WELCOME

Texas is steeped in tradition. As we enter this season of time-honored traditions, it’s timely to share stories of those passed down along with some new. Our featured residents, Cindy and Larry Taylor, share traditions from their multi-generational Texas lineage: appreciation for the outdoors, cooking, time with family and friends, community service and volunteerism. Residents since 2002, you must consider the Taylor’s “pioneers” of Cordillera Ranch, evident through long-time involvement in many of this community’s clubs, activities, social scene and giving of themselves. You don’t get any more Texan than that! The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch continue to develop programs that have become traditions and are sure to endure. Much anticipated weekly gatherings at Gold Rush, Friday nights on the patios, spectacular wine dinners and culinary events along with more seasonally festive activities like our Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s related celebrations are becoming traditions in their own rite. And new opportunities through the expansion of facilities like The Lodges reckon back to a simpler, regenerative heritage on the land that became Cordillera Ranch. Seasonal traditions in the area are decades old and attract thousands searching for the holiday spirit through festivals and gatherings in the quaint, small town of Boerne and the enchanting Texas Hill Country, both with their storybook-like seasonal holiday settings. So, enjoy the read and know that all of us at Cordillera Ranch wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas and happy, healthy and prosperous 2020 full of long traditions held and new traditions being formed.

STAFF PROFILE

SUSIE PHILLIPS

Equestrian Club Manager 919.422.2256 :: sphillips@cordilleraranch.com HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR OCCUPATION? I was raised in a small town on a century-old farm in Jacksonville, NC, that was originally a land grant from the King of England in the 1800s. I come from a long line of farmers. I have always had a fondness for animals—an attribute I get from my mother, Cora Scott. George, my father, taught me how to put in a good day’s work. When I was 10, my parents made a deal with me that if I saved up some money, I could have my own horse. I saved $600 from odd jobs working at a local stable for two years. The day after Christmas, on my 12th birthday, I held my parent’s feet to the fire. By the end of the day, I owned a 23-year-old palomino named Jess. I was hooked… ever since that first horse, there was no turning back, and I have owned many and turned my passion into a job. WHAT PAST WORK HISTORY PREPARED YOU FOR THE CLUBS? For several years I worked for a former Olympian from Canada, Gilles Casavant. He taught me how to treat customers and how important it is to buy the right horse. My experience with him encouraged me to start my own equine retail business called A Bit More — an upscale retail clothing and tack business that included a mobile retail showroom. I had an established presence at horse shows nationwide and developed relationships with major players in the industry. After moving to Texas and marrying my husband, I worked as the equine manager for Wheeler’s Feed and Outfitters, providing my expertise on feed, medical supplies and equine clothing. Always needing to be hands-on with horses, I worked for In The Irons, a local riding facility that concentrates on riding lessons, youth camps and boarding. After seeing my work at In The Irons, the owner of Spring Creek Stables offered me the GM position at his facility. Throughout these chapters of my career, I have also maintained my own breeding program and have ridden horses competitively. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE? There have been so many I will do my best to narrow it down. I have a trophy case of awards for the performance of show horses that I have bred and shown. I have sold homegrown horses from my equine breeding program in high five figures that have won world titles. I have transformed a failing equine business into a profitable, preferred equine destination. But the most rewarding is witnessing an autistic child that rarely smiles have a big grin on his face when he rides and is in control of a 1000-pound animal. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE? I am facing it now. The history, culture and tradition of Cordillera Ranch would lead one to believe that equine operations would be a bigger, more important part of the Ranch than it is today. It will probably never rival golf but it should be more than it is. The challenge is to determine what it should be and develop a strategy and plan to get it there.

28 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WORKING AT CORDILLERA RANCH? The western lifestyle! I’m very excited to work for Cordillera Ranch. When I look at the current Equestrian Center, it looks like a yearling that holds tremendous promise. All the makings are here for success… the good bloodlines are here… now it’s simply time, dedication and hard work that will allow us to achieve something we can be proud of. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND INTERESTS? I enjoy travel, hunting and fishing with my husband, Jason Phillips, out west in the Big Bend area, New Mexico and Colorado. I love visiting my two children, Cody and Ellie, at college. FAVORITE QUOTE Life is short, ride your best horse first! ANYTHING THAT WOULD SURPRISE OTHERS ABOUT YOURSELF? I got a BS degree in Social Science from Campbell University and worked as a caseworker for NC Child Protective Services. During my fifth year, I received a domestic disturbance call one night. Knowing the child at the residence, I rushed to respond without calling for backup. The disturbance turned into a lifethreatening incident. Everybody, including the child, survived without injury. Within 60 days, I elected to resign my caseworker career and get into the horse business.

MEMBER EVENTS

EVENINGS TO HONOR

EXCEPTIONAL GUESTS The Speaker Series at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch is a new and engaging program that will bring influential guests who have made significant contributions to their professions for an evening of casual and open conversation. The Club was honored to host Texas football journalist, Dave Campbell, for the first Speaker Series event on September 10. For those “not-in-the-know,” Dave’s biannual Texas Football magazine covering high school football, college football and recruiting all across the Lone Star State for over six decades has given him legendary status for Texas football fans everywhere! It has been said that “nobody has impacted Texas high school football more without calling a play or taking a snap than Dave Campbell.” Members enjoyed a personal meet-and-greet book signing with Dave prior to dinner followed by a fireside chat commentary regarding some of his memorable Texas football stories as well as his early beginnings launching his biannual Texas Football magazine. Although Dave no longer is involved with the magazine, the magazine lives on today as a “must read” for anyone in the Texas football world.

THE CLUBS OF CORDILLERA RANCH WELCOME SCOTT PELLEY Thursday, November 7, 2019 Scott Pelley, former CBS Evening News anchor and the most decorated correspondent in the history of 60 Minutes, revisits the stories and people that have stirred him, changed him, and stayed with him in his engaging new memoir: Truth Worth Telling: A Reporter’s Search for Meaning in the Stories of Our Time. In his book, Pelley, a Cordillera Ranch Club member, recalls and reflects upon some of his most dramatic, moving and inspiring encounters in the field and how they exemplify what is good about humanity both in America and abroad. In his nearly five decades as a journalist, he has witnessed the best and the worst, reporting on breaking news around the globe and at home in

30 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019

the U.S. Along the way he has met many extraordinary people who exemplify all that is good about humankind and others who have ceded their humanity to ambition, zealotry or madness. Ultimately, Pelley has learned that it is those who have found the purpose of their own lives amid the vortex of historic events who supply inspiration for us all. “Pelley’s narratives are a RIVETING blend of investigative reporting, color commentary, and personal reminiscence; they make a convincing case for why journalism still matters.” — Publishers Weekly “Scott Pelley’s Truth Worth Telling is A MONUMENT TO JOURNALISTIC EXCELLENCE. In riveting prose Pelley recounts how covering the 9/11 tragedy and Middle Eastern wars has forever changed his world perspective. His personal stories about the enduring power of the First Amendment, 60 Minutes, and U.S. Presidential history are priceless. Highly recommended!” — Douglas Brinkley, author of Cronkite 5:30 to 6:30pm: Cocktails and Book Signing 6:30pm: Dinner and Program $39.99++, includes a three-course dinner *Books will be available for pre-order Advance reservations are required and can be made through the Club receptionist at 830.336.9000 or receptionist@ cordilleraranch.com

On display will be rare collective pieces from the personal collection of legendary Texas Ranger Joaquin Jackson (1935-2016), including his personal inventoried Winchester Model 94 Carbines collection. In addition, artwork may be purchased at each event.

