I’ve had several ongoing reminders of our military recently, so I took that as a sign. An email on the origin of “Taps” sent me to the Internet. Its origin is arguable, its lyrics powerful and its simple melody is stirring in marking the end of a day, or the significance of a life. I also attended the Night to Honor our Heroes associated with the Valero Texas Open. Active military representing all ranks and services, wounded warriors, President George W. Bush and corporate supporters gathered to celebrate our military and “Military City USA.” A tremendous evening that I encourage you to attend in the future. Memorial Day is soon upon us and May is National Military Appreciation Month, a month to recognize and show appreciation to our Armed Forces. Following are some dates over the next couple of months that I hope you find worthy of pause not just as you read them below, but briefly on their actual date of observation. May 1, 2019 - Loyalty Day - Set aside for American citizens to reaffirm their loyalty to the United States and to recognize the heritage of American freedom. May 2, 2019 - National Day of Prayer - Annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. May 8, 2019 - VE (Victory in Europe) Day - Marks the anniversary of the Allies’ victory in Europe during World War II on May 8, 1945. May 10, 2019 - Military Spouse Appreciation Day - Acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices of the spouses of the U.S. Armed Forces. May 13, 2019 - Children of Fallen Patriots Day - Honor the families our Fallen Heroes have left behind – especially their children. It’s a reminder to the community that we have an obligation to support the families of our Fallen Patriots. May 18, 2019 - Armed Forces Day - Pay tribute to men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces. May 27, 2019 - Memorial Day - Commemorate all who have died in military service for the United States. June 6, 2019 - Anniversary of the World War II Allied invasion in Normandy, France, known as D-Day (1944) June 14, 2019 - Flag Day - Commemorate the United States flag. June 14, 2019 - Army Birthday June 27, 2019 - National PTSD Awareness Day July 4, 2019 – Independence Day So, remember our military, thank a soldier, honor a veteran, fly the flag, reflect on history and at the end of a day in May, listen to “Taps” and view its lyrics (www. youtube.com/watch?v=x9xNoEu3O8c). May 7-9 :: Ladies Ranch Round Up
This is the sixth year of the Ladies Member-Guest at Cordillera Ranch. The format for the event is Four-Ball Stableford (Max Net Double Bogey). Teams will be divided into flights based on combined handicap. Maximum handicap differential is 9. Flight winners advance to Shoot-Out Finals on Thursday following play. Shoot-out is 3-hole elimination with two finalists playing #18 for the Championship. The team at Cordillera Ranch has planned several fun activities following play on Tuesday and Wednesday. A dinner will follow the Shoot-Out on Thursday.
May 12 :: Mother’s Day Brunch
Time: 11:00am to 2:00pm Celebrate Mother’s Day this year at the Club with a delicious brunch the whole family will enjoy. Executive Chef Isaac Cantu and his team have planned an extravagant menu just for the occasion and Bernie Martini will be here to provide beautiful music for your enjoyment. May 17-19 :: Men’s Senior Club Championship
This year we have combined the Men’s and Senior Club Championship to compete over the same weekend. The Championship flight will be contested over three days while all other flights will compete over two days. Breakfast and lunch will be included on both Saturday and Sunday. We will also include a unique tee gift for each participant this year. Players may choose which flight they would like to compete with-in. 3-Day Championship Flight: Open to all members, played from Nicklaus tee yardage 2-Day Open Flight: Members 54 and younger, played from Nicklaus tee yardage 2-Day Senior Championship Flight: Open to members 55 and over, played from Ranch tee yardage. We were originally introduced to Cordillera Ranch in 2005 as frequent guests of good friends who built here and immediately developed a favorable appreciation for this unique community. With Cleve’s semi-retirement in 2017, our relocation alternatives were focused on the Texas Hill Country and, specifically, Cordillera Ranch was top of the list. To us, Cordillera Ranch is so much more than a large development with beautiful homes. The scale of the property, the range of amenities and The Clubs make it truly unique. But most importantly, it’s the people — warm, approachable and with so many interesting backgrounds and interests. In the year-anda-half residing here, we have already developed many great friendships. We regularly enjoy many of the facilities and amenities of the Ranch and The Clubs including golf, fitness, dining, wine, the pool, river and shooting. We also participate in social organizations including the wine club and nature club. We are convinced that we have the best of both worlds living in such a unique community without congestion, but with easy access to big city services whenever we want.
We appreciate the staff in the dining area as they manage to always accommodate our requests for the unusual ways we like things cooked. On holidays, we are thankful for the convenience to be able to order and pick up food so we can enjoy the holiday. We use the shuttle services regularly, and Ben is always on time and never complains about the amount of luggage that accompanies our travels. Last, but not least, the Gun Club is top notch. Shane and his staff are knowledgeable and helpful. We enjoy “date night” at the Gun Club frequently as it is something we enjoy as a couple.

