL EXPERIENCE? My most meaningful personal experiences are when I married my fabulous husband Dan and became a mother to my beautiful daughter Rose.

TEXAS INVESTORS TITLE

Knowledge and Experience

UNSURPASSED By Dan R. Goddard

Think of Texas Investors Title as the small-town company that can compete with the big boys in Dallas and Houston. Based in Boerne, the full-service title company is among a handful of Texas firms specializing in high-end, million-dollar-plus real estate transactions. Capable of closing transactions anywhere in Texas or the nation, Texas Investors is the title company of choice for Cordillera Ranch. “We can compete with the biggest title companies in the state,” Steve Vallone, Chief Executive Officer and primary closer, says. “Since our fees are regulated by the state, all title companies charge the same premiums. But we have grown to be one of the top title companies in Texas because of our service and expertise. We are competent in closing any transaction, with our primary focus being the satisfaction of our customer and the accuracy of our work product.” Texas Investors is known for going the extra mile to ensure smooth, efficient, stress-free closings. “If you can’t come to our office, we’ll come to you when it’s time for documents to be signed,” Vallone says. “We have obtained signatures from a doctor between surgeries at a hospital, as well as a seller while

30 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

the movers were loading furniture at the property being sold. We try to make things as easy as possible and with the least amount of stress.” A title company, essentially, handles all the paperwork involved in a real estate transaction, including historical research, confirming ownership and determining what recorded documents affect the property, such as mineral rights, mortgages, easements and other legal issues. To complete the transaction, the title company provides escrow services, including providing, collecting and getting all pertinent documents signed and then collecting the money and paying all involved. Finally, the title company issues a title insurance policy guaranteeing the accuracy of its work. “We represent all sides of a real estate transaction and handle all of the many documents that are involved,” Vallone says. “The title insurance policy provides a defense if we have overlooked a document or misconstrued something. We go out of the way to help with legal bills. We try to fix any problem without causing a large amount of attorney fees.” As an independent agent, Texas Investors represents multiple underwriters for title insurance policies. The company services a wide variety of customers and can handle all of your title insurance needs whether commercial, residential or farm and ranch. But with a focus on high-end transactions, Texas Investors keeps its volume low, which allows the company to take a more proactive role in resolving title matters such as obtaining variances from homeowner associations and reviewing surveys. Texas Investors shares investors in Cordillera Ranch, which makes for a close working relationship, Vallone says. “We know all the properties in Cordillera Ranch inside and out,” Vallone says. “While it’s not a requirement for Cordillera Ranch residents to use our services, no other title company can match our knowledge and experience working with Cordillera Ranch.” “We know when we are using Texas Investors Title that there simply won’t be any last-minute hiccups or delays; that’s a critical element in determining the best title company to use. They are service-oriented and committed to delivering on time without hassles, which is incredibly comforting in our business,” says Charlie Hill, President of Cordillera Ranch Development Corp. President and Escrow Officer Becky Edmiston is a Certified Escrow Settlement Professional (CESP), one of only about 200 people in the state with the certification by the Texas Land Title Association. She oversees the day-to-day operations of Texas Investors with nine people at its Boerne headquarters and one in a branch office in Houston. “We are a very tight group and everyone has their specialty,” Edmiston says. “Our Residential, Farm & Ranch, and Commercial Departments consist of experienced escrow personnel with backgrounds in legal, title and real estate. Their knowledge of contracts, title insurance and general real estate procedures enable them to work closely with the parties regardless of the type of transaction.” TEXAS INVESTORS TITLE

WESTERN ADVENTURE LEADS TO

CORDILLERA RANCH 36 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

By Cheryl Van Tuyl Jividen :: Photography by Mark Humphries

It’s a good thing Nancy Smith’s friends were late for dinner that night in Carmel, Indiana. Waiting in the restaurant lobby for them, she engaged in conversation with a tall stranger waiting for a table. Cameron Hutchison, a labor relations consultant who was based in North Carolina was in Indiana for a long-term project. The two found they had much in common and Smith’s group invited him to join their table. “We’ve been together ever since,” says Nancy of her husband of twelve years.

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 37

As random as their meeting was, their similarities were definite. Both were empty nesters, were close in age, were adventurers and had the ability to work from anywhere. Nancy, a career hospitalist nurse, worked in surgical units and recovery before becoming a resource team nurse supporting in any department she was needed. Cameron is the founder and president of Hutchison Group, Inc., a human resources and labor relations management consulting firm he started in 1996 (www.hutchgrp.com). “Prior to starting my business, I had a great corporate job, but always had a yearning to be an entrepreneur, so I took a leap of faith; 23 years later the rest is history, and we continue to fill an important niche in the market,” says Cameron.

38 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

Cameron’s company provides a wide range of services, and they are especially noted for their ability to help employers create productive and cooperative work environments, maintain union free status, negotiate competitive “win-win” labor agreements (for union-represented locations), support mergers and acquisitions, facilitate employee relations assessments and conduct onsite supervisor training. The firm has assisted clients with several large multi-billion-dollar projects. Most notably, Cameron successfully negotiated competitive union labor agreements for General Electric, Boeing and General Motors divestitures, helping new ownership restructure labor costs and improve productivity and, in turn, position both the company and their employees for future success. “The one piece of advice I give to all my clients is listen to and learn from your employees and let them know that their efforts and contributions are appreciated,” says Cameron. For his work in human resources and labor relations, Cameron has received numerous awards including the HR Excellence Award sponsored by KPMG Consulting. He served as an advisor on business development matters for two State Governors, taught business management courses at Ohio State University, and was invited by the Director of the U.S. Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service to present at their annual conference where he was recognized as an innovator in the field of labor relations. In addition, Hutchison Group is frequently retained by private equity firms like KKR, The Carlyle Group and Onex to evaluate potential acquisitions and assist with integration activities. Other well-known clients include: United Technologies, Dow Chemical, GKN Aerospace, Spirit AeroSystems, CenturyLink, PepsiCo, Allison Transmission, Haier and Westinghouse. It was a project such as these that brought Cameron to Carmel, Indiana, and he persuaded Nancy to join him in North Carolina once it was completed. However, the West would come calling. Raised on a 2,500-acre farm in Rockville, Indiana, Nancy and her family vacationed each summer in western states including Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. “Dad had a love for the West that inspired me,” says Nancy who remembers the trips were full of natural beauty and wildlife. Cameron, who grew up on the East Coast, had never been to the West. Following travels