At the Clubs’ first event on October 27, “A Night with Thomas Arvid,” America’s preeminent painter of wine discussed his passion for collecting both art and wine and how on each canvas he strives to capture the pleasure of a life well-lived. Art Business News (May, 2003) credits the self-taught artist with “launching a major art trend…” with his oversized still life compositions of wine and the casual rituals surrounding it, using lush colors and skillful application. Guests were entertained with a live painting demonstration while appropriately enjoying food and wine pairings.

Making Time for the

IMPORTANT THINGS with residents Cindy and Larry Taylor By Cheryl Van Tuyl Jividen :: Photography by Mark Humphries

Larry and Cindy Taylor grew up in the Lone Star state; he in Southeast Texas; wife Cindy in Liberty, the third oldest city in Texas, located between Houston and Beaumont. While their fathers were friends, the two didn’t meet until working on committees for the Trinity Valley Exposition Rodeo. It was a fast love story — they were married just two months later when Larry’s job with Mississippi Chemical Company relocated him to Arkansas. Texas quickly came calling to return with a job opportunity for Larry in the petroleum industry in Houston. “I made the move from the ‘fertilizer’ business to the ‘oil’ business in 1977 when my best friend and former college roommate asked if I would be interested in moving back to Texas. I found out quickly that the marketing and logistics of petroleum products was very similar to selling and moving fertilizer. Back in the late 70’s and early/

38 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019

mid 80’s, the business was ‘booming’ in Houston. Petroleum trading companies, as well as those on the refining side of the business, were looking for people. I went to work for Coastal States Refining & Marketing in 1980,” says Larry. “At the time, Coastal was in a big lawsuit involving one of their subsidiaries that marketed natural gas to many Texas municipalities. Coastal ended up losing the litigation, and the other parties in the suit were awarded the gas company for their damages. The company was renamed ‘Valero,’ and a former Coastal employee — Bill Greehey — was named CEO. Valero exited the natural gas business after a while and got into oil refining.” “We were ready to return to Texas!” Cindy remembers. The move provided career opportunities and the proximity to family. Cindy worked until they moved to Atascocita, when she became a full-time homemaker. “I grew up in a home that instilled community service and volunteering at a young age,” says Cindy. Her parents were very involved in church and community activities. “I remember Daddy

put a sticker on the phone for Mother, “’JUST SAY NO.’ He didn’t abide by it either. Their calendar by the phone was always full!” Her parent’s example shaped Cindy’s penchant for service and volunteerism. “I honestly don’t remember a time that I wasn’t organizing or helping with something.” After daughter Katie was born, Cindy’s volunteerism grew. “I was a room mom forever,” she says. One of the best things to come from volunteering she says are the friendships she’s made, “In Atascocita and Humble, I had a great group of friends. Most all had daughters the same age, so we did lots of activities together. One for all and all for one helping with whatever another needed help doing.” Over the years Cindy would be the PTO President, and log more than a decade of various school volunteer service. She was also President of the local chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha Alumnae and co-chair of recruitment for the Humble Panhellenic. Cindy is a former member of the Junior League of North Harris County. She was a member, along with Katie, of the Lake Houston Chapter of the National Charity League, donating many hours of community service, serv-

Larry’s ancestry is five generations deep with ancestors settling in Liberty and Hardin counties of Southeast Texas as part of the great Irish immigration movements in the 1800’s. A trio of relatives served with William Travis at the Alamo. Cindy’s lineage had an ancestor leave Tennessee with Davy Crockett to Texas. Though too young to fight at the Alamo, he was assigned to the quartermaster to hunt for food for the Army, serving in the Republic of Texas Army 1838 to the early 1840s. Cindy’s ancestry provided membership and the opportunity to serve with the Daughters of the American Revolution in various capacities and fundraising activities. Networking led Larry to the start of his Valero career. “I had made some very close friends with some of the people who worked there. So, after a couple of stints with a couple other trading and marketing firms in Houston, including Enron Oil Trading & Transportation, I was approached by Valero in late 2001 and offered a job in San Antonio.” The timing and location were ideal, says Larry. “Our daughter had just started school at UT Austin, and Cindy and I both thought that moving to the Hill Country would be a dream come true. I worked for Valero Marketing & Supply until early 2007 when Valero Energy spun their MLP off. Mr. Greehey became Chairman of NuStar Energy, and although I was not part of the MLP group, he ‘invited’ me to move over to NuStar. It was very difficult to turn that ‘invitation’ down. I worked at NuStar until my retirement in January 2017. I cannot think of another industry that I would have rather made a career of than the oil businesses. The friends made and the many truly great experiences I’ve been afforded are priceless.” A year into working at Valero the Taylors got their first Labrador Retriever — a black lab female they named Pearl — from a

co-worker. A second yellow female, Gracie, was purchased from Pastor Matt Hagee. “Gracie became the matriarch of our lab family and lived a long life, as did Pearl. She had two litters of puppies and we kept two males from the first and named them Boone and Gus,” says Larry, who explains how their pack came to be. Gus, who was trained locally, went on to sire several litters and of one of those litters they kept two females, Stella and Weezy. Their trainer was located in Katy, Texas, now relocated to Hearne, Texas, and he would also train two of Stella’s puppies, Gracie Pearl and Woodrow. Gracie Pearl has become an outstanding retriever and unfortunately, Woodrow was sadly lost to cancer as a yearling. Recently Stella birthed another litter, “Our latest and her last,” Larry says. “I have always been an avid outdoorsman. While living in the Houston area, we maintained a second home on the west end of Galveston Island. At that time, I primarily concentrated on inshore and offshore fishing,” says Larry. “After moving to the Hill Country, I’ve become more of an avid hunter — primarily upland birds.” Larry has the joy of seeing his dogs in action on hunts. “I have been blessed to have had and still have some great ones.” And it’s a hobby he nurtures. “Aside from being able to spend a lot of time chasing birds all over Texas, I do manage to travel to Central and South America at least once a year to hunt with a group of guys. When it’s not bird season, I am avid about shooting sporting clays, a sport that the whole family enjoys,” says Larry, a lifetime Member of the National Sporting Clay Association, Moving to Cordillera Ranch in 2002, the couple relishes the opportunity to share their home. “We enjoy casual entertaining.