Her parents had passed away and the thought of selling the home where she grew up was more than she could bear. I took care of every detail and guided her through each step. The house sold quickly, and my closing gift to her was a canvas painting of the house. We still keep in touch and she’s shared that when she’s missing her parents, she looks at the painting and it helps her reminisce the happy memories. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST PROFESSIONAL CHALLENGE? My greatest professional challenge has been to have a good work/life/mom balance. As a mom of three boys, I feel pulled in many directions. However, I strive to learn and grow professionally and be a good example for them, and when I’m with them, I work hard at being present and intentional with our time together.

A review of what keeps Angie and Billy Lemmons busy reveals they have servants’ hearts. The inspiration for their vast, humble service is largely drawn from President George H. W. Bush. Billy explains, “President Bush said it so well ‘ … There could be no definition of a successful life that does not include service to others.’” CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 37
More than a quote, the Lemmons have embraced it as a way of life. For Billy, a Managing Partner and cofounder of EnCap Flatrock Midstream in San Antonio, and formerly a Vice President at Enron, the road to community service came in the form of an invitation twenty years ago, “A young man named Israel Hernandez was in the first class of the Bush School of Government and Public Service. While he was in the program, he interned on my team in Houston to get some energy industry experience. I was honored when Israel invited me to attend his graduation. I met President Bush afterward outside the library. I can still remember shaking his hand and then being

in a picture with him, Israel and some of Israel’s family and friends. It was a lifetime highlight moment for me. One of the world’s greatest leaders and I still remember how warm and friendly he was to everyone.” It was particularly special that the meeting occurred at Texas A&M, as both are alums. A native of Riviera, Texas, Billy, a registered professional engineer holds a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering and Angie, a San Antonio native, holds an accounting degree. Both have M.B.A.’s from the Mays Graduate School of Business at Texas A&M. They met at A&M and married soon after graduating in 1984. Angie remembers well the impact of the commencement speaker at her graduation, then Vice President George H.W. Bush, “The thing I remember most was how amazed I was to have someone as important as him there. I can’t remember his words, but I do know that that’s when I became a HUGE fan of George Bush.” Shortly after his presidential election in November 1988, President Bush chose to locate his Presidential Library and Museum at A&M — a decision based in large part to the campus, it’s military traditions and the Aggie Core Values: Respect, Excellence, Leadership, Loyalty, Integrity and Selfless Service, which aligned with his own. “It has been heartwarming to see, over the years, how much President Bush loved A&M and the Aggies loved him right back,” says Billy. Billy serves as a trustee of the Texas A&M Foundation which manages the university’s $2 billion endowment, but it was in 2017 that his relationship began with the Bush family as a Texas A&M appointee of the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation, recently renamed The George and Barbara Bush Foundation. “My role as a trustee really grew out of our involvement at A&M. I’ll never forget when I got the question “…would you serve if you were asked?” For Billy, the role is profound, “What an incredible honor and responsibility it is.” Billy serves with other trustees Jeb Bush, Neal Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger and former cabinet members James Baker, John Sununu, Andrew Card and Lynn Martin overseeing future development of the library and school and directing the growth of the foundation. “The library is considered a crown jewel at TAMU, and the school serves as the living legacy of the incredible lives of George and Barbara Bush and hosts numerous U.S. and foreign leaders speaking on world
affairs and public service. It’s important that we use the Presidential Library to communicate the incredible story of their lives so that future generations can follow their positive examples. And maybe more importantly, The Bush School of Government and Public Service produces the leaders that continue the legacy and belief that public service is in fact a noble calling.” Billy says it’s an exciting time for both, “There’s a lot going on right now. In 2022 we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Presidential Library and the Bush School. The timing is appropriate to upgrade facilities and exhibits and continue the growth of the school mission, including scholarships. David Jones, who was a long-time advisor to the President, is CEO of the foundation and is doing a great job leading this effort, along with Jeb Bush who is taking a personal interest in it.” The respect is mutual. “Billy brings a tremendous leadership background and a very keen interest in President Bush and his career, so it’s been a very, very good match. He and Angie have attended both of our recent trustee gatherings that we’ve had in Kennebunkport, Maine and he’s become a real important player for us on that trustee board,” says David Jones, adding that Billy is part of the campaign committee tasked with helping fund these initiatives that are on the drawing board for the next three to five years. The capital campaign is, according to Billy, in a quiet phase with