all over the West, the couple were ready for a move specifically seeking a place of adventure. They chose Summerlin, Nevada, a community that lies between the Spring Mountains and the Red Rock Canyon. “Some people think the desert is simply a barren wasteland. After living there, nothing could be further from the truth; we learned all about how the desert has a true-life form of its own,” shares Nancy. After five years, it was time for another adventure with a move to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains near Fort Collins, Colorado. On their 40-acre ranch, Nancy was able to reignite her love for horseback riding and dogs. “My dad was an animal lover who rode horses and had me on a horse as soon as I could walk,” says Nancy. “I get my adventure, my affinity for nature and fearlessness from him. It served me well as a nurse and I use what I learned to this day.” With that experience, she and Cameron enjoyed planning and designing their horse facilities in preparation for their growing family. After much research, the barn became home to a rare, dappled Rocky Mountain Horse named Hickory and Sundance, a Tennessee Walking Horse. Both geldings, the sweet-natured horses were raised and trained together as yearlings in trail riding at a ranch in Oklahoma that specializes in gaited buckskin

horses — gait breeds are known for smooth riding and unique footwork. Riding was new to Cameron. “Nancy inspired me; I had never been on a horse,” he says. “The horses are like brothers; they groom each other in the pasture and come running when they see us often trying to be in our pockets. They are like big dogs. Caring for and riding them is simply therapeutic,” says Nancy. The horses were joined by more family with the addition of big Irish Wolfhounds Whiskey and Akela, and a harlequin Great Dane named Harley — a breed Nancy had as a child. Colorado had its charms, but for the cold. “During winters we lost a lot of time bundling up to go out and enjoy the outdoors,” says Cameron. Five years later, they were ready to relocate. “We said we would never leave the West, but we were in search of a warmer climate,” says Nancy. A friend suggested a move to the Texas Hill Country, and research lead them to Cordillera Ranch. Cameron says the fit was ideal, “For us it’s the perfect mix between the resort lifestyle we enjoyed in Nevada and the ranching lifestyle we lived in Colorado. It suits our needs. Cordillera is a jewel and the trail system is fantastic.” “We were fortunate that Vance Waller showed us the ideal lot to build on, because we made it clear it was all about the horses,”

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 39

says Nancy. Cameron adds, “It’s a great lot with relatively flat land and pasture and access to three trails, an advantage for us as we don’t need to trailer the horses.” They chose Garner Homes and collaborated with architect Jim Terrian. “We spent more time working on the barn than the house! The design was so fun, a real team effort,” says Cameron. Their new home provides a place for Cameron to showcase his guitar collection including a dozen vintage acoustic and electric models. “In high school and college, I was in an informal band. Now I’m collecting the guitars I always wanted back then,” he says. Playing every day in the music room sound studio Nancy’s son Darin designed for Cameron is cathartic for the musician and songwriter, “It’s a great way to unwind after a long day in the office.” Nancy and Cameron travel regularly to visit their children and grandchildren who live out-of-state and they enjoy sharing Cordillera Ranch with family. “Riding, kayaking, swimming, lunch at the Club, even skipping rocks with the grandkids on the Guadalupe — these are ways we are making memories,” says Nancy. Only Cordillera Ranch residents for a year, Nancy and Cameron have made many friends. “Our dogs and horses are social lubricants; it’s how we met all our neighbors so fast. Animals bring people together,” says Cameron. Nancy says, “The best thing about Texas are the people. Not just in our neighborhood, but in the greater community. Everyone is so genuine, so fun and very neighborly.” The plan, they say, is for this to be their forever home. Nancy sums it up, “Life is all about your story and we’re just trying to live a good one. We saved the best for last!”

GOLF

My name is Corey Roberson and I’m excited to join the team at Cordillera Ranch as the new Director of Golf. I grew up around the golf business, watching my dad run Van Zandt Country Club in Canton, Texas. For those of you who don’t know, Canton is a small country town in East Texas known for a monthly flea market called First Monday. My childhood home was a small house on club property, and I spent every waking moment at the golf course. This is where I fell in love with the game and eventually earned a scholarship to play college golf at Texas State University. In college, I thought playing professional golf for a living was my next step, but I started to realize that wasn’t what I really wanted — it was helped by the fact that I wasn’t good enough! While I enjoyed playing and competing, I truly loved the atmosphere around a golf course and interaction with people that enjoy the game. I graduated in May of 2010 and jumped straight into the golf business. Throughout my career, I have worked in every area of a golf operation, from picking the range and washing carts to answering the phone and placing special orders to building and training a high-functioning team of golf professionals that provide an unparalleled level of service to an elite membership. My first real assistant job was at Shady Valley in Arlington, which is where I met my wife, Colleen. She grew up there and I played a lot of golf with her dad. Colleen played college golf at The University of the Incarnate Word and we got married in 2017. We have strong ties to the Boerne/San Antonio area with Colleen’s family, love the Texas Hill Country and wanted a slower pace of life than in Dallas. From a club perspective, the challenge of building upon the relaxed, high-end culture at Cordillera Ranch holds unrivaled appeal. We are excited to settle down and start our family in this beautiful part of South Texas. For the last 7.5 years, I have been honing my skills at Preston Trail Golf Club in Dallas as 1st Assistant Professional under the mentorship of Head Professional Cameron Doan. Cameron, or Sarge as we call him, won the 2018 PGA National Bill Strausbaugh Award and was inducted into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame this year. Preston Trail is not only an elite club known for good food, great golf and exceptional service — it’s also one of the best training grounds in the country for golf professionals. Sarge and Preston Trail have a reputation for advancing assistant professionals to head professionals, directors of golf and directors