Whether it’s Larry’s hunting friends, work friends or just those who come for a weekend in the Hill Country, we love to relax, enjoy food with friends and laugh,” says Cindy, a passionate devotee of Southern food. Her specialties include deviled eggs, pimento cheese finger sandwiches, chicken spaghetti, Texas Trash and seasoned oyster crackers. “I love to can and share the bounty as gifts.” At the First Methodist Church Fall Festival in Liberty, she was known for her Fredericksburg peach preserves. Cindy explains their early days at Cordillera Ranch, “We moved to Cordillera Ranch not knowing anyone in Boerne or even San Antonio — unlike some who move here now because they have friends here or knew people that they’d worked with overseas that lived here or know people in the area. It was also different for those of us who no longer had children at home. We had lost that contact with others because of school activities.” She recalls the beginning of the social clubs, “There were four monthly activity groups: Bunco, Book Club, Men’s Group and a Women’s Fellowship Group.” She’s been a part of the Cordillera Ranch Ladies Social Club since, being the Bunco Leader “back in the day” to currently serving as the Ladies Social Club President for the past 13 years. She’s organized Ladies Socials, Cordillera Ranch Holiday Markets, Parties in the Park, Memorial Day and Fourth of July Pool Parties, Care Packages for the Troops and a number of other neighborhood activities. She’s also co-chaired the Cordillera Ranch Shindig. Cindy’s local contributions also include serving as President of the Boerne Area Alumnae and several years as the Recruitment Chair. She volunteers at events for the Bergheim Volunteer Fire

Department and provides lunch to the Christian Women’s Job Corp. Larry’s include serving on the Advisory Board of the San Antonio Salvation Army for a decade and the fundraising committee and sporting clay tournaments for the Alamo Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Their daughter, Katie, is the Mansion Administrator of the Texas Governor’s Mansion, where Cindy is honored to be able to help decorate the Mansion for Christmas each year. She and Larry, along with a few friends, volunteered to prepare and serve the very first crawfish boil held there when Governor and Mrs. Abbott hosted a staff appreciation event following the close of the first legislative session of his administration. The last two years have been a welcome next chapter, says Larry, “Being retired is pretty cool! I am fortunate to have many of the friends that I made in the industry retired as well and we’re able to get together often to hunt, fish, shoot clays, play golf, or whatever suits our fancy at the time. We usually schedule a lunch at least once a month to visit and catch up. I also join in on golf outings around the area with some of the guys as well as shoot clays in various charity events.” Cindy loves taking road trips with Katie and serving as tour guide when guests visit. Her philanthropic work hasn’t waned. “I have been very blessed in my life and want to pay it forward and give of my time and talents to help others. Knowing that I’ve helped someone or a charitable cause in some small way is rewarding.” Once the co-owner of a needlework shop, decades ago, Cindy cross-stitched a quote that aptly fits the Taylors, “You always have time for the things you put first.”

GOLF

LONE STAR

CLASS

Cordillera Ranch resident and 2016 PGA Champion JimmyWalker was one of five honorees recently inducted into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame. Walker, who starred at Canyon High School in New Braunfels and then for Baylor University before turning professional in 2001, joined the 2019 Hall of Fame class of inductees in the professional golfer category. Walker’s pro career resume is quite impressive — nine professional wins including the 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey, a two-time Ryder Cup participant (2014 and 2016) and a member of the 2015 President’s Cup Team. Joining Walker in the 2019 Texas Golf Hall of Fame inductee class were Houstonian Mike Booker (Amateur Player); Dallas’ Fin Ewing III (Lifetime Achievement); Preston Trail Director of Golf Cameron Doan (Golf Professional / Teacher); and Fort Worth’s Shady Oaks Country Club (Texas Registry of Historic Golf Courses). “This is pretty cool, and when I got the call [about the induction] I thought I was still young at 40 and told them I wasn’t done yet,” Walker joked. “It’s an incredible honor to be a part of a class with these remarkable individuals and Shady Oaks.” The 2019 class was honored with a formal induction ceremony at San Antonio Country Club on October 14. Along with the ceremony, each inductee was presented an award and will forever be commemorated with a granite marker on the prestigious Texas Golf Walk of Fame at historic Brackenridge Park Golf

Course. The marker sits right of the 17th hole at Brackenridge and next to the Borglum Studio. Director of Golf Corey Roberson was also enthused by the 2019 Texas Golf Hall of Fame class, as he came to Cordillera Ranch from Preston Trail, where he served and was trained under Cameron Doan since 2012. Roberson credits Doan with helping him become a complete golf professional and teaching him how to enhance the experience for the members at Preston Trail, like Ewing. It is this knowledge and passion for his profession that has made him a perfect fit for Cordillera Ranch. “While serving the world-class membership at Preston Trail, Cameron showed me who I wanted to be, how to achieve it,” Roberson said. “This invaluable experience prepared me for my role at Cordillera Ranch.” This year’s class was the Texas Golf Hall of Fame’s 10th class to be inducted since the Hall’s reconstitution in 2009. Public nominations made online were voted on by living Hall members, the Texas Golf Hall of Fame Board of Directors, and designated Texas golf media members. “2019 has proven to be one of the finest years ever for the Texas Golf Hall of Fame,” said Loren Singletary, its Board Chairman. “The depth of nominees in each category speaks to the significant contributions made to the game of golf by the elected inductees. Their peers have validated their standing in the Texas Golf community, and it is with great pleasure that we extend a hearty congratulations to the 2019 Class of Honorees.”

Pilates Myths…

DEBUNKED By Kristine Cracknell :: Photography by Kelsey Grudle

My favorite thing about my job as a Pilates instructor is empowering clients to find their movement potential through Pilates. It is my job to help my clients find body awareness and connect with the body they are currently living in. It is a privilege and a pleasure to watch the process unfold; there are the lightbulb moments, progressions to pain-free movement, goals being reached and new goals to aim for. Then, there is my second favorite part of being a Pilates instructor. This part happens outside the walls of a Fitness Center. It happens most often when I’m at a social event. Sometimes it happens when sitting next to a stranger on an airplane. Most recently, it happened while I was getting a flu shot. My second favorite thing about being a Pilates instructor is answering the question, “What do you do for a living?” or “Where do you work?” When I tell people that I am a Pilates instructor, I find myself answering a lot of questions about what it is, how you “do” it and why. But more often than not, I find myself debunking common myths out there surrounding Pilates. If you’re still reading this, chances are you may have some questions yourself. In case we don’t run into each other in the grocery store or have the opportunity to chat in the Fitness Center, allow me to set the record straight regarding some common misconceptions about the wonderful world of Pilates.

46 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019

Allow me to set the record straight regarding some common misconceptions about the wonderful world of Pilates.

1. “I HAVE A BAD BACK, KNEE, HIP….” Get the green light from your doctor and then let’s talk. Wear and tear, loss of bone density, childbirth, repetitive faulty movement patterns and traumatic injuries all wreak havoc on our joints and in our spines that can result in pain. Restriction of any kind, both psychological and physical, can lead to compensation patterns. As a result, compensation can lead to malalignment. If you’ve been advised or given clearance by your doctor to begin an exercise program, Pilates can be a safe and effective way to manage the body you’re living in. An experienced, comprehensively certified Pilates instructor can choose appropriately modified workouts with the goal of quality functional movement, increased range of motion and alignment. In a Pilates session, there is no gain from pain. When you walk away from your Pilates workout, the goal is to feel stronger and supported. Carla Northington began Pilates 10 years ago to relieve back pain and says, “My regular workouts on the Pilates reformer have been extremely beneficial in keeping my joints healthy and the muscles around them strengthened. Because of Pilates, I’ve been able to live an active life enjoying all of the things I love doing.”