some interesting plans. “One thing that’s already been announced is that the Presidential Library will be receiving a retired Marine One, the helicopter you see taking the President to and from the White House. I’ve seen some renditions of the new building that will house it and it will be amazing. We’ve also taken the early steps to land (literally) Air Force One when it is retired in a few years. President Bush took delivery of the current Air Force One while he was in office and it has been used by every President since. A formal request has been made to the Secretary of the Air Force, and this was the first step in what will be a lengthy process. In a great bipartisan act, the entire Texas congressional delegation sent a letter endorsing the request. This plane has been a part of so much history and it would be a huge attraction for the library. Before his passing last fall, President Bush made it clear that he was excited about this opportunity for the library.” While Billy serves in his role, Angie participates in many events. In 2017, together they had the memorable opportunity to visit with President and Mrs. Bush in their home in Kennebunkport, Maine. Their admiration grew even greater Billy says, “We’ve been lifelong admirers and supporters of President and

Mrs. Bush, and really their entire family — and it’s been because of the great examples of leadership they set; old-fashioned values that our world needs so much today — that it’s possible to be both strong and compassionate, to give the credit to others, and remembering to be grateful. President and Mrs. Bush lived such incredible lives of service to others and what a team they were! President Bush had such a dignified, yet down-to-earth
style of leadership… he was strong, compassionate, humble, funny and he never took himself too seriously. And Mrs. Bush was such an incredible force on every front. She, too, had the gifts of humility and humor.” Billy served as an honorary pallbearer at services for the President in Houston. “I’ve always said that no one had a better resume to serve as President of our great nation, and some are beginning to say that he may in fact be the greatest one-term President. We’ve had the incredible pleasure of getting to know many of the family members, as well as many of the President’s former cabinet, staff members and advisors. It’s incredible to see the love and devotion they carry to this day for President and Mrs. Bush.” The Lemmons’ service extends beyond their alma mater and President Bush’s legacy. After her retirement from a career in public accounting with Ernst & Young and in various corporate accounting positions, Angie turned her attention to raising their three daughters and volunteering. Over the past 18 years, Angie has served as a board member and officer of numerous non-profit organizations including the Boerne Education Foundation, several Boerne organizations and the Parent Teacher Organizations (PTO’s) at all of her daughters’ schools, from elementary through high school. She has served on special committees of the Boerne Independent School District in leadership roles studying everything from zoning to class rank methodologies. “When they were younger, all three of our girls participated for many years in the sport of Acrobatic Gymnastics. Because this sport had such a positive influence on our girls, we helped found
and continue to support the Acrobatic Gymnastics Foundation which helps economically disadvantaged athletes continue to participate in the sport. As a family, we’ve been involved for several years with Family Legacy Ministries which provides Christian education to orphans in Zambia. We’ve been to Zambia twice with our daughters and look forward to returning. And we’ve all been involved in various ways with service organizations such as Hill Country Daily Bread and YoungLife. We’re big believers in the power of quality education, the life lessons that come from participation in youth sports, and the call to service and hope that comes from faith,” says Angie. The Lemmons moved to Cordillera Ranch 17 years ago as one of the first homeowners in the development. Their home pays homage to their allegiance says Billy, “There’s plenty of diplomas, football helmets and pictures from Aggieland!” The legacy continues as all three of their daughters were accepted into the Business Honors Program in the Mays Business School. Oldest daughters, Hayley and Kelsey, work for management consulting firms in the Dallas area while the youngest daughter, Avery, is in her freshman year at A&M. The family has always enjoyed spending time on campus, especially during football season. “We have a second home that’s a ten-minute walk from Kyle Field — we’re up there all the time. It’s also been fun to meet many great Aggies at Cordillera and in the Boerne area. Some have joined us at our ‘tailgate’ house when they come up for the games. We haven’t missed very many home football games since we were students!”