of instruction at platinum level clubs. The program at PT takes best practices in inspired leadership and performance impact from business and the sports world and applies them to golf. I’m excited to apply similar principles to the golf operation at Cordillera Ranch. Below are a few PT alumni: • John Lanham, Prairie Dunes Country Club (Hutchinson, KS), Head Professional • Simon Buckle, Brook Hollow Golf Club (Dallas, TX), Head Professional • Travis Johns, Medinah Country Club (Medinah, IL), Director of Instruction • Phillip Prude, Wichita Country Club (Wichita, KS), Head Professional Now, PT can add Corey Roberson, The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch (Boerne, TX), Director of Golf. Colleen and I can’t wait to move south and get to know the membership at Cordillera Ranch. Golf is a huge part of our lives and I’d like to leave you with a little story. The game has introduced me to a diverse group of people, including a past president and a few professional athletes, but my most memorable moment on the golf course was shared with my wife. In 2017, I played in the PGA Professional Championship and Colleen caddied for me. We had a fun week and having her on the bag helped me relax. I’m standing on #13 tee in the final round, coming off a bad bogey on #12 — I’m mad and nervous because I hadn’t sniffed getting a tee ball in the fairway on #13 all week. So, I asked Colleen if I should hit 3 wood and try to get it in the fairway or take my chances with the driver. Her response was priceless: “Just hit the driver over there in the left trees like you have all week — you’re due for a par from over there.” The rest of our group heard what she said and couldn’t keep a straight face. I couldn’t help but laugh and, sure enough, I wiped it in the left trees, sliced it up by the green, and got it up and down for par. I look forward to meeting you at The Club, Corey

Precise and Effective Training

for

GOLF

By Jane Riley :: Photography by Kelsey Grudle

There are an estimated 26.4 million golfers of all ages in the U.S., making it more popular currently than any other time in history. Although golf is considered by many to be a leisure activity, it is a serious athletic pursuit that can produce injury and trauma. In fact, golf is one of the highest injury-producing sports in America. Golf is a game that requires high levels of skill, eye-hand coordination, flexibility and mobility, muscular power, strength and endurance. A fitness program designed by a certified golf training specialist can not only strengthen your body to prevent injury, but improve your game at the same time. Studies show that professional and amateur golfers have similar injury rates, but experience different types of injuries. Professional golfers most often injure their lower backs, followed by the left wrist and left shoulder for right-handed golfers. The elbow is the most common injury site for amateur golfers, followed by the lower back and shoulder. Elbow injuries are also common in female golfers. Lower back injuries occur primarily from overuse and poor mechanics of movement. Nearly 85 percent of injuries to the elbow occur on the lateral aspect of the joint and are likely due to improper mechanics in golfers who lack the strength, mobility and skill to perform a mechanically sound swing. Shoulder pain is also prevalent in both professional and amateur golfers and is usually caused from lack of flexibility and weakness in the rotator cuff which alters swing biomechanics leading to cumulative trauma. Other causes of shoulder pain include shoulder impingement and damage to the labrum of the shoulder joint. In order for a golf swing to be as proficient as possible, the entire human movement system — the nervous system, the articular system, the skeletal and muscular systems — must possess proper amounts of strength, power, stability, flexibility and neuromuscular control. Training for golf proficiency must include flexibility, the core, balance, plyometrics, resistance training and sport-specific cardio-respiratory training. Through golf-specific training programs like rotational power training, club head speed can be increased significantly, adding length to the drive without costing accuracy. Specific

44 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

exercises are required to increase upper torso axial rotational velocity, increasing club head speed and driving distance. Using a multifaceted approach as part of a progressive exercise system can show results such as improving club head speed, decreasing golf trajectory errors and reducing total golf score in just a few weeks. Another important factor in golf performance is explosive force, meaning that one is capable of moving the club with speed and power to create powerful shots. Exercise can increase power output by training the muscles to do more work in a shortened period of time using the stretch-shortening cycle. This is best noted in the back-swing. The shorter the amount of time between the end of the eccentric stretch action and the concentric contraction, the greater the potential energy transfer. Working on stabilization, strength, core strength and neuromuscular efficiency helps control the time between the eccentric and concentric contraction. Certified golf training specialists can have the most profound effect on golf performance for their clients. TRX and Rip Training exercises are considered foundational for increasing golf performance, and the Fitness Center offers private and semi-private training on these game-changing modalities. INTERMITTENT FASTING AND the Benefits Thereof! By Jane Riley

I learned in my thirties as a competitive bodybuilder about restricting food intake to earlier hours in the day to facilitate a lean, muscular look. When preparing for a bodybuilding show, I never ate past 4:00pm and this is a habit that I have continued throughout my life simply because it is a good way to stay lean. There are many current research projects that underline the health benefits of intermittent fasting and timed eating. The benefits are not simply a good way to get and stay lean but actually confer many other important health benefits. Although the idea of intermittent fasting might sound like a radical approach, it is much more easily accomplished than other types of remedial eating patterns. You typically will eat less in a day and you will eat within certain times of the day, which can reduce the stress of meal preparation and clean-up. You want to focus on eating healthy omega-three fats from fatty fish and nuts, and eliminate as much as possible the hard, saturated fats or trans-fats from prepared foods. You also want to consume organic veggies and fruit, and carbohydrates from whole food sources. Simple! Clean eating. HERE ARE SOME OF THE PROVEN BENEFITS TO INTERMITTENT FASTING: • It gives your body a break from the energy-dependent digestive process and provides it an opportunity to cleanse. • Multiple studies indicate that this style of eating reduces the risk of breast cancer, lowers triglycerides and blood pressure and raises the good cholesterol levels (HDL). • It improves the symptoms of autoimmune diseases such as lupus and multiple sclerosis. • It helps improve the management of blood sugar issues because it is proven to lower insulin resistance and increase metabolism. • The caloric restriction, and the fact that you are working with your body’s natural metabolic cycle rather than against it, encourages body fat loss. Leptin is a hormone largely responsible for fat storage or use of fat for energy. When the body is under chronic inflammation, it becomes leptin resistant which causes the body to continually store fat rather than use it for energy. Chronic inflammation dulls the brain’s leptin receptor sites. Intermittent fasting will, paradoxically, curb your cravings. You might think that restricting food intake to certain times might