2. “PILATES IS GEARED TOWARDS WOMEN. I HAVE ZERO FLEXIBILITY. I DON’T OWN YOGA PANTS.” Guys, I get it. But consider this: the same benefits that women gain from a Pilates workout also apply to men. I have yet to meet a male client who did not benefit from a core-focused workout. I’m not talking about the proverbial six pack abs; I’m talking about the deeper, stabilizing muscles that help support the spine. “Pilates was recommended to me after my back surgery eight years ago. It has been key to keeping my back healthy and it’s been a great core-strengthening exercise that’s benefited me in snow-skiing and golf. And it’s harder than it looks; I’d recommend it to anyone wanting to diversify their workouts. It improves flexibility, which is a key in overall strength,” says Charlie Hill, a regular at Pilates. Pilates targets and tones the small, supporting muscles needed whether you’re lifting the heavy weights in the gym or the tired toddler looking up at you. And guys, if your flexibility rivals that of a laptop, the Pilates reformer will meet you where you are. Practicing Pilates on a reformer, when the limbs and torso are being supported and not fighting against gravity, is the perfect place to create better range of motion. Some of the biggest gains in flexibility have come from my male clients. So far, none of them have shown up in yoga pants.

3. “IT’S LIKE A GLORIFIED STRETCH SESSION, RIGHT?” Not exactly. While the stretching components can sometimes feel glorious, the strength piece is equally important and plays a major role in each exercise. In a Pilates session there is a big emphasis on lengthening muscles through eccentric movements (thus, the stretch label.) The reality is that Pilates focuses on both concentric and eccentric muscle contractions which work to achieve a balanced body. Member Erin Walker practices Pilates two to three times per week and says, “I love Pilates because it fits my body type. It’s not stretching but long, lean muscle toning. It’s my happy place. I feel ready to face the day after a workout with Kris on the reformer. My body and mind feel stronger after.”

Ready to discover more truths about Pilates? Group reformer and mat classes are offered Monday through Friday. Check the group exercise calendar for class descriptions and times. Private sessions and/or consultations are required before joining a group reformer class. Private sessions can be set up by contacting one of our certified Pilates instructors at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch.

Planning a special event can be as enjoyable as the party — the journey to your destination — if you’re working with the talented and professional staff at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. It’s no secret that Cordillera Ranch is a special place to live, and celebrations centered on the natural beauty and unique features of the property become exceptional events with one-ofa-kind experiences reflecting each individual client’s personality. And while weddings might first come to mind, the celebration possibilities are endless. The Ranch provides a perfect venue for corporate outings. If you choose to entertain in your home on the Ranch, the Clubs’ staff can cater a party to fit any theme you can dream of. Or simply order a complete meal to-go when family and friends are visiting.

CORPORATE OUTINGS Cordillera Ranch is an excellent place to host company meetings and team-building activities as the unique environment allows companies to conduct business while enjoying all of the

amenities on the Ranch. A recent member’s corporate outing provided their guests with overnight accommodations at the new Lodges so they could be on property or go into Boerne with the use of the Clubs’ Mercedes Vans. They had daily meetings with catered meals in the private dining room, team building activities in the afternoon, evening cocktails fireside, and dinner in the private dining room. Multiple meeting spaces accommodate any group size and can be combined with an exhilarating clay pigeon shoot, a relaxing round of golf or trail ride, a kayaking trip on the river or any other activities available on the Ranch. Add in food and beverage options, whether casual or up-scale, customized merchan-

dise and luxury lodging, and you have a world-class meeting and sporting event to entertain and motivate your employees. “The Cordillera Ranch staff organized a perfect day allowing guests to pick between golf, sporting clays, etc., followed by a great cocktail sunset and dinner in the Cabana Grill. I was so impressed with the staff’s organizational efficiency plus great food!” — Mr. David Sanders

HOME PARTIES

Whatever the occasion, entertaining in your home can be a beautiful and stress-free experience. The Clubs’ staff can cater to any size event at a member’s home within the Ranch, providing staffing and equipment for food and beverage, set-up, service and clean-up, and can assist in outsourcing extra rentals, tents, tables, floral, etc. Planning begins with a one-on-one meeting where Chef Isaac advises on creating the perfect menu for the event, coordinators take care of the other details, and before you know it, you have enjoyed your own lovely party and your home looks as perfect and clean at the end of the evening as it did when the Clubs’ staff arrived. “When we decided to host a holiday party in our new home, there was no question that we wanted to work with the experienced and professional event staff and culinary team at The Club. From our very first contact with Amanda, to planning the

details and menu, to the final cleanup at the end of the party, every aspect was perfectly executed and exceeded our expectations!” — Joanne and Aldon Williams

CATERING TO-GO With the holidays approaching, or simply any time of year when friends and family gather, the convenience of a delicious, prepared meal from the Clubs’ culinary team is a welcome treat. It’s as easy as selecting your meal and picking it up, hot and

ready to serve. Packaged in disposable containers, the meals can easily go straight to your table, or you can choose to transfer to your own holiday platters. Engage your guests in an event customized from every thoughtful detail down to each bite of a perfectly paired food and wine dinner or themed event. Whether your gathering is a grand affair or an intimate dinner party, an office luncheon or other private event, Cordillera Ranch, or your own beautiful home, is the perfect venue. THANKSGIVING DINNERS TO-GO By Graham House

For many of us, the meaning of Thanksgiving includes feasting, four-day weekends, football games, floats and family reunions. The “first Thanksgiving,” however, was neither a feast nor a holiday, but a simple gathering. Following the Mayflower’s arrival at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620, the Pilgrims suffered the loss of 46 of their original 102 colonists. With the help of 91 Indians, the remaining Pilgrims survived the bitter winter and yielded a bountiful harvest in 1621. In celebration, a traditional English harvest festival, lasting three days, brought the Pilgrims and natives to unite in a “thanksgiving” observance. Today we celebrate the family time together with a traditional “Thanksgiving” meal where families integrate their own customs while preserving that which they hold most precious. Whether to gather in unity, teach the young in retold stories or prepare our hearts for gratitude, the meal has become the center point to draw us together.

Family time is precious so don’t waste your time cooking in the kitchen on Thanksgiving. You can pre-order Thanksgiving dinners to-go through The Club, choosing between a traditional Oven-Roasted Turkey Dinner, Brown Sugar Fall-Spiced Glazed Ham Dinner or the Herb-Roasted Prime Rib Dinner. The Clubs’ Bake Shop will make beautiful Cherry Spiced Apple and traditional Pumpkin pies to accompany your meal. Thanksgiving Dinners To-Go sell out fast. Place your order with the Club Receptionist at 830.336.9000 by Sunday, November 24, and your complete meal will be ready for pick-up on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 9:30am to Noon, with pick-up times scheduled every 15 minutes. CELLAR CLUB