The Team Northington flag is once again flying high outside the Men’s Grille after defeating Team Hill, 65 – 55, in the 13th Annual Cordillera Cup. The Ryder Cup-style event proved to be very competitive again this year. Team Northington held a slim lead after Day 1 of Four Ball and Foursomes matches: Team Northington 32 – Team Hill 28. Day 2 consisted of 60 individual matches, which proved to be very competitive as well, with Team Northington 33 and Team Hill 27. Thank you to everyone who played in the event and once again helped make the Cordillera Cup a great success. We are definitely in full-swing with our golf calendar. Our next big events coming up are the Ranch Round-Up Ladies Member-Guest, Club Championship and Senior Club Championship, and our new event taking the place of the Stampede called Ball and Chain Couples Member-Guest. As you read this article, we have finalized all the planning for the Ranch Round-Up. This is a great event with a few new twists for this year. On Tuesday night — the Hoedown — our ladies will have the opportunity to jump on a mechanical bull and test their bull bucking skills. We will have caricature artists drawing pictures of the teams and a DJ which is sure to make for a great evening. On Wednesday afternoon, after completion of Round 1, ladies will be entertained by artists from Painting With A Twist for a day of painting and wine around the pool. This is sure to be a great time! The biggest change to our calendar this year is the addition of our Ball and Chain Couples Member-Guest which is replacing the Stampede. Ball and Chain is a twoday member-guest event on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1. The format for this event will be Two Best Ball Eclectic Counting, one score from the men and one score from the women on each hole. The Eclectic format allows each team to replace a score on each hole with a lower score from Round 2. We are organizing this event to be just like our other member-guest events at the Club. The price for this event is set at $1,200 and includes tee gifts, prizes, lunch and dinner on Friday and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Help us make this event a success. All of this planning has been a lot of fun and the Golf Professional Team is excited to see these events quickly approaching. We need your participation to make all of the events a success, so come join us at the Club and on the course.

By Debbie Pepper :: Photography by Kelsey Grudle The Club’s “Chicks and Sticks” program was initiated in 2012 as both an introductory ladies’ golf program for beginners and as a golf “tune-up” for those advanced beginner/intermediate players. Having started the same program at my previous club, The Club at La Costa in Southern California, I was excited to present the idea to Cordillera Ranch, hoping to have the same success introducing more ladies to the game of golf in a fun, non-threatening environment. As a non-golfer most of my adult life and an avid tennis player, I didn’t take up golf until my 50’s and never saw myself falling in love with the game. Due to my exposure in the club industry and hosting golf teams in the annual Club Corp tournaments at Pinehurst Resort every year, I slowly became enamored and decided to take a few lessons. It didn’t take long before I couldn’t

wait to get out on the range and practice. I found the game not only good for my business, but a wonderful social outlet. I fell in love with the nuances of so many spectacular golf courses that are each beautifully designed and challenging in their own way. I was hooked and realized that if I could take up the game — as a former disbeliever who thought golf was boring — then there was an opportunity for other women to forge the same path. Initially the program was promoted as “Ladies’ Golf Happy Hour” in hopes of enticing those who were unsure or not as interested in learning golf as they were in socializing at a fun happy hour afterwards. In other words, the catch phrase “a little bit of golf and a lot of happy hour” that I have used often to recruit ladies to join the program has proven quite successful. We all understand that the game of golf can be intimidating and espe-
cially so for ladies who have never picked up a golf club before. Thus, promoting the program as a golf clinic followed by social happy hour has worked well and, in the seven years since it began, we have recruited nearly 100 ladies as part of our “Chicks and Sticks” program which is what we call it today. More importantly, a good majority of ladies who had no original intention of ever playing golf have used it as a launching pad and are now playing weekly and enjoying the game! Sessions include a one-hour and fifteen-minute golf clinic followed by an hour or more of social happy hour afterwards. Sessions run once a week for six weeks at a time, from spring to early summer and then start back up as a fall session. We divide the ladies into two groups of beginners and advanced beginners/intermediates. Led by two golf professionals, the sessions are divided into introductory basics, golf swing, irons, long clubs/woods/drivers, short game/ pitching/chipping, putting and the last session is always on-course playing a few holes. Additionally, we are not only blessed to learn to play on one of the top-rated golf courses in Texas, but we also enjoy a world-class Practice Park which includes our two-sided driving range with areas for short-game practice. Our two additional practice holes make it easy when working on more advanced teaching such as hitting approach shots or downhill or uphill lies since we are having a clinic an 2016 Valero Texason Open actual golf hole instead of just the practice range. Today, just as it was in 2012, Club Members are moving in from all over and the program is the perfect vehicle to gather new and old members together in a fun setting to help them get connected and involved. Many of our original beginning ladies are now playing and joining the Nine Hole groups, and the more advanced have moved on to join the Eighteen Holers as well as our CWGA and are becoming even more involved. Our “Chicks and Sticks” program feeds into the Club’s very involved CWGA and we are all part of the growing surge of women golfers worldwide as reported in the National Golf Foundation’s 2018 Golf Industry Report. Those statistics report that women now comprise 24 percent of all golfers — an increase of more than 13 percent over the past five years. So, what are you waiting for? It’s spring and there’s no better time to get out and enjoy great weather, great camaraderie and give the game of golf a “swinging” chance! Try it... I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