46 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

make you hungrier but the reverse has been shown to occur. • Fasting is implicated in increasing cognitive function and has even shown positive impact with those affected by such disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. • It improves lung health and has shown positive ability to decrease asthma symptoms. • It has shown positive results in helping heal the gut of inflammatory diseases such as IBS, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Of course, you should always check with your health care provider to ensure that this style of eating is not counter-indicated by any pre-existing conditions that might prohibit your undertaking of the plan. This is especially true if you have a history of disordered eating. To begin a lifestyle of intermittent fasting, the easiest way is to simply restrict your calorie intake to the hours between 8:00am and 6:00pm. You get 14 hours of fasting every day and will derive benefits from that. To up the ante, simply extend the window of fasting by a few hours. I personally try not to eat past 4:00pm as this keeps me healthy and helps me rest well and feel good. Although you are not consuming calories, it is necessary to stay hydrated. Drinking clear tea, herbal tea or water is important to help you flush out the toxins from your body. Still another way of fasting intermittently is to do a full day fast in which you consume nothing but water, tea or a nutritional cleanse product and limit your calorie intake to approximately 500 calories for women and 700 calories for men. Using water and tea or a cleanse product, plus a few healthy snacks throughout the day, helps you achieve a deeper cleanse than the timing of food intake on an everyday schedule, but both plans have excellent health benefits. The benefits are many. I encourage you to give your body a break and use intermittent fasting to improve your health. .

TENNIS

FALL

TENNIS at a Glance By Joe De Luna

Summer has come and gone and although it still feels like summer with hot temperatures, the kids are back in school and the fall tennis season has arrived. This fall will be busy with adult tennis teams and Pickleball leagues as well as the Cordillera Junior Tennis Academy. Several tennis social events are planned throughout the fall and The Club Championships for men and women will be held in October. 48 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

This fall begins a new chapter in Cordillera Ranch tennis and I am pleased to say that we will have three ladies’ teams competing in San Antonio and surrounding areas. On Thursday mornings Bobbie Sandborn will Captain a 3.0 40 and over team. This team will consist of ladies at the 3.0 level who are over the age of 40 and they will play four lines of doubles each week. This league starts September 5 and runs through November. On Friday mornings Cordillera will boast two teams. Kelley Gosdin will Captain a team with a roster of 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 players that will participate in a fun citywide league that plays four lines of doubles. This team will start play September 13 and finish on November 15. Friday will also host a 2.5 team that will play one line of singles and two lines of doubles with the season starting September 6 and ending in November. It will be a busy fall for our Cordillera ladies and I wish them the best of luck!

Pickleball is a growing sport and social activity, and Cordillera Ranch is experiencing this growth as well. Afternoon and evening leagues are planned along with group outings to play against other clubs in San Antonio. Combined with our normal social play, the Pickleball courts will be busy this fall. The Cordillera Junior Tennis Academy is a three day per week junior program for ages 10 and under through 18 and under. This program begins on August 20 and meets Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays after school, providing a path for junior players to develop skills and strokes to allow them to be successful in middle school and high school tennis and an opportunity to seek qualification for a state ranking through the USTA. The Cordillera Junior Tennis Academy will continue into December. Social events, Club championships, Ladies MemberGuest, new member clinics and ongoing clinics and lessons will surely make for a fun and exciting fall for Cordillera Ranch Tennis. Hope to see you on the courts soon!

CELLAR CLUB

From Wine and Beyond… By Jeffrey Cohen Huneeus Portfolio Wine Dinner

In this edition, I would like to personally invite everybody to try out our new wines by the glass along with all of our new menus. I will pair a few wines to help out as well as to spark up conversation.

Barone Fini Pinot Grigio. The vineyard is located in the pristine northern Italian Alps. The grapes are 100% hand harvested. This Pinot Grigio showcases floral aromas and lemon mist with ripe juicy flavors of honeydew and apple. It is great to just quench the thirst as well. It has bright acidity but is balanced with warm minerality to create a lingering crisp finish. Recommended with the Poached Colossal Shrimp Cocktail Jordan Chardonnay. This iconic chardonnay has a nice balance of delicacy and deliciousness with aromas of honeysuckle and lemon peel which lead to bright flavors of fruit and citrus. The palate is elegant and succulent, with layers of oak-laced lemon, pears, quince and white peach — all supported by uplifting acidity. Its crisp, citrusy finish lingers on the palate, enticing you to take another sip! Recommended with the Citrus Butter Poached East Coast Lobster Tail Willamette Valley Vineyards “Whole Cluster” Pinot Noir. This is as refreshing as liquid fruit salad in a glass. It is ruby in color and opens with lively aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry and cocoa with a small hint of earthiness. A vibrant entry and juicy mid-palate features flavors that mir-