From Wine and Beyond…

By Jeffrey Cohen

Happy Holidays! This is always my favorite time of year. The weather is changing, the fall harvests have arrived and the wines have suddenly changed from “Patio Pounders” — wines enjoyed in extreme heat — to Bubbles and Big Reds. Speaking of Bubbles and Big Reds, our Holiday Wine Extravaganza is approaching. If you have not attended this in the past, it is a can’t miss holiday tasting that includes light bites and 48 various wines, some sparkling and some big reds. It is slotted for November 26 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Don’t forget to make a dinner reservation for after the event. Most leave happy and hungry. Before I tell you about an experience that I had recently, I want to thank all the members for their great support of the Wine Program and its many events. Firstly, we had Kayla Trevino of Hahn Estates come to enhance the Women of Wine “Fall Comfort Food” event. She eloquently talked of the regions that Hahn cultivates and farms as well as the different lines of wines that they carry. The ladies were able to try the inaugural vintages of their Arroyo Seco Chardonnay and Pinot Noir along with Smith & Hook Red and Cab, finishing off with Boneshaker Zin. Chef Isaac and his team demonstrated a crowd favorite: Butternut Squash Soup, Braised Short Ribs and a very versatile Pastry Cream. Next, we introduced a “Family Style” Wine Dinner showcasing Ferrari-Carano wines. Chef Isaac’s team sent platters and platters of food for every course

50 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019

that were passed around the long table and magnificently paired with the wines. It was a comfortable, casual atmosphere! Jaime Ramirez from Ferrari-Carano spoke enthusiastically and everybody was captivated by the story behind the Ferrari Family and the vineyards. He even invited everybody out to Sonoma for a special tour. If you find yourself headed that direction, I will pass out his contact information. We also enjoyed a Champagne Seminar from Ruinart. Gina Livingston, San Antonio’s foremost Champagne expert and the Brand Ambassador of Ruinart, Moét, Krug and Veuve Clicquot, was the guest speaker and told the story behind Ruinart, the beginnings of Champagne in general and took a lot of questions and answers. Lastly, we had the great opportunity to have Rianna Mondavi and her husband join us as the guest speakers of the Charles Krug Wine Dinner. Growing up in Napa Valley, she had amazing history and stories that only she, a Mondavi, could have amassed. Of course, the culinary team hit yet another grand slam with the food and pairings. As you can see, there are numerous events to attend and I assure you we will keep them coming.

NOW FOR MY GREAT EXPERIENCE! I started out one day like any other. I had a slew of vendors coming to taste me on wines on this day. For some, that might sound like exciting, however it does get arduous at times. Nevertheless, I was introduced to a supplier from Australia. I always try to keep an open mind and not preconceive what is going to be shown, and with that being said, she started me on a glass of sparkling wine from TASMANIA… I was absolutely blown away. This sparkling wine was vibrant with tight bubbles. I got honeysuckle and citrus off the nose with the taste of nougat and a nice bit of nuttiness. It was a fraction of the cost of French Champagne as well. Staying in Australia, we then progressed to a Dry Riesling from Eden Valley. It had the nose of petrol just like many Rieslings from Germany and Alsace. As soon as it touched my tongue, I couldn’t help but notice the lemon-lime fruit along with herbs such as rosemary and sage. What a superstar! There were another five or six wines that we tasted so I will limit to just one more — Yalumba’s Samuel Collection Bush Vine Grenache. This wine had the nose of the Gamay Grape which is found in Beaujolais, south of Burgundy. The smell is like a mix between cranberries and Cherry Kool-Aid — the best way for me to describe it. On the palate it is richly textured, fleshy, round and supple, with a cranberry tartness and fresh-picked Washington cherry that finished velvety. Some might be asking why this experience was great. My answer is simple. As I was tasting, especially these three wines, I knew that this was a near flawless, out of the ordinary, economical and perfect pairing for anybody’s Thanksgiving feast. Again, Happy Holidays and I wish you all to have a remarkable season filled with friends, family and long-lasting memories! See you at the Club… Jeffrey Cohen is the Wine Specialist at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. He can be reached at jcohen@cordilleraranch.com.

OUTDOORS

PASSING ALONG T HE

TEX A S

H U N T IN G H ER ITAGE By Shane Reynolds

Hunting and other forms of outdoor recreation have been a way of life for many Texans since the beginning of this great state. With each new hunting season, hunters flock to the fields and forest in pursuit of their favorite quarry. Whether you hunt to put food on the table, for the excitement of the chase, or for the relaxation and pleasure of being in the field on a crisp autumn day, hunting continues to be a popular pastime for many Texans. I grew up in the Piney Woods of East Texas, hunting with my father and grandfather in a renewable pine forest planted by Kirby Lumber, where my father worked. As we ventured from our vehicle into the pine forest on a cold winter morning in search of whitetail, my father would plant me at the base of a pine tree in a creek bottom before daybreak and say, “Son, don’t leave this spot until I return for you.” For a young boy, this was a challenge. To sit, wait and hope for a deer to cross my path

52 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019

was a life-learning experience that I didn’t realize at the time. I certainly learned patience, perseverance, self-control and many other qualities that hunting bestows upon a youngster. I also vividly remember running through flooded timber with my father and his friends after an evening of roosting wood ducks, which was and is illegal. We were running from a game warden. He was not as familiar with the property as us, and found himself chasing ghosts in the dark as we headed for a vehicle left at a conspicuous location for this exact scenario. This was yet another experience that began my transformation into a lifelong outdoorsman and the development of my own hunting ethics and traditions. In today’s society, unlike years ago, youngsters and adults are involved in numerous other activities which compete for their free time and interests. Expansion of youth athletic programs, home video games and the Internet craze are a few of the activities which occupy a large portion of our children’s time today. State fish and wildlife agencies across the nation have reported significant declines in the number of youth hunters. Here is my call to action! Please consider taking your son, daughter or grandchild on a hunting excursion this year. Texas Parks and Wildlife has implemented special seasons or hunts to

provide youth hunting opportunities. The primary objectives of these special seasons are to encourage youth to participate in hunting and to develop an interest and appreciation for the outdoors and our state’s natural resources. In addition, special youth seasons provide an excellent opportunity for adult mentors, while not carrying a firearm, to provide one-on-one instruction to the youth on various aspects of hunting such as proper gun safety, hunter ethics and the development of hunting skills. All of these seasons are established during times when kids are out of school and when ranches are not crowded with other hunters. As the Outfitter for The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, I have access to a myriad of resources to arrange hunts. From a network of leases and properties to personal relationships with guides for dove, duck, hog, quail, turkey, sandhill crane hunts and a lot more, I can help arrange any type of native or exotic hunt in Texas. I also have a broad range of lease opportunities around Texas, so if you’re looking for a lease, please contact me. Most importantly, I’m available to take your children or grandchildren on hunting trips. If life is too busy or if the thought of organizing a hunting trip is daunting, this is a service offered to our members with the Club. I have enjoyed passing on my hunting heritage to my own children, Penelope and Rio, and the time I spend with them in the field is

some of the best quality time I’ve shared with them. We have some amazing hunters at Cordillera Ranch. If you’ve lived here, you are bound to know a few. Tap into their vast knowledge of experience and ask them what their hunting interests are and how they became hunters. We all have different experiences and interests, but there is a common denominator with us all and that’s the love of getting outdoors with others who share our interests. After living in California for 11 years and constantly educating others on the hunting lifestyle and heritage passed on to me through my family, I often struggled to find the right message to convey. Each fall, I would search to find the source of the feelings that arose, as the crisp morning air and the changing colors of the land and sky stirred something deep in my soul. The most often challenge I had when defending my hunting heritage was “why.’ The books below will help in understanding the “why,” our hunting heritage and our obligation to pass along hunting traditions. They are not a collection of “how to hunt” publications; they’re explorations into the things we know — in our souls — about hunting, but cannot always find the right words to describe them. After reading one or two or three of these you may find it easier to explain why you hunt. • A Sand County Almanac - Aldo Leopold • The Sacred Art of Hunting- James Swan • Heartsblood: Hunting, Spirituality, and Wildness in America - David Peterson • Beyond Fair Chase: The Ethic and Tradition of Hunting - Jim Posewitz If I can be of any assistance to our members, I am always a phone call or email away. TAndHE L O D G E S ! we couldn’t have said it better ourselves. By Brianna Botine :: Photos by Chris Mendiola