By Jeff Eldridge :: Photos by Nick Menger As you can see from the photos, transformation of the west end of the practice park is well underway! The wrapping up of construction on the Performance Center signaled the start of work on new greens, tees and a practice bunker which are designed to perfectly complement the fabulous indoor performance building. This new area will feature two new 4,500-square-foot greens — one for pitching and chipping and one for practice putting. The chipping green will be contoured to accept shots from several angles and distances including shots from the 1,400-square-foot practice bunker. Contours on the practice green will be much more subtle and will allow for extended sessions to hone in your putting stroke. The complex will feature two teeing areas — one next to the building which is reserved for use with the Performance Center and the other farther south which is for general usage. The Performance Center tee will be 2,500 square feet in size, while the main tee measures a generous 18,000 square feet. All areas are designed and will be grassed to mimic areas on the golf course. The tees will be grassed in Zeon Zoysia to match the tees and fairways on the course and the greens will be Bentgrass just like the greens on the course. The bunker will be constructed just like the golf course bunkers and will feature the same white sand shipped in from California. As soon as construction finishes, we will begin the next stage of the project which is called “grow in.” During this time period, we will customize our water and fertilizer inputs to ensure a timely and successful opening and we anticipate a mid-summer opening of the teeing surfaces. The greens are somewhat of a wild card with a late spring seeding date but, depending on Mother Nature, should be looking good to open mid to late winter. When all is said and done, the west end will offer a wonderful area to practice both indoors and out and we are very excited to provide this fantastic amenity to members and guests!

CORDILLERA RANCH TENNIS By Joe De Luna :: Photography by Kelsey Grudle There was much anticipation on the sunny afternoon of Friday, April 5th at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch Tennis Club as members and guests waited for the arrival of the greatest men’s tennis duo of all time. The energy around the tennis courts could be felt as amateur participants and Club pros finished their warm-up and prepared for Mike and Bob Bryan (winners of a staggering 118 titles — the most ever), Ryan Harrison (2017 French Open Doubles Champion) and Marty Fish (former top 20 player and current Davis Cup Captain) to roll into the parking lot so the Pro-Am could begin. Adults and kids alike were wide-eyed and giddy when the brothers and fellow touring pros stepped out of their vehicles and proceeded to the tennis courts.

The Pro-Am began with Wayne Bryan, the brothers’ father, addressing the intimate crowd of around 60. Wayne, a showman himself, started things off by remarking about how beautiful the Ranch is and how thankful they were for the opportunity to play in such a great setting. Introductions were made, the players were paired and just a few moments later, the Pro-Am was under way. The format was four rounds of doubles with each amateur playing with a Club pro or a touring pro. After the scores were tallied, there was a tie break played for each place with the highlight being the first and second place playoff which pitted the top two amateurs against each other — one playing with Mike Bryan and the other with Bob. This was wildly entertaining as we are all used to them playing with each other, not against. The brothers’ commentary and dialogue before, during and after points was humorous and witty. The crowd laughed, cheered and engaged in friendly banter with the brothers as they went back and forth with amazing shots and their signature chest bump with their amateur partners. As for the winner? Well, on that day we all felt as if we had won. Their down-to-earth personalities and tennis greatness were constantly on display. All the touring pros were extremely gracious and humble, taking pictures, selfies and signing autographs. The Bryan Brothers and friends truly dazzled the Cordillera crowd from beginning to end. We will look forward to their participation in a future San Antonio Pro Tennis Classic and perhaps a second visit to the Ranch.