52 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

ror aromas with the addition of raspberry and vanilla. A well-rounded and soft finish, accented by refreshing acidity, carries flavors far beyond the sip. Recommended with the Crispy Skin Szechuan Duck Leg Confit Salad Cliff Lede Cabernet Sauvignon from Stags Leap in Napa. Dark purple with vermillion-tinged edges, the plush and refreshing cab lures the taster with a multidimensional perfume that fills the glass with notes of jasmine, lavender and spring flowers. Interwoven into the floral notes are unctuous layers of plum, blackberry and black currants. Loads of smoked cardamom, cinnamon and black licorice unwind onto the palate where the vibrant acidity carries the long finish to a state of balance and equilibrium. Recommended with the Coffee Crusted Buffalo Filet

Roy Estate Wine Dinner Now, for a few other pairing options, the Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc/ Semillon from the Margaret River of Australia has a unique nose consisting of fresh green lime, lemon sorbet, crisp cucumber with hints of fresh-cut lemongrass, pink peppercorn and wisteria blossom. On the palate, characteristics burst forth with lemon and lime creating a zesty liveliness. In the mouth, the wine is

medium in length displaying passion fruit, green apple skins and nectarines, with a creaminess that balances the mineralfocused backbone, giving a lively lemon gelato richness. Hints of Norfolk pine needles invoke the nearly coastal origin. Recommended with the Pan Roasted Hawaiian Mero (Sea Bass) The D 66 Grenache has a deep ruby complexion which envelopes the glass suggesting a weighty wine. It is perfumed with a tempting fusion of red and black fruit, mountain flowers, kirsch, Herbs de Provence and a wreath of new French oak. It is silky and intensely rich. The palate leads you down a path of exotic flavors including blackberry, Maraschino cherry, mocha and raspberry puree. A fine mineral component augments a persistent finish that is wrapped in sleek and satiny tannins. Recommended with the Oak Smoked Pepper Crusted New Zealand Venison Loin We will finish with the Kamen Syrah. This inky Syrah abounds with an explosion of deep, rich fruit aromas, such as black mountain berries, freshly picked plums, crème de cassis, roasted nuts and wildflowers. Hints of freshly cut suede, fruit cake, chaparral, black cardamom and black tea add savory richness to the perfect core of fruit. The wine is a powerhouse, greeting the palate with abundant and layered black and purple fruit flavors. The tannins are balanced and supple lending to an infinite finish. Recommended with the Coriander Dusted Pasture Raised Australian Lamb As Julie Andrews sang so melodically, “and these are a few of my favorite things!” I truly hope everybody had an eventful summer filled with lifelong memories. We held the fort down while you were gone! See you at the Club!

RANGE

ROVING By Shane Reynolds

The Gun Club at Cordillera Ranch is no stranger to activity. On any given week, the secluded creek canyon on 200 beautiful acres hosts members and their guests for fun shotgun shooting and target practice on the handgun range and rifle range. Teaching people about gun safety and how to shoot are both important aspects of what we offer. We provide members and their guests opportunities to learn to shoot shotguns, help scope in rifles, take personal safety classes using handguns and offer the Texas License to Carry course. The Gun Club is a great place to practice your target shooting in a fun and serene environment. As we gear up for hunting season, there are plenty of activities to get our members and their guests ready to get into the field. For the wing shooters, The Gun Club has a field with seven traps. One of the traps is the wobble trap, which moves side

56 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

to side and up and down and challenges shooters as they must adjust to a flushing target that’s direction and trajectory is unknown when they call pull. The field has six other traps where we can shoot the Five Stand and Flush games. Virtually any wing shot can be practiced in this field, from a flushing quail to a springing teal or a high crossing shot. The field also has a rabbit that moves along the ground, hopping at a good pace. This field is perfect for group outings and for teaching the basics of shotgun shooting. The clay target game of Five Stand is very similar to Sporting Clays in that a wide variety of targets are thrown in an effort to simulate situations commonly encountered when hunting upland game and waterfowl. Five Stand is a great way to get a Sporting Clays-like experience in a small amount of space, with very little walking. No two Five Stand ranges are exactly alike, but they have one thing in common: there are five “stands” or stations from which you shoot. You can shoot our Five Stand course with one to five shooters, making it a great group activity. The Five Stand has six traps, each of which throws a different target. Participants shoot in turn at each of the five stands and various combinations of targets are thrown from the traps for a total of 25 shots per round. Our outfitter staff will advise the shooter of the sequence of targets so you know what to expect, and they have the ability to change the menu set so shooters can

experience a wide variety of scenarios. It is a great range to get “tuned up” for your hunting endeavors. We have a traditional 10-station Sporting Clays course where targets are launched in a variety of ways approximating a different hunting scenario at each station. The course is a great training tool for shooters who enjoy wing shooting. Shooters rotate through ten different stations, and clays of varying sizes are used, approximating the different sizes of birds and targets found in hunting. A trapper accompanies every squad of shooters that enters the course to ensure safety and appropriate operation of the traps for consistency of targets. The course features novice-friendly targets since the fun is in breaking targets, not missing them. For competition shoots, the traps are adjusted to separate the great from the good shooters. Sporting Clays are offered year-round. Cordillera Ranch maintains a network of local shooting instructors for beginning to advanced shooters. If you need instruction before beginning your next hunting trip, are interested in learning advanced self-defense handgun techniques, or if maybe you’d like to learn to shoot your rifle off shooting sticks, our friendly staff and instructors are here to help. Shooting sports are fun and economical when it comes to entertaining a large group of shooters. We offer packages for our members and their guests that can be developed for

shooting events that include instruction, a competition course, prizes, meals and beverages. For any questions about The Gun Club at Cordillera Ranch, don’t hesitate to contact me.

A Little Halloween History Halloween is an annual holiday celebrated each year on October 31. It originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints; soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trickor-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating sweet treats. (Source: www.history.com)

COMMUNITY

PL AY

BALL(S)!

Youth sports in Boerne is supported by a community of parents and businesses who recognize each child and sport at all levels. Nearly every sport is represented in some way through several organizations — most of which are parent-formed and managed. Boerne even has lacrosse, one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S.The variety of sports offered provides kids a chance to try out each one to find their perfect fit and personal interest.