The Lodges are open and have proven to be a perfect asset to The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. stay. I want to thank Brianna for her continued follow-up before our arrival, during and after. She made us feel extremely special and was there to help us at every turn. Heidi and I determined that Cordillera was a very special place almost four years ago. Last year, we decided to build and will move in the end of December. The Lodges are just another example of living in a very special place - a resort experience where everyone wants you to be happy - I can tell you, we sure were! — Bob and Heidi We recently had our first stay in the new Lodges, and they exceeded all expectations that we had. As out of town members, we value the convenience of being able to vacation in our own community of friends, family and amenities. The Cordillera staff made us feel very welcome by thinking of all the small details that you appreciate while staying at a luxury hotel. Everything from the handwritten note of welcome, to the Hill Country modern decor, and even a stocked refrigerator of local beverages and water make staying inside the gates very easy and enjoyable. We really enjoyed having a golf cart for all needed transportation. Our car never left its parking spot the entire weekend! We are looking forward to many more stays, and highly recommend it for any other guests! — Ben and Kristen Carter

In addition to The Lodges’ luxurious amenities, our professional staff will help coordinate the perfect stay. We are happy to arrange dinner reservations, outfitter excursions, gift packages for the rooms, airport transportation and, with the holiday season upon us, reservations for Breakfast with Santa.... Private Meet & Greets with Santa himself! These are just some of the many ways we can make our guests’ experiences at The Lodges comfortable and memorable. And our happy guests have shared their appreciation with us: On a recent trip to Cordillera to check on the status of the home we are building with Garner - Heidi and I were fortunate that the new Lodges had just been completed and we would be able to stay there. The experience from beginning to end was truly magnificent. The Lodges are situated very close to the Clubhouse giving you accessibility to the golf club, dining, tennis courts, spa, gym and pools, all within immediate reach using your own personal golf cart that is situated outside your front door. They thought of everything including having our names on the golf cart - attention to detail at every level! The interior of the room was first class with wonderful color selections and amenities that just made you feel good during your entire

We stayed at the new Lodges and were totally impressed with our stay. From check in to check out, it was a very seamless and easy process. The Lodge room and grounds were just fantastic. We would recommend The Lodge to anyone and everyone. We are in the process of renovating our Cordillera home and will be staying at The Lodges again before we get moved in to our place. Great place. — Steve and Deb Trimble The stay at The Lodges was outstanding because of the highend decor, comfort and the wide array of beverages and snacks. We also enjoyed the delicious welcome basket. The additional amenities such as the golf cart allowed for easy access to the golf course, tennis courts, fitness center and clubhouse where we could dine. The staff provided individual attention and support which made the stay even better. We highly recommend The Lodges. — Gary and Beckie Russi With all that The Lodges have to offer, you can trust that you and your guests will have a world-class experience while visiting the Ranch. Lodging reservations can be made one of three ways: on the www.cordilleraranch.com website under “THE LODGES,” the Club’s Mobile App under “LODGING RESERVATIONS” or by contacting the Lodging Concierge, Brianna Botine, at 830.336.9177 or bbotine@ cordilleraranch.com.

THE ELMAX: Rest Home. Ranch. Retreat. 1914

Irvin A. and Marie Oppenheimer of San Antonio purchase 209.1 acres at the north side of the Spring Creek.

1914-1918

The Great War/The Oppenheimers divorce in 1918 and Marie sells the property to Henry and Augusta Graham for $4K. Boerne rest homes open to care for vets with lung disease.

1920 Henry Graham seizes a “golden opportunity” to build a 2.5-story building he would call the “Rainbow Rest Home.” The facility is most likely used as a retreat, rather than a rest home.

1923 The Grahams sell the Rainbow Rest Home to Harvey C. and Alice McCormick for $6K, according to their youngest son, Stuart McCormick. The family kept the Rainbow Rest name.

1929

If you’ve stayed in The Lodges’ first unit, named “The Elmax,” or have seen references to the “The Elmax Ranch” and wondered about its origin, here is a brief history of what would eventually become Cordillera Ranch, and we hope your stay at The Lodges connects you with this history and serves as your retreat. Much of Cordillera Ranch exists on what was once “The Elmax Ranch,” which started with a few hundred acres and ultimately was expanded to encompass 7,200 acres of beautiful, rolling Hill Country land. In the early to mid-1900s, decisions regarding the buying and selling of area land were influenced by marriage, divorce, war and peace. As the following brief timeline notes, the original purpose of what later became The Elmax Ranch headquarters was to serve as a rest home or retreat for veterans returning from World War I along with others needing to escape the daily trials of life (this main structure was called the “Rainbow Rest Home”). One hundred years after the Rainbow Rest Home opened, The Lodges at Cordillera Ranch and its first unit, aptly named “The Elmax,” opens to those seeking a refuge from life’s demands and stress.

58 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019

The McCormicks sell Rainbow Rest to O.D. Douglas, an insurance executive from San Antonio, for $13K. The home was used for recreation, business entertainment and a private retreat.

1942 “J. Ray” and Ethel McDermott buy the Douglas property, plus an additional 450-plus acre adjoining tract. McDermott was a well-known Houston businessman and civic leader, owning one of the largest offshore construction companies in the world. He immediately renames the home “Elmax Ranch,” derived from the names of his wife, Ethel, and their daughter, Maxine. McDermott invested a great deal of money in the ranch. Before his death in 1971, the McDermotts conveyed the ranch to their grandchildren, Carla Hull Northington and Ralph T. Hull. Mr. Hull sold his portion to a development company, which developed it into River Mountain subdivision. Carla Hull Northington (McDermott’s granddaughter) and her husband, Mac, wanted to see their land developed in a manner that preserved the history and character of the original family ranch. The Northington’s sought the advice of their close, long-time friend David Hill, who was in the business of carefully developing master-planned communities. Envisioning a perfect match that would carry out their mission of meticulous and thoughtful preservation, they then formed a joint venture with Hill to develop Cordillera Ranch to carry out this plan. Since 1997, this uniquely crafted partnership has maintained its principle of developing a community that preserves its original character, history and purpose as a retreat.

POA

VISION 2 0 2 0

By Barry Denton

Now, more than 20 years into the life of Cordillera Ranch, the developer’s vision for the community has stood the test of time with the covenants that were set forth back in the late 1990’s helping to sustain values for the past two decades. As we approach the year 2020, the Board and staff have invested significant amounts of time over the past several months to work on improving operations and, in the process, re-evaluate the entire staffing structure of the CRPOA to ensure the organization is set up to succeed for the years ahead.