So, whether you are surrounded by cyclists or breathing together in yoga, working out with a group of people allows you to perform better and push yourself harder. DIVERSITY A well-rounded fitness program alleviates boredom and allows exposure to new kinds of exercise. The Club’s Group Exercise schedule offers a variety of workout styles and opportunities. Year-round classes such as Yoga, Indoor Cycling and Pilates Reformer are consistently available, and during the summer,
seasonal classes such as Paddle Board Yoga and Aqua Zumba in the Cordillera Ranch Pool are offered. Each month the schedule changes as new classes or once-a-month master classes are added. This May, we are introducing a new Pilates Tower Flow class which will bring a more deliberate pace than traditional Pilates Reformer classes. As the Fitness Center renovation nears completion, we look forward to introducing small Group Exercise classes on the Precor Queenax®, a unique and functional bodyweight training system. From Wine and Beyond…… By Jeffrey Cohen I would like to start with a countdown to the pool season. The soft opening will be the weekend of May 18 and 19. We will have new, exciting drinks as well as your favorites from years past and everyone is working to make this an epic summer at the pool. Now that we have shed our coats and sweaters, and pulled out the shorts and sandals, it is time to ‘summerize’ our wines. Firstly, find your favorite Rosé! Rosés are exceptional at quenching your thirst and can be made from any red varietal. At the Club, we have rosés from Malbec, rosés from Sangiovese and, of course, the Provençal Grenache and Carignan. There literally are rosés from all over the world. The next porch pleaser, patio pounder or whatever you wish to call your poolside wine, is the Sauvignon Blanc. They range from a domestic citrusy style, to a grapefruitty and grassy New Zealand style to a minerally and creamy style from the Loire Valley. The latter mentioned are normally called Sancerres. The final, but certainly not least, wine that I would like to mention is a Vouvray in Loire, or Chenin Blanc in other parts of the world. They are a perfect pairing for a Spinach Salad that has fruit and some goat cheese. You can even enjoy Chenin with a simple bowl of fruit. As we approach the summer and peaches are right down the road, this is the wine to go to. Although fruity, they do come in dry or sweeter styles. Please make sure and check your alcohol level to insure you have a dry wine. Any labeling of alcohol above 12 percent will yield you the dryer style and of course the opposite for a sweeter style. As many are stuck on reds, just remember a little CHILL on those will help them go down easier all summer. As I close, I want to thank everybody that has attended our last events: Our second installment of the MOBB was very well received — the winner being the Redemption High Rye. For those that attended the Hill Family Estates Wine Dinner, we were awed by Ryan Hill who took us on a stroll of the Napa Valley. Ryan, being from a fifth generation farming family, had great insights on how times have changed through the years. We even had an impromptu Sabering of Champagne. We also welcomed Rob Mondavi Jr. out here to the Club for a seminar. The Mondavi family, after the many generations, have spread out to several different wineries around the world but mostly Napa and Sonoma. Nevertheless, the practices that were passed down from the legendary Robert Mondavi are still being practiced in their vineyards and their households. Rob Jr. gave a compelling seminar for about an hour and a half. During his speech, the attendees tasted through five of his wines. This was a true evening to remember. See you all at the Club…….

With spring upon us and most of the waterways in the Hill Country running well above average, this is a great time to explore and enjoy the Upper Guadalupe River between Sisterdale and Guadalupe State Park.
There is no better way to explore the Guadalupe River than by kayak. The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch has a fleet of kayaks for our members and their guests to utilize and invite you to come give it a try. As the Outfitter for the Club, we offer complimentary Learn to Kayak classes during the spring and summer. We teach kayaking on Swede Creek Lake, a very controlled environment and great place to learn to paddle before heading out onto the waters of the Guadalupe. The Club has all sit-on-top and inflatable kayaks, which are the easiest and safest kayaks to paddle. Sit-on-tops have similar hull shapes to their traditional counterparts, but instead of sitting inside the kayak, you sit in a molded-in depression on top. They share many benefits with traditional sit-insides, but are easier to use. There are sit-on-tops for fishing, surfing, touring, scuba diving and more, and they have a few advantages over sit-insides, one of which is comfort. Paddlers with large body types, long legs or limited flexibility feel less confined while paddling a sit-on-top. One of the biggest benefits, though, is the self-rescue. Because

they have an open deck rather than an enclosed one, there is no risk of being trapped in the boat if it tips over — no need to practice rolls or wet exits, which really appeals to new paddlers. For the more athletic and daring, we have inflatable stand-up paddle boards designed especially for the river environment. For fishermen, we also have a raft that will hold our guide and two fishermen, one on the back and one on the front. From its headwaters outside Kerrville, the Guadalupe River flows over a limestone bed lined with beautiful, huge, old Cypress trees accented by Pecans, Sycamores, Elms, Live Oaks and others that add to the scenic attraction of the river. The river is slightly narrower near the headwaters with shallow banks and gravel bars and fewer rapids. The gradient increases as it moves towards Cordillera Ranch, where rapids exist just below the Ranch at Bergheim as the river makes it way towards Canyon Lake and ultimately towards the Gulf of Mexico. The water quality in the Upper Guadalupe is generally very good. However, it will become muddy after a rainfall and may