It’s no secret that participating in youth sports is beneficial for a child’s overall health and self-confidence, and teaches them the importance of being a team player. Below is an introduction to recreational youth sports supported in Boerne, but there are many select leagues, along with gymnastics, dance and cheer, available to challenge your child as well.

By Trisha Doucette :: Photo by Jennifer Wildey

Boerne Tennis (www.boernetennis.com) is also a YMCA partner, providing several programs, clinics and instruction for all ages and skill levels. Registration is available through the Boerne Tennis website.

YMCA The Boerne Family YMCA Youth Sports Program (www. ymcasatx.org/boerne) has long been providing opportunities for boys and girls, ages 13 and under, to develop skills, understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and learn to build relationships through teamwork, all in a safe and competitive environment. A year-round sports schedule includes Flag Football, Volleyball and Soccer in the fall, Basketball and Volleyball in the winter, Basketball, Volleyball and Soccer in the spring, and Basketball in the summer. Plus, a variety of clinics in advance of each league are scheduled. Age requirements vary per sport and co-ed teams are welcome in all YMCA-sponsored sports except Basketball, where the popular fall season registers more than 600 boys and girls. Dedicated parents volunteer to coach each team, and all practices and games take place within Boerne. Various other sports activities are available including Judo, Kids Camps during the summer and holidays, after school programs, and even ITTY BITTY (Intro to Sports) for 3-5 year-olds where parents participate in activities with their little ones. The YMCA partners with the Toro Soccer Academy (www. torosocceracademy.com) for their Recreational co-ed U4-U10 leagues which focus on the fundamentals of soccer and increasing their technical skill set as kids get older. U11-U16 Select programs may register directly through the Toro website.

62 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

BOERNE SOCCER CLUB - FC THUNDER The Boerne Soccer Club (www.boernesoccer.org) has been providing recreational-through-select soccer leagues since 1979. In the Recreational Program, players from U4 to U16 are led by volunteer parent coaches who are provided a curriculum and

guidance through staff coaches and directors to ensure each child is taught fundamental skills and good sportsmanship in a fun environment. Fall and spring leagues total six months of play each year, with all practices and games taking place within Boerne. U11+ teams may require game travel to San Antonio and other cities in the surrounding Hill Country. The Boerne Soccer Club also includes Academy and Select Programs for an extended age range of players in a more competitive setting and for a longer time commitment per year. Coaching in these programs is provided by paid professionals who follow a specific curriculum for advanced instruction.

BOERNE CYO St. Peter’s of Boerne Catholic Athletic Association (www.stpetersboerne.com/aboutuscyo) falls under the umbrella of the City Catholic Youth Organization sports program and is referred to as simply CYO. The organization currently provides Basketball, Volleyball and Track for boys and girls in the Boerne community. Basketball begins in late fall with separate boys’ and girls’ teams for ages 4 through 14 and plays against other parishes in San Antonio. Volleyball is a girls-only, ages 6 and older, fall league with practices beginning in August. Track is divided into six age groups, between 4 and 16, with meets in January and February. Track teams are often combined with kids from St. Elizabeth Anne Seton Catholic Church in Leon Springs. New for 2019: Boerne CYO is working diligently to add a girls’ softball program to their line-up.

LITTLE LEAGUE

BOERNE LACROSSE

Boerne Little League (www.boernelittleleague.com) provides baseball and softball programs for boys and girls ages 4 through high school. From Tee Ball and Minors Coach Pitch to Kid Pitch through the Senior level for both baseball and softball, kids develop their playing skills and learn the importance of team sports. All coaches are volunteers and follow the rules of the Little League organization. A short fall season from August through October provides a great opportunity for skill development, while the longer and more competitive spring season runs January through May. Games take place at Boerne’s Northrup Park, with some travel for the higher divisions. Recognizing the need for quality baseball and softball fields for youth through adults, the City of Boerne purchased and developed Northrup Park almost 20 years ago. Park amenities include concession stands, specific fields for T-ball, youth baseball and softball and adult softball, sand volleyball courts, a covered basketball court, a covered playground, a horseshoe pit and picnic areas with public restrooms.

Boerne Lacrosse (www.boernelacrosse.org) provides competitive spring programs for boys in grades 1 – 12 and for girls in grades 3 – 8. The regular season extends from February to May and the program offers both summer and fall opportunities for kids who want to play and improve year-round. Practices take place in Boerne with game travel throughout San Antonio, and the high school team often seeks competition as far as Austin and Houston. Boerne Lacrosse is open to boys and girls within the greater Boerne area, including Fair Oaks, Leon Springs, Helotes and Kerrville.

D1 SPORTS TRAINING New to Boerne, D1 (d1boerne@d1training.com) is a unique training concept geared towards athletes from ages 7 through adult. Sport-specific training is designed to help each athlete achieve their goals and is modified as players grow. D1 is housed in The Dugout of Boerne facilities, where baseball and softball clinics are held.