It became clear in the past couple years that new leadership was needed to achieve the vision. In 2019, there has been a concerted effort by the Board and staff to focus on better communication, friendlier customer service, improved architectural review committee processes, integrating an improved access control system and covenant enforcement. In order to execute on these initiatives, the Board implemented several staff changes during the year that will set the stage for a much-improved property owner association in 2020 and beyond. Sara Garcia has accepted the position as CRPOA General Manager. After joining the CRPOA team in January 2019 as Assistant GM, following a successful real estate and management career, Sara quickly gained the confidence of the CRPOA Board of Directors while earning the respect of her co-workers and prop-

60 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019

erty owners alike. Her positive outlook combined with a “can-do,” solutions-oriented mindset and no-nonsense, fiscally minded management style will serve the Association well for many years to come. Most importantly, Sara is heavily focused on improving the culture of the CRPOA to ensure customer service and communication are improved. The addition of Amy Sloan this past summer brings a disarming, smiling face as the first impression of the CRPOA. Dealing with matters related to your property and community should be a positive interaction. Amy’s positive energy and years in customer service instantly changed the atmosphere of the office. We think you’ll see and notice the difference. Brandi Wright recently transferred to the CRPOA after 14 years with DH Investments, the developer of Cordillera Ranch. Brandi’s familiarity with the community,

accounting background and knowledge of construction will serve the Association well in both bookkeeping and architectural review administration. She rounds out a team eager to serve with a desire to make the CRPOA a model for property association management. In addition to implementing an entirely new management and administrative team during 2019, the new CRPOA administrative offices at the Cordillera Ranch Visitor Center have been a tremendous enhancement to operations. Having sufficient meeting space and office space for the staff to operate and deliver the customer service the Board and residents expect has been a much-needed boost for the team. While none of the above is intended to sound like we’ve addressed the CRPOA challenges and everything is “fixed,” it’s far from it. Steering this ship back in the right direction does not happen overnight, and we recognize the CRPOA has continued areas for improvement. However, we are pleased to have a staff put together that understands the vision as well as facilities and resources that will allow them to execute. Sara and her team have already made great strides this year, and they’re just getting started. Further, we wanted to take this opportunity to share with the community that, although the residents may not always be aware, the CRPOA Board has been diligently working to upgrade the operations. 2020 is poised to be the best yet for the Cordillera Ranch Property Owners Association. As we continue to communicate our plans to better our community, we encourage you to share our vision for Cordillera Ranch remaining the premier community in the region. Lastly, as you may know, the annual CRPOA meeting is typically held in the summer; however, given all of the transition we have been going through we wanted to get our staffing restructure complete before proceeding to the annual meeting. Now that we have the team in place, we’ll be announcing the annual meeting date soon, but we anticipate scheduling it in early December (stay tuned). Feel free to contact the CRPOA at 830.336.3501 or email us at crpoa@cordilleraranch.com. We’re here to serve!

THE 5 BROWNS

MOMIX, Photo by Max Pucciariello By Dan R. Goddard Photography courtesy of Boerne Performing Arts

The 5 Browns — five piano-playing siblings — are returning for a special Christmas concert presented by Boerne Performing Arts. Bringing world-class professional performers to the Hill Country at Champion Auditorium, the 2020 season features a rising a cappella group from Florida, tap dancing Australians and a multimedia dance troupe. Artistic director Greg Talford says the new season reflects Boerne Performing Arts’ commitment to quality. “We believe that we have had record-breaking ticket sales this year because we have developed a reputation of bringing artists from around the world that present a first-class, high-quality performance,” Greg Talford says. “Just like it is good to try different foods, it is good to experience different forms of the arts.” With the theme of “Hot, Hot, Hot,” the 9th season sizzles with instrumentalists, vocalists and dancers.

62 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019

Special Event, December 12, 2019, 7:30pm The 5 Browns — Ryan, Melody, Gregory, Deondra and Desirae — all attended New York’s Juilliard School, the first family of five siblings ever accepted simultaneously. Dubbed the “Fab Five” by People magazine in 2002, they appeared on Oprah, Jay Leno and 60 Minutes. Three of their albums have gone to No. 1 on Billboard Magazine’s Classical Album Chart. Delivering on their dream to wake up classical music by appealing to the widest audience possible, their eclectic range has become a trademark: a mix of classical piano compositions, Gershwin and soundtrack hits from movies like Star Wars and Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. “Since we’ve finally had the chance to record and release a Christmas album, it means we have more Christmas music to share,” Melody says. “We’re excited to perform some of our favorite music for Boerne. Everything from iconic, grand pieces on five pianos to quieter more beautiful holiday solos. It should be a really festive night!” This will be the second time the 5 Browns have performed in Boerne. “We adore performing in Boerne,” Desirae says. “The audience is warm, friendly and inviting. And it is such a beautiful place. We are all really excited to be returning to Boerne and elated to reunite with our long time Boerne friends.” The 5 Browns tour extensively and have performed everywhere from New York’s Carnegie Hall to Suntory Hall in Japan. “Tours are a lot of fun,” Ryan says. “The five of us meet up a couple days before a concert tour to rehearse. During these days, we appreciate being together. It’s great fun catching up with everyone during a tour. Our rehearsal the first day, in particular, is a bit drawn out, which is OK because we have such a great time talking and laughing. Experiencing the power of music together with your family is something that never gets old.” During their holiday tour, the 5 Browns will be performing songs from their Christmas album released in November. “We plan to have it available at our concert in Boerne,” Gregory says. “It was a really fun album to make, though I have to say it felt bizarre to be recording Christmas music in the summer. We also have another new passion project that we’ve been working on. We’ve recorded an album inspired by childhood, and many of

the tracks are pieces we played as children or grew up listening to. We don’t have a release date for this album yet, but be sure to keep an eye out for it.” While the 5 Browns are enjoying their success, they did pay a high price. They were a close-knit Mormon family until the three sisters indicted their father, who was also their manager, of sexual abuse in 2007, which is the subject of a new documentary, “The 5 Browns: Digging Through the Darkness.” The father was sent to prison for 10 years, while the sisters created the Foundation for Survivors of Abuse in 2011. “Audiences who have watched our lives through the documentary have been kind and generous, and mostly very respectful,” Deondra says. “It is crazy to think people have viewed it around the world and it is resonating with them. I think it is a testament to the fact we all understand what it feels like to experience pain and sadness, but the power of music can unite us all in joy and triumph.”

VOCTAVE January 30, 2019, 7:30pm Known for lush performances of Disney and Broadway hits, this 11-member a cappella group from Florida with ties to Walt Disney Entertainment spans gospel, pop and musical theater, attracting more than 100 million views on YouTube and Facebook.