Early spring to late June generally offers the best conditions, followed by late September through early November. With proper cold weather gear, the Upper Guadalupe can be paddled in the winter when temperatures are permissible and adequate flow is available. Summer paddling is fun and adventurous with adequate rainfall, but can be a bit challenging in the small rapids when flows are below 100 cubic feet per second (cfs). Summer temperatures should be considered a hazard if proper precautions are not taken. Always have protective clothing, sunscreen and plenty of non-alcoholic liquids to prevent dehydration. Headwinds can also be a challenge unless the water is moving, so plan trip distances according to flow rate and wind conditions for the most enjoyable paddle trip. I have paddled every section of the Upper Guadalupe between Comfort and Canyon Lake over the past 13 years. During that time, I have witnessed many changes in the character of this river. The Upper Guadalupe is my favorite Hill Country river to paddle because it is serenely beautiful, seldom crowded and offers an enjoyable paddle trip for almost any paddler. There are some good Class II drops, and at high water levels some of them can become Class III ratings. The Upper Guadalupe is a pool-and-drop river typical of most Texas rivers. I have paddled the Upper Guadalupe in the heat of the summer and cold of winter and I highly recommend this river for anybody wanting to experience the joys of kayaking. The River Club also has toobs, which offer a slow-paced and intimate way to enjoy the river. The Upper Guadalupe is a free-flowing river at the mercy of rainfall and spring flow. We have three spring-fed creeks on Cordillera Ranch that contribute to this beautiful waterway. The first is Spring Creek, which has steady RIVER DISTANCES AROUND CORDILLERA RANCH flow as it drops underground in dry times Hwy 474 to Swede Creek at Cordillera Ranch 13 miles just south of the bridge across Cordillera Trace. The next is Swede Creek, which has Kreutzberg Canyon Natural Area to Swede Creek at Cordillera Ranch 11 miles a steady constant flow and feeds the lake Swede Creek at Cordillera Ranch to Bergheim Campground (FM 3351) 1.8 miles at Swede Creek Park. The last is Panther Bergheim Campground (FM 3351) to Edge Falls Road 3.8 miles Creek, which is in the Springs of Cordillera Ranch on the east side of FM3351. This beautiful creek is also lined with Cypress trees and has a steady flow down into the Guadalupe River.

FOUNDATION Delivers Innovation to Boerne ISD
By Kevin Thompson :: Photography by Jocelyn Durand, courtesy of Boerne ISD If your annual property tax bill reads, “Boerne Independent School District: $10,000,” it’s effectively incorrect. Boerne ISD doesn’t keep all those taxes. Your bill should read, “Boerne Independent School District: $8,800 / State of Texas: $1,200.” As a “Robin Hood” school district, Boerne ISD pays roughly 12 percent of its collections to the state. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) then redistributes the funds to “property poor” school districts, defined as those having less than $319,500 of property value per student. All the while, Boerne ISD spends less per student than the state average. Two decades ago, supporters of public education in Boerne committed to offsetting the 12 percent outflow to other school districts by founding the Boerne Education Foundation (BEF). BEF raises private funds that flow to all Boerne ISD campuses both on a per capita basis and through a direct grant program called Teacher Impact Grants (TIGs). Last year, BEF raised more than $365,000 for innovative academic initiatives within Boerne ISD. “Without BEF, we wouldn’t be able to do many of the things we do in BISD because of all the money we send to the state,” Boerne ISD Superintendent Dr. Tommy Price said. “BEF provides us with above and beyond tools we aren’t able to buy through our normal operating budget.”

Price has seen BEF’s impact particularly on Boerne ISD’s teachers. “If you look at video footage of the teachers BEF awarded grants to,” continued Price, “you see genuine surprise and enthusiasm on their faces. Some of them have tears in their eyes. To them, it’s a huge sign of support. That, to me, is the essence of BEF.” Boerne High School physics teacher David Locke has experienced BEF’s support firsthand. He received a TIG to purchase carts and tracks so his students could better study velocity, acceleration and momentum. “The tracks BEF funded are aluminum,” Locke explained. “They replaced cheaper plastic tracks that were becoming warped. The warped tracks likely adversely affected the data that students collected.” Locke also requested BEF fund optics kits used in conjunction with the tracks. Specialty mirrors and lenses enhance the learning experience. “I appreciate all that BEF does for the schools of Boerne ISD!” Locke said. Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) requests are becoming more common as TEA has increased its focus on those subjects. Boerne ISD mathematics coordinator Dr. Linda Gann helped a group of elementary math teachers apply for a BEF grant two years ago. “We needed a common set of math resources across Boerne ISD,” Gann explained. “To guide students through
a learning process that includes tactile modeling, pictorial representation and abstract understanding, we asked BEF for standardized manipulatives for teachers to use with their students.” BEF funded the acquisition of modeling bars, blocks, flash cards and shaping tools that can be customized to a student’s particular learning level. “The objects allow for differentiated instruction that keeps kids engaged,” stated Gann. “Teachers can work with certain students in small groups while others continue to be challenged in their own workstations. It’s been a phenomenal, grassroots approach — a pivotal turning point for us.” Curington Elementary School second grade teacher Shanna Estes was among those who received the hands-on teaching tools. “My class is already benefiting from the guided math kits,” Estes said. “The students have something they can manipulate, ensuring a deeper understanding than if I just used a worksheet to teach the same concepts. The more hands on I can make my lessons, the greater the depth of understanding becomes for my students.”