SCHOOL DISTRICT

HB 3’S IMPACT ON By Rich Sena, Trustee, Boerne Independent School District

Public school finance reform dominated Texas’ 86th legislative session, which adopted House Bill 3 that tremendously impacts Boerne ISD’s budget in terms of its “Robin Hood” payment, tax rate and revenue. Previously BISD, a property wealthy district, experienced increasing recapture payments to the State of Texas, totaling $109 million since 2005. Last year, $10.7 million of recapture, or 13% of BISD’s General Fund budget, was redistributed to property poor districts. This equals $530 in Robin Hood taxes to the average BISD homeowner. As recapture increased, BISD’s revenue/ student deteriorated in comparison to other Texas districts. In 2005, BISD was at the 70th percentile of districts in revenue/ student. By 2018-19, BISD dropped to the bottom 10%, or $1600 less/student than the state average. Texas funds public education on a weighted basis, including a Basic Allotment that is guaranteed to each student. Additional funding is based on factors including students who are economically disadvantaged, English language learners, enrolled in Career and Technical Education classes or receive Special Education services. After all weights are added to the Basic Allotment, any excess funds raised by property taxes are sent to the state for redistribution; hence the term Robin Hood. However, due to complex formulas, 60 districts, including BISD, were penalized further, making reform more urgent. Knowing school finance reform would dominate the legislative session, BISD’s School Board and Administration were

64 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

determined to have a strong voice in adopting reform. In October 2018, BISD Trustees adopted legislative priorities advocating an increase in the Basic Allotment (which reduces recapture), granting property wealthy districts transportation aid previously not allowed, allotting money for fast growth districts that open new schools requiring additional overhead, and ensuring the Teacher Retirement Pension System is actuarily sound to make the profession more attractive for the long term. Consistent communication educated the community on these issues, and BISD received strong support from residents who traveled to Austin to meet with numerous key legislators, while hundreds of others made phone calls and wrote letters of support. HB 3 addressed all of BISD’s main priorities, tremendously impacting the 2019-20 budget. According to Dr. Thomas Price, BISD Superintendent, “With the old funding formula we would have had enough money to open our two new schools this August (Herff Elementary and Voss Middle School) and hire only some of the teachers needed to cover our enrollment growth of 450 new students. House Bill 3’s formula generates an additional $4.5 million for us.” THE IMPACT OF HB 3 ON BISD IS AS FOLLOWS: REFORMING ROBIN HOOD: For the first time in 15 years, BISD will pay NO recapture to the state in 2019-20 and 2020-21. This allows locally paid taxes to remain in Boerne.

PROPERTY TAX RELIEF: BISD will reduce its Maintenance and Operations tax rate from $1.04 to $.97, or about $260 to the average homeowner, saving taxpayers $5 million district wide. Beginning in 2020-21, any revenue increase in appraised value growth beyond 2.5% will be used to further reduce the M&O tax rate. Dr. Price expects the M&O tax rate to be as low as $.87 within four or five years, adding, “The legislature has committed to making up the difference with state funding as local rates are reduced. We will hold them to that commitment.” COMPENSATION: A priority was to make teacher pay more competitive. According to Dr. Elaine Howard, BISD Chief Human Resources Officer, a thorough study was conducted last year by the Texas Association of School Boards comparing BISD’s pay scale with neighboring districts. While BISD was slightly ahead of Hill Country districts, it lagged behind many others in Bexar County. HB 3 mandated that 30% of additional revenue be allocated to employee pay, with 75% of that going to teachers, or $1490 for the average BISD teacher. The 2019-20 budget grants teachers a 5% raise ($2600 average), the highest in the San Antonio region, and an additional $500 bonus for those with five years or more of classroom experience. This totals over $3000 for most teachers, more than double the state mandate. All other employees received raises of 4%, or twice what they received last year. Dr. Price noted that the past two years’ raises (cumulative 9%) attempt to make up for 2011-2014 when no raises were given due to tight budgets, cutbacks in state education funding and increasing recapture payments. SAFETY AND SECURITY: Physical improvements were completed this summer. All schools will now have enclosed entry vestibules and safety cameras. BISD added a Coordinator of Security, Hector Hernandez, a former School Resource Officer (SRO) at Boerne High School for 18 years. Hernandez stated, “We view school safety holistically. We have increased our number of SRO’s, counselors, and have

adopted a ‘See Something, Say Something’ program that has provided us valuable information. We want to enhance safety and security while maintaining a welcoming school environment.” CAPITAL EQUIPMENT: In previous years due to tight budgets, equipment replacement was put on the back burner. Dr. Price said, “We are finalizing an IT, Transportation and Extra Curricular equipment replacement cycle that will allow us to plan appropriately for the future. We will present to the board in October a supplemental budget plan with funds left unallocated in the 201920 budget.” Overall, BISD is very grateful for HB 3 and appreciates the support of our community and local legislators. Our students and taxpayers will benefit from this progress as we work to maintain and improve excellence in BISD. For more information, www.boerneisd.net/ Page/5218.

GARNER HOMES

DOUBLE THE FUN

Lisa and Robert Bowling had such an enjoyable experience having Garner Homes design and build a home for them at Cordillera Ranch, they decided to do it again — right next door.

By Dan R. Goddard :: Photography by Chris Mendiola

Both houses have similar layouts — four bedrooms, four-and-a-half baths, a study, dining room, large kitchen, family room, a flexible game room and a master suite with workout space. Along with a pool and three-car garage with a workshop, there’s a special “bunkroom” for grandkids at both houses. But while the first house began as a Mediterranean/ Hill Country design, it gradually morphed into what builder Trey Garner calls a “transitional style.” The second house is more modern, with cleaner lines and big windows to bring in views of the beautiful Hill Country. “We are those crazy people that actually love the entire building process,” Lisa says. “We like everything about it, and Garner Homes made it so pleasurable. Even while moving into our first house,

66 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

we told Trey we would be back. We knew we wanted to do it again. The decision was nothing about our first house. We loved the first house. In fact, it made it a little difficult to move forward with building again because we feared the ‘What if?’ we didn’t like the second one as much? That part was a little scary. However, when the lot next door came up for sale, we knew this was our opportunity. As much as we knew we would enjoy building again, we would have never given up our awesome Hill Country view.” “The Bowlings really enjoyed the first project,” Trey Garner says. “They loved getting into the details, were decisive, and enjoyed seeing the progress during their visits from where they lived in Southeast Texas. They joked a lot about not wanting the project to end because