MOMIX April 7, 2019, 7:30pm Artistic director Moses Pendleton combines athletic dance, riveting music, outrageous costumes and inventive props to transport audiences into a fantasy world with magical lighting and imagery. MOMIX has thrilled fans in more than 22 countries and appeared on stage, screen and television. Boerne Performing Arts board member Sue Talford says this year’s For Kids outreach program will feature a live performance for students by each of the performing groups. “More than 4,000 local students will attend a one-hour matinee presentation by each of the artists that will introduce them to professional performing arts,” Sue Talford says. “Since our organization’s inception, we have impacted over 24,000 students with a program that has been offered to the students at no charge. This year, every child in grades 2-3-4-5 and all special needs students will be experiencing a live performance by each of these artists.” Additionally, Boerne ISD students will be highlighted at each evening performance, providing the students an opportunity to perform with their high school ensemble, or to display visual art from students K-12. Thanks to generous sponsors, the students receive a complimentary ticket to the show. “We are fortunate to have a partnership with Boerne ISD and the use of Champion Auditorium,” Sue Talford says. “The board has worked diligently to maintain affordable ticket prices since the start of our organization in 2012, and with the exception of one ticket level increase in 2014, ticket prices have remained the same since our inception.” 2020 Season Tickets for three concerts range from $50 for students to $75 to $100 for subscribers to $170 for patrons featuring premium seating and a donation. Tickets for the 5 Browns Christmas concert are available separately. You can order tickets by visiting www.BoernePerformingArts.com, or call 830.331.9079.

THE TAP PACK March 17, 2019, 7:30pm Inspired by the famous “Rat Pack” of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., five of Australia’s finest tap dancing performers combine mind-blowing tap dancing, smooth vocals, a swinging live jazz band and witty on-stage banter reminiscent of the ‘60s-era Las Vegas bad boys.

HOME TOUR

STADLER CUSTOM HOMES

A FA R M H O U S E

WELCOME By Julie Catalano :: Blue Buin Photography

As one of the stars on the 2019 Fall Preferred Builders Home Tour at Cordillera Ranch, this luxury model home by Stadler Custom Homes beckons visitors to explore its enduring style inside and out. A classic blend of farmhouse elegance and sophisticated design, it makes an impressive statement at a coveted address — 46 Ledgestone Trail at the Springs of Cordillera Ranch. A longtime Cordillera Ranch preferred builder, Stadler Custom Homes of San Antonio brings more than two decades of knowledge and expertise in a variety of styles including contemporary, traditional, eclectic, French country, transitional, Mediterranean and more. Farmhouse is a winning combination of clean lines, neutral palette and simplicity of design, says Brittany Mayberry, sales and marketing for Stadler Custom Homes. “It’s a timeless trend that doesn’t require decking out with an entire farmhouse catalog. We used modern, high-end finishes and fixtures that can be updated over time while staying true to the friendly, inviting nature of farmhouse style.”

68 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019

The one-story, 3,702-square-foot beauty boasts four bedrooms, four-and-a-half baths and a three-car garage, all topped by a durable and streamlined dark metal standing seam roof. The exterior is a mix of natural and manmade materials, including rock that was mostly sourced from Austin area quarries says Mayberry. Beige stone is a Texas Blend Limestone cut in six-, eight-, and ten-inch blocks accented by light-colored stucco, making the black-framed aluminum windows “really ‘pop’ against the light colors,” says Mayberry. Project architect is San Antonio architectural firm A Design by Gustavo Arredondo. Exterior accents include cedar posts and front window shutters, and painted shiplap — all farmhouse-style staples. Because

the 1.40-acre corner lot faces two streets, the three-car garage faces one street and the elegant circle drive faces the front. A light, bright open floor plan of living/dining/kitchen is accented by exposed cedar beams and hand-scraped hickory floors that lend warmth to a space where abundant natural light streams through large windows and fixed transom windows. A focal point is a woodburning fireplace with brick interior and quartzite hearth framed by a surround of white painted shiplap all the way to the ceiling. Operable windows open outward, a “very European farmhouse look,” says Mayberry, “along with European style lighting fixtures.” A bonus flex room off the open floor plan with barn doors stands ready to be transformed into a study, formal dining room, playroom or guest room, complete with walk-in closet and access to a powder bath. Fabulous features shine in the gourmet kitchen, with perimeter countertops in Onyx Carrara quartz and kitchen island topped with Carrara Axtrix. Painted wood custom cabinetry features softclose doors in full overlay European style that conceals hinges. Stainless Thermador® appliances include a double oven with six-burner range and griddle, two-panel refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher and microwave. A full farmhouse sink and a smaller veggie sink in the island connects triangles between range, refrigerator and sinks, providing an easy, logical flow for cooking and cleaning. Genuine Stone in Smoke Chevron shares that wall with a generous walk-in pantry; a nearby smaller overhead cabinet gives easy access to frequently-used items. The utility room door pays whimsical homage to vintage farmhouse style with the word “Laundry” painted on the glass and a creative sheetrock ceiling treatment. Ultimate indulgence reigns in the master bedroom with an outside door to a private patio, perfect for morning coffee or an afternoon break, with stepping stones leading to the pool and hot tub. The house itself is adjacent to a neighborhood walking trail for an invigorating run or leisurely stroll. Indulgence continues in the master bath with his-and-her vanities and a makeup vanity niche highlighted in gray painted shiplap echoed at the opposite end around the Lindsey acrylic freestanding tub from Signature Hardware. Floor tile is Torino Gray from Stone Solutions in a diagonal installation. Each of the three secondary bedrooms also has its own en suite shower bath with a selfcontained walk-in closet so that one door leads to both. The patio is perfect for everyday family living and entertaining, with an outdoor kitchen and seating area. The ceiling, says Mayberry, “is a cost-effective, prefabricated material in a tongue-and-groove installation and comes in a variety of colors.” Flagstone coping is used around the pool and hot tub. Energy efficient features include aluminum double pane low-E, thermally broken windows; recessed can LED lighting throughout the house; and foam insulation in walls, attic and the entire roofline. Stadler Custom Homes prides itself on customer happiness from the ground up. “We have built more than 60 homes in Cordillera Ranch,” says Mayberry, “and are familiar with the soil, topography, types of foundations, placement on the lot and more.” They guide clients every step of the way either faceto-face or through collaborative technology, remaining laserfocused on superior craftsmanship, legendary attention to detail and an unparalleled history of excellence in home building. “We will make sure your home maintains the style you want while staying within your budget.” STADLER CUSTOM HOMES

DEVELOPERS CORNER

GROWTH

CONTINUES By Charlie Hill

Development activity on two new sections of new home sites is nearing completion and planning is under way for a new phase of lots in the Springs. You may have seen Clubs Drive in the most recent section of lots in Clubs Village, Unit 207 along hole number 12, has been completed and the entry landscaping work will be starting soon. Meanwhile, Cordillera Ridge entry landscaping and gate is nearing completion. Over in the Springs of Cordillera Ranch, sales in the first phase continue to progress and there are several homes completed along with four more under construction and another five in architectural design review. Given we’re approximately halfway sold out of the first phase,

platting is under way for the next phase of lots in Unit 301C and Unit 302. These two units will deliver 44 new home sites and some new variety. At an average size of 2.3 acres, the 39 home sites in Unit 302 average approximately 70% larger in size than those in Unit 301 while provid-

ing numerous view and tree covered lots for privacy. Unit 301C offers five of the most premier home sites offered to date in the Springs. Set along the crystal-clear flowing waters of Panther Creek amid towering Cypress trees, these estates are unlike any we’ve ever offered. Just like in the first phase of the Springs, these new lots will include central water and sewer service — which saves the homeowner approximately $30,000 to $40,000 per lot versus digging a well and installing a septic system — plus central gas service. With lots ranging from $150k to $270k, that equates to $110k to $230k for home sites without central water and sewer service; however, this pre-development pricing won’t last long so don’t let these unique offerings pass.