You make it better than it really would be. When you actually see it, that’s the reality and you can’t change the reality.” “BEF has helped our students become time travelers and explorers of the universe!” stated McLaughlin. “The virtual reality headsets help make learning authentic for the students.” Even librarians are getting in on the act. Cibolo Creek Elementary School librarian April Brinson received a TIG in 2017 to enhance science instruction through her library collection. “We increased our nonfiction collection by almost 10 percent,” Brinson explained, “and the titles we added have already been checked out more than 700 times. Students are able to learn more about a science class topic or a topic they simply find fascinating. We are so thankful for the addition.”
Boerne Middle School North (BMSN) educational technology specialist Lisa McLaughlin is helping teachers deepen student understanding across multiple subjects. Using a BEF grant, the school purchased a set of Oculus virtual reality headsets. “Students are taking technology they’re familiar with and merging it with what we want them to see, giving them purpose and direction and making it an educational experience. That’s our goal,” McLaughlin said. McLaughlin used the headsets with English / Reading teacher Stacie Murrah and Social Studies teacher Bret Bunker to bring topics like the dust bowl and wildfire damage to life for seventh graders. “We wanted to incorporate some of the history with this virtual technology,” said Murrah. “I hope they can relate what they see not only to the novels we’re studying but to their present-day life.” Bunker agreed, “We’re trying to combine the novel they’re reading with the history they’ll be getting in Texas history in a way that builds a bridge between the classes.” The integrated approach is catching on

Their final resting place is on the grounds of the library, next to their daughter Robin, who died of leukemia at age three in 1953. “It has been Photo by Butch Ireland very busy this year,” says Warren Finch, library director. “Visits went up after Mrs. Bush’s death, then rose again in December after President Bush passed. March of this year has been one of the busiest periods we’ve had.” But life goes on, as will the continued growth of the library and museum. “We’re always updating the museum with current technology and information,” says Finch, “and we have an active museum program where we rotate traveling exhibits, like the one on display from July 1-January 5, 2020, ‘Wit and Humor: American Political Cartoons.’” This presidential library was the first one where a visitor could walk into an Oval Office replica and sit behind the desk. Among other additions, plans call for a future full-scale replica of the Oval Office “down the road,” says Finch. “We have a lot of things on the radar.”
For a library and museum with plans to keep expanding, they can expect plenty of help that has been in place for some time, adds David Jones, president and CEO of The George and Barbara Bush Foundation. “President Bush hand-picked about 90 people 25 years ago to serve on his Board of Trustees. That group helped raise the money to build the library. Two years ago we re-engaged the group and added a significant number of folks from the Texas A&M community, inviting them to join the Board of Trustees.” Cordillera Ranch resident Billy Lemmons, trustee of both the Texas A&M Foundation and The George and Barbara Bush Foundation, was one of those. Jones says the efforts of the foundations “will help us attract visitors so we can tell President and Mrs. Bush’s story.” It’s a story that President Bush himself was astonished to see on his first walk-through at the library, right before it was dedicated in 1997. Jim McGrath, foundation consultant and post-White House spokesman for President George H.W. Bush says he will never forget it. “President Bush was quiet, very quiet,” recalls McGrath. “I said, ‘what do you think, sir?’ He said, ‘It’s very nice, but it’s all about me. There’s too much me.’” That exchange, says McGrath, showed that “the humility that his mother had inculcated into him from a young age was still there. It was vintage George Bush for him to think that his presidential library was too much about himself.”

Bush that was on display at the Presidential Center in 2017 and is now available in book form. Through October 16, 2019 at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum is a special exhibit “Presidential Retreats: Away from the White House” that features four retreats: Camp David (MD), Prairie Chapel Ranch (TX), LBJ Ranch (TX), and Walker’s Point (ME), and how U.S. presidents have used these special places for work and rest.

An example would be placing the base flush with the wallboard using a simple reveal,” explains Garcia. “The traditional design style, while on the wane today, is still achieved appropriately by installing the same elements used previously but with an updated look,” Garcia says. “Being current with this style is important and can be executed, for example, with smooth beams that are bleached or natural floors and ceilings with lighter hues and thin profiles.” A Pasadera Builders hallmark is their unmatched detailed finishes, which homeowners select to match their preferred styles, and Garcia believes that one of the most important details is the lighting. “Pasadera focuses on the type, the placement, the color and the method of each luminary because a great deal of effort is put into making the finish selections, and it would be a shame to not put that same emphasis on lighting the selections,” he says.