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 67

they were having a good time. I had a feeling they weren’t really joking at all. Given the relationship we had, it was no surprise when they called about the lot next door, ready to start a new adventure.” With a degree in Construction Science from Texas A&M University, Garner founded Garner Homes in 1998 and is now a Preferred Builder at Cordillera Ranch. The Bowlings were introduced to Garner, who then brought architect Jim Terrian of J Terrian Designs and the rest of the Garner team into the project. “It just felt right from the very beginning,” Lisa says. “You can just tell when it’s a good fit. Trey and Jim started with us from the beginning. They actually walked lots with us to help us find the perfect location for our

68 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

first home. The lot was a huge decision. They helped us understand about elevations, house orientation and all else important to a successful house building project.” Garner Homes uses a home building portal site to keep clients informed on all details of the building project — selections, budget and time frame. All conversations are recorded so everything is documented. “I loved the portal,” Lisa says. “We built the first house while living in Southeast Texas so we felt very much in the loop with the portal, phone calls, texts and pictures. It allowed us to come and go all while knowing our house was moving forward with a team of professionals.” The first project Garner designed and built for the Bowlings leaned toward Mediterranean — but as the design progressed, details were modernized. “The end result was one of the first of our projects that I would refer to as transitional,” Garner says. “We had some arches and interior stone walls, travertine floors and earthy tones throughout, but Robert and Lisa did a great job of making selections with surfaces and fixtures that could really work with a lot of aesthetics.” With the second house, the Bowlings had a clearer idea of what they needed. “We worked hard on our new house design,” Lisa says. “We had a huge advantage the second time around because we knew exactly how we used our house in Cordillera. We found people really entertain in their homes much more here than anywhere else we had lived previously. Again, it was important to hit a good balance of space for family and entertaining, but also something that felt right for just

the two of us. While our two houses are very different in style, we definitely repeated some of our favorite features.” The master suite is a unique element of the first house that worked so well the concept was repeated in the new house. Because Robert is often up and out of the house early for work, the Bowlings wanted to create a true suite — living, sleeping, bathing — within the master area. The bedroom itself is not a large space, but it opens into a smaller living area with a built-in coffee bar and a fitness area. The end result not only accommodates Robert’s schedule, but made a lot of sense because they’re empty nesters. This allowed them in the first house, and then again with the new one, to shut down an entire half of the house that they only use when their family or friends are visiting. The Bowlings wanted huge, floor-to-ceiling windows framing beautiful Hill Country views. “Style wise, the two houses are very different,” Garner says. “But since the Bowlings bought the lot next door to their first, the view was just as — if not more — special. In both projects, we were very intentional with windows and views. We wanted to capture as much as we possibly could from every room.” The stars of the second Bowling project are the windows. The entire back wall of the house is glass, accomplished with a series of aluminum-clad wood windows and doors, recessed into the floor and towering to 10-foot heights for a “floor-to-ceiling” look. “You’ll see these windows throughout the house,” Garner says. “But the first ones a visitor will notice are those in the breakfast space, which created a jewelbox effect, especially after the lighting was installed.” They decided to build a one-story the second time with the exception of the grandkids’ bunkroom and a walk-in attic. The second house is more open than the first; actually, it is one large area for entertaining groups with special ceilings to define the different spaces. An expanded outdoor living area with both covered and uncovered spaces has several sitting and dining areas plus two fire pits. They can open the sliding doors and double the entertaining space. One challenge with the open floor plan was clearly designating and separating each space from the next. “We wanted

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 69

to set apart each area without creating an obstruction of the view, but we also wanted to be careful to not create too much noise,” Garner says. “I’m very happy with the end result, which were cloud-like structures made from drywall, but each is distinguished from the next with wood inlay or indirect lighting accents.” The Bowlings worked with the interior designers to select weathered oak flooring that adds warmth but works well with the contemporary color palette. The end result is a lot of surprises in textures and finishes that cohere with the general aesthetic of the project. “We’ve been fortunate to get to work in a lot of different

70 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

styles,” Garner says. “The traditional styles in the Hill Country and Mediterranean-influenced homes are still in demand, and we’re honored to get to put our spin on those. Of course, ‘transitional’ has become a major topic in our design meetings and we’ve, I believe, defined this word very well with the help of Jim Terrian.” GARNER HOMES

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER By Sara Garcia

The Cordillera Ranch Property Owner’s Association (CRPOA) is working to be more communicative regarding our neighborhood. Ongoing, we’d like to provide reminders, information, programs or opportunities to help our Property Owners with subjects they might not be familiar with or need reminding of. Our rapid rate of home construction in turn brings many new residents, both two-legged and four-legged. We have a lot of animal lovers out here, but all residents may not be aware of the community’s effort to keep pets and people safe. In accordance with Cordillera Ranch Covenants and Design Guidelines, all pets must be contained by a fence or leashed while outside a fence. Unfortunately, some

pets were born to run and escape the comfy confines of their home or yard. Our residents play a large role in identifying your pet and getting it back to you quickly and safely. But we need your help. Years ago, Cordillera Ranch resident Jay Pennington created a database of pets in our community. In that tradition, and to ensure your pet’s safety and ease of identification by others, AND in

recognition of National Responsible Dog Ownership Day on Saturday, September 21 (yes, there’s a day for that), we strongly urge you to register your pet and get a Cordillera Ranch tag. For each pet, simply email the following information to Jay@jay-pennington. com: Pet owner’s name(s), address, home phone number, cell phone number(s) and email address(es). Also include the pet’s name, breed, sex, size (small, medium, large), whether the pet has a chip implanted, the pet’s primary color or markings (unusual markings/scars/look), the color/style of collar that the pet wears and the desired tag size (regular or small). The information will be added to the database, Jay will drop off tag(s) at the Real Estate Sales Office in the new Cordillera Ranch Visitors Center, and the pet owner will be contacted to pick up tag(s) at their convenience. Let’s work together to ensure the safety of our pets and residents. Feel free to contact the CRPOA about this or other subjects at 830.336.3501 or email us at crpoa@cordilleraranch.com.
